This month brings fantastic updates (as with every month, of course). Firstly, we must inform you that the speed of TCWE2 development was temporarily reduced last month. We had to utilize all our physical and intellectual capacities to complete and polish another project for Steam Fest, which is taking place this month. But fear not, it doesn't mean we haven't made any progress on The Cold War Era 2. In fact, we have reached a significant milestone! This unit has been created using the unit crafting feature and is ready for production. You can take as much as you need but less you have in your budget - worse your country developing level. So, you must limit your self at some point and keep the right balance. 2- Once you develop a research you can name models and its versions. For example, instead of Abram M1 we can name it - Unicorn G-Y 3- When you research a model you can upgrade it. There you can see what new setting of the model will be after the upgrade. Once you upgrade it you will have two models available for crafting, one is Unicorn G-Y and another Unicorn G-Y2 . Different models can be used for different battlefield strategies. Battle tactics always depend on landscape and size of a country or combat operational area. All these specifics should be considered during battle tactics. Each phase of war is different and unique for all countries in the game. It has different geographical landscape and size. Each landscape has bonuses and penalties for different units. We will speak about it in the next diary. Today we are going to discuss the size. Because it does matter! The size in the game has special term and it is DISTANCE. Battle field ( or battle front ) is divided on 12 vertical lines. Units move back and forward on the battle field between the lines. And regions have different geographical size. Each region battle field has its DISTANCE according to how geographically big or small this region. This value is for DISTANCE. ENGINE value accumulates with every game turn until it reached value of DISTANCE. Canada DISTANCE is 100. ENGINE of F86 is 5. It means, this jet will be able to cross one battle field line of Ireland in 2 game turns ( 10/5=2) and Canada in 20 turns ( 100/5=20 ). Speed of movement can be crucial under different circumstances. You may want to have powerful engines for your units if you want them to be fast on battle fields. MANEUVER is the ability of a unit to do manoeuvres. Obviously saying. Units do strategic or tactical MANEUVER before they fire its weapon. MANEUVER has to be done for the best angle of attack. As more MANEUVER units as faster it can destroy the enemy. And there is only one thing that can help you to defend yourself from high MANEUVER units. And it is COUNTERMEASURES. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/a4c5f3b1187018f1d2a36482bcd873963c054fcd.jpg COUNTERMEASURES is a combination of electronic and technical devices and general unit design (ability to do different manoeuvres). Destroyers can do circle manoeuvres at high speed to escape from torpedoes and planes can drop flares or do fast manoeuvres to avoid missiles. All this is COUNTERMEASURES. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/d7e56a578d89a49cac03fce1ec4c495ba29be26d.jpg There will be a fight of MANEUVER vs COUNTERMEASURES in TCWE2. Currently we have not tested this game feature in the game yet and I’m not ready to say what will be the final calculation formula. But for sure a unit can hit another unit only if the value of MANEUVER is higher then COUNTERMEASURES. Unit can’t hit a target within the RANGE of WEAPON or if it doesn’t see other units in the range of RADAR visibility distance. But there are two more very important options you need to consider during unit crafting. One of them is STEALTH. This is unique value of any BODY equipment. STEALTH is the shape of unit BODY, materials involved to produce it and ability to camouflage on the battle ground. STEALTH reduces visibility of unit for enemy radars by its value. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/52ed8a1c7e44a1487f3e024cf809b5d9b39fefd0.jpg For example, enemy unit RADAR value is 3 and your unit STEALTH is 1. 3 -1 = 2. It means, your unit will be visible for enemy RADAR only in the range of 2 battle lines and not 3. As higher STEALTH value of your units as closer you can get to enemy units without being spotted. At the same time units with more advanced RADARs can easily see other units with low STEALTH level. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/d7e56a578d89a49cac03fce1ec4c495ba29be26d.jpg Another option to consider on the battle field is COUNTERMEASURES. The value of HIT POINT deducts from ARMOR when WEAPON fires. If ARMOR is 0 or below for any unit it destroys. And how far our WEAPON can fire? There is distance of combat fire in the game. And each WEAPON has it own fire RANGE. But before we continue let's speak how our unit can actually "see" targets. Each unit has RADAR. One value of RADAR is equal to one vertical line in the battle field. MIG15 has RADAR with value 2 and it can see all air, land and naval units 2 lines from the current position. