Winkeltje: The Little Shop

Pathfinding UpdateFeb 8, 2024 - Community AnnouncementsThis update tries to properly fix the problem where customers and employees are getting randomly stuck. This has been a long-standing issue and has been around in one form or another since 2022. This problem was caused by a combination of simple issues in our code, which were easily fixed, and issues with the pathfinding solution, which proved to be incredibly problematic to solve. Old Pathfinding - Unity Nav Mesh Winkeltje, as many have known it since early access nearly 5 years ago, uses the built-in navigation solution that is provided by the Unity game engine. This solution is also known as Nav Mesh pathfinding. Nav Mesh is short for Navigation Mesh. Unity is able to generate a Nav Mesh during gameplay which then returns a mesh surface area on which the agents, like customers, employees and the cat, can navigate. We use the term agent for any entity that uses the pathfinding system to navigate. Here you see an old example of the Nav Mesh being regenerated when furniture gets moved. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34365312/345e7dd75fd6badb0777855a7f040e1697fef2b4.gif Using the Unity Nav Mesh as our default pathfinding solution had several advantages: It is the go-to solution for pathfinding in Unity. It runs fast enough for Winkeltje. It is easy to set up and implement. It is easy to work with and adjust. As recent years have shown, it also has some downsides: It may cause agents to get stuck in seemingly random places without clear feedback as to why. Here you see an example of an agent getting stuck when using Nav Mesh pathfinding. This occurrence is super rare with a very high negative impact to the player experience. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34365312/5b2fdceb9b1fe59e45c3f2aff15886dd8aafe443.gif In games, when there is a static environment that does not move, it is relatively easy to fix issues when a pathfinding agent gets stuck on the Nav Mesh by manually adjusting the Nav Mesh. It is also common in static environments to cover up the issue by placing a random crate where the agent would get stuck. It is a blessing and a curse that Winkeltje provides players with a lot of freedom in building and decorating their shop. So it is not unthinkable that sometimes, a player creates a shop that sometimes just.. breaks. We have tried a lot of things to try to get to the root of the problem where agents get stuck such as creating a higher resolution Nav Mesh, having the agent calculate a more accurate path, simply checking if an agent got stuck and probably about a dozen other things. Sometimes a week and a half would pass without any reported issues for this problem to pop up again. And on occasion, it would rightfully earn us a negative review. Many of our attempts fixed the symptom of the issue in singular reproduction cases. But then the symptom would appear again in other reproduction cases. None of our attempts fixed the actual root of the issue, and we could not manage to dive into the black-box Nav Mesh pathfinding system that was provided by Unity. A Nav Mes...Major Free Update & Cat Companion DLCOct 19, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsHello dear shopkeepers, We are thrilled to announce that the wait is finally over. To try our best to deliver a smooth deployment, we are going to make the cat DLC free to try out on Steam for a week as of this posting. This will help us find and fix any issues, and give you a chance to enjoy a furry feline in your shop. Once a week has passed, the cat feature will be disabled again. From that point you will have to be patient until the big free update is deployed and the Cat Companion DLC will officially be made available on all platforms. You can wishlist the DLC over on its store page over here. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34365312/f0c284282e4d5b73bb90f38a8490c805c374bd68.png How can you you participate? Trying out the new update is easy! In the previous update we announced that we wanted to use that patch to align all of platforms to the same version. We unfortunately ran into some issues with one of our console builds that stopped us from doing so. This hasn't impacted the PC version, but has created a bit of a weird gap in some of the console versions. All of the builds have now made it through certification on all platforms, so we're ready to go. This patch updates the versions as follows: PC: 7229 -> 7319 Switch: 7229 -> 7319 Xbox: 7052 -> 7319 PlayStation: 7152 -> 7319 Changelog AI - Changed the spawn offset to be applied at the spawn point rather than the door. AI - Some furniture had its collision box incorrectly set, causing the AI to be stuck inside. AI - When closing the door before the day ends and while there's still people in queue, there was a chance of the customer just staying in queue. This should now be