A soul guard is also chosen to ensure the alms' safe pilgrimage. Val is one such guard. On the day of the Faerie’s arrival, Val brings his childhood friend to the festival. As the sun falls beneath the skyline, all the spectators wait with bated breath, hoping to be chosen as an alm. The Faerie finally descends before Val's friend, appointing her the Alm of Fire. A set of mods insert him, along with Zelda and Link from Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, into the RPG game, so we can all live our RPG crossover fantasies. Created by user619, the mods replace the standard hero character skin with that of whatever leading character you choose. Geralt, massive JRPG sword in hand, is now Duran, a "proud young soldier from Valsena, Kingdom of the Plains". Everything else is untouched, leaving ol' grumpy faced Witcher-man of Rivia in the middle of this bubbly anime action-adventure game where the proportions are just a bit off and the colour scheme's a rainbow assault on the eyes. The video demo below has Kingdom Hearts vibes, if Sora was found about 25 years later after spending all that time as a private mercenary. The Link and Zelda mods are much less of a clash. You wait an age for Square to revive one of its beloved 90s RPG epics, then one comes along and causes such a stir you almost completely miss the second one that follows in its immediate wake. Or something like that, anyway. While Final Fantasy 7 Remake is an outlandishly expensive and extravagant exercise in blockbuster modern gaming, for better and for worse, the Trials of Mana remake is a much humbler affair, as its more modest launch attests. It's just as valid a revival, though, even if it isn't without its own faults. Chief among those is something you can't really blame Trials of Mana itself for. This doesn't have the warm veil of nostalgia around it like Final Fantasy 7, simply because Trials of Mana never really had an outing beyond Japan until a translation of Seiken Densetsu 3, as it was originally known, popped up in last year's Collection of Mana, and as such it's only the truly dedicated who have any vintage memories of the action RPG. I certainly can't pretend to have any of my own, and muddling through the first few hours of the 16-bit Trials of Mana was my first experience with the game. So one good thing about this new Trials of Mana is that it's a lot less muddled. This is, from the foundation upward, still an eccentric take on the RPG genre - you pick your party from a cast of six from the very off, and are locked into your chosen trio for the remainder of the game, while the actions that complement your standard attacks are carried out via a fiddly ring menu system - but it's been de-fussed. You're still locked into your choice here, but the combat is much less fiddly and easier to parse - indeed, when you have a full party and are flitting effortlessly between the three, it's got a supremely satisfying flow. Maybe that's because we don't see much by way of video game boxes anymore - they're fast becoming a thing of the past, for better and for worse. Playing the surprise Switch release of The Collection of Mana recently, though, I was reminded of the power of a strong piece of cover art - and of an artform that's in danger of being lost. I never played Secret of Mana first time around in the 90s, though it's lodged in my consciousness just as firmly as all those SNES classics that I did. (more…) Trials Of Mana is a Square Enix JRPG classic remade, one of three headed to PCJun 12, 2019 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunOne of the weirdest things about this year’s E3 is Square Enix realising that they’ve got a huge back-catalogue of excellent, untranslated JRPGs to bring west. Trials Of Mana is the new English name for Seiken Densetsu 3, a Super Nintendo action-RPG classic that never (officially) made it out of Japan. While there’s a gently remastered version headed to Switch, the PC is also due a full 3D remake early next year. They’re also remastering and localising pair of Japan-0nly games for us, from their more esoteric SaGa series; Romancing SaGa 3 on SNES, and SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions on Vita. (more…) Trials of Mana remake is headed to PC next yearJun 12, 2019 - PC GamerTrials of Mana, originally released in 1995 as the third part of Square's Mana series (and better known in Japan as Seiken Densetsu 3), is getting a "full high-definition remake" that's set to come out early next year. Trials of Mana tells the story of six adventurers who battle monsters to protect a world where the Goddess of Mana has been weakened following her battle with the eight Benevodons. Each playable character begins the game in a different location but they eventually end up in the same place, where they can team up in parties of three to embark upon the same quest: Save the dying Mana Tree and prevent the Benevodons from escaping their prison. Details on the remake are slight, but Square Enix said it will be "entirely rebuilt with revamped action-RPG battle, leveling and skill systems and modern 3D graphics." It already looks like it's coming together better than last year's Secret of Mana remake, which was not good.
