Most likely due to the lack of content. This isn't expected to change for quite a while, and finding teasers that don't spoil the story gets increasingly challenging as the story nears certain end points. To adjust for this, there won't be regular announcements on the first day of the month going forward. This may change later, but for the time being they're unsustainable, and would become increasingly hollow. For the foreseeable future, content and information will be accumulated, and announcements will be done when there is something substantial to share. The quality of these updates are being balanced against a degree of restlessness likely to cultivate in the absence of regular posts. Just know, that unless difficulties are expressed, everything marches along at the fastest sustainable pace possible. Author's Remarks Still going steady and all is well. Okay. Thanks. Bye. There were a few weeks taken to get everything migrated to a patch and fully tested. Some things were not as stable as originally thought, and certain features had to be postponed. Chapter Selection The main feature that didn't pass testing in the eleventh hour was a basic chapter select option. Many anticipated problems for players occurred as a result of its absence, and it remains one of the next priorities. It will likely see a few more iterations before release, and will be a hard requirement before next episode. Now that release support is winding down, work on this can begin again. Improved Save Data Adjacent to this, there are a lot of issues with the way save data works. The underlying issues here also need to be solved as part of chapter selection. The improved layout is expected to make save games less prone to certain types of corruption. Not everything, but it will likely avoid a fair number of common issues. The added metadata will also open up what can be provided in the UI, and include more information about the save itself. Puzzles A strong discussion consensus, and numerous issue reports, express that many of the puzzles in specific areas were more of a drag on the story, rather than an intermission. More hints were added, and removal of red herrings were done to alleviate some friction, as this wasn't the intended experience. Author's Remarks There is not enough spoiler free content yet that is fully rendered, and can be presented as teaser material this month. Words of Gratitude Big thank you to everyone who reported issues. Your efforts have contributed a lot to the stability of the newest episode. There were also requests for quality of life improvements which are being taken into consideration. Hope you enjoyed Decay part 1/2! UpdateApr 1, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsGeneral Maximum saves increased to 50 slots. Cutscene coloration now matches the tint of the game scene. Fixed various typos, grammatical errors, and confusing wording. Episode 1 Gave dead-end a title and cutscene art. Andrew is no longer hyperbolic about the news. Added more optional dialogue when inspecting the apartment. Episode 2 Added additional prompts to save progress. Added NPCs with minor dialogue to the town area. Added more hints when wandering around the new house. Added full character art for the shopkeeper and cultists. Added more cutscene art to emphasize a key line of dialogue. Improved Tar Soul-To-be design (No longer just a color swap). The paintings puzzle tutorial now requires both items to proceed. More emphasis added to the symbolism for the final paintings puzzle. Changed some text for key choices to imply how the characters will respond. Episode 3 Released Episode 3: Decay (part 1/2). Translation Tool The newest version of the translation tool has been included in this patch, as it has features to update existing translation files. See the Translation Tool thread for more information. Possible Save Game Issues The current save game files may or may not work, as they might contain things removed from the game, or lack things recently added. Generally files closest to the start or end of an episode will be the least likely to be corrupt. Minor issues can sometimes be solved by moving in and out of the room the game was saved in. While efforts have been made to preserve save games as best as possible, some breakage scenarios are unavoidable when making major content changes. It seems like many asking for a re-vote felt they didn't have enough information previously. This time I've done my best to really hammer home everything relevant. Information Recap Episode 3: Decay (part 1/2) is complete. It ends on a cliffhanger for Episode 4: Decay (part 2/2) which is not complete. Episode 3: Decay (part 1/2)'s quality will neither improve nor decrease regardless of it being released alone or with Episode 4: Decay (part 2/2). It cannot be rushed as it is already complete. It won't become better as it is already complete. E3: Decay (part 1/2): Is complete. Is roughly 6 hours long. Has 1 ending. Has 1 cliffhanger (Before episode 4). Has 4 dead-ends / fail states. E4: Decay (part 2/2): Is fully written. Is in development. Will be in development for a very long time. E3: Burial: Is fully written. Development has NOT started. Does NOT connect to, nor share any content with Decay. Here is an image of what the Decay branch looks like as of right now. