The Bottom of the Well

New Steam Developer's Page, updates to Beta branch.Jul 31, 2018 - Community Announcementshttps://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/12154838/1d6448a679b0ae6b5ecbde5f9d8f5e3c4f118631.png Playing through the game will now see Alice's desktop come a little more alive. Chat logs, unlockable pictures, maybe even a secret or two? More is still to come, but this should work as a preview! https://steamcommunity.com/groups/rednettle We've also set up a Steam developer group for Red Nettle Studio, where you'll be able to follow any and all new developments. I'm not 100% sure yet what they'll be used for, but they definitely look cool. So come on over and join us there too, if you want. As always, please post any bugs and other comments on the beta version in the forum: Beta Bug Reports & Comments[beta] A working desktop (and new chat)Jul 5, 2018 - Community Announcementshttps://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/12154838/2be44a778f1229aff620820b94bdd1f59673a88b.png Remember that desktop we see briefly in the beginning of the game, during the intro? What if that desktop was fully functional, with windows that can be opened, mp3-players that you can pick a song on, and notes that persist from playthrough to playthrough? Well...now you can! https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/12154838/f05ca98beb82db34ad30d2d1d6ccadc726eac536.png The main purpose of the desktop though is to open up a new avenue of storytelling: right now there's not much there (but you might find a secret or two if you poke around already now), but the plan is to expand and improve on the desktop, adding new story hooks and reactions as Alice's 'career' advances. https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/12154838/de7122caaa4487ae5a0370b72ce9da2d05490357.png It will also open up new ways of interacting with the game after the end, although for now the endings remain the same. But that will be one of the next steps we'll take. FUTURE PLANS: * Add more story through the desktop: Alice's notes, chat logs, unlockable images etc. This will evolve as Alice does through her many iterations of the story. * Rework the ending of the game, specifically the "box open" ending. * Something else? Any thoughts? Official Bug Reports/Feedback ThreadSkill Checks!Jun 7, 2018 - Community Announcementshttps://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/12154838/48743b67bef3580a858436f37c3ab5e47656b4c9.png Work continues on skill checks, and showing them visually: Gif! The same works for items. This should hopefully reduce the sense of not knowing why you failed/died, as it'll (hopefully) tell you directly what skills are checked and fail. It's not entirely perfect, and sometimes you just make bad decisions, but hopefully it'll help a bit! Soon available in the beta branch ;) Edit: Available now. Test away! Official Bug Reports/Feedback ThreadCheckpoints in Beta (beta-testers needed!)May 17, 2018 - Community Announcementshttps://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/12154838/bdce1bebc251d17f0608255cf61465f87e5d46dc.png Has it really been two years? Time flies! One of the most-asked-for features for The Bottom of the Well has been to implement some way to save your progress, rather than having to start over from the very beginning every time. I was afraid it would be an insurmountable hurdle due to the way the game was designed, but it seems nothing is impossible. Although I can't be entirely sure it's actually working for everyone, so it'd be grand to get some testers. So, if you want to help, please try out our new checkpoint system in the Bottom of the Well Beta! To access the Beta, simply write in the super-secret code in the Preferences/Beta section of the game: keypadcodeis**** Where **** is a certain 4-digit number code that any old player of The Bottom of the Well will know and never un-know ;) NOTA BENE: This update will remove the "Profiles" system entirely, so there will always only be ONE profile. It turned out to be too complex to make checkpoints work separately for each profile, and either way no-one really used it for anything! Other changes include: - Maybe fixed the elusive "I Live, I die, I live again"-achievement bug - Minor typo and formatting fixes here and there. - Some minor UI updates (+pretty new splash screen) - A brand new piece of music by Jussi Elsilä (you'll hear it towards the very end of the game) Future plans include: - Adding to and improving the ending. - UI overhaul. - Visual cues for when skills are checked and used. Official Feedback/Bug report ThreadUpdate 1.5.1 (unlock resolutions)May 16, 2016 - Community AnnouncementsHey all, By popular request, I've now pushed a small small update that unlocks the resolution options in the launch screen for people with non-standard resolutions. You can now also launch it in Windowed mode, and freely resize the window: hopefully this will at least allow everyone a chance to make sure all of the bits and bobs of the game are visible at the same time. Note that playing at other resolutions than the 'default' (1920x1080, at a 