The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Bethesda would "probably say no" to an Elder Scrolls show or movieApr 12, 2024 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunWith the Fallout live-action show now out and honestly far better than I was expecting, are Bethesda also brewing an adaptation of their other big RPG series, The Elder Scrolls? Not at present, according to Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard, and he says he'd "probably say no" if approached. Mind you, that was the stance he had until Fallout finally fell into place. Read more Is an Elder Scrolls TV show going to follow Fallout? Bethesda doesn't seem to be in any rushApr 11, 2024 - VG247Amazon's Fallout TV Show is here now, but before it was, the show had a swanky Hollywood premiere that I'm sure my invite for got lost in the post. At that premiere, snazzily dressed Todd Howard said some things, and some of these things were about the potential idea of an Elder Scrolls adaptation. When it comes to such a thing, it sounds like Howard's plan is - simply put - to keep on being picky. Yup, picky, but in what should be a good way. After all, if someone's going to turn the Lusty Argonian Maid into the blockbuster hit of summer 2034, we need to make sure they understand what the political climate of Morrowind was like when Crassius Curio wrote the damn thing. Speaking to IGN on the red carpet, Howard was asked about the idea of other Bethesda IPs potentially getting the adaptation treatment, be that a TV show like Fallout or something else. "I don't know. There's nothing in the works," the BGS big cheese said. Read more Yes, that Oblivion quest where you totally ruin a dinner party via an underpants spell is in SkyblivionFeb 2, 2024 - VG247Remember the Oblivion quest where you crash a dinner party and unleash a cheeky underpants-based spell on some rich folks? Well, Skyblivion's developers have just given us a look at the massive mod's version of it during a showcase at C3. For those who aren’t familiar, Skyblivion is the massive modding project that's remaking the fourth entry in the Elder Scrolls series in Skyrim’s engine. The team behind it are currently set to finally release their incredible creation in 2025, but have been providing fans with plenty of previews and sneak peaks in the interim, with the latest of these coming as part of C3, a big Bethesda community modding showcase. In this latest Skyblivion showcase stream, project lead Kyle 'Rebelsize' Rebel and quest developer Scott 'Fishfiend' Whiting kicked off with an impromptu look a funny little Imp model. Interestingly, the team is currently at a point with the mod where certain locations are being finalised and others that are linked to specfic quests are busy being revamped in ways that make them look even cooler than they did in the original game, making the most of the newer engine being used. Read more Creator of Skyrim's dragons and Fallout 4's deathclaws set to speak at new Bethesda community modding eventJan 22, 2024 - VG247If you’re a fan of Bethesda games, a new community modding event that’s set to take place on Twitch towards the end of next week looks well worth checking out, especially now that the artist behind some of Skyrim and Fallout 4’s most iconic creatures is set to make an appearance at it. No matter whether your poison of choice is Skyrim, Fallout 4, Starfield, or something a bit more retro (sorry, old people) like Oblivion, if you’re interested in installing or creating mods for Bethesda games, the chance to get a glimpse at the work going into some of the community’s biggest projects is hard to pass up. That’s exactly what it looks like C3, the latest event organised by charity initiative Fallout For Hope, will offer, in addition to some other interesting streams. As announced via Twitter, former Bethesda character artist Jonah Lobe, who gave the likes of Skyrim’s dragons, Fallout 4’s deathclaws, and Fallout 3’s aliens their iconic appearances, is the latest community figure set to make an appearance at the event, which is set to take place on Twitch across February 2 and 3. Much like all of the previous community events put on by Fallout For Hope, which has teamed up with the likes of Sheogorath voice actor Wes Johnson in the recent past, C3 - or Community Creations Con - is set to raise money for a good cause, with Make-A-Wish International having gotten the nod this time. Read more Elder Scrolls Online gets a new expansion in June, plus a 15 month-long birthday party, which feels greedyJan 19, 2024 - VG247The Elder Scrolls Online’s next expansion, dubbed Gold Road, is set to arrive this summer following a big reveal as part of last night’s big Xbox Developer Direct. The game is also getting a 15 month-long tenth birthday celebration, which seems a tad excessive (we're just jealous really). Yes, it’s almost a decade since Zenimax looked at World of Warcraft (among others), looked at The Elder Scrolls, and thought something along the lines of ‘why not us, man?’