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43894685/15678bcaaa1ce7cc478a0ac3dcb3d95f4e9bab71.png The Cliffhanger Neither Episode 1 nor 2 ended on a cliffhanger. While the overarching narrative remains unfinished, both episodes successfully concluded the part of the story they set out to tell. This is not the case with Episode 3: Decay (part 1/2) which cuts off abruptly. It is possible to play the game from start to finish if you go for a specific ending. Otherwise the story builds up and cuts off without a satisfying conclusion. All the pay off is in episode 4, which is still in development. Development Time I can't give an accurate estimate for how long Episode 4: Decay (part 2/2) is going to take. Adapting the story to game form isn't easily measured, and I'd rather not set myself up to fail by randomly guessing at it. Information that takes a couple lines of exposition to convey in writing, might take 2 minutes in-game, or it might take 20 minutes. This depends entirely on whether the game info dumps at you, or lets you roam around experiencing things for yourself. Latter means more gameplay, backgrounds, CGs, items, events, available actions, etc... basically more everything, and much more work. All I know is that it's going to be a while. It could easily be another year. "Author's Wishes" and Addressing Common Concerns It has come to light that some players had voted based on what they mistakenly believed I wanted. The only thing I wanted was to know if people would take issue with a cliffhanger. I had some hesitation about releasing the episode knowing how much people hate cliffhangers. Other than that, I do not have any strong feelings about it one way or the other, as it doesn't affect me. I'm not the one playing it. You are. The vote was, and still is, only about whether you can handle what might likely be an unsati...Questions & AnswersFeb 1, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsAuthor Comments All is well. Still making content without issues. Episode 4: Decay (part 2/2) is coming along nicely. Last time you were given the option to leave questions about the game and story so far. Some have been combined, and others reworded for more concise answers. If you're not interested in the Q&A, skip to the end, there's something I want to ask you. Q&A Author Responses Q: How does one pronounce Leyley? A: Lay-lay. "Lay" as in "Lay down." Q: Merch when?? A: We're in discussions regarding contracts and licensing and logistics and other legal hoopla that needs to be dealt with. It'll be a while but it'll happen. Q: You mentioned the possible re-release of your old game jam novels. Which ones? When? A: Not even god knows. Thank you for all the interest. Q: What inspired The Coffin of Andy and Leyley? How did you come up with the story? A: This was one of the most asked questions. Luckily I've already answered it in detail here. Q: Is it okay to refer to you by your old screen name? A: Nemlei was a company name. It was acquired and discontinued. It's like calling me Coca-Cola, I don't feel any way about it. But still, thank you. Your concern warms my heart. I don't have any current usernames, so I just go by "author". Q: People have branded this as the "incest game" despite it having a lot more to it. How does it feel? A: Their loss. I'm glad not everyone has such a shallow, one-note interpretation, because this burning garbage heap is a symphony! Q: Do you think your audience is more male or female? A: The target demographic is women who enjoy true crime shows, gothic romance, and dark comedy. I've no idea who showed up though, and it doesn't matter. Everyone is welcome to give me money! Q: Explicit sex hentai porn NSFW scene when??????? A: Never. Q: What does Andrew study? A: Pedantry. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43894685/7921c17f8c8ef95d9fa735d406f245fc5b9cab43.png Q: What determines the color of someone's soul in the game? A: Great question! Find out in Decay. Q: Is Andrew lying about his nightmares? A: No, but he does exaggerate the frequency of them. Q: Did the Lady in 302 actually try to shoot Andrew? A: Yes. She lunged for the nailgun but didn't make it in time. Q: Does Ashley and/or Andrew have ? A: Shoehorning the characters into real-life diagnoses would only serve to diminish the narrative, and cause contradictions in the way their symptoms would or wouldn't manifest. Rather than seeing their behavior through the lens of this or that affliction, it's more fruitful to analyze the cause and effect of in-universe events. Q: Do you do anything with the batteries from episode 1? A: Yes. Q: Is The Coffin of Andy and Leyley related to any other games? Is there a shared universe your games take place in? A: No. Q: What inspired the character names? A: A google search for the most common names in the 90s. Q: Is Ashley disinterested in sex? A: Rather than disinterested, she doesn't want to grow up. Sex doesn't accommodate her fantasy of "And...Various ThingsJan 1, 2025 - Community Announcements{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43894685/0335e12cd7d7455feb4e79d1a4fab3edbe55ac2c.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43894685/f88e55aa132f781786214bd11773a90d2f021d9c.png Kit9 Update - Slight Price Increase There is a 30 day restriction on discounts following a rise in price, which creates some conflicts. A slight price increase was originally intended to be done alongside major releases, but we don't know far enough in advance with our next major release to plan around this window. It could create disruptions in our discount schedule or force a delay in release to avoid it. To side step the problem, it's been decided to do the next planned price increase far in advance and increase future discounts for the time being. The game is currently on sale for a few more days, and we will update the price when it concludes. