The Last Remnant

The Cheerer and the Jeerer Square Enix's show as it happenedJun 10, 2019 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun The Cheerer and the Jeerer is our version of the traditional E3 press liveblog. Matt and Brendan are both at the conferences – but one of them can only be upbeat and positive, while the other can only be snarky and negative. Let’s go! Matt: This is it. The final blog down. Square Enix are about to tell us about what they’re up to, and we’ve both reported to our liveblogging stations for the very last time. Both Cheerer and Jeerer have one more opportunity to don their respective masks of love and loathing, but who will take up each mantle? Actually, forget I asked. Jetlag has snuck up on us both and filled our hearts with jeer, but I’m the one writing this intro so I get to bagsy it. Plus it’s my turn anyway. Nuh-nuh. Square Enix's role-playing game will soon be discontinued on PC nearly a decade after it came out. In Europe, The Last Remnant will be delisted at 5pm UK time on 4th September, which means you have just over a week to grab it from Steam before it's scrubbed forever. Of course, if you already own the game you will be able to play as normal. In its note on Steam, Square Enix failed to explain why The Last Remnant was being delisted on PC, but it did thank players. Mysteriously stating no reason in their announcement, the publisher and developer say the game will be leaving the storefront on September 4th, although existing owners and those who pick it up now will still be able to play the game after removal. I’m sad to see it go. While the game was not without issue (and frightfully opaque at times), I always considered it one of the studio’s more creative and experimental games, and vaguely reminiscent of their SaGa series. Thanks to everyone who’s adventured with the Mitras, Yamas, Qsitis and Sovanis!Square Enix Working on New RPG. It's Not Final FantasyNov 28, 2011 - Kotaku Nor is it Dragon Quest. As mentioned in an upcoming issue of Famitsu, the Tokyo-based game company is working on a new action role-playing game. The game currently does not have a title. While info has leaked from Famitsu, the full article has yet to hit newsstands. Helming the game will be Ryutaro Ichimura, who produced several Dragon Quest games, including Dragon Quest IX, Dragon Quest Swords and kiddy arcade game Dragon Quest Battle Road. Square Enix will develop the game, an action role-playing game, internally—on the Epic Unreal Engine. This isn't a first for Square Enix, who also did The Last Remnant (above, pictured) on Unreal. According to the leak, Famitsu has images of the game's protagonist. And the game's character design looks as though it's aimed at Western players. Currently, the core staff working on the game consists of 35 individuals. Square Enix plans on running help wanted ads to assemble a bigger team. Ichimura apparently told Famitsu that two years were spent circling the globe, surveying players, assembling art, and solidifying the basis of the game. Not sure why 2 years required. They could have just played Mass Effect or The Elder Scrolls and called it a day. If this leak turns out to be true, expect confirmation later this week. In the meantime, Kotaku is following up with Square Enix. 【スクエニ】新大プロジェクト発表!完全新規ARPG始動! You can contact Brian Ashcraft, the author of this post, at [email protected]. Square Enix licenses Unreal Engine 3 for multiple gamesNov 17, 2011 - ShacknewsSquare Enix has announced that it plans on using Unreal Engine 3 on "multiple games." The deal was brokered in part by Epic Games Japan. "Many Western games have achieved great success with the Unreal Engine, and this milestone reflects the Japanese development community’s trust in our technical prowess," Epic Games Japan's Taka Kawasaki said in the announcement. "We can’t wait to see how Square Enix fuses the power of Unreal Engine 3 with its beautiful characters, enthralling storylines and fantastic gameplay." The announcement is odd, given the company's investment in its own proprietary engines, including Crystal Tools used on Final Fantasy XIII, the unrelated Crystal Engine for Deus Ex and Tomb Raider, and the Glacier Engine for IO Interactive's games. The company is also working on a next-gen DX11 engine currently called the Luminous Studio. It's also not the first time the company has used the Unreal Engine. The Last Remnant (pictured above) was an internally-developed RPG using Epic's tech, and was critically panned for its various technological shortcomings. Given the company's focus on its own internal engines, and its poor history with Unreal Engine, it's surprising that the company is giving the engine a second chance. It's likely that whatever projects utilizing Epic's toolset will be very multiplatform. Unlike Square Enix's own tools, Unreal Engine 3 can be deployed on a number of platforms, including PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, Vita, and (probably most importantly of all), iOS. Square Enix signs Unreal Engine 3 for "multiple" unannounced gamesNov 17, 2011 - EurogamerFinal Fantasy maker Square Enix has signed Epic's Unreal Engine 3 to make multiple unannounced games. Square Enix signed on the bottom line after meeting with Epic Games Japan, the Gears of War developer's Japanese branch. It is unclear which games this deal relates to, but quotes from Taka Kawasaki, territory manager of Epic Games Japan, suggest Square Enix Japan will make use of the tech. "Many Western games have achieved great success with the Unreal Engine, and this milestone reflects the Japanese development community's trust in our technical prowess," he said. "We can't wait to see how Square Enix fuses the power of Unreal Engine 3 with its beautiful characters, enthralling storylines and fantastic gameplay." Square Enix Japan creates the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts games. Its studios in the West make Tomb Raider, Hitman, Kane & Lynch, Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain. Hitman maker IO Interactive uses the new Glacier 2.0 engine, which is next-gen ready. Crystal Dynamics' CDC Engine is used for the upcoming Tomb Raider. Details about the games using the Unreal Engine under this license agreement will be revealed by Square Enix, Epic said. Square Enix Japan recently announced its next generation engine, Luminous Studio. Luminous Studio is said to be similar to Unreal Engine, and is DirectX 11 ready in anticipation of the transition to the next generation of consoles. The deal with Epic suggests Unreal Engine 3 will be used in the short term by Square Enix. Square Enix has form with Unreal. It used the tech to make role-playing game The Last Remnant in 2008.
