The Essential line-up for April was revealed two weeks ago, detailing that Sackboy: A Big Adenture, Tails of Iron, and Meet Your Maker would be coming to the first tier of the service. As for those with Extra and Premium, you can expect a lot more bang for your buck. It also just so happens that Xbox Game Pass subscribers might be familiar with a few of these titles, as most of them are Microsoft-licensed. While other genres warp beyond recognition, there is something solid about the first-person shooter that makes it as dependable as a nice big AK-47. Maybe it s the gung-ho simplicity – look down a barrel and pull the trigger. It’s as fun to fire a double-barrelled shotgun from an early 90s FPS as the slick shotties of today. For that reason, this list runs the gamut from genre classics to those released in the last year. There’s bound to be something for you in this, our list of the best 50 FPS games on PC. It looks to be a gift that literally keeps giving, too; the Deluxe edition comes with a ‘Buddy Pass’, so you can invite a special someone to join you on your power-armoured rampage. Set some years after Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, it casts one or two players as BJ Blazkowicz and Anya’s twin daughters, now old enough to hunt Nazis for themselves with the aid of matching super-suits. Check out the debut trailer below, featuring Carpenter Brut’s appropriately titled Turbo Killer. One, channelling Donald Trump, is running for the Montana legislature and asks you to suppress disproportionately black voters opposed to his far-right agenda by murdering them. His ex-wife kills flag burning socialists from a helicopter with the efficiency of a South American military junta. They are somehow the best anti-fascist heroes Ubisoft could come up with for Far Cry 5. (more…) An ode to video game doorsDec 11, 2018 - EurogamerIt's easy to underestimate the humble door. You open it, you go through. Sometimes, you must find the key first, and for many games, that's the whole extent of the player's interactions with doors. They're something to get past, something that cordons off one bit from the next bit. A simple structural element, of special interest to level designers, but not the ones who turn the knobs. And yet, the fundamental nature of doors that makes them seem so mundane also imbues them with a kind of magic. How do I open it? And what could be behind it? A good door is a locus of challenge and mystery; mystery that could give way to delight, wonder, or even a good scare. A good door is a teasing paradox that does everything in its power to entice and invite, but also puts up a decent effort to keep you out, at least long enough to intrigue and fire up your imagination. Some games highlight the versatility of doors by turning them into especially dense knots in the possibility space. In games like Thief, Dishonored, Prey, Deus Ex or Darkwood, doors can be lockpicked, hacked, blown to bits or cleverly circumvented. In emergencies, they can be barricaded, blocked by heavy objects or even taken off the electric grid. For the tactically minded, they can serve as choke points to lure enemies into traps or ambushes, while the patient can use keyholes to spy on the unsuspecting, or simply get close enough to a door to eavesdrop on an important conversation. We’ve been working with NVIDIA to make sure the game runs great on NVIDIA RTX hardware. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus debuts the first implementation of NAS. Additional patch notes: Added support for NVIDIA Adaptive Shading on NVIDIA RTX series GPUs. (Improves frame rate by dynamically adjusting the shading resolution in different areas of the screen, without affecting fidelity). Ensured that, on multiple GPU systems, the discrete GPU is preferred over an integrated GPU. Players can now choose to ignore/suppress warnings when the selected video settings exceed the amount of dedicated VRAM available on the GPU Fixes for skinning issues on GTX 970 For more information, check out the below info from NVIDIA: GeForce RTX graphics cards support several new, innovative advanced shading techniques, that enable developers to further improve performance, and do things that were previously impossible. One of these techniques is NVIDIA Adaptive Shading (NAS), formerly known as Content Adaptive Shading (CAS). This adjusts the rate at which portions of the screen are shaded, meaning the GPU has less work to do, boosting performance. Factors like spatial and temporal color coherence are measured each frame, and in areas where detail remains unchanged from frame to frame, such as sky boxes and walls, the shading rate can be lowered in successive frames. What really happened to B.J. Blazkowicz?Sep 14, 2018 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun This article contains major spoilers for Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus (and Jacob s Ladder). Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus was one of the critical darlings of last year. A first person shooter that moves at a blistering pace, in Wolfenstein 2 you step once more into the big stompy shoes of William Blazkowicz and mow down armies of Nazis. But Wolfenstein 2 s easiest-to-miss scene has a chilling implication, which calls into question the reality of the game s entire second half. The beta version of this patch was pushed live last week. "What if I still receive the error?" In our most recent patch, we introduced a new warning message to help you know if you have set your graphics settings too high for your card to handle stably. While our hotfix addresses an issue where users were unable to clear the error “The video driver has run out of dedicated video memory”, although that warning message will still appear when attempting to