Among Us Becomes the #8 Most Played Game Ever on Steam with 300k Players

The Multiplayer Party Game Passed Destiny 2 and Grand Theft Auto V Over the Weekend

Originally released back in 2018, Among Us wasn’t very successful with an average of only 30-50 concurrent players across all platforms.

But with popular games getting delayed and gamers still stuck at home due to COVID-19, everyone has been looking for fun new multiplayer game to play with friends.

Over the weekend, Among Us passed Destiny 2 and Grand Theft Auto V with a peak of 300k concurrent players to become the #8 most played game ever on Steam.

Among Us‘ success has been mainly due to its low barrier of entry for players on all devices. The game is free on Apple’s App Store and Google Play, while only $4.99 on Steam. And with crossplay, this allows users on Android, iOS, and PC to all play together online.

Allowing up to 8 friends to play together has also also been one of biggest reasons for the game’s success. Large groups of Twitch and YouTube’s most popular streamers have been teaming up for super streams that have kept the game at the top of Twitch over the past couple weeks.

With a peak of 443k viewers, Among Us also topped popular games like Destiny 2, Overwatch, and Grand Theft Auto V at #16 on the list of most watched games ever on Twitch.

To put in comparison with a more recent easy-to-play party game, the summer’s biggest surprise hit, Fall Guys, had more success on Twitch with a peak of 700k viewers; however, the game’s higher $19.99 price tag on Steam (while being free on PlayStation Plus) only brought in a peak of 170k players, half the size of Among Us‘ peak on Saturday.
