The Conquest of Go

Update 0.28.0 - Online Campaign Matches and Review ImprovementsMar 12, 2024 - Community AnnouncementsNew Features There are a lot of new features and changes that come with this update. If any issues are encountered, please create a post in the Bug Reports & Support Subforum. Online Campaign Matches Players can now play their campaign matches against online opponents. Similar to the existing online mode, these matches take place on the Online Go Server. Because of this, players can optionally play part of a match in The Conquest of Go and continue to play on the Online Go Server website or other 3rd party applications at other times without issue. The Conquest of Go will catch the games state back up to date during the next campaign play session. In addition to human opponents, there are dozens AI of different strength that can also be played online. Please bear in mind that these AI are run by members of the OGS community and may have different availability and requirements for match criteria (board size, time settings, etc.) to be able to play a match. Both online and offline matches can be played in the same campaign. Next to the existing Start Match and Start Ally Match buttons, there is now a Start Online Match button. Once clicked, the online menu will load, allowing the player to start a match in a variety of ways that will then be associated with the player's campaign. Play Tab Players can issue an open challenge to online opponents by using the Create Challenge button. Players can accept a challenge that was issued by an online opponent by clicking the Accept button on one of the open challenges. Players can use the Find Match button to have the system automatically find an opponent. Players can challenge an online AI by using the Challenge Bot button. Profile Tab Players can find their friends or specific opponents they wish to challenge by using the search bar and Challenge button. Players can also accept incoming direct challenges by going to their profile page, clicking the Challenges tab, and clicking the Accept button on one of the listed challenges. These challenges can also be accepted through the notifications panel. If there is an existing match that is already in progress that the player wants to be added to their campaign, they can simply click on the match in the player's Active Match list which will prompt the player to decide whether they would like that particular match to be added to the campaign. Online campaign matches do not need to use the default board size of the region in which they take place in. This leaves more options for players to accept opponent's challenges of any square board sizes. If a different board size is used, the region is automatically updated to reflect this. Online matches that are associated with a campaign will have a campaign icon next to them in the online menus. In the campaign menu to load an existing campaign, the card now includes an icon for whether the campaign has any completed online matches and what the most recent online rank of the player was. The campaign now has a button at th...Patch 0.27.3Oct 21, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsFixed the solution for one of the fortification puzzles which was causing the player to not be able to move on to new puzzles once all other puzzles in the group were solved.Patch 0.27.2Oct 18, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsThe graphics for the stones used in the traditional and traditional dark themes have been improved to look better on very small board sizes and very high resolutions.Patch 0.27.1Sep 13, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsFixed an issue with loading campaign mode fortification puzzles after a certain problematic puzzle was attempted to be loaded. Fixed an issue with loading a tutorial which asks for player input on the first node. It was previously marking the options of where to play next on the board, which was not intended when asking the player to decide where to play. Update 0.27.0 - Online Mode ImprovementsAug 23, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsNew Features An indicator and button has been added to the online mode which shows how many matches are currently waiting for your turn. Once clicked, it will load and cycle through the active games, allowing the player to make their move in each of them. This is especially useful for players with multiple ongoing correspondence games. Once all active turns have been played, the button will cycle through the other games the player is in which are waiting for the opponent's move. This button and indicator can be found within the top right of the online menu as well as the top right of the Go board screen while playing an online match. The indicator will be displayed on the online menu of the main menu if there is at least one active game. The indicator will be displayed within the Go board screen if there is at least one active game other than the one that is currently being played. Players can now choose to hide online ranking information, allowing them to focus more on playing Go and less about the rank of their opponents or rank changes from matches. This will hide ranks while in the online menu, such as match history, as well as hide ranks while playing matches. The setting can be found under Settings > Board Settings > Hide Online Ranks. Updates When using the Find Match/Automatch functionality of the online mode, players can now continue to browse the open challenges while their live or blitz automatch request is currently active, instead of staying on a waiting screen like before. The automatch request will be automatically cancelled for live or blitz if the player finds a match through other means or browses away from the Play tab. The way that The Conquest of Go connects and communicates with the Online Go Server has been reworked. This update is mostly behind the scenes and should primarily go unnoticed, but