We are ecstatic to inform you that we have a new gameplay trailer live on the page! So we transition into seeking our next stage of development funding, we thought it important to show off some of the work we have been doing on the game! A lot of thought went into the structure of the trailer and we’d like to give you a sneak peek behind the curtain of how the proverbial sausage is made. The structure was divided into 5 parts. The aim of the trailer is to give viewers a rough sense of Trash’s game loop Part 1: Establishing The World The trailer opens with the podcast recording of the cultist E-Corp CEO denying his role in the downfall of the planet and humanity at large. Helping establish the setting of the game and highlighting the fall of humanity. Part 2: Emergence Of Resin Life Next we begin establishing the concept of resin life, with emphasis on the player characters known as Morphites. These are the Trash based lifeforms that the players play as throughout the game. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/40305017/7eeaab3a46a9ef238e2c7084d17167a62a7ce04c.gif Part 3: Crafting Forms & Gain Abilities Here we show a fundamental loop of gameplay for the viewer. We introduce the concept of collecting resources and using them to craft and attach forms. Forms grant players abilities to help them survive and thrive in the Trashy World. Part 4: Explore An Open World & Solve Procedurally Generated Challenge Zones Here we show the players exploring Trash's open world biomes, specifically the starting Valley Biome. They make their way into the game's procedurally generated challenge zones, procedural mazes constructed from an array of unique puzzles. These include jump puzzles, hunts, turbines, winding pathways, creature nests ect. Part 5: Cure The World Here we show that solving Challenge Zones removes hazards, allowing resin life to flow. Ideally we would show the features that are unlocked but we are not ready to show this yet! So you will have to stay tuned! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/40305017/c2b5724ea16f35ce4e7248a64f890e2e933162d0.gif Thanks so much for reading! You can support Trash by watching the trailer, showing your friends and most importantly WISHLISTING! Stay tuned for more garbage updates! Rubbish Dump #5: Crafting & Resources OverhallMay 21, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsHello Our Garbage People! I’m Hayley, one of the programmers helping to bring trash to life, and I’m here with a slightly late but exciting rubbish dump! Last week was a busy one as we were frantically bug fixing and polishing the latest version of trash to showcase at the ACMI audience lab over the weekend. One of the new features we managed to get back in the game was our crafting system! Crafting and resource collecting is going to be a big part of the gameplay experience in the final version of Trash so we wanted to get it back into the game for players to try as soon as we could. The premise is: in order to craft the forms that players will use to navigate the world of trash, they will need to first find and collect certain resources, then take them to the friendly crafting creatures who will help you create them. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/40305017/92443ce9f681d6127abf2701815914f2abe00ed3.gif As players progress, new resources will be discovered which in turn, allows players to craft different types of forms. In multiplayer games, forms crafted and resources collected will be shared amongst all players, so you can work together to solve puzzles and discover new places together! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/40305017/4a5db99ef77003d3a97f672e5c802e2bee623a0a.gif It was a challenge to have to update the very old, demo versions of the inventory and crafting system code to work with our newer systems but I’m very glad I managed it without having to start from scratch! Plus seeing the creatures finally work in game, especially when we implemented Yee’s super cute animations, was so rewarding and fun! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/40305017/49b10f8193b49610dc750dec87ef6745c949213b.gif I hope you enjoyed my garbage talk, watch this space for more updates from the rest of the team at Bin Chicken as we continue to work on “Trash” and bring our vision to life! Rubbish Dump #4: ACMI Audience LabMay 14, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsHello Our Garbage People! This weekend we spent two days with the public and a few other game developers here in rainy Melbourne in a lovely space, the Swinburne Studio at ACMI. The museum had invited us to participate in their Audience Lab event which brings together games, film and other screen media in development for playtesting with visitors! It was a great opportunity to get our work on the game into a playable state and we are really proud of a number of the new additions like upgradable world features that work with the reworked resources, the Cradle area which acts as a kind of hub, the new game intro cinematic, the new Turbine Challenge Element and a huge amount of work on the visual effects and lighting throughout the game. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/40305017/dc64c6dd39695f11c363a356fceea536d63a3a65.jpg We are delighted that players had a lot of fun with some of the improvements we’ve made to existing parts of the game since we last playtested. The new movement mechanics for the Boulder Ball ability went down particularly well, as did the discovery and collection of resources. For those of you who might be wondering, we don’t plan to bring out another playable demo so you’ll have to keep paying attention to these updates if you want to see the ongoing progress of the game. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/40305017/ff1c5e9e2686f0d85ea24fc8d73c322b141d08c7.jpg Thankyou to everyone who came along to the ACMI Audience Lab event on the weekend, it was a lot of fun! Rubbish Dump #3: Making New Hazard VFXApr 24, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsHello Our Garbage People! This is Seb speaking! I'm a Technical artist at Bin chicken studios and I'm here to share with you a kinda pretty but also slightly dangerous update on the Hazardous areas of Trash! We've been hard at work to get the hazard system in the challenge zones looking and feeling awesome, today I'm going to give you a quick overview of what to expect from this system and how it will affect your time in the world of Trash. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/40305017/254969a9cb82658a2c00dff322e5875ee488a99c.gif So for a quick overview of what the system is: While you are delving into the dangerous challenge zones by yourself or with some pals, you will come across a variety of different environmental hazards blocking your path. At this stage, we have implemented the first two sets of hazards which are fire or toxic based. These hazards will test your ability to navigate the space with varying degrees of difficulty, the challenges could include a ducting vent filled with gases igniting and releasing a torrent of flames, or a literal waterfall and river of toxic waste! It's going to be up to you to establish the best path forward or sometimes decide if it's worth the risk to get to scale the various puzzles for extra rewards! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/40305017/ad57eca89e2f3bd17b849cd2eb438fea03a49bcc.gif Its been a blast working on these initial Hazard types and there several more to come so stay tuned! I hope you enjoyed my garbage talk, watch this space for more updates from the rest of the team at Bin Chicken as we continue to work on “Trash” and bring our vision to life! And for those of you in Melbourne, mark your calendars for May 6th and 7th to join in on the public testing in person at ACMI! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/40305017/df127e18f8b24ace8e820e7323fd853ad9aca34f.gif You can keep an eye on the Audience Lab page here and sign up for emails to be notified when the event info goes live: ACMI Audience Lab Rubbish Dump #2: New Animated TrailerApr 14, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsHello Our Garbage People! I'm Yee, a 3D animator at Bin Chicken and I have been working on a *hush* *hush* animated trailer for Trash! With the help of Charlie our Creative Director, I was able to tell the prologue of Trash through animation. It will give you a brief peek into the world and the journey that you are going to embark on. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/40305017/3d9b44771ca763b2745a2332914b175f686fb105.gif The animated trailer won’t get released until later on, but here are some sneak peeks into the process of creating a game trailer: We started by coming up with the story before working on the storyboard. After the shots are finalised, we customised the character rig, set up the scene in Blender, and then playblasted them for a more precise timing edit. After that, it’s the long process of animating and refining. Rest be assured though, the process is not boring at all! One of the issues that I had to conquer was the CRASH. As I was working with a huge Blend file, dealing with crashes is a usual occurrence in my workflow. At one point, our whole Blend file just wouldn’t open up for me and it was devastating. Luckily, I found a way to salvage my progress and continued my work. Fingers crossed that there won’t be any crashes in my workflow in the future! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/40305017/e700bf7ad5b526a9c22998db2f09231869cdd217.gif Overall, it’s been a fun and amazing experience for us and we’re happy that it’s done so quickly! I hope you enjoyed my garbage talk and stay tuned for more updates from the rest of the team at Bin Chicken as we continue to work on “Trash” and bring our vision to life! And for those of you in Melbourne, mark your calendars for May 6th and 7th to join in on the public testing in person at ACMI! You can keep an eye on the Audience Lab page here and sign up for emails to be notified when the event info goes live: ACMI Audience Lab Rubbish Dump #1: Public TestingApr 3, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsHello Our Garbage People! Thanks so much to all our fans and players out there who played Trash’s early Public Alpha Demo and gave us such helpful and wonderful feedback! After the release of Trash’s Holiday Update, we took a brief dev holiday ourselves in order to refresh our wasted brains (our creative director was starting to wonder whether he was in fact himself, a trash based life form). Since returning we have spent a number of months looking over all the feedback and finding ways we can improve the demo before we move towards our next stage of development. What is this trash all about? The Taking Out The Trash Update isn’t a content update, rather a chance for us to add the things you asked for and make Trash easier to pick up and play!
