Yooka-Laylee developers Playtonic announce layoffs: “the landscape is shifting, and with it, so must we"May 30, 2025 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunYooka-Laylee developers Playtonic are laying off staff across their operations, as they wrestle with what they call “a period of profound change in how games are created and financed”. It’s not clear what these "profound changes" are, exactly – soaring budgets? Evergreen service games drinking up all the oxygen? Falling interest in the genre of mascot platformer Playtonic are best known for? Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, which launched toward the end of last year, sees the titular lizard and bat duo mixing things up for outing number two. While the first, rather uneven, game in the series saw Playtonic riffing on developer Rare's beloved Banjo-Kazooie games, its sequel swaps fully 3D platforming for predominantly side-scrolling action. The most obvious touchstone this time around is Donkey Kong Country - specifically, Retro Studios' two critically acclaimed outings - and the end result is a follow-up that feels tighter, more enjoyable, and supremely more assured. Titled as The Impossible Layer, this Mario level pays homage to the Impossible Lair's level-changing mechanic. Playtonic's Yooka-Laylee follow-up launched yesterday on Nintendo Switch - and also PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Read more Yooka-Laylee And The Impossible Lair jumps out todayOct 8, 2019 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun Playtonic’s platforming power pals Yooka and Laylee today return with a new retro-styled adventure, Yooka-Laylee And The Impossible Lair. This is thrown back a few years earlier than their 3D debut adventure (see our Yooka-Laylee review for more on that), this time jumping around in side-on sections with top-down overworld hub bits too. The important thing is, the lizard and bat are friends and they like jumping. (more…) Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair review - a brilliant and better follow-upOct 8, 2019 - EurogamerThe original Yooka-Laylee quite rightly had its eyes set on the past. Pitched as a tribute to retro 3D platformers, Playtonic's debut was made by veterans who helped define the genre for diehard fans who helped fund the game's massive Kickstarter campaign. The result was suitably bright and nostalgic, if a little scrappy, with solid enough foundations Playtonic has built on brilliantly for this follow-up. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair finds the buddy duo in a modern 2D platformer that feels, in comparison, like it was made specifically for today. Three impressive things each add something fresh to the formula. The first is the Impossible Lair itself, a lengthy and tough-as-nails level available right from the start which also serves as the game's finale. But while you can jump into it from the off, it's likely you won't get very far. It begins with a boss fight against the nefarious Capital B, and it all goes south from there. But it also features a unique mechanic - a shield which grows throughout the game as you save another bee at the end of each level. The more levels you complete, the more hits you can take in the Impossible Lair. Playtonic has described the Lair as being inspired by Breath of the Wild's Hyrule Castle - which you can similarly step into as soon as you leave that game's opening Plateau area, Calamity Ganon in your sights. The Impossible Lair works as a tighter, smaller scale homage, one which keeps track of the number of your attempts and the percentage of the level you've been able to clear in a specific run. It also keeps the game focused: here is the thing you must do to complete the game - the sting in its tail - and here is how strong you need to become in order to bee-t it. Following the Banjo-Kazooie-inspired 3D platforming of 2017’s Yooka-Laylee, they’re looking just a smidgen earlier (or perhaps adjacent?) with Yooka-Laylee And The Impossible Lair, a side-scrolling “2.5D” platformer with a top-down 3D overlord. History be damned, this is the present and the important part is: the lizard and bat are still superfriends. You can see that in the new trailer below. (more…)
