If your Steam Deck goes to sleep while playing, you may have trouble reconnecting to the game after it wakes up again. For now, we recommend you disable auto-sleep on your Steam Deck while playing Sunderfolk. We are working on a fix for a future release, so stay tuned! Enjoy your wandering adventures in Arden and beyond! Choose Your Character The playable characters of Sunderfolk have many titles, but they all share the same mission—to protect the townsfolk of Arden. There are six different characters to choose from, all with their own unique playstyle that fills a vital role within a party. The Arcanist - Master the intricacies of the arcane! The Bard - Inspire and deceive with MUSIC! The Berserker - Channel your Rage and demolish foes! The Pyromancer - Engulf everything in red-hot flames! The Ranger - Hunt your opponent from a distance! The Rogue - Devastate prey with devious attacks! Tip: Need a thorough guide on all of the heroes before making your decision? Combat in Sunderfolk Sunderfolk utilizes party turn-based, strategy combat separated into Rounds. Each Round of combat encompasses: Character Turn - You and your party members take their turns Monster Turn - Your foes take their actions Ally Turn - If you have NPC allies, they’ll act here There are no turn orders for your and your party, allowing for flexibility in your strategies! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/db8c3b7165c5a29db0ac4ded319ffe9d2f0317b1.jpg Though we do recommend making sure the Berserker takes all the damage. We’ve Put a Hex On You(r grid) As you may have noticed above, Sunderfolk utilizes a hexagonal grid for the battlefield! This opens up a lot of possibilities, namely for the term “adjacent”! You’ll see that a lot in your character Skill Cards! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/07b474f5fc9215a048c5dc82414e885493a192d1.jpg Drop YOUR favorite grid-shape system in the comments below! An enemy (or ally) can be adjacent to you as long as the hex tile that they are on is touching your hex tile! These tiles can also have environmental hazards (sometimes caused by party members), and some are baked into the map itself! Tip: When you move, each hex tile counts as one movement! Our first post-launch patch for Sunderfolk focuses on fixes for a few bugs and generally improves your Sunderfolk Controller experience! Thank you for your help in finding and squashing these bugs! (Don’t tell Esi) Priority Fixes Stuck on “Press Any Key” Splash Screen Made improvements to handling certain networking situations where some players may have been unable to continue past the "Press Any Button" startup splash screen. While we've made improvements in our networking, there are more improvements / fixes coming in future patches we are actively working on. Specifically: In some situations, players may see a blank QR code on the main menu screen for a period of time before it properly updates with a valid QR code. Some Steam Deck players have also reported being unable to bypass the startup screens (logos / splash screen). We are actively investigating those reports and working on a fix. Arcanist “Stargate” Softlock Fixed an issue where players may have experienced a softlock after an Arcanist uses their “Stargate” ability on Wurmsbait during the mission “Wurmsbait’s Mischief”. Updated Incorrect/Mismatched Fate Card Text Adjusted text on one of the Bard’s Negative Fate Cards to correctly indicate its intended effect. The original text “A random Hero or Ally in Range 3 of you Heals 3” has now been changed to “Choose a Target in Range 3 to Heal 3” The Negative Fate Card “-2 Damage, Blind Each Monster in Range 2” now correctly inflicts Blind instead of Provoked. Berserker “Grisly Force” Skill Card Adjustment The Berserker’s “Grisly Force” ability now ignores any active Shield buff on the Berserker to deal the intended damage when the “Deal” action occurs. Rogue “Penny Pinch” Skill Card Adjustment Fixed an issue where gold and loot did not always spawn on the map when a Rogue used their “Penny Pinch” Skill Card. Rogue Chroma Fix Fixed an issue where the Rogue’s applied Chroma color reverted to default when gaining Evasion. General Bugs & Issues Fixes Missions The Ogre Queen no longer uses “Retaliation” when under the “Confused” debuff. Enemies will now automatically lose the “Provoked” status at the end of their turn. Fixed an issue where Bosses no longer clear the “Root” debuff automatically at the end of their turn. Fixed an issue where