resolved. Art - Aligned the setup of the trader with the other NPCs. Art - The firewood storage decoration had missing mesh parts and incorrect normals. Console - Fixed frame rate to 30 FPS on consoles to prevent issues where Vsync would either run the game at 60 FPS at night and 30 FPS during the day. This contrast in frame rate felt worse than fixing the frame rate to an acceptable norm. Fix - Steam deck now automatically sets itself to 1280x800 per Steam's requirements. Objectives - The 'Alchemist of pain relief' objective should now also unlock blueberry seeds. Performance - The player character now combines the skinned mesh renderers instead of paying a performance cost for each of the components per frame. UI - Opening the shop will now indicate the employee wage cost and the cost will appear red if you can't afford to hire an employee. UI - The employee cost prompt should no longer show on the entrance while the shop is open. Stay tuned for a spooky update!Update 7229: Performance OptimizationsAug 12, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsHello Shopkeepers! This time around we're looking to align the versions across all platforms, so the Steam version is only getting a minor update while the consoles are getting a bigger patch. We're still working towards a large content update later this year, but we really needed to get this optimization patch out there. Steam Deck support! We finally got our hands on a Steam Deck, and we were able to fix a couple of minor issues when playing on the Steam Deck. In addition to that, the performance optimizations of this patch should also help towards better battery life. We have yet to obtain the official "Verified on Steam Deck" label, but we didn't want to wait for that to happen to get it fixed up on our end. Changelog Assets - Storage boxes were clipping out the backside of the first Large Old Cupboard. Assets - The sheep rug should now show an outline. Assets - Updated the storage cupboards with some additional geometry and properly set up components. Assets - Round Winter Carpet did not have a collider set. Other - Fixed an issue where the GOG build would throw a critical error when trying to call an achievement. Performance - Optimized the searching through objectives. Performance - Optimized the translator to not have to go through the language dictionary as often. Performance - Minor optimization in the Customer behaviour. Performance - Reduced shader complexity on object highlighting. Performance - Cached the delta time in the batched particle system. Performance - Disabled 'Two Sided' on foliage shader and added additional geometry to cover up holes. Steam Deck - The virtual keyboard now pops up when changing the shop name. Switch - Directional shadows are now enabled by default on Switch. Switch - The fire pits should no longer throw an error when previewing them in the Unlock Menu on Switch. Switch - Added geometry to walls and entrance doors to look better when lit per vertex on Switch. UI - Fixed an issue where controller prompts would not correctly show when starting a new game UI - Fixed main menu not correctly highlighting the menu button on Steam Deck UI - The furniture label should no longer stay on screen when transitioning to build mode when next to a lockable door. UI - Instantiating the Game Settings on UI initialization would cause performance spikes during gameplay. Small Update - v7150Jul 27, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsGreetings Shopkeepers! After taking some much needed time off, we're back in business with a new patch. We're working on a larger content update for later this year, but we wanted to get some other fixes & changes out to you sooner. Achievements - Switched to another Steamworks plugin, which is hopefully more consistent in triggering achievements. Art - Tweaked the basement hatch texture to take up less space. Build - Fixed an issue where furniture that was only slightly moved did not update the navmesh correctly. Commissions - Cancelling a commission will now reset the cooldown, allowing you to pick a different commission. Crafting - Material modifiers were not correctly being calculated when crafting items. Crafting - Doubled the bonus quality you get from using higher quality materials. Credits - Updated the credits to add a new translator and reflect the Korean font license. Input - Fixed a regression that would allow the player to walk around while the display menu was open using a controller. Input - Using the controller selector repeatedly would cause the selector to be visible while being able to walk around. Language - Updated all font asset files and translations. Language - Font assets were missing a space character which resulted in texts only showing the first word. Language - Added support for Korean community translations. Language - The 'Interface' translations for Czech were referencing the wrong language