run the game at settings that require more VRAM than your GPU has available. To see how much VRAM your GPU has, and how much you are trying to use with your current settings, enable “Show Performance Metrics” through the Advanced Video options. If the amount shown in “Heap” (the amount of VRAM the game is using at these settings) is higher than the amount shown in “VRAM” (the amount of memory your GPU has), then “Heap” will show in yellow or red text and you’ll receive the warning message that “The video driver has run out of dedicated video memory” when you load a level. This may not cause a crash immediately, but will result in degraded performance that can also cause stability issues. We advise against running the game in this state. To avoid seeing the warning message, use one of these methods: To restore default settings that are the most appropriate for the GPU, delete your configuration files located in 'C:\Users\\Saved Games\Wolfenstein II The New Colossus\base'. Alternatively, change the Video Quality Profile to a lower value in the Video options menu, or reduce the 'Resolution' and 'Image Streaming Quality' settings in the Advanced Video options to reduce your VRAM usage. If you are a user of GeForce Experience, you can use it to select the Optimal settings for your Nvidia GPU Video Memory Error - Beta Hotfix (8/24/2018)Aug 24, 2018 - Community AnnouncementsHey all, Since our latest patch, some users have reported the following issue since updating to this week's game update for Wolfenstein II: “The video driver has run out of dedicated video memory. Your gameplay will be negatively affected.” We apologize for the inconvenience that this latest patch has caused. This message is appearing when attempting to run the game at higher settings than the GPU can handle. We have put a potential hotfix candidate that fixes the messaging prompts into the Public Beta branch. This hotfix allows players to get past the message on load screens and continue playing the game. However, in order to get the message to stop appearing, you’ll need to lower the graphical settings to an appropriate level that the GPU can handle. You can view your VRAM by enabling “Show Performance Metrics” through the Advanced Video options. https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/29139006/0fa5a52d852d1d3d8058b5c1d1d76375dc46c1ab.jpg If the heap usage exceeds the amount of VRAM available to the GPU, it won't result in an instant crash but hitching and stuttering in frame rate may be observed, and overtime that may cause crashes during gameplay. How to fix: The minimum requirements for the game is for the GPU to have least a 4GB of VRAM. To restore default settings that are the most appropriate for the GPU, delete your configuration files located in 'C:\Users\\Saved Games\Wolfenstein II The New Colossus\base'. Alternatively, changing the graphical preset to a lower value in the Video menu or reducing the 'Resolution' and 'Image Streaming Quality' settings in the Advanced Video options can help alleviate strain on the VRAM. How to Access Public Beta Branch: To access the Beta Branch, right click on Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus in your Steam Library and select 'Properties'. Navigate to the 'BETAS' tab, and select the Public Beta from the drop down list. Best PC gaming deals of the week August 24th 2018Aug 24, 2018 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun If you’re in the UK, this weekend is one of those three-day affairs thanks to the August Bank Holiday finally arriving. While that probably means you’ll have an extra day to spend nursing a hangover, it’s also a chance to get in more time treating yourself. Case in point: I’m likely to spend a truly unhealthy portion of this weekend immersed in Shenmue HD, because I’m a glutton for both nostalgia and tedium. In the meantime, however, we’ve got another batch of gaming deals to check out, so let’s get to that. As usual, we ve got deals that ll work in the UK, deals that ll work in the US and some deals that will work in both the UK and US, as well as presumably many other places. Let s get started. (more…) New Wolfenstein II Patch: August 22, 2018Aug 22, 2018 - Community AnnouncementsHey all, We've deployed a new update that will resolve various issues. The list of fixes is below: Fixed crash after changing Async compute settings on supported AMD GPUs Added in-game warning for when GPU drivers over-allocate to memory heaps Added GPU memory heap usage statistics in full statistics reporting mode General stability improvements on lower-end GPUs Fixed issue causing "Failed to write coredump" during startup Germany relaxes ban on Nazi symbols in video gamesAug 9, 2018 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun After decades of banning swastikas and such symbols of Nazis and other “unconstitutional organisations” from games, German authorities will now potentially allow them – if they serve an artistic or educational purpose. This “social adequacy” clause has allowed these symbols to be used in other artistic mediums but wasn’t previously applied to video games (which only became art, as we all know, through BioShock Infinite in 2013), requiring developers to replace or otherwise remove the iconography to get a German release. This change isn’t a green light for swastikas galore, as laws controlling the symbols still apply, but the German ratings board are now willing to consider their artistic merit in games. (more…) Bethesda's QuakeCon 2018 Steam sale has begunAug 8, 2018 - PC GamerEven though you won't be able to play Fallout 76 on Steam at launch, almost everything else in Bethesda's back catalogue is discounted on Valve's platform this weekend, just in time for QuakeCon 2018.  