. Despite not quite being the cup of tea of many single-player loving mainline Elder Scrolls fans, ESO’s amassed a pretty huge player base of MMO-enjoyers over the years, who’ll get to head on a new adventure in Cyrodiil this June. Said adventure comes in the form of the Gold Road expansion, which you can check out a cool trailer for below. For veteran ESO players, it looks like Gold Road will serve as a bit of a follow-up to last year’s Necrom expansion, while offering the chance to explore some classic locations you’ll likely remember from Oblivion, in the form of the Imperial province’s West Weald region and its central city, Skingrad. Read more Teleporting synths delivering pizzas? It must be a great new Fallout 4 modDec 4, 2023 - VG247There’s now a Fallout 4 mod that allows you to order a pizza from the Institute and have it delivered to you in very rapid fashion by a teleporting synth delivery boy. Yes, this is an actual thing, and if you’ve decided to kick off another romp through The Commonwealth after watching the trailer for Amazon’s Fallout TV Series, it looks pretty perfect for keeping your Sole Survivor well-fed during their adventures. After all, who hasn’t ended up fancying a margarita while wandering through some irradiated ruins? That seems to be the sentiment behind Hrodeberht1 and Bella’s ‘Syntho Pizza - Commonwealth Pizza Delivery’, which allows you to order a “rad-free pizza made from BioScience's best ingredients” and have it quickly delivered by a synth that’ll be teleported to your location. Or, as the mod’s description declares: “The Institute finally decided to actually do something useful for the future of mankind (or maybe it's just a PR stunt), and now offers pizza delivery to the people of the Commonwealth.” Read more Waiting for news on the Elder Scrolls 6? This spooky new Skyblivion showcase could scratch your itchNov 2, 2023 - VG247Given that it’s infamous for featuring some terrifyingly bizarre NPC encounters, Oblivion makes a pretty good game to play during spooky season, something the latest Skyblivion showcase proves. For those who aren’t familiar, Skyblivion is the massive modding project that aims to remake the fourth entry in the Elder Scrolls series in Skyrim’s engine. The team behind it are currently set to finally release their incredible creation in 2025, but have been providing fans with plenty of previews and sneak peaks in the interim, with the latest of these showing off some of the mod’s most hair-raising elements. The majority of the video, which you can watch in full here, provides a walkthrough of the fittingly blood-curdling Oblivion quest that sees the player seek out a cure for vampirism, which any adventurers who’ve ever accidentally stumbled into a dungeon full of fanged foes will definitely remember. Read more That Oblivion remaster is seemingly real, and Fallout 3 might be getting one tooSep 19, 2023 - VG247It might be your time to rejoice, Oblivion and Fallout 3 fans, as a big Microsoft leak appears to have confirmed remasters for the pair of games are on the way. Today is not Microsoft's day, as a whole bunch of confidential details have emerged from some documents as part of the FTC's case against the tech company. For one, it's been revealed that Dishonored 3 is in the works, and perhaps slightly surprisingly, a Ghostwire: Tokyo sequel too. But the thing that Bethesda fans will most likely be interested in is that remasters of both The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and Fallout 3 are in the works. The leaked documents were shared on Resetera, showing a list of games and the years they were expected to release in. It's important to note that the Oblivion remaster was apparently planned to have been released in 2022, but obviously that year has come and gone, and we're almost finished with 2023 without any kind of official announcement about it. There was a rumour earlier this year about a potential Oblivion remake that Virtuos Games is apparently working on, but again, no confirmation on that just yet. Virtuos Games is a studio that predominantly co-develops games, and is currently assisting Konami on the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake. Read more Everybody's favourite Oblivion voice actor is back in StarfieldSep 7, 2023 - VG247One particular character in Starfield sees the return of a voice actor who's worked with