causing the translations to appear in Spanish. Languages - Updated the Chinese font asset file. Languages - Updated all translations. Languages - Added a check to see if a save file used the old naming for some languages. Objective - Changed 'Fueling the fire' objective by lowering the requirement from 20 to 15 and by including items from other categories. Objectives - The completed objectives count in the objectives menu was off because hidden legacy objectives could be unintentionally completed and would count towards the completed objectives count. Objectives - Variation 1 & Variation 2 would update with the incorrect triggers. Objectives - Objectives that require appeal would not correctly update when loading a save game. Objectives - Added an objective for 200 tiles b...Small Update - v7021May 19, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsIn this update you can look forward to more more fixes and improvements for issues that were reported or discovered since launch. This update aims to align the Winkeltje version number with console platforms to make it easier to communicate to all players what has changed on any platform. Some changes and improvements will have to wait until a later date as any changes or additions in language, that are not localized in all the supported languages, can cause the console deployment to be rejected. In addition, we are concerned that some planned fixes or improvements may cause regressions in other areas which is why we prefer smaller and more targeted updates like this one. Like always, if you come across any bugs, please don't hesitate to report them either on the Steam Discussion Board or through Discord (https://discord.gg/winkeltje). - Community reported issues. New Graphics: Added 1920x1020 support as this would help out Windows 11 users that are unable to remove the taskbar. Fixes Achievements - Fixed an issue with 'The Professional' in save files that had an incorrect value saved for crafting station experience. Build - Fixed an issue that would not mark furniture as invalid when it should. Input - Likely fixed an issue that could cause the interact and pickup selector to trigger when it shouldn't. Language - Czech translations have been updated. Objectives - Fixed issue where the 'Hire an Employee' objectives would start every time you loaded a save game. Objectives - Fixed an issue where the game could load (and start) the same objective multiple times. Storage - Upgrading the basement storage should not be possible while the shop is open. Attempting to interact with the basement storage while the shop is open will now indicate this via a warning message. UI - Improved the contextual furniture pick up prompt for controller to no longer show when the shop is open. UI - Added Czech community translator to the credits. UI - Fix for 'Alchemy Station' not being selectable on Switch. UI - Switching between a items of max crafting level and non-max crafting level in the crafting menu would not interrupt the skill progress animation and overwrite the correct value. Hotfix v7023 - Language : The 'Interface' translations for Czech were referencing the wrong language causing the translations to appear in Spanish. If you come across any bugs, please don't hesitate to report them either on the Steam Discussion Board or through Discord (https://discord.gg/winkeltje). - Community reported issues. New Graphics: Added support for 5120x1440. Fixes Audio - Attempting to open the radial menu during the tutorial would play the sound for it even if you were not allowed to use the radial menu yet. Build - Removing all the walls would allow you to place wall mounted furniture on the floor. Build - Collision overlap box would not extend up far enough, which would cause some furniture to not be correctly marked as invalid when selling a floor. UI - Yo...Thank you for supporting Winkeltje!May 3, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsAbout 1,5 weeks ago we released Winkeltje: The Little Shop out of Early Access and introduced the game to consoles accompanied by new content and features. With this post we would like to give you an update on how this went and what you can look forward to. Thank you! Let's start off with thanking everyone who has played Winkeltje since it arrived all these years ago on Steam Early Access! The 1.0 launch has gone above and beyond our expectations. We want to take this moment to sincerely thank you all for all the feedback, comments, reviews, and support. Bug Fixing Currently our top priority is to reproduce and fix all the major bugs and issues that have been reported since the launch. These major issues will be rapidly fixed as soon as possible before we move. Some of you are finding bugs that have probably been around for years, and we'd like to get as much of that fixed before moving on. Changes and fixes that make it into the game are listed as hotfixes in at