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2378900/The_Coffin_of_Andy_and_Leyley/ Author's Inane Blabber Though it may not feel so, last year was my most productive year yet when it comes to developing this game. Oohlalaa! Look at all the nothing I have to show for it!! No matter. Here be some numbers. Episode 1: 90 CGs. One hour of content. Episode 2: 230 CGs. Two hours of content. Episode 3a: 580+ CGs. Six hours of content. This totals to nine hours of content with 900+ CGs. Please pretend to care. I have nothing else to tell you. Developing this game is a mighty uneventful affair on my end (in a good way). There's very little, if any, variation to the pipeline. Just setting up scenes, making art, setting up scenes, making art, setting up scenes, making art, setting up scenes, making art, setting up scenes, making art... Setting up scenes, making art, setting up scenes, making art....... It's fun, but nothing much to write about. Why do you think the devlog format stopped? There's nothing to report. For a few years before The Coffin of Andy and Leyley, I had been dabbling in making visual novels as a hobby by entering visual novel jams. These were month long jams with no specific goals other than to create a visual novel from start to finish. I entered maybe once a year for... uhhh?? four years? I don't remember, and you don't care. My point here is that it was enough so that I noticed a pattern... If a jam allowed additional gameplay in the visual novel, the entries utilizing it were often among the most played ones. "Huh." thought little ol' me, and schemed a wicked scheme. The next jam that came around (and I had time to enter) was Nanoreno, and time had come to test my hypothesis. I only had a month, so I knew from the start the story had to be a "bottle episode", as in the whole story must be contained within one location to save time, and limit how much art I needed to make. So who were the characters, why were they there, and why wouldn't they switch locations? The easiest answer was the classic "they're locked in and must escape" which is a story everyone and their dog has written at some point. Whatever, it's just a game jam I thought, and carried on. Then came the characters, at first Ashley was going to be a silent protagonist named Player (yeah, you read that right). I wanted to toy with the idea that players tend to do the most unhinged things when allowed. So there'd be the Player, and one support character whose sole purpose was to spout exposition, and react to the player doing player things. Oh, the humor that would ensue. There is one small remnant of this idea still in the game. It's at the very beginning when the player wakes Andrew up. He explains something, and "Player" responds with an emoji bubble thing, and Andrew then says "Quit your complaining!" despite the fact that Ashley hadn't really complained out loud. Now, imagine if the entire game was like this........... It would've sucked so bad. I dropped the concept pretty much right away. This original concept is also why the narrator addresses "you" (the Player), instead of being in pure third person or first person point of view. I did enjoy this game master type format though, so even after making Ashley an actual character, I kept it. Since Ashley was now a character, she needed to have a story. Cue the whole childhood incident (again, generic, but whatever it's a game jam). This also elevated Andrew to a character status, rather than a mere exposition spouter. Great! Now I knew who they were, and had a story to tell other than "unhinged room escape". (Which is a game I'd still want to play, as long as it isn't made by me.) {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43894685/13e55bcdcdb0291fee...October Poll ResultsNov 1, 2024 - Community Announcements{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43894685/9a5763a3b64c4f5366b8298c9c851190f3c3242e.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/43894685/6e96eb949833255142e5c67067ae8f3a926c5250.png Author - Poll Results Last month I asked if you'd prefer getting episode 3A (Decay part 1/2) straightaway, or later when episode 4 (Decay part 2/2) is ready. In our monthly meeting with the author, some decisions have been made about trying a different approach to our posting format. We will be moving away from focusing on progress reporting. Posts will now be some variation or mix of things such as teaser content, major announcements, surveys, responses, and sometimes author commentary, if time permits. This added flexibility will help with what to publish at month's end, as there isn't always enough interesting information to report in specific areas of work. This will be the last "Progress Report", and titles will vary with the content provided. We'll conclude this old format with some entries in the new format. This month, the author's account of the episode work, and a survey regarding release options. The dividing point of the episodes is resolved, but a delivery dilemma still remains. Author - Recap and Survey Previously on Progress Report... Episode 3A far exceeds the estimated playtime (6 hours and counting). Episode 3A is split in two to alleviate the discrepancy between episode sizes, creating Episode 4. Episode 3A and 4 are still meant to be shipped together to provide a conclusive narrative experience. Team considers releasing 3A alone to keep the game alive. Author refuses, as Episode 3A ends on a cliffhanger no matter where it's cut. Author flip-flops between releasing 3A alone, versus forcing everyone to wait until the entirety of the branch is complete.