if there are issues occurring during online play after this update, please file a bug report here. The logout button for the online menu has been removed when accessing the online menu through the Go board screen. Logging out of the online menu will now only be handled in the main menu. Fixes Fixed an issue with loading the online mode having the possibility of causing a rare crash if taken too long. Fixed an issue with creating an online challenge or find match request not properly setting the rules when using New Zealand or Ing SST rules. Fixed an issue which was causing the online mode play tab buttons to become unresponsive when using the challenge button and loading the waiting for challenge screen. Fixed an issue where match preferences were not being saved properly to be reused later when using the online mode Find Match functionality. Fixed an issue where old historical online matches that don't have a name were unable to be clicked. Fixed an issue with the online game chat user list which was being populated with group chat users if the player accessed the online menu, loaded a group, clicked the chat tab and then closed the...Patch 0.26.2May 26, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsFixed an issue with the display of the SGF markup "X" on example diagrams that are used in the glossary and tooltips in the move history panel. Removed the sign out button from the online menu when accessed from the Go board screen. Patch 0.26.1May 11, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsFixed an issue loading the online friend's list for players with many friends. Fixed the UI scaling of the friends list for large UI scale values in graphics settings. Fixed an issue with not being able to switch to different board sizes when starting a rematch in quick play. Update 0.26.0 - Analysis Improvements, UI Scaling & Quality of Life ImprovementsMar 15, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsNew Features Analysis Improvements When using AI analysis, the AI's top move recommendation will be immediately displayed once generated instead of waiting for the move's number of visits to cross the minimum visits threshold found in AI settings. This will give a more responsive experience for the player, especially on older or less powerful hardware. Next Move Display If reviewing a previous match and the next played move is returned from the AI analysis, it will also be displayed before it crosses the minimum visits threshold. The recommendation for the next played move will be displayed in a blue color, similar to the existing blue outline. Once the main search for the AI's recommendation is finished by reaching the maximum visits threshold found in AI settings, a second evaluation will be run specifically on the move that was played next to bring its visits and evaluation to a similar level for comparison across the other recommendations. During the second evaluation, the move will be ranked by comparing its win rate to other recommended moves, and if the win rate range is too small, score change will instead be used. Recommendations that are not the top ranked move or the next played move will still wait to be displayed until they cross the minimum visits threshold. The minimum visits threshold has been updated to be inclusive. A setting of 1 will display any move that has a visit count of 1 or higher instead of only higher than 1. If players wish to have this setting behave as it was before, just increase the setting's value by 1. UI Scale The game features a new setting found in Settings > Graphics Settings to control the scale of the user interface, such as the size of text, buttons, panels, etc. that are displayed on screen. This setting greatly improves legibility on smaller physical screen sizes such as the Steam Deck. The setting goes from a value of 1 to 6, with 6 being the largest. The default value is 2, which will display the UI as it was in previous versions. Players on the Steam Deck will default to a UI scale value of 5 for improved legibility. To make more space in some of the panels where space is limited on larger UI scales, some of more decorative UI elements will be disabled. This should be the final step needed to receive the Steam Deck verified badge once Valve's verification process is completed. The resume play from review functionality added in version 0.25.0 has been extended to allow players to also resume play against the AI from any point while using the practice board (Quick Play > Practice) and opening guides (Learning Center > Opening Guides). The match details panel for creating a match now has a button to swap the player details (player type, AI, level, name, and rank) between the players playing as black and white. The campaign map now has a button at the top right to view the campaign tutorial instead of only being able to access it from the main menu. Once completed, the player is returned back to their c...Patch 0.25.2Dec 24, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsFixed an issue which was causing resource values and costs to be displayed for campaign abilities when resuming play from legendary record reviews.Patch 0.25.1Dec 21, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsFixed an issue with the score and win rates graphs being displayed for automated online reviews which were not able to properly display the graphs from the perspective of the white stone player. Fixed an issue with online reviews where recommended moves would persist after loading a different match from the match history that didn't have a completed automated review. Update 0.25.0 - Resume Play from Reviews & New MusicDec 19, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsNew Features Resuming Play from Reviews and SGFs Players can now start a match against the AI from any point while reviewing a match by clicking the "Resume Play" button. This applies to reviewing normal matches and legendary records in the campaign mode, reviewing