the bottom of this post). For PC these were mostly small issues, though some of them very annoying (like the employees sometimes refusing to restock). Console Stability The main concern last week revolved around critical issues on consoles. Early on we got reports of save files being corrupted. We were unable to figure out what was causing this for a while, but eventually were able to track down the problem and roll out a fix. This is now patched on both Xbox & PlayStation, but is still pending validation by Nintendo for the Switch. We also saw some other issues, like the Planters not working or the Alchemy Station not being unlockable. The next Switch patch should fix the latter (the former is already fixed!). Do note that this will not fix broken saves, as they are corrupted beyond usage. This will ensure that newly created save files will no longer get corrupted. Languages There has been some confusion on why the PC has more translations than consoles. This basically boiled down to timing. To pass certification on all consoles, the translations needed to be completed in time. We weren't able to lock our translation file until relatively close to the release date, so we opted to launch on consoles with only English & Dutch (as we are able to do those ourselves). The Nintendo Switch should have access to English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Russian & Simplified Chinese already. The patches for Xbox & PlayStation that adds these languages are currently in certification and should be done by the end of the week at latest. We are still looking into the possibility of adding more languages to consoles, but have no new information on that at this stage. The Future Some of you have asked what our plans are now that the game has launched into version 1.0. Like mentioned, we'll be focusing on bug fixing for now. Most of these fixes will be pretty small (and some not so much), but we find it important to stabilize the game on all platforms before even considering new content. Once e...Winkeltje: The Little Shop - OUT NOW!Apr 22, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsRelease Day! https://youtu.be/UeWOUP_YFSU Winkeltje: The Little Shop is finally released on all major platforms! This time the update is focused on fixing bugs, correcting mistakes and setting the stage for the Launch Content Update. Read on for more information on what the next month or so will look like. Price Increase As announced earlier, the game will increase in price to $14.99 (or your regional equivalent) on the 4th of March. You can read the details in the initial announcement post. Launch Content Update As some of you know, we have been working on a large content update for the 1.0 launch. If everything goes well you can expect to see the Launch Content Update deployed on the unstable branch for public testing in the coming week. Since this is a large and important update for the 1.0 launch, we need to take the time to test and fix issues that we find to ensure the game is stable when it finally releases. You can help by playing on the unstable branch and report any issues you find in the #bug-reports-unstable channel on Discord. Instructions on how to switch to the unstable branch can be found in the #information channel on the Winkeltje Discord (https://discord.gg/winkeltje)! Key Rebinding A much requested feature has been key rebinding. After carefully analyzing the required changes we sadly had to come to the conclusion that at this stage we cannot take the risk to go for such a major change. The current implementation of user input & feedback (like the buttons you see on screen in the UI & Prompts) is very fragmented. Changing that at this point would be a multi-week effort in a lot of core systems which would introduce a huge amount of risk this close to launch. We're still looking at options and feedback to see if we can support limited rebinding. New Audio - Updated the main menu music with a new theme track. Changes Art - Bushy shaders should now get snow covered when outside and stop waving in the wind when placed inside. Art - Made the fire shader a smidge more yellow to closer resemble the feeling of fire. Art - Tweaked the table and chair colliders so chairs can fit underneath tables. Art - Tweaked the snow transition and snow materials to look better during the transitional period. Art - Adjusted the thickness of the centered structure beams on some of the wall pieces so they will not clip through paintings anymore. Art - Updated the shadowcasters on variant walls. Art - Reduced Solstice tree radius from 0.52 to 0.49 to make it easier to snap fit next to other assets. Art - Reduced the collider radius from the washing bucket to fit more tightly around the model. Art - Reduced the collider radius from the coat rack to fit more tightly around the model. Art - Made the darker leaves of bushes brighter to match better with other bushes. Audio - The restocking plop and thud sound effects are now in world space. Controls - Changing the wall masking preference using the keyboard hotkey should now be possible while the catalog menu is open. Effe...Upcoming Price IncreaseFeb 15, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsGreetings shopkeepers, As Winkeltje is approaching its 1.0 launch, the price will be increased from $12.99 to $14.99 (or your regional equivalent). This price increase will happen on 4th of March, 2022. Make use of this opportunity to save yourself some money by getting a copy of Winkeltje for yourself or someone else before the price increase happens. 