Play Kingdom Come Deliverance for free this weekend, or keep it for $3Aug 30, 2024 - PCGamesNThere's nothing quite like a good ol' fashioned medieval brawl. Sure, the seedy speakeasies of futuristic dystopias like Night City have their charm, but I'd trade a laser gun for a greatsword to pommel strike my enemies with any day. It's a fantasy that I think a lot of people adore, and if you fancy spending your weekend as a knight in bloody armor, I have some good news for you. Ahead of the highly-anticipated sequel, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is having a free weekend on Steam, and if you enjoy it, you can pick it up for less than the price of a coffee (although I don't think they had that back then). Take Skyrim, where you can shoot a bandit in the head with an unarmored arrow and have them remain completely unfazed. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is on the opposite end of the scale with some of the most immersive systems in any game - and it's 80% off on Steam right now, at its lowest price ever. It lures you in with a first-person RPG framework that is instantly identifiable as 'The Bethesda Style', then quickly strips away all the comforts that we took for granted in those games, leaving us naked, starting afresh. Quests often require in-depth detective work, combat encounters are terrifying, and the nights are so dark that without a torch you risk breaking your leg (and you can forget about quick loading to before the incident - unless you patch the game, that is). Even fast-travel is fraught with danger, as you are forced to watch your little pawn slide across the hand-drawn map, vulnerable to random encounters. And, of course, there is no magic. This is Central Europe in the year of our Lord 1400ish; a place so religious that 'God Be With You' is the colloquial term for 'Hello'. Start spouting off about spells and wizardry around these parts and you'll be burned at the stake. It's a fascinating game to say the least - as maddening as it is, dare I say it, magical. For the last year or so, it's not been a great time to be a part of Embracer Group. There have been almost 1400 staff laid off across various studios, and several closures too. Saber founder Matthew Karch doesn't think Embracer is evil, just a company "that everyone likes to pick on," despite the fact it spent ridiculous amounts of money on studios it couldn't ultimately afford leading to needless layoffs. But now, Embracer Group doesn't exist anymore, at least not as one company. The group announced earlier today that it is splitting into three companies: Asmodee Group, Coffee Stain & Friends, and Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends. The "& Friends" part of Middle-earth Enterprises includes a number of familiar names, like Tomb Raider and Marvel's Avengers dev Crystal Dynamics, Dead Island 2 dev Dambuster Studios, Deus Ex dev Eidos-Montreal, and several more. Obviously IP like The Lord of the Rings, as well as Tomb Raider and others, now fall under Middle-earth Enterprises too, as well as media company Plaion, comics publisher Dark Horse, and Freemode. Simply titled Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, the new title promises to be another realism-focused action RPG - set against the backdrop of a chaotic civil war raging across 15th Century Bohemia - the historic region of the world that encompasses much of the modern-day Czech Republic. Players are once again cast as Henry of Skalitz - the returning protagonist from the first title. Henry’s story continues - and the developers promise hours more cutscenes than in the previous game, a more epic story, and a significantly larger open world for Henry to explore. In an introduction given to media, the game's developers boasted the word was double the size. See the debut trailer for yourself below. Going by the announcement video, the new game is the same game but with more cash to burn. It's the work of 250 people, with Jan Valta returning as composer. According to Vávra, "what we are making now is what it was supposed to be in the beginning, but we were not able to do it because we didn't have enough resources and experience." With 96k concurrent players at its peak, no other new release in 2018 has been able to topple the Kingdom -- which still holds the #1 spot over the year’s other biggest new releases, Far Cry 5 (92k peak players) and Warhammer: Vermintide 2 (73k peak players).
Yet, in the past two and a half months since its release, KCD has lost 95% of its players. With a player base that has dwindled down to an average of only 3.6k concurrent players from an average of 66.4k concurrent players, this year’s hottest new RPG is now on the verge of dropping out on Steam's top 100 most played games.
[caption id="attachment_349467" align="aligncenter" width="770"] Kingdom Come: Deliverance's Peak Concurrent Players on Steam via GitHyp[/caption]
Many might cite KCD’s singleplayer format as reason for its decline, but since its downfall, similar games such as The Witcher 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have continued to prove that old singleplayer RPGs can keep players' interest and stay at the top of Steam.
Over this past weekend, both were in Steam’s top 25 with 2015’s The Witcher 3 pulling in 18k concurrent players while the regular version and special edition of 2011’s Skyrim combined for peaks as high as 33k players per hour.
After such a successful first week with Mostly Positive reviews from players, it seemed as if Kingdom Come could maintain its player base as long as the developers could deliver updates in a timely manner. That however, hasn’t been the case. Bugs and other gameplay-related issues have led to KCD recently dropping to Mixed reviews and players looking elsewhere for their open-world RPG fix on Steam.Kingdom Come: Deliverance’s First Week on Steam Tops The Witcher 3’s LaunchFeb 21, 2018 - GitHypKingdom Come: Deliverance, from new developer Warhorse Studios, just had one hell of a launch week. The Medieval RPG reached #4 on Steam’s list of most played games over the weekend with an impressive peak of 96k concurrent players on Sunday.
To put its wildly successful launch into perspective, one of the most popular RPGs ever released on Steam, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, peaked at #4 with 92k concurrent players back in May 2015.
[caption id="attachment_331082" align="aligncenter" width="786"] Kingdom Come: Deliverance Peak Concurrent Players on Steam via GitHyp[/caption]
Kingdom Come's total sales likely won't top The Witcher 3 with CD Projekt Red's third game in the trilogy surely having far more players on their own GOG Galaxy platform. Still, for a new IP that started on Kickstarter four years ago from a studio with no prior releases, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a huge victory for its team.
Players have been waiting years for a new open world adventure to invest hundreds of hours into and Kingdom Come could have the staying power of Bethesda and CDPR’s beloved RPGs. Based on the mostly positive reviews that cite the game’s spectacular open world and rich gameplay mechanics, Kingdom Come has a realistic chance to stay at top of Steam if the devs can continue improving the game.