saved quick play matches, reviewing online matches, reviewing imported SGFs, and reviewing matches that you've subscribed to in Steam Workshop. Campaign Integration In the campaign, resuming from review will start a match against the same AI opponent and will use the time controls which are specified in the campaign settings. Since the result of the resumed match does not affect the ownership of the region where the match took place, campaign abilities are able to be used without consuming resources. When the player completes a match that was resumed from a review, the player will earn empire resources, and if the result was a win, the player will also raise the fortification level of their regions of the map. The amount of resources and fortification levels are determined in part by how many moves were played after resuming (+), whether campaign abilities were used (-), and whether the match was resumed from an existing move (+) or a move that was added during review (-). Resumed records are displayed as subrecords of the original match within the Battle History panel of the map, and can be accessed by first clicking the original match. Matches that contain subrecords have a small mark in the bottom right corner. Similar to normal matches, resumed matches are also saved automatically as matches in progress which can be later finished if the player navigates away, such as returning to the map, main menu, or exiting the game. Automated reviews are also run on resumed matches, however the review will only evaluate the new moves that took place after resumption. Matches resumed from review in non-campaign modes such as saved matches or online matches will prompt the user to select which AI they would like to play against and select other settings such as komi and time control. In addition to starting from a point in the existing match, players can add their own moves and branches during review and choose to start the match from a different branch. Music Improvements New themes have been added which are played in the campaign mode upon match completion based on whether the match was won or lost. There are three possible upbeat themes when the match is won, and three possible somber themes when the match is lost. A new theme has been added to the Go board scene. A new theme has been added to the campaign map scene. New theme names have been added to the credits list which can be found in the extras menu. Improvements have been made to how the different themes are selected and ordered when played. Previously, the list of possible songs would be randomly ordered each time a new scene in the game is loaded, which meant it was possible for a theme to be played more than once before other themes...Patch 0.24.2Oct 19, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsFixed an issue in the campaign tutorial which was previously unintentionally displaying review type confirmation when starting the first match.Patch 0.24.1Oct 13, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsFixed an issue with starting a new campaign with the difficulty level set to "Custom" which was not saving the custom settings properly. Fixed an issue which was causing the AIs to interfere with each other when playing an ally battle against the new Casual AI. Update 0.24.0 - New Casual AI & Small Screen ImprovementsOct 12, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsNew Features New Casual AI A new AI opponent has been added which is aimed at beginner and novice players and has a strength level which is weaker than GNU Go. Like the other AIs, it has options for level 1 through 10. A new difficulty level called "Casual" has been added to both the campaign and quick play menus, which features the Casual AI as the opponent and is placed below the existing "Beginner" difficulty. Players primarily focused on training may still find benefit in learning from GNU Go's more competent moves during handicap matches, but the Casual AI may provide a more fun experience with less reliance on handicap stones to even the skill gap. Updates Improved text legibility of commonly used areas and functionality which was previously difficult to read on smaller screen sizes, such as the Steam Deck. Fixes Fixed a bug which was causing the Hybrid AI to not be able to play against itself in quick play, when both the black and white players were set to Hybrid AI. Update 0.23.0 - macOS Release & New Campaign SettingsSep 8, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsNew Features MacOS Release A macOS version of The Conquest of Go is now available, with all of the same functionality as the existing Windows version. For players playing on both Windows and macOS, the save files should sync properly through Steam Cloud, allowing you to pick up where you left off on either platform. The macOS version has been tested by multiple testers on a variety of hardware and versions of macOS, but if any issues are encountered, please create a topic on the discussion board where issues can be worked through. Thanks. New Campaign Settings Players now have the ability to disable automatic reviews which run after campaign matches for those who are not interested in the review results for every match. In this mode, players can still trigger an AI review by clicking the review button while viewing the match result on the campaign map, and then selecting Auto. Players now have the ability to hide campaign abilities (undo, find moves, find variations, show territory) while playing campaign matches for those who do not wish to have any AI assistance or undos. Both of the above settings are in the campaign settings panel which can be found by clicking the settings button on the right side of the campaign map. Similar to the other campaign settings, when creating a new campaign, it will use the same campaign settings as the most recently played campaign. Updates While this release focuses on bringing the game to a new platform, the underlying