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/1468200c8165c91e79ed8b8d9267bd2bd683139a.jpg If enemy unit is in the range of RADAR and WEAPON it can be attacked. If enemy unit can be seen by RADAR but out of WEAPON range it can not be attacked. Same if enemy unit is in the range of WEAPON but not RADAR. F86 has ground WEAPON with RANGE 1 and RADAR with RANGE 2. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/48432d13f5cecfda2f5f3edf2250457ddab6c05a.jpg It means our F86 unit can see enemy T34 Tank but can not hit it with its bombs from the current position. F86 should move one line closer to T34 to have a good kill. As I mentioned in previous diaries you will be able to craft units with four main equipment ( it can be more then four if body load capacity allows to install or mount more equipment ). In the previous diary we learned what is load and supply for body equipment. Let's discuss other two combat specifics of the body. The first one is ARMOR. This is strength of your unit. When enemy units fire our unit it damages armor. F 86 body armor is 2 on the picture below. 2 is very low. If our unit receives damage equal 2 or more our unit will be destroyed. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/52ed8a1c7e44a1487f3e024cf809b5d9b39fefd0.jpg Damage can be received only by special weapon. In very early Cold War time machineguns were basic weapon on jets. Machineguns was general firepower in legendary dogfights between F86 and Mig15 in the skies of Korea. WEAPON fires one time per turn. If Mig15 machinegun hit point is 2 or more it can destroy our unit with the first fire. And if machinegun is not mounted on our unit we can't fire back. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/3d23b835a26d74d450d8908ff2042e986dc31391.jpg Upgrades for equipment are available in the game. It takes time and funds for upgrades. For example we can upgrade our ARMOR from 2 to 3 for our F 86 BODY. But it will not automatically upgrades already produced weapon. You need to create new model with upgraded body and produce new units with it. Each upgrade increases equipment cost by 50%. At the same time, you can upgrade ( minimize ) the cost of equipment as well. As I have mentioned before each unit model consists of equipment. You must have not less then one of each equipment to be able to craft your model. Every equipment has its own research price, production price, load and two specifics which are crucial on the battle field. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/00d63ca2a4910d093918e5b891a529ed88999094.jpg Research price is the amount of funds you have to pay to research this equipment. Price is the amount of funds to be paid to produce this equipment. Load is the sum of space and weight this equipment takes inside of BODY. So, BODY is the only equipment which is a little bit different from other equipment because BODY provides with the load capacity and another equipment takes capacity from it. Let’s take a look on the picture below. F 86 BODY equipment provides this model with 700 load. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/52ed8a1c7e44a1487f3e024cf809b5d9b39fefd0.jpg It means we have 700 load capacity to be load into this BODY. All empty space which leaves after we mount and install other equipment to this BODY will be taken for supplies. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/3b65c04ad41ad01a5680f8013eb3befcc990d6c6.jpg Supplies are required to operate on the battle field. You need to have supplies to move your unit and to fire weapon. It takes 50 supplies to fire weapon once per turn. If there are two or more different weapon installed on your unit it takes 50 supplies to fire each. For example, if you have torpedo and missiles installed on your submarine you need to have 100 supplies to fire both at the same turn. And it takes one turn to fully resupply your unit. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/baf7517a8292d46bf5f376207d8ac64f115503bc.jpg It will be up to you to find your perfect balance for battle field tactics. You can have various weapon on your unit but very limited on supplies for fire sequence or craft simple unit with more supplies to have longer fire sequence. There are five war phases in the game. Each phase ( and its geography) is specific. For example, there is naval invasion phase and win on sea requires to pass the phase. Another phase is ground battle field and it requires strong ground forces to win on the land. The last phase is city combat and naval vessels and ground vehicles can’t win there. We will talk about war phases and it’s specifics later in diaries. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/de86635d50340beb31058320e07187676ff8163e.jpg So, when you craft your battle units you need to consider why do you actually craft it for. Battle strategy is involved for it. For example, your destroyer will be great addition to cruisers if it has anti submarine warfare equipment and cruisers don’t. But this destroyer will be useless as anti ground or anti ships support. Long range missile would help but this equipment may not fit in small destroyer body. You may want to use one destroyer body but craft two different models with different armament for different war phases. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/0d41b29c710b539ef10163804b1138e5e89ca7f9.jpg To make complex things simpler we divided battle field on 12 x 3 lines. Horizontal lines are for air, ground and naval units and vertical is battle field distance ( which is different to geographic locations ). Each weapon has it’s range which is equal to one vertical line. Next week I will start to talk in details about unit equipment and how it is used on the battle field. Specially compare to big and famous titles? Well, we are proud to declare we do have something really special! And it is unit craft. Not just upgrades but actual customization. Let’s look briefly on units in TCWE2 generally to understand how it works. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/a4612540e69f5d0b646ace1c1932c47ebfb6ad71.jpg There are three main components in unit production – blue prints, a model and actual unit. Unit customization is situated right between blue prints and a model. You will need to research blue prints and customize your unit model based on them. When model is ready you can start production of it. You have to spend funds of science to research blue prints and private/nationalized sectors to produce units. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37120063/81bdc564d1d8319c7d23be281a298647ead7ac10.jpg Unlike in many other strategy games you do not research blue prints of an actual unit in TCWE2. You research different components. Components are required to combine it together to have your model. There are four main components – body, weapon, electronics and reliability. Each component provide to your model specific setting ( we will discuss it in more details in next diaries ). Body – is actual look of unit model. The size of the body is very important for the load capacity. It is done with the idea to avoid extra micromanagement and make game more focused on politics and military actions. Civilian production is included in GDP and doesn’t have separate finance sector as military. Taking funds from GDP for military reduces Civilian production and national income. Players can take funds from GDP to manage production withing the limit. When production is done funds go back to GDP. For example, if you take 150 from private sector you will be able to produce military units on the particular fund amount. If the limit is 150 and you placed your orders for 500 the first 150 starts to build. When the first military production in the line finishes other starts to produce. Let’s call it - order spending limit. This limit relates to your technological production line level. Order spending limit is how much you can spend on the particular order. We are taking 150 from private sector. We place an order for 320 jets. Our max order spending limit is 20. It means we can take only 20 from 100 to build our order for jets. Another 80 from 100 goes to other orders in the line. The Soviet Union based on planned economy and USA believes in energy of capitalism in private sector. It decreases general GDP. As more you produce = less GDP = less income for national finance fund. The idea is simple – collect to invest for bigger income in the future or spend to produce now. It has its own pros and cons. Planned economy is cost efficient. Government controls this economic sector and it is oriented on getting the final production as soon as it’s ordered. You want it – you get it. Private production chains involve private small, medium and large businesses and sub contractors. Every business works for profit which makes the final product expensive compare to nationalized production. If you would order production in nationalized sector it cost you, let’s say 50. The same production and amount in private sector will cost you 100. The good side of private sector it grows by it self without direct government control. And nationalized sector doesn’t grow without direct government investments from nationalized finance fund. More you order in private sector it grows faster and businesses becomes richer. In TCWE2 the political life of regions much more various. Each region has ideological influence, leader with its own ideological vision, parliament with three main political orientation, radicals and level of development. Those are main keys which can stabilize region or vise versa, used it to change political system. We will speak in details about every group later in diaries. Today I’d like to explain the general idea why all this is in the game. There may be a situation when leader who has won election has different ideological vision compare to what his or her region has currently in power. Laws are oriented on economic and political life of region. Some laws can change political system under different circumstances.