Bethesda across its games for a long time. You might not know his name, but if you're a fan of Bethesda, you almost certainly know his voice. I'm talking about Wes Johnson, of course, a voice actor who's offered his tones to Bethesda as far back as Morrowind. Though you'll probably most likely remember him for his work in Oblivion, in particular as all of the members of the Imperial Watch, noted for their classic "Stop! You violated the law," line, amongst others. If you do remember Johnson's work, you'll probably be happy to hear that he's back in Starfield, this time voicing a character called Ron Hope. Ron, ironically enough, can be found in HopeTown, which is a settlement based on Polvo in the Valo system. He's also the CEO of HopeTech (sensing a running theme here), who you can take a mission from that involves finding a thief. Much like his Imperial Guard counterpart, he's also a bit of a stickler for holding criminals accountable, with the clip above showing how he wants the thief to be "prosecuted to the full extent of the law." Read more Starfield's "are planets planets" debate recalls the amazingly weird cosmology of Elder ScrollsAug 29, 2023 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunYou may have noticed a mounting squabble between Starfield fans and detractors concerning the game's planetary maps, triggered by some leaks or fake leaks over the past week. Said skirmish has now escalated to "-gate" status, with "Tilegate" doing the rounds on forums and even creeping into search results, presumably much to the alarm of innocent, unaligned ceramics company Tilegate Trading Llc in Florida. The nub of the dispute seems to be thus: some people claim the procedurally generated tiles that comprise many Starfield environments actually glue together into complete globes, so that you can see and walk from one to the other and, indeed, all around the equator, while others claim they're discrete maps with invisible walls, similar to those of the astonishing "dreamable" space sim Noctis. Who knows, we might have an under-embargo Starfield review in the works that will lay matters to rest. In the short term, the uncertainty about whether Starfield's planets are actually planets puts me in mind of comparable celestial angst in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls games, where planets are more properly described as planes of existence, conjured by immortal beings, which sort of orbit the mortal world of Tamriel. I've been revisiting how Bethesda's mainstay fantasy games thought about outer space in the run-up to Starfield, and while I'm intrigued by the new game's portrayals of celestial mechanics (latest discovery: the Starfield starmap represents stellar and planetary gravity as dimples on a kind of galactic tarpaulin, as in old Stephen Hawking documentaries), I'll be very surprised if it offers anything quite as wonderfully bizarre. The studio - itself at the centre of a previously leaked Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake which proved on the money - may very well be getting its hands on another fan favourite. But first, the source. Earlier in the week Reddit User Suicidal_tendencie posted on the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit. This is a well-known hub for every leaky ship in the industry - both real and fictitious. The poster, claiming to be an ex-employee from Virtuous Games, revealed a range of projects including an Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remake, although couldn't provide any screenshots as evidence. "It is done currently using a pairing system, so it means that the remaster is running using both an Unreal Engine 5 project, and the Oblivion one. For instance, new graphics are rendered in the UE5 project, but most of the gameplay / physics /etc is still done in Oblivion. It should be released end of next year/ early depending m0stly if it's a remake or a remaster. It is mostly done in Paris, but Blackshamrock also helps the studio for the art." The company put an in-game item on sale for real-world money, in a full-price game. It was a cosmetic horse armour set for $2.50. Oblivion's controversial horse armour is largely thought of as the first microtransaction in a AAA, premium game. Today, horse armour is one of many items you can buy in plenty of games, including the recently released Diablo 4. But while the idea is not new, these prices certainly are. Alongside the Diablo 4 early access launch on Friday, the in-game shop went live with a variety of bundles. The store has a similar structure to those seen in most modern games (including Activision Blizzard's Call of Duty). It offers bundles of character skins, horses, and horse armour.