game engine needed to be updated in order to do this, which has the possibility of affecting existing functionality, even for players on Windows. Prior to release, issues have already been fixed as a result of this, but if anything else is discovered that is not as expected, please don't hesitate to create a topic on the discussion board to get resolved. The previous file dialog system used to import files into Saved Matches or to upload files to the Steam Workshop is no longer compatible with the latest release and a new file dialog system has been implemented to replace it. All actions in the new system take place within the game instead of using the operating system's file dialog. SGF download for ongoing online matches will now be disabled for matches on OGS that are set to "Disable Analysis". Players with the graphics quality setting set to low will no longer see the zoom animation on the campaign map when clicking on a region to load the result of a previous match. The zoom animation was tough for some older systems to handle which will now benefit from the low quality setting. Improved handling of online accounts that are banned on OGS. Further improved protection against save file corruption. Fixes The report function for reporting online players is now fixed to match recent updates that were made to OGS. The default file name generated for saved SGFs will no longer include player names if it would result in a very long file name causing issues with saving. Additionally, the name fields ...Patch 0.22.1Jul 20, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsFixed an issue where saving graphics settings was affecting other machine-specific settings such as AI settings, which weren't restored until the game was relaunched. Fixed an issue where the minimum wait time for an AI move was being unintentionally decreased for matches which have no time limit. Fixed an issue with the new feature activation tracking, where features that are disabled automatically at certain points were unintentionally being saved as the player's preference. Fixed a text issue in the campaign tutorial for all languages which referenced a button on the left side, which was actually on the right side. Update 0.22.0 - Steam Deck Support & Spanish LocalizationJun 22, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsNew Features Steam Deck Support An official Steam Deck controller profile has been added to take advantage of the many methods of input on the Steam Deck. This profile will be automatically loaded when playing The Conquest of Go on the Steam Deck, unless a different profile has already been selected. The default controls which are loaded for Steam Deck users are as follows. Users can modify the configuration or create their own configuration if desired. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37148807/2d66ac1021ce11385220f39d06d0f3b4e9719614.png In addition to the controls listed above, the touch screen of the Steam Deck also functions as a way to click on buttons and place stones. To learn more about Steam Input and how to configure controller settings, please visit the Steam page here. Controller Improvements Players using the Steam Deck or Steam Big Picture mode will have an on-screen keyboard automatically display when clicking on any of the input fields in the game that require text input. The game will now detect when a controller that is opted into Steam Input is connected or disconnected while playing the game, which allows the game to remap the playback controls appropriately depending on the input device. If a controller is present, the playback controls are mapped to their default settings, which the Steam Input profile will use to map a controller button to a playback control. The Steam Input configuration tool should be used to change the button mappings for each playback control, which can be done by modifying the official configuration or creating your own. If a controller is not present, the playback controls are mapped to the custom keyboard controls that can be found and changed within the in-game playback settings menu. This allows the controller configuration and keyboard configuration to be independent. Spanish Localization ¡The Conquest of Go está disponible ahora en español! If your PC's language settings are set to Spanish, the game should automatically display text within the game in Spanish, unless you've previously selected a specific language using the Settings > General Settings > Language selection drop down list. If you discover errors in the translation, please create a comment in this thread, or email [email protected]. Thank you. Feature Activation Indicators and Tracking The buttons at the top right of the Go board screen are used to activate various features and panels such as AI analysis, score graph, move history, and more. The buttons now have an indicator icon which will show if the feature is currently active (green) or if it is currently disabled (gray). The buttons have been slightly reordered so that the buttons which have an indicator are grouped together. Feature Tracking The state of the panels for move history, match information, move tree, match text, and online chat are now tracked so that when returning to the Go board screen, these panels will be automatically displayed or hidden based on your most recent pr...Patch 0.21.1May 11, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsFixed an issue which was causing the AI to get out of sync with what is displayed on the board in some cases when a match ended by passing, the game was resumed, and undos were used to work backwards through the match before playing new moves and continuing the match.Update 0.21.0 - Legendary Records, New Graph Features, & Resource UpdatesMay 7, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsNew Features Legendary Records The campaign mode will now feature a curated set of match records from notable players in Go's history, ranging