Arpeggiator | Community Puzzle SpotlightJun 9, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsHey folks, welcome to this week's puzzle spotlight! This time, we’re turning the spotlight on Arpeggiator, a puzzle pack by community creator Rocket. Originally put together during the Talos Principle demo days, If you haven’t played it yet, now’s the perfect time to dive in. Arpeggiator comes with 8 unique puzzles and 2 stars to collect, all set in some really beautiful and thoughtfully built environments. The puzzles range from chill and approachable to ones that’ll definitely make you stop and think. But when it clicks? That satisfaction hits hard. Rocket put a lot of care into this one, and it shows. From clever mechanics to smooth pacing. It’s a solid mix of fun and challenge for puzzle fans of all kinds. Also, don’t miss our little basement chat with Rocket, where we talked about how this pack came together and what it was like designing puzzles all the way back during the demo era. BASEMENT CHATS WITH YASEN ⚪ Hey Rocket, welcome to the basement! Your Arpeggiator pack is really fascinating, having puzzles for everyone from casual to more hardcore players. Have you had any prior experience with puzzle creation, from classic The Talos Principle or perhaps other puzzle games? I haven't had much puzzle creation experience. I've made a few puzzles for Portal 2, but they weren't good as I was young and wasn't considering puzzle design when creating them. That said, I enjoy puzzle games and will sometimes analyze a puzzle that stood out to identify what elements made it enjoyable. ⚪ That's quite interesting. How did you decide to pick up and make puzzles for The Talos Principle: Reawakened? The Talos Principle has been one of my favorite puzzle games since I first played it in 2019, and I've been following the series since. While I never touched it, I knew about the Serious Editor, which allowed for the creation of custom Talos puzzles, as I had played many of the Workshop releases. When the Talos Principle: Reawakened demo was released, I tried out the editor. The puzzle jam gave me enough motivation to make a few puzzles that I was happy with, using some puzzle ideas I hadn't seen elsewhere. ⚪ So you started pretty recently with The Talos Principle. We're happy to hear the puzzle jams have been motivating for you. Any advice you can give to players who still haven't tried the editor, maybe because they feel it's too hard or they're not confident in their skills? Give the editor a try—you'll never get better at using it if you don't. Recreating some of the puzzles from the official game can be a good way to learn the tools. Designing interesting puzzles is the hard part, but you only get better at that by actually creating puzzles. ⚪Good advice! And for yourself, do you have any future plans for creating more puzzles for The Talos Principle? I have a few puzzle ideas that I will turn into complete puzzles at some point, and I’ll contribute to any future puzzle jams. A long-term idea I have is to create a full DLC-length episode by combining small...The Talos Principle - Cerebral Puzzle ShowcaseMay 29, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsThe Talos Principle franchise is part of the Cerebral Puzzle Showcase, and all titles are currently on sale! We’ve officially wrapped up the Connectorless Puzzle Jam, and after carefully reviewing over 50 submissions, we’re thrilled to finally announce the winners. We were really impressed by the creativity and originality on display. Designing puzzles without one of the core mechanics of The Talos Principle, the connector, posed a tough challenge, but so many of you rose to the occasion with amazing creativity! There were many standout entries, and narrowing it down to just three was no easy task. But here are the puzzles that left the biggest impression on us. 🥇 1st Place – Walking on Glass by Wheat 🥈 2nd Place – Recycle by Joost 🥉 3rd Place – Aeolian Citadel by SpielmitStil Congratulations to the winners and a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated. Your contributions made this jam a success, and we loved seeing the different ways you explored puzzle design without the usual tools. We’re eager to keep the momentum going, so if you have ideas for future jam themes, feel free to share them with us. There’s clearly no shortage of creativity in this community, and we can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with next. Thanks again, and see you in the next challenge! The Co-op Principle | Community Puzzle SpotlightMay 9, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsHello everyone, and welcome to the latest episode of our Community Puzzle Spotlights! While exploring the incredible creations in the workshop last week, we were thrilled to discover "The Co-op Principle." This puzzle pack quickly stood out to us. We downloaded it, launched it, and found ourselves genuinely enjoying its unique asymmetric puzzle experience. "The Co-op Principle" draws inspiration from beloved co-op puzzle games like "We Were Here" and "Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes." It requires two players to communicate and collaborate, solving puzzles on their respective screens. Our playthrough was filled with laughter, and we were delighted to see how well this concept worked within the Talos universe. We highly recommend subscribing to this puzzle pack and trying it with a friend. Once you've experienced it, don't forget to share your thoughts on the puzzles in the comments or directly on the workshop page. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3470874980 Now, let's dive into a conversation with the talented creator behind "The Co-op Principle." Qoqqi! BASEMENT CHATS WITH YASEN ⚪Hello Qoqqi, it’s great to have you with us! Could you please introduce yourself to our readers? Since when have you been creating puzzles for The Talos Principle, and how long have you been part of our community? What initially inspired you to start designing puzzles for the game? I love playing puzzle games, and I also enjoy creating maps for various titles, including The Talos Principle. I’ve always been curious about creating things, I'm into modding and programming in general — although I haven't published most of my work. I first played Talos about three or four years ago. I was impressed with what the game offers: the story, the music (I love Virgo Serena and The Fall of Gehenna; Damjan Mravunac makes really good soundtracks—tell him I said hello), the addictive puzzles, and most importantly, the stars, that was the most interesting part. And yes, the easter eggs. :) The first map I ever created and published was "Elohim’s Creation" for TTP. I made it about a year ago after spending a month and a half diving into the Serious Editor. When I began working on it, I didn’t expect to build something truly substantial I was simply "testing out" the editor (which, by the way, is also why the puzzle "Intervention" turned out so small, it was the first puzzle I made). ⚪Your release of The Co-op Principle is one of the most unique takes on The Talos Principle. You’ve essentially created an asymmetric co-op experience, somewhat reminiscent of We Were Here. I had a fantastic time playing it with my friend. Could you share how the idea for such a puzzle concept came to you? Was it challenging to design puzzles that fit this cooperative format? I'm really happy you enjoyed it! I've always wanted the chance to play The Talos Principle with a friend (much like in Portal 2). Since there wasn’t an official way to do that, I decided to try building it myself....Puzzle Jam: Connectorless Edition!May 1, 2025 - Community Announcements{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45339004/ca1dd0b1ca7e9527bd28d727292ffddbc940165a.png Hey everyone! We hope you've been having a blast with Reawakened! Whether you're reliving the magic of the original Talos Principle or tearing your hair out over tough challenges like "DayDream", it’s been amazing watching the community dive back in. A lot of the puzzles in Reawakened were made by talented community members like you, and now, it’s your turn again! We’re kicking off a brand-new Puzzle Jam... with a twist: This time, it’s Connectorless! What’s the challenge? You can use laser beams. You can't use any connectors. No moveable ones, no static ones, nada! You can use any object that's not a connector (Hexahedron, Recorder, etc) Connectors have been a huge part of Talos, so we're super excited to see what wild ideas you come up with when they're off the table. You’ll have two weeks to visualize, build, and submit your puzzles. Post them on Steam and share them on Discord, and we'll be picking the winners ourselves at Croteam! Deadline Jam starts: May 1st, 2025 Jam ends: May 12th at 2025, 23:00 CET Submissions Upload your puzzle to Steam. In the puzzle description, make sure to include: "#ConnectorlessPuzzleJam" to participate in the jam There is no need to add "Puzzle Jam" to your puzzle name. Also, drop your submission in the Puzzle Jam tag channel on our Discord submissions forum. Winners The winners will be selected by us at Croteam. We will choose the top three puzzles and award them with a Croteam Bundle Key, which includes all Croteam games! We can't wait to see what you come up with, and remember no connectors allowed! Have fun!The Talos Principle Reawakened Update 1.01bApr 30, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsHey folks, we've deployed a small hotfix update focused on bug fixes for painting mechanics, dialogue progression, graphics rendering, and gamepad inputs. Back To Reality | Community Puzzle SpotlightApr 16, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsHi everyone! The Talos Principle is back with Reawakened, and we're incredibly happy to see our modding community alive and kicking. More than 80 community puzzles have been published in the Workshop since its launch, so we thought it was fair to play through them and shine a light on some of the most creative and well-crafted submissions. After all, these user-made creations deserve recognition for their ingenuity, design, and the unique challenges they bring to the world of The Talos Principle. In each spotlight, we'll feature standout puzzles and a few words from their creators, offering insights into their design process and what inspired them. Let’s kick off this series with a look at Back To Reality. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3464331222 This puzzle makes excellent use of connectors, fans, hexahedron, and recorder devices, cleverly combining them in a way that feels both challenging and rewarding. While it leans toward the more difficult side, don’t let that or the presence of a recorder discourage you. The puzzle is built around a series of smart, well-thought-out steps that will make you feel clever as you progress. By the time you reach the final move, the sense of accomplishment is incredibly satisfying leaving you with that classic "aha!" moment that we all strive for. Back to Reality was created by Benzo, who was kind enough to give us a virtual sit-down and chat about the puzzle and what inspired it. BASEMENT CHATS WITH YASEN ⚪ Hey Benzo, it's a pleasure to have you here! You've been a long-time puzzle enthusiast and creator, known for your iconic collections like Schrödinger’s Cat for the original Talos Principle, as well as many contributions to the Portal series. Could you tell us a bit more about your background? When did you first get into puzzle games, and what inspired you to start designing your own? It all started in 2015. Braid was the first puzzle game I ever played. After seeing others create mods, I thought, Why not try it myself? I finished my first mod in 2016. That same year, I started playing Portal and The Talos Principle. When I discovered that both games had Steam Workshop support, I began creating puzzles. The level editor for Portal was relatively easy to use, so I made a number of puzzles for it. The editor for The Talos Principle, however, was much more advanced, and at the time, I gave up on the idea of making puzzles for it. But I actually loved The Talos Principle more—it had beautiful scenery, charming background music, and a fast player movement speed. So in 2018, I decided to learn how to use the Serious Editor through various resources, and eventually completed my project Schrödinger's Cat. Later, in 2019, the Serious Editor was updated, which made many older Steam Workshop levels incompatible. As a result, I updated my levels and released Schrödinger’s Cat Level Pack 1 through 3. ⚪ With Reawakened introducing a new, more user friendly level editor that's accessible to the co...The Talos Principle: Reawakened goes back to the beginning for a touching coda to its musings on what it means to be humanApr 11, 2025 - PC GamerI'm a big fan of the Talos Principle games, and so was happy to hear that the original, now more than 10 years old, was getting the remaster treatment as The Talos Principle: Reawakened. And it's not just a graphical overhaul: The updated edition also features an entirely new chapter that takes players back to the very earliest days of the simulation that brought about the rebirth of humanity... With the launch of The Talos Principle: Reawakened, we'll remove the demo from circulation. This also means the workshop for it will be shut down and replaced by the main game's workshop. Unfortunately, there's no elegant way for us to migrate your cherished puzzles to the main app, so we'll need you to do it yourself should you want to make sure your efforts and ideas are playable moving forward. The import process is a one-time operation, and we tried really hard to make it super simple. Before we break things down, there are a few requirements: You need to own the full game on Steam You need to have created at least one episode in the demo (doesn't have to be published) Migrating your puzzles Download The Talos Principle: Reawakened Start the full game (do not start the Demo) Visit the Community Puzzles section from the main menu Here, you will a new button in the bottom right corner, reading IMPORT DEMO EPISODES. Press this button and confirm the action in the upcoming prompt. This will make the game automatically detect episodes created in the demo and will transfer them to the full game. Publish episodes you wish to make available in the workshop. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45339004/dd5f41177d0095d4a10f331d6a44a01f6709f39c.jpg The Import demo episodes button is visible in the "Community Puzzles" section accessible from the Main Menu. NOTE: If you don't see this button, you most likely don't have any local episodes in the demo. Note that you need to have the working files of the episode, not just a downloaded copy. In case you encounter any problems while trying to migrate your experiences from the demo, please Join our Discord and ask for help. Someone is always there to assist. Much love from Croteam! The Talos Principle: Reawakened (PC) ReviewApr 10, 2025 - CGMagazineI like to think of myself as a puzzle enthusiast, with multiple puzzle-oriented games scattered throughout my gaming résumé. Every once in a while, though, one comes along that changes everything about how I approach a puzzle and truly engages the mind. The Talos Principle 2 was that game for me most recently. Having missed the original title when it was released back in December 2014, I eagerly jumped into its sequel and haven’t looked back. Now that the original is getting the remaster treatment — titled The Talos Principle: Reawakened — along with brand-new content, there’s no better time to see where it all began and find out if I still have the puzzle bug. I won’t spend much time on the original game, but the premise is quite simple at its core: you control a robot in the not-too-distant future and must solve various puzzles of steadily increasing difficulty while being forced to reconcile your place in the world as a robot — not a person. The philosophical implications... Read more Rebuilt for the Community, by the CommunityApr 9, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsHoly robot! The Talos Principle: Reawakened is less than 24 hours away! As you know by now (hopefully), Reawakened features a brand new chapter—In the Beginning. This new chapter is not just a regular old thing that Croteam made. Oh, no! With it, we had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with some of the most talented creators from our modding community. Under the guidance of our gameplay designers, these contributors helped craft puzzles that evolved from early prototypes into fully realized experiences within the chapter. In the Beginning consists of 18 puzzles in total—16 of which were created by these talented contributors: Mauritsio, Innocentive, Renan "RFC" Cavalieri, Ana "Phoenix" Messina, and Adrià Valls Puig. We're proud of the creativity and passion they brought to the project, and it's been amazing to watch their ideas come to life. Now, we'd like to introduce these contributors and give them a chance to share a bit about themselves and their journey within the community. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45339004/c64bf2b2ebdbb44a2ff894a8c067b809922a5937.gif From Prototype to Puzzle: Dead End by Adrià Valls Puig. Mauritsio I'd made some puzzles for the Workshop of the original game, but that was a long time ago, and I certainly didn't want to retread old ground. This time, I drafted several ways for the game's mechanics to interact with one another in ways that hadn't been done in the base game before. I then built several variations on top of that and ended up combining them into one extended puzzle. But at some point, I realised I'd gone overboard with the difficulty, so I decided to make the latter half of the puzzle optional by placing a Star at the end. I'm glad that Croteam's gameplay designers enjoyed it enough to include it — I hope you enjoy it too! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45339004/8b28c1f0f637833a547203c278c3f1026c4459f8.gif From Prototype to Puzzle: Eclipse by Mauritsio. Renan "RFC" Cavalieri & Ana "Phoenix" Messina Ana and I discovered The Talos Principle in 2014 after I finished Serious Sam 3 and wanted more from Croteam. I found it on their Steam page, tried the demo, loved it, and shared it with Ana, who was just as amazed. We bought it immediately, and it changed us. Aside from Portal, we were not into puzzle games, but The Talos Principle was different. Its puzzles were fun, and the story was captivating. We started following Croteam on Facebook, and it was only in 2020, during the pandemic, that we joined their Discord server and became active in the community. That was when we also started learning the Serious Editor. We had worked on small mods before for Team Fortress 2, Half-Life, and Portal, but this was a game changer. It gave us real insight into game development. It also led to an incredible opportunity. We got to test The Talos Principle 2. Contributing to a game we love was an unforgettable experience, and we gained a wealth of knowledge along the way. We played a lot of prototype puzzles during that time and learned the...What Makes a Remaster Matter? Inside The Talos Principle: ReawakenedApr 7, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsWow! The Talos Principle: Reawakened launches this week. It's been an incredible journey to this point. One that we wanted to take for several years now, because we felt like The Talos Principle - even if it stands the test of time - deserves to become something more. When we set out to create Reawakened, we asked ourselves: what would we like to see in a remastered game, if we were buying one? An updated version of the game, sure, but what else makes this kind of project exciting? Behind-the-scenes commentaries and the Puzzle Editor were one answer, but what about returning to the world and story of the game itself? What about more puzzles? Another story to join the main game and Road to Gehenna? That's where In the Beginning comes in. We considered a variety of approaches to the story, but ultimately the Talos series has always been about character-driven storytelling, and it made the most sense to return to two of our main characters. In the Beginning is a glimpse of life at the Institute for Applied Noematics in the last days of the old world, a different look at Alexandra Drennan and the AI that would eventually become Elohim. There are no great plot revelations or expositions of "lore" here; it's an intimate character piece about people facing the end and doing their best for the sake of the future, told through the first test run of the Simulation. After all, philosophy is the question of how to live a good life - even if that life is about to end. Croteam has always had an amazing fan and modding community, and more than a few modders have actually joined the ranks of Croteam over the years. So to create the new puzzles, we decided to invite some of our most talented fans to contribute their designs - under the guidance of the original designers, of course, who selected and adjusted the puzzles to the needs of the game. And yes, if you're wondering: everybody got paid for their work. Stay tuned for more on that tomorrow. The Talos Principle Reawakened: Thinking Not RequiredApr 1, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsWe’re excited to unveil The Talos Principle Reawakened not just a remaster, but a complete modernization of the 2014 classic, carefully redesigned for 2025 gaming standards.
