In a talk about dialogue work on the game's creatures and monsters, principal dialogue engineer Will Tidman and senior dialogue engineer Dan Stirling have shared a deep-dive into how they went about breathing life into the Skaven's Warlock Master and Beastmen leader Taurox. Tidman explains that a key challenge in creating new characters is fitting them into a style that's so well established, while still making them individual. For Warlock Master, drawing on the Skaven's existing "skittish", "twitchy", and "aggressive" speech traits with word repetitions offered a good place to start. Tidman says that the dialogue team first took a good look at the character's concept art. Because the Warlock Master didn't already have a big backstory or characteristics to draw from, the devs instead took inspiration from the DLC's mechanical, engineering-focussed approach to battle - especially the ways these themes factored into the lord's designs. For example, his face mask and tubes gave the devs the idea of using respirator-type sounds over his breaths to enhance this facet. Read the rest of the story... Previously expected late this year, the trilogy-concluding strategy game based on Games Workshop's fantasy plastic world is now due in 2022. The developers, Creative Assembly say they want to make sure it's good, yeah? Read more Total War: Warhammer 2 developers are testing a fix for cavalry chargesSep 8, 2021 - PCGamesNAs Total War: Warhammer II gets ready to head off to pasture, one question remains: what's up with the strategy game's cavalry? As Joe has reported, the player community has voiced some concerns over the viability of cavalry units vs counter-charging infantry, and it seems Creative Assembly has heard their cries. A new beta branch is available now on Steam that includes some proposed fixes to the formulae that govern these cavalry engagements. When cavalry charge an infantry formation, Creative Assembly explains, the cavalry unit should be favoured to win, even when the infantry unit reacts and counter-charges. That's not what's been happening in Total Warhammer II, however: because there are typically more individual units in an infantry formation, charging cavalry are taking more hits than were intended, while dealing comparatively few of their own. Creative Assembly has been working on a fix for this, and it's now available in a beta branch on Steam. Two major changes have been made in this build: firstly, a charge attack will not take place if the unit's charge path is blocked by a friendly unit. This impacts infantry in particular, because units in back ranks will no longer be able to use charge attacks immediately when the formation's front ranks are engaged - they'll have friendly units ahead of them, and thus be blocked. A new mod for Total War: Warhammer II takes out a lot of the micromanagement involved in fielding air units in the strategy game - all you've got to do is point them to an area, and they'll take care of bombing it to smithereens. Aerial Pursuit by paperpancake adds a new toggle button to Total War: Warhammer II's battle screen. Clicking it will activate the mod, and the flying unit you have selected will travel to an area you select and hover above the enemy closest to the point you've clicked for the move order. After that, your unit will continue to follow that enemy unit around until it's told otherwise or either unit dies. Once your flying unit is in place, you can manually order it to use abilities or bombard the target. However, you can edit the mod's configuration so that your units will bombard automatically, too. If you're worried the iconic Chaos warlord hasn't been getting much love recently, Total War modder Okoii has come to brighten your day. Archaon is one of the principal leaders of the Chaos Warriors faction, and is considered a rather grim fellow. You would be, with that much anger and self-entitlement. Now, thanks to this truly cursed Warhammer 2 mod, you can experience a happier Archaon by turning his frown upside down! Not literally, but Okoii has essentially flipped Archaon's helmet model a full 180, keeping the eyes in place but causing the glowing recess in his forehead to look like a mouth. While using this mod, Archaon walks about the world in a perpetual state of mild bemusement. The Chaos Warriors are prominent in Warhammer 1 and the mortal empires campaign available in Warhammer 2. The mod lead has been in touch to inform us that this is not the case. The copy has been amended. The Warhammer community is currently dealing with Games Workshop's recent changes to its intellectual property guidelines, the main thrust of which is a "zero tolerance" policy towards fan animations and unlicensed games or apps, as well as the usual suspects of 3D printing and counterfeit or imitation models. So far, the 40k fan animation community on YouTube has felt the biggest impact, but players of Creative Assembly's Total Warhammer games have been wondering how these changes could affect the user-generated content that's always been so important to Total War. Things especially came to a head when noted modder Radious, posting in various channels such as the official Total War discord as well as their own mod pages, stated they had been asked to remove Patreon links from all mods associated with Total War: Warhammer and Total War: Warhammer II. This caused a bit of a stir. Responding on Discord, a Creative Assembly spokesperson reiterated the company's existing stance: "Hi folks, I know that there are a lot of questions relating to modding for Total War: Warhammer. I wanted to assure you that the stance has not changed in any fundamental way from what was outlined back in 2016." Read the rest of the story... If you're excited by the hype for the new game and have decided to try out the second entry, you might want to take a moment