While I can't find a dedicated Steam page for the sale just yet, probably because it began very recently and Dead Cells is currently occupying the homepage, you can see the discounts by heading to Bethesda's publisher page on Steam and scrolling down to 'specials'. Some highlights include Prey on-sale for £10/$15, and its roguelite-style DLC Mooncrash for $15/£9.74, which is 25% off. 2016's Doom is just $10/£7.49 (Fanatical has it slightly cheaper), which is reasonable for what's probably the best singleplayer FPS of the modern age.  Fallout 4's GOTY edition is £20/$30, matching its best Steam price to date if you've somehow not played that yet. And of course, no mention of 3D Fallout games can go without also bringing up New Vegas, the vanilla edition of which is $3.29/£2.63. I paid double that for a chocolate-flavoured beer last weekend. The beer was fantastic, but New Vegas will definitely last longer. The excellent Wolfenstein 2, give or take two annoying final bosses, is $24/£16. The Elder Scrolls Online and its various expansions are also discounted, plus you can get the entire Elder Scrolls series for less, too. If, like me, you have most of those, you can instead look forward to QuakeCon itself this weekend, where we'll be getting our first look at Doom Eternal gameplaySome online stores give us a small cut if you buy something through one of our links. Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot and Prey: Typhon Hunter are set in their respective universes and, of the two, Typhon Hunter seems the most interesting. It s a prop hunt-like bit of multiplayer hide and seek, in which five players are mimics pretending to be everyday objects, and one player is Morgan Yu, trying to find and kill them. “Typhon Hunter is a deadly game of cat and mouse,” say Bethesda, “except in this instance the cat is sometimes a trashcan or a bottle of cleaning supplies and the mouse has a shotgun.” (more…) Wolfenstein Cyberpilot is a VR hacking gameJun 10, 2018 - EurogamerThe Wolfenstein series is getting a VR game. Wolfenstein Cyberpilot casts players as hackers who can take over Nazi technology and turn it on its masters. Cyberpilot was announced at Bethesda's E3 Showcase. There's no word on platforms so far, but the game will be playable at the show. It’s set in 1980, see, 19 years after Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. Would you be surprised to hear that the twins are also very keen on shooting Nazis? Meet ’em in the game’s announcement trailer. (more…) Wolfenstein: Youngblood is a co-op game starring B.J. Blazkowicz's twin daughtersJun 10, 2018 - PC GamerAnnounced during Bethesda's E3 showcase, Wolfenstein: Youngblood is a co-op game starring B.J. Blazkowicz's twin daughters, set in Paris in 1980s. Granted, these aren't the '80s you might know. The Nazis are still in charge in Wolfenstein's alternate timeline. Watch the debut trailer above.  Wolfenstein: Youngblood is releasing in 2019.  Wolfenstein 2 and the anatomy of a blockbuster heroJun 9, 2018 - EurogamerPicture for a moment the triple-A hero. He is Kratos grappling a gigantic serpent on mighty waves; he is Call of Duty's Jack Mitchell acquiring a magic robot arm at his best friend's funeral. Sporting abs (or guns) that shine like justice, he is fast, deadly and remorseless. At his logical conclusion, the triple-A hero is Kurtz from Apocalypse Now sat in the dark jungle, whispering tales of annihilation, a catalogue of army medals in his back-pocket. In film, the only recourse left for the Stallones and Lundgrens of 80s fame is parody. These days we tend toward John Wick over The Terminator, although key traits - unquenchable bloodlust, highly efficient - still remain. This is not the case in games, where hyper-masculine juggernauts abound. Wolfenstein series hero BJ Blazkowicz - lumbering toward Nazi henchmen like a haunted steamroller - is the perfect example. He's a one-man army wrought by the gods of steroidal fury. It was, as Edwin more eloquently said in his Wolfenstein 2 review, "vicious, affecting, witty, spaced-out, crude, inventive, morbid and for the most part, a success." But while we all merrily mashed Nazis in 1960s America, developers at MachineGames cringed at a parade of things we didn't see - the "I"s which weren't dotted, the "T"s uncrossed. Andreas jerfors was one such developer, the senior game designer for Wolfenstein 2, and in a talk at Digital Dragons 2018 in Poland last week he outlined what he thought went well, and what he thought didn't. Take stealth, for instance. The idea was for Wolfenstein 2 to cater to three playstyles: mayhem, tactical and stealth. The first two were fine but stealth was weak. "Sometimes it felt inconsistent," jerfors said in his talk. Enemies discovered you too easily and too often, and you'd be left with no choice but to fight. "We didn't spend enough resources and attention on stealth." He thinks it's because not enough people believed in stealth across the company so it didn't have the creative buy-in it needed to really work. Of course it is - where have you been? Haven't you heard of the charity speedrunning marathons Games Done Quick? Speedrunning involves not only knowing every nook and cranny of a game but also how to cut its corners and even break it, if needs be. Take Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus - speedrunners discovered you can skip an entire boss fight with the Citadel/Zitadelle by simply running right past it. But the discovery wasn't the shock to developer MachineGames you might think. "That might look like it's incidental, but the boss actually wanted - he likes for people to be able to speedrun the game," said senior game designer Andreas jerfors during his talk at Digital Dragons 2018. "Me, as the designer of the Citadel, I don't, because I want people to play my content!" Read more…
