To ensure players across Steam, Bethesda.net Launcher, and Xbox Game Pass for PC can team up together, we'll be deploying a small compatibility update this morning, February 6, at 10 AM EST | 3 PM UTC.Wolfenstein Youngblood gets ray tracing and VRS - is this an early preview of next-gen console features?Jan 15, 2020 - EurogamerHardware accelerated ray tracing, variable rate shading, advanced image reconstruction techniques driven by machine learning: these are all cutting edge rendering technologies likely to be a seriously big deal once the next generation console era is upon us. However, PC owners today have the ability to preview all of these technologies running in tandem in one of the most impressive and performant game engines around. Yes, Wolfenstein Youngblood has been patched to support the gamut of Nvidia RTX features and the results are highly impressive. So what do users of RTX cards get with this new update to the latest and possibly last id Tech 6 title? Taking centre stage is ray tracing support, where the developers target one of the most challenging and expensive RT techniques: reflections. Much like Control or Battlefield 5, ray tracing replaces the game's use of cube maps and screen-space reflections on nearly every surface. In addition to increased realism, you also get the ability to 'see' reflections of the in-game world that don't exist in screen-space - like the player characters themselves, for example. However, the implementation is much wider ranging than you might imagine. The embedded video on this page illustrates a couple of key aspects. First of all, you get to see how standard cube maps and screen-space reflections actually work - and then you get to see the more accurate ray traced alternative. It's quite fascinating how as players we've become accustomed to what are fundamentally compromised results. Game makers have got really good at 'faking' these effects and I also suspect that as virtually every major engine uses similar techniques, we've grown accustomed to their lack of realism. So when you sit down and study how those reflections should actually look, the results are eye-opening.Youngblood's effect is realistic right down to the most incidental details in the tiniest reflections. It’s set in 1980, and developers Machinegames don t go halfway on it. The game is soaked with 1980s references, from early electronica and synthpop in the French Underground to 3D glasses and UVK Tapes (VHS tapes but, um, more Nazi-like). The in-game explanation is that Nazi dominance is so complete that it pervades popular culture. The music of our 1980s is rooted in our postwar reality, tied to its precedents of the 1970s – particularly punk music and punk culture – and a further evolution of postwar youth culture. But how could musical ideas like New Wave possibly have flourished in an alternate postwar world dominated by Nazi occupation? Well they couldn t have. All this stuff isn t in the game just because it looks and sounds cool. It creates an important storytelling dynamic that empowers the player to fight evil for a culture worth keeping. However, whereas its other freebie stablemate Control teleported its ray tracing support in at launch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood positively dragged its cybernetic heels over it, with months and months passing after its initial July release date without any word on when it might finally pitch up. Finally, the reflection gods at Nvidia have spoken, and it’s going to be patched in as part of their latest CES GeForce driver update available this week. Hoo-rah. (more…) Explore a Parisian reservoir and Nazi bunker in Wolfenstein: Youngblood's new free updateNov 12, 2019 - EurogamerBethesda is giving players more ways to put Nazis in their place today, with the advent of Wolfenstein: Youngblood's free 1.07 content update, which adds two new locations to the game, new abilities, new end-game activities, and more. Youngblood's new areas - a Parisian reservoir and secret Nazi bunker to be precise - can be accessed once players have completed the Da'at Yichud Artifacts end-game side quest. With this out the way, the new Treasure Hunt side mission will unlock, sending players off in search of a Da'at Yichud chest, reported to be hidden away in a secret Nazi hideout. As noted in Bethesda's 1.07 release notes, the new Parisian reservoir and Nazi bunker are home to three new enemy types: the Wurmlochsoldat (Teleporting bersoldier), the Electrodrohne (Tesla Drone), and the Turmhund (Laserhund with a turret). This update adds adds adjusted boss difficulties, weapon damage improvements, health bar toggles and other requested changes and features from you, our player community! Thank you so much for your patience and support of Wolfenstein: Youngblood! We will continue to monitor the game and improve it with future updates as needed. We appreciate your feedback! PATCH HIGHLIGHTS Adjusted difficulty of all boss fights. Enemies can now have their health bars toggled on or off in the Options menu. (This does not turn off armor types.) Took a variety of actions to reduce the feeling of enemy “bullet sponginess”. An amount of ammo for basic weapons is now replenished after a player respawns. Added more special weapon ammo throughout more difficult areas. Added duplicate tutorial laptops to the game to make 100% completion more attainable. Fixed an issue that could cause some enemies in certain areas to spawn prematurely. Increased the speed of switching between certain weapons to make it easier to adapt to enemy armor types. BALANCE CHANGES Tutorials not collected by players in Paris Streets sections 1 or 2 will now be present in Paris Streets section 3. This will allow players to backtrack from later sections of the game in order to get tutorials that count towards game completion percentage. Added checkpoints to all active Tower mission and Tower Guardian fights. Note that returning to the towers after completing the main missions will not have checkpoints. Players who expend all lives and reset to the latest checkpoint will now find their base weapons refilled to at least 50% of ammo capacity. This will function with all ammo modifier skills and upgrades but does not affect special or heavy weapons. Additional special weapon ammo has been added to all boss and guardian fights. We have doubled the amount of damage done to armored enemies by the non-preferred weapon type. This will result in enemies feeling much less absorptive of damage when the player has the wrong weapon equipped. We still highly encourage players to spend their silver to upgrade a variety of weapon types so as to maximize damage to tough enemies! General Winkler has had his health lowered to be more in line with the difficulty of the Zeppelin level. The Bombdog damage has been slightly lowered. The base Shotgun, Autopistol, and SMG damage output has been increased to bring them in line with other basic weapons. Tower Gate Guardians have had their level lowered in all Districts to better reflect the level of enemies inside the Towers. The Towers are still intended to be played by players level 20 or higher. Added the ability to toggle “iron sights” on/off. This option can be found in the Controls menu. Lowered controller rumble on Xbox One. Added the option to turn off enemy health bars to the Gameplay options. Dishonored's Dunwall excelled at polarity, its pomp and majesty juxtaposed with decay and death. Neu-Paris, too, echoes Arkane's masterfully macabre world-building. But where Dunwall's untold stories swam in the eyes of its dead and dying, Wolfenstein: Youngblood's Neu-Paris has no time for such sentiment. It is a city ravaged by war, yes, but there are no survivors padding these cobbled streets. There are only the self-indulgent trappings of the Reich, the endless pageantry of polished mahogany and billowing banners and scarlet soft furnishings... all swastika-branded, naturally. Whether I was two, 12, or 20 hours in, it never failed to surprise me - shock me, even - to explore this alternate timeline and happen across another interrogation room, its tools and weapons and torture devices stamped with Nazi branding. While it might not quite rival that of Dishonored, take the time to look, and the detail in Youngblood's playsets is really quite extraordinary, especially if you cast your gaze upwards.