to bring yourself up to speed on things, such as the complex web of damage resistances. Active Total War Youtuber LegendofTotalWar has recently put together a tutorial-style video on exactly this topic, breaking down every unit stat in the game to try and give you a clearer picture as to how to interpret the information from the game. Of specific interest is an infographic he slowly builds throughout the video, the final form of which you can see on the Total War subreddit, although we recommend watching the video as well to get the needed context. There's a number of basic binary stats when it comes to damage. For example, damage is either physical, or it's magical in nature. Within those two categories, you also have a separation between missile and melee damage. Read the rest of the story... Now all eyes are on the horizon for the looming arrival of Warhammer 3. While development is moving on from the second game, some fans believe there are some critical issues that need addressing. Even after the massive free 'Hammers and Herdstones' patch that accompanied the latest add-on, it seems one issue is still plaguing tactical battles, namely that cavalry are apparently in a bad place right now, and have been since the start of the year. A recent video from Total War Youtuber milkandcookiesTW highlights the issue, but essentially infantry units - even those that don't have a specific anti-cavalry role - can do a lot of damage to cavalry just by counter-charging. More damage than you'd think is reasonable given the roles these two unit types are supposed to play. It's gotten to the point where this bug is apparently warping the meta and making all kinds of cavalry essentially redundant in both campaign and competitive play. The origin of the problem reportedly stems from an older bug that was affecting Great Stag Knights, but the fix seems to have made the situation worse. Read the rest of the story... Alongside that comes a big free update for the fantasy strategy game, and developer Creative Assembly has helpfully published the patch notes so we can have a look at what will be changing. You won't need to own the new DLC for this patch to have a significant impact, although some of the biggest changes are coming to the beastmen faction. That means you will need to own the original Total War: Warhammer and its Call of the Beastmen expansion for any of the beastmen rework changes to apply to your game, unless you pick up the new expansion. If you do, you're in for some fun. The beastmen "have undergone some ferocious faction furtling," Creative Assembly says, in order to dig into their Warhammer lore and make their campaigns more entertaining. Beastmen commanders will now earn dread for completing missions, burning down towns, and winning battles, and dread can then be used in the Rewards of Dread panel that, among other goodies, offers various legendary lords. We've had dino stacks, rat stacks, sphinx stacks, dragon stacks, and even walking pirate ship stacks. But the time has come to bid a fond farewell, and what better send-off than revisiting the first ever Total War: Warhammer DLC race, the Beastmen. All aboard the minobus, destination doom. The Silence and the Fury sees metal minotaur, Taurox, race to find the Heart of the Dark, a monumental Beastmen herdstone capable of plunging the world into an age of slaughter. But hot on his trail is Oxyotl, the chameleon skink hunter, hoping to put a dart in the brass bull before he unleashes said ritual. It's a good setup, but as with recent lord packs it's mainly there to establish the final battle between Taurox and Oxyotl. At the centre of this new lord pack lies the long-awaited Beastmen rework, and while it's tricky to wrap your head around, rest assured it solves a good deal of Total War: Warhammer's horde gameplay issues. Essentially, Taurox raises a herdstone - similar to a Norscan or Wood Elf outpost - in a destroyed settlement, which establishes a bloodgrounds in adjacent regions. Razing settlements and fighting battles in this area racks up Marks of Destruction (the Beastmen victory resource) that in turn grants more armies and herdstones. Read the rest of the story... Now, after the success of the first installment, the team at CA are already back with a sequel. And with such a quick turnaround time, Total War: Warhammer II has surprisingly been even more well-received with better reviews overall than the original. The problem, however, is that far less have actually played the sequel. Over its launch weekend, Total War: Warhammer II once again brought the franchise back to the #4 spot on Steam, but peaked at 72k concurrent players – a drop of 36% when compared to the original. [caption id="attachment_294599" align="aligncenter" width="786"] Total War: Warhammer II's Peak Players per Hour on Steam via GitHyp[/caption] [caption id="attachment_294595" align="aligncenter" width="786"] Total War: Warhammer's Peak Players per Hour on Steam via GitHyp[/caption] Based on the reviews alone, Total War: Warhammer II has been considered the developers’ best work yet. But putting scores aside and focusing on player counts, it seems like Creative Assembly and Sega might have chosen to release the sequel a bit too soon. Releasing the follow up a little over a year after the last title is clearly an effort by the devs and publisher to strike while the iron is hot and before the original's player base drops to under 10k players an hour on the weekends. A move that would seem like the right sales call with the sequel’s strong #4 debut being a clear sign that fans still want more Total War. Yet, the drop-off in players is also a sign that many have already had their Total War fix and the successful launches of similar turn-based games recently such as Divinity: Original Sin II have also taken a large chunk of previous players.