3 Years, 50 Updates Winkeltje has received 50 updates over the past 3 years since the game was released into Steam Early Access. That is close to 1,4 updates per month! A full list of updates since launching into Early Access can be found here: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/949290 Pricing History For full disclosure, Winkeltje has increased its price once before. On February 19th 2019 you could obtain a copy of Winkeltje for $9.99. 13 months and about 20 updates later, the price increased to $12.99. Now, roughly 2 years and some 30 updates later we are going to reflect the increase in value one last time by setting the launch price of Winkeltje at $14.99. Launch Sneak Peek With the 1.0 launch of Winkeltje you are going to be receiving a lot of new content and a much requested new feature to help you run your shop. To prepare for this huge update we hope that you will join us in testing a preview of the 1.0 update on the unstable branch on Steam when we are ready to deploy it. We hope you will enjoy this little preview of what you can expect. ;) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/os4hxppu0w7y5i9/Shopkeeper992.gifNew Winkeltje LogoJan 25, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsDear Shopkeepers, We hope you like the new face of Winkeltje as this update marks the point where Winkeltje gets a new logo and icon for a fresh new in-game and online presence. This update once again appears light on the surface as work on the full release of Winkeltje is still very much progressing steadily. Some of the keen fans on Discord may have noticed some hints of what is to come. Unfortunately, we can't share this with you just yet until everything is ready and the time is right. New Logo! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/57mufh8t6ndatxy/Logo_Winkeltje_SD.png New Art - Winkeltje now has a fresh new logo and icon! Changes Art - Updated the Winkeltje logo. Art - Updated the game icon. Art - Updated the cursor icons. Balance - Community - Reduced the appeal of the Table Candlestick, Wall Candlestick, Lantern Stand, and Wall Lantern. Balance - Community - Lowered the amount required to complete the Master tailor, Master smith, Master chef, and Master alchemist objectives from 70 to 65. Objectives - Community - 'The smith' objective will now activate when the shop opens after having completed 'Sickle smith'. This will require some effort to complete but it will enable specialized blacksmiths to obtain the coveted sword before it naturally unlocks at shop level 38. UI - Split up the New Game Menu to have difficulty & scenario separated. Fixes Items - Community - Not all displays had some default rotation applied causing the random item rotation option in the game settings to do nothing. Items - Community - Enabling the item rotation setting would exit the loop early if an item slot was empty. Lights - Community - Reduced the light radius of the Table Lantern by half a unit to reduce overlapping light artifacts from showing. UI - The specialization histories group in the specialization menu was not visible. UI - Community - Loading a shop would incorrectly clamp the shop level to 39 instead of 40. UI - Community - Unlocking new items will now update the counter items so they may be purchased in the same day. UI - The planter menu would show a 'Craft' prompt when using a PlayStation controller. UI - It's now possible to close confirmation windows that have a single button by pressing any of the return keys on the keyboard. Hotfix Achievements - Achievements would only unlock in creative mode, instead of the other way around. Code - Changed converter 6414 to 6415. Code - Old converter would be triggered at the wrong time, causing a critical error. Customers - Moved the un-reserving of an access point to a slightly earlier point in the code when searching for a random place to move to. Employees - Fixed typo in the employee pool causing an error. Objectives - The stockpiler objectives were not updated when crafting which could result in the objective overview showing incorrect values. UI - Fixed a string that wasn't being translated. UI - In the load menu, added a check to ensure a saved variable exists before trying to use it. UI - Customers ...