from the 1600's to present day. The match records primarily feature important events in the player's careers such as international tournament wins. Legendary records can be viewed within the battle summary panel by clicking on a region that the player has conquered. Each region has 6 legendary records, for a total of 114 records to be collected across the map. Legendary records are unlocked by trading resources. If a campaign's settings are set to not use resources, the records are unlocked automatically. Players can step through and review unlocked legendary records similar to their own match records. New Win Rate and Score Graph Features The current analysis position will now be highlighted in blue on graphs to more easily see where the current position is within the graphs. Text in the header of the graph will output the current value, making it easier to see the exact value. For win rate, this will be displayed as a percentage. For score, it will be displayed as an estimated match score result, such as B+1.5 or W+0.28. While hovering over the graph, the closest point on the graph that matches the mouse cursor's x-axis value will be highlighted and the value will also be updated in the header, allowing a quick way to see the exact values within the graph. While hovering over the graph while reviewing a match record, left clicking the graph will move forward or backwards through the moves of the match to the point in the graph that was clicked. When trying out different moves while in review, or exploring moves in a separate branch, the graph will be updated with values matching the current branch, if they were previously calculated. Activating the graphs works the same as before, which is to click the graph buttons at the top right while on the Go board screen. The graphs can be used during match review or while in a quick play match. New Playback Settings A new setting has been added to the Playback Settings menu, which allows the player to specify whether the next move indicator (black or white circle on the next coordinate played) will be displayed on the board while reviewing matches and tutorials. This setting is on by default. A new settings has been added to the Playback Settings menu, which controls whether the final territory of a match will automatically be displayed on the board when reaching the final move while reviewing a match which ends by passing. When this setting is set to not display, a button will be available in the Match Results panel which will display the final territory when clicked, to achieve the same result. This settings is off by default. This is a change from previous versions of the game, where the default behavior was to display the territory automatically, however the process to determine territory can take some time, especially for lower-end systems, so it's best to l...Update 0.20.0 - Campaign Ally Matches & Steam Workshop ImprovementsFeb 21, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsNew Features Campaign Ally Matches In exchange for resources, the player can have an AI teammate (KataGo) assist with a match, where the player and teammate will alternate turns. The level of teammate can be chosen by the player, but the resource cost increases with each level. If the undo ability is used, the player will place the next stone regardless if the undone move was placed by the player or the AI teammate. Automated reviews for ally matches will only evaluate the player's moves and the AI teammates moves will be ignored. Records within the Battle Summary on the Campaign Map will also show which records have an AI teammate. The campaign tutorial has been updated to include information on ally matches. Steam Workshop Improvements Progress on completing workshop items is now tracked for items of Puzzle, Match, and Tutorial types. Progress on an item is considered complete when reaching the last move of the root path of a file, or if it is a puzzle item type and the file contains solution information, the item will be marked completed once the player has played the solution to the puzzle. When viewing workshop items, a check mark will be displayed at the top of the grid item if the item was previously completed. For workshop items that have progress that has been tracked, a "Reset Progress" button is available at the top of the grid of items to start progress from scratch once again. Puzzles that do not contain solution information (SGF properties Good for Black (GB) or Good for White (GW)) but contain only one path through the moves will now consider the path as the solution. This also enables the use of the "Show Correct Move" button while solving puzzles that fit this criteria. Puzzles with no way to determine solution information will be marked completed when reaching any ending move. There is a new setting found within General Settings to select whether puzzle preview images within Steam Workshop Items will be loaded or not. Turning off puzzle previews can improve performance while loading lists of puzzles on lower-end PCs. Please note that as content creators make changes to their workshop content which are pushed out to subscribers, such as renaming files, folders, or changing file locations, this will reset the tracking information for those particular files. Move Testing Improvements For game modes which restrict the player to certain moves, there is a new toggle called "Allow All Moves" which will allow players to play any move and test out their own move sequences. This is available while solving puzzles (campaign fortification puzzles and Steam workshop puzzles) as well as the Opening Explorer and joseki type content within the Steam workshop. Grid List Improvements Lists of grid items such as the Saved Matches grid or Steam workshop files will now have paging, where a maximum of 50 grid items will be displayed, and other items can be accessed by using the page controls to load the next or previous 50 items. Grids will now list ...
