Ambitious Skyrim mod celebrates 22 years of Morrowind with new videoMay 1, 2024 - PCGamesNSome mods aren't just ambitious, they're almost akin to making an entire game from scratch. Skywind, the huge upcoming Skyrim mod which will incorporate all of Morrowind, definitely fits that bill. In development for over a decade, the team behind the mod has just released a brand new video to celebrate 22 years of Morrowind, giving the first major update on the project for a while. Not at present, according to Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard, and he says he'd "probably say no" if approached. Mind you, that was the stance he had until Fallout finally fell into place. For those who aren’t familiar with the project in question, Tamriel Rebuilt, its goal is a simple one, to expand TES 3’s playable area beyond the base game’s setting of Vvardenfell, an island located in the centre of Morrowind. Over the years, the team of modders have been gradually adding new explorable sections of the province’s mainland to the game via updates to the mod, with the latest of these to arrive being Andaram. The expansion, which is the project’s seventh, “is centred on the middle Thirr River, and the dark secrets which lie under its waters”. Packed into this area are over 100 quests and nine faction questlines, with the latter including “a new vampire clan and the highly anticipated Andothren Thieves Guild”. But the Bethesda RPG game remains a reliable old workhorse, capable of surprising us more than 20 years after it first launched. We've seen mods, overhauls, and even a full Morrowind remake, but the tech underlying Bethesda's beautiful beast is useful for much, much more. Enter RoboWind Construct, a new shooter with hints of System Shock, Deus Ex, Half-Life, and maybe a glimpse of an alternate universe where Starfield was built as an FPS in the '90s. And it's all, somehow, built on the same systems as The Elder Scrolls Morrowind. Read the rest of the story... Said skirmish has now escalated to "-gate" status, with "Tilegate" doing the rounds on forums and even creeping into search results, presumably much to the alarm of innocent, unaligned ceramics company Tilegate Trading Llc in Florida. The nub of the dispute seems to be thus: some people claim the procedurally generated tiles that comprise many Starfield environments actually glue together into complete globes, so that you can see and walk from one to the other and, indeed, all around the equator, while others claim they're discrete maps with invisible walls, similar to those of the astonishing "dreamable" space sim Noctis. Who knows, we might have an under-embargo Starfield review in the works that will lay matters to rest. In the short term, the uncertainty about whether Starfield's planets are actually planets puts me in mind of comparable celestial angst in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls games, where planets are more properly described as planes of existence, conjured by immortal beings, which sort of orbit the mortal world of Tamriel. I've been revisiting how Bethesda's mainstay fantasy games thought about outer space in the run-up to Starfield, and while I'm intrigued by the new game's portrayals of celestial mechanics (latest discovery: the Starfield starmap represents stellar and planetary gravity as dimples on a kind of galactic tarpaulin, as in old Stephen Hawking documentaries), I'll be very surprised if it offers anything quite as wonderfully bizarre. I love Skyrim, with its snow-capped mountains, chunky, clunky sword-and-shield physics, and of course, the dragon-slaying, but the grimy world of Morrowind is perhaps the most captivating, and Oblivion, surely, has the best story. Even then, if we're charting the history of RPG games, we have to pay respect to Elder Scrolls Arena and Daggerfall, and there's also the much-improved multiplayer hit ESO.