10:9 aspect ratio) might lead to various visual ugliness, such as the chat windows overlapping, font sizes between menu and dialog changing etc. However, the UI -has- been made to work with varying resolutions, and I tested it in Windowed mode, and you can stretch it quite a bit before it becomes unreadable. If you experience any trouble with this update, please post in the Official Bug Reports Thread. Much obliged! Other fixes to the 1.5.1 version include some typo fixes + you can now only actually break into Ches's apartment if you have a crowbar ;)Update 1.5.1 (unlock resolutions)May 16, 2016 - Community AnnouncementsHey all, By popular request, I've now pushed a small small update that unlocks the resolution options in the launch screen for people with non-standard resolutions. After much wrangling, I think we've finally managed to make the soundtrack as well as a bonus pack of artwork from the game compiled by our artist available as DLC download on Steam; free of charge, of course. You should find these in the list of DLCs under the game. Or then it might already automatically have downloaded itself to your computer! In either case, the soundtrack and the artwork will exist in your game folder under the folders 'soundtrack' and 'wallpapers' respectively. Enjoy! At the same time we're pushing a small update 1.15 which fixes some issues reported in the forums: Changelog (1.15) - A slight problem with time (jumping from July to September): now it's all September. - An issue with Ches magically reappearing later in the narrative even though he shouldn't. - An issue where Alice ran out of things to say to the thugs on the bridge. - (Hopefully) an issue where Alice either eats too little or too much food, and time doesn't pass correctly either, when waiting in the buroughs. There have been some reports of graphical and audio glitches, but I haven't been able to track down the causes of them, unfortunately :( The more people report problems though, the easier it is to fix! Thank you!Patch now -actually- live (1.14)Mar 27, 2016 - Community AnnouncementsHey all, So apparently the patch a few weeks back (1.14) did not actually get pushed properly, and a lot of people seem to have been unable to download it. We've now rectified this, so hopefully everyone's games have been updated now. You can check by going into the help/About section in the main menu and checking the version number after the title of the game. Note that the loading time for the game (when starting) is now several seconds longer - this is not a bug. Apologies, and enjoy the new version. :)Patch now -actually- live (1.14)Mar 27, 2016 - Community AnnouncementsHey all, So apparently the patch a few weeks back (1.14) did not actually get pushed properly, and a lot of people seem to have been unable to download it. The Bottom of the Well Soundtrack (Jussi Elsilä)2-week update: bug fixes!Mar 17, 2016 - Community AnnouncementsATTENTION Quick edit: A few oopsies were found right after uploading, and then fixed, and then a new build was reuploaded. Apologies to those of you who managed to download it in the meantime! We released the first proper patch for The Bottom of the Well today (once this post is posted). Hopefully everything will work out all right, but please let us know immediately in the Official Bug Reporting Thread if the new version is causing any trouble! Fixes: - Hopefully fixed the main-menu stall bug (from clicking 'new game' too fast after loading) - Fixed items not moving/moving too slowly when put into the inventory - Hopefully fixed the map getting stuck sometimes when clicking on it (difficult to replicate, but I think I figured it out) - Fixed the hitboxes on some buttons, so they should be easier to target now (including the skip button) - Fixed the main menu descriptions fading too fast + the text not fitting in the box. - Fixed at least a few instances of food/health indicators not updating, but could not replicate in all reported cases :-( - The sky animation stops moving after 2 minutes. Fixed. - Fixed a few narrative missteps and some typos here and there. Additions/changes: - There is now a mute button on the main menu as well, so you do not have to wait until inside the game if you want to mute the volume. - Dating 1 is now no longer as useless: it gives you access to the Spare Clothes item (2 dating was needed for it as per the other items). What was not done but often requested: - A text log/ability to go back and see previous dialog. I am very much interested in getting this in the game, but it will take some more work. - A save function (beyond saving playthroughs): the way the game is currently set up a checkpoint/save function is very difficult to achieve, but if I can come up with a clever way of doing one I will make the attempt in the future. Thank you to everyone for your feedback and your reviews/comments/love. Enjoy the (slightly improved) version of The Bottom of the Well! 2-week update: bug fixes!Mar 17, 2016 - Community AnnouncementsATTENTION Quick edit: A few oopsies were found right after uploading, and then fixed, and then a new build was reuploaded.
