After Update One rolled out on 15th May, fans expressed unhappiness that Denuvo's Anti-Cheat software (not the same as Anti-Tamper) was being implemented on the PC version as part of the patch. In particular, concerns were raised that Denuvo's software was too intrusive, as it uses a kernel-level driver - while some players attributed performance issues to the addition of the anti-cheat software. And, of course, this was all being added after many players had already purchased the game, with no ability to opt-out. To address the controversy, Doom Eternal executive producer Marty Stratton posted a statement to Reddit explaining the anti-cheat software would be removed as part of the next patch - but defended the team's reasons for implementing it. "Despite our best intentions, feedback from players has made it clear that we must re-evaluate our approach to anti-cheat integration," Stratton wrote. "With that, we will be removing the anti-cheat technology from the game in our next PC update." Empowered Demons are particularly deadly opponents with a unique trick; they're designed to hop from one player's solo campaign to another each time the demon successfully eliminates the campaign's host. It's a process that will continue, with the creature growing more and more powerful, until a player manages to bring its reign to an end. Players that successfully defeat an Empowered Demon will be rewarded with additional ammo, health, and bonus XP. However, those that don't wish to take advantage of Doom Eternal's new feature can toggle it on and off as they choose. Issues around the soundtrack first came to light at the end of April, when audio blogger and Ruff Audio founder Reace "thatACDCguy" Niles noted dramatically variable differences in quality across the recording, which he attributed to reduced dynamic range on certain tracks. Niles pointed the finger of blame at Gordon, writing "I expect much better from him", to which the composer responded, explaining he'd only mixed a "small handful of tracks" and "wouldn't have done that" on the other tracks. With three times more players, Bethesda’s latest take on the Doom series slayed their successful soft reboot from a few years ago -- which peaked at 32k players when it launched back in May 2016. The previous Doom game’s rave reviews combined with so many recent triple-A games being delayed this year all helped Bethesda's demonic sequel drop into Steam’s current Top 10 most played games over the weekend. But the biggest factor that can be attributed to Doom’s recent success has been the real life “Hell on Earth” pandemic caused by the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which has resulted in quarantines forcing gamers all across the world to stay at home. The terrible situation caused by the virus has been hurting far more than just the gaming industry over the past month; however, the timing of Doom Eternal's digital launch couldn’t have been better for Bethesda, who have been struggling the past couple years with their new game releases. Despite being one of the most visually impressive virtual reality games on the market, 2018’s Doom VFR peaked with only 277 players and made a strong case that VR is in trouble. Bethesda’s decision to release the digital version of Rage 2 exclusively on their own launcher resulted in the game peaking with only 13.6k players when it finally came to Steam in May 2019. And Wolfenstein: Youngblood did even worse with a peak of 6.5k players later that year. At the time of Doom Eternal’s reveal, it was uncertain if the game was going to come to Steam... or if Bethesda would keep it exclusive to their own launcher. Based on the current player counts,  it's clear that launching on Steam was the right business decision; and the success of the sequel should hopefully keep more of Bethesda’s upcoming games on Steam in the future.New Small Game Patch - 3/22Mar 22, 2020 - Community AnnouncementsHey all, We're currently pushing live a minor patch that includes crash fix that should be live within the next few moments: Slight Game Spoiler Below: Fixed a crash to desktop when playing DOOM and DOOM II in the Fortress of DOOM.