enemies with Teleport and Leap abilities were gaining Haste buffs with the “Frenzy” passive. Fixed an issue where Guard Bug Allies summoned from Trinkets no longer skip their remaining actions when swapping with a Hero. Ally attacks will no longer trigger enemies’ Frenzy passive in Challenging or Shadowstone difficulty. Chirp is now able to use their Move action after activating her “Bulldoze” ability and dealing damage to enemies. Fixed an issue where a Round Timer is missing in (“All That Glitters”), causing the missions to be blocked from progressing. Character Fixed an issue where Heroes would lose more than the intende...Sunderfolk Developer Steam Stream - May 2ndMay 2, 2025 - Community Announcements{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/7c225a6c19d104b06f8212850e964f4d80f7eb71.jpg Hey Guardians! The Sunderfolk Team Sunderfolk takes BG3's co-op DnD experience down a new path, and it's out nowApr 23, 2025 - PCGamesNSure, if we're talking officially licensed videogames set in the Dungeons and Dragons universe, Baldur's Gate 3 is in a class of its own. Even if you remove DnD out of the equation, it's still one of the best co-op games ever made. However, while its enormous scope and seemingly endless possibilities are what make it so cherished, it can also be a barrier to some. Looking to create a co-op experience that's much closer to a chilled out DnD game night, and delivering it in a novel way using each player's smartphone, Sunderfolk is one of this year's most intriguing new projects. The Sunderfolk TeamSunderfolk gave me the DnD multiplayer experience Baldur's Gate 3 couldn'tApr 18, 2025 - PCGamesNI wanted to love Baldur's Gate 3's multiplayer. In theory, there's nothing better than cozying up with your partner after a week at work, creating yet another wood elf, and diving back into Larian's sprawling interpretation of Faerûn. But, at times, BG3 can be anything but relaxing - fights can last up to an hour, and a single misstep may spell disaster. While I love and laud its complexity, sometimes you want a simpler fantasy romp that still scratches that DnD itch. Dreamhaven's upcoming RPG, Sunderfolk, does just that. Our Closed Beta officially ended on February 4th, 2025, after a month and a half of testing! During that time, we’ve received over 1200 feedback submissions, and had 1700+ members join us in our closed beta Discord server! Now, we’ve used that information to make Sunderfolk even better and ready for release! Check out some of the upcoming changes in store for launch day, and join us in counting down the big day! Some Implemented Changes: Pacing Many small changes that add up to a major impact on the speed of play. These changes help to streamline the pacing of gameplay: Pulsing animation on the tile of Heroes that haven’t played yet this turn. Hurry up and take your turn! Movement and attack animations speed up when multiple monsters of the same type take their turns sequentially. This resets when a new monster type takes its turn. Increased the move and attack animation speed of most characters. Improvements to missions and Monsters to increase pacing: Tower Defense: Stun Bug now only attacks 1 target, not 3. Minecart Mayhem: reduced number of webs. Lost in Swamp: re-arranged starting Oozes, increase NPC health. Oozes’ Fate Cards no longer spawn additional Oozlings. The Fungal Vale: changed Oozes to Redcaps. Shadowshard: moved barrels closer to teleporters. Settings Added more settings to allow you to remove UI and Narrative friction: Setting to let you Auto-Skip Narrative, Tutorials, and/or Cinematics. Setting to let you Auto-End your turn instead of needing to press the End Turn button. Added more configuration options for the “Hold to Skip” feature, allowing you to skip your actions without looking down at your phone. Added Exit to Hero Select to make it easier to add new Heroes to existing campaigns. Difficulty Improving the Difficulty curve to be more consistent across missions, while pushing to distinguish Brightstone and Challenging as more distinct difficulty modes. Easier Brightstone Difficulty mode. Invincible NPCs. Harder Challenging Difficulty mode. All Monsters have Frenzy and become more powerful when they are: Attacked by a Hero. Unable to attack for the round. Stronger Monsters. More Elite Monsters Spawns. Shadowstone Difficulty Unlocked Automatically. Heroes After analyzing data and going through your feedback, we've made some balance changes to some Heroes! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/2a0658cae46cf42fae40dc6106b80944dd98ef49.png Arcanist Arcanist is in a good spot; they've received balance tweaks to some spells. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/865387eb18e6de41fed96c59819224646a5d09d1.png Bard Bard has some room for some extra power, so they received some damage and movement increases. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/ce2b503b03ec08635e8ba38d5709edfb3942ef49.png Berserker Berserker's in a good spot; touching up some under-loved spells. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/ed20bb20e4c58e20970dd3bab51d7fa4bcb9556a.png Pyromancer Pyro has a lot of power, so shift...Sunder-Dev Diary #1 - The Inspiration Behind SunderfolkApr 10, 2025 - Community Announcements{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/0a433bd9d87d24c70b75f0afc8292ae5cae63d02.png Hi, I’m Erin Marek, Game Director on Sunderfolk. Since kicking off our closed beta back in December, we’ve been blown away by all the great feedback and questions in Discord. These discussions inspired the team and me to share some insight into our approach to the game. Over the coming weeks, we’ll share some unique perspectives on our different disciplines, backgrounds, and how it all comes together to make Sunderfolk into a game we hope you, your friends, and your family will love. To kick off these developer diaries, I’d like to dive into the early development of the game and some of the things we hope to accomplish through Sunderfolk. Let’s rewind a bit to some of the earliest conversations around the game. Kindling connection with familiarity When the team first started forming the initial concept of the game, one thing kept resurfacing again and again– how much we love the feeling of being together and playing tabletop board games with our friends and family. We set out to build something that inspired those same feelings through a video game experience. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/b0ac5eac0b3c6db04f93b6bcd731bf2599843f9f.jpg Early concept art for Sunderfolk At the time of those early brainstorms, Covid had made many of us feel isolated and alone, so there was a really strong desire to find a way to reconnect with those earlier days of just having fun together around the table or in couch co-op. The team started jamming on how we might create similar experiences through video games to make it a little easier for folks who aren’t as familiar with the genre. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/2f7654c681fe91b57b4c5c126d1b9d233fa4cc5e.jpg Early pen & paper concept for Sunderfolk combat. See anything familiar? Brightstone versus Shadowstone With the goal of bringing folks together, it was super important for us to make the world around Sunderfolk approachable and inviting for a wide audience. We aimed to strike balance between creating a lighthearted, whimsical world while still allowing for moments of depth and seriousness. Our world is shaped by its underground setting, which heavily influenced the game’s themes and design. You’ll see plenty of bugs, mushrooms, stones, gems—elements that bring the environment to life. The overall story itself is another way we think about inviting players in, both novice and veteran. A lot of fantasy stories revolve around a classic good-versus-evil dynamic, which is something we really liked because it’s instantly familiar and easy to grasp. This backdrop naturally influenced our take on the good-versus-evil theme, leading us to the central conflict of Brightstone versus Shadowstone. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/3f55d8b8ff94bd0920e4e6c895effce07cb5a2a0.jpg Early concept art for the town of Arden What we’d really love for folks to take away after they play Sunderfolk is excitement to play more board games and D&D and tabletop games, especially ne...Inspired by classic DnD, turn-based RPG Sunderfolk just got a release dateMar 25, 2025 - PCGamesNI am very much in my Dungeons and Dragons era (insert sparkle emojis on either side). I bet you never thought you’d be called that. I know I didn’t!" - Sinclair, Tavern owner. The Rogue may look like they’ll stab you in the back for some loose change, and they may have at some point, but they are devoted to keeping Arden safe from other dangers. Their employer, Sinclair, trusts them implicitly with keeping the tavern safe, and knows all about their shady past. What that shady past is depends on you, whether it’s a previous smuggling job, previously from another city, or humbler origins in Arden. Lord of Edges The Rogue may primarily serve as a damage class, but don’t let that fool you—they can also be a reliable tank with their Shroud ability! Shroud allows the Rogue to envelop themselves in shadow, allowing them to automatically dodge any damage source once, as well as deal extra damage when active. However, you’ll lose Shroud if you’re hit by any source of damage, so try to avoid that. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/bfa14812a83bd914a491c0409c92fbfa97b85a4a.jpg It doesn’t go away with dealing damage though! Let your knives go brrrrr. Movement is key to a Rogue, as you can’t be adjacent to enemies in order for your Shroud to activate. Some abilities will remove Shroud automatically when you deal damage to grant buffs or debuffs, such as their Sneak Attack ability, which Stuns the enemy after attacking but removes your beloved shadow cloak. To help the Rogue get the upper-hand (and perhaps set up some backstabbing shenanigans) they receive the following Skill Cards after the tutorial section: Slice Twice: Move, hit an enemy twice, then move away or push them to get your Shroud ability. Best of all, Shroud gives you extra damage on that second hit! Isolate: Get more movement to find the perfect prey, then deal damage. You deal extra damage if that enemy has no one adjacent to them! Myriad Blades: Become an agent of the shadows by attacking, teleporting, and attacking again. Your enemies will never know what hit them. Balancing between being in the enemy’s face and moving away to activate Shroud is key to a Rogue, but there are always options to get right back in their face! Using the right Skill Cards can have you dancing between enemies and tanking for your friends without a care in the world. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/91cf28d179388beafed09f5e7c4c30362e149d63.jpg Or, you know, to get loot. Priorities. Once Rogues gain more experience, they’ll be able to add powerful Skill Cards into their arsenal, such as: Pennypinch: An ability for your sticky fingers! Move, then attack, which creates gold, attack, create more gold, then move! Smoke and Mirrors: You thought the Arcanist made the only decoys? Attack, teleport away, and leave a decoy in your place. They’ll even attack the enemy after you move! Soulthieve: Move, then target an adjacent creature with buffs. Steal those for yourself, then deal damage with your ne...Meet Your Heroes: The RangerMar 3, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsMarkhor Marker {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/72533002326ccb9b34f9be543fd1288360dc9def.png It’s been great having ya living with me and the kid, and now everyone’ll see how great ya are too! - Batu, the town clothier. When playing, your Ranger may be focused on hunting, recovering from a devastating loss, or a traveling soul. No matter what you choose as their background, the Ranger will always be the party’s supportive archer. Underground Strider The Ranger is a perfect mix of damage and support, with focuses on ranged combat, debuffing enemies, and providing crowd control abilities. Nock Back - Move, then push an enemy or ally back 3 hexes, then move again. Leaves Vines that can Root enemies or allow extra movement for allies. Piercing Arrow - A line attack that lets the Ranger move into position, and fire up to 5 hexes away. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/2e6e65cb7a114a3a3dbc4c185e8bce2d3ab09de2.jpg Satisfying? Yes. Does it take a while to set up? Also yes. A Ranger is at their best when they’re away from enemies, but they can also buff themselves and leap away if they need to get in close. Their Spring Step skill allows you to attack, Slow their enemy, then Leap away to safety! If you land away from any monsters, you gain Haste and Strength! They also have light repositioning abilities that can not only be used to push away enemies, but can help you give your allies the needed push to get right into position and deal more damage! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/6794892555494f93eeceb9cd2aa767241fa84656.jpg Give your allies a healthy push in the right direction. To add even more variety in their spells, the Ranger will also receive the following Skill Cards at higher levels: Scout Ahead - Attack, Move, then debuff up to 2 enemies with Expose! Your Rogue and Pyromancer friends will thank you. Snaring Vines - Move, then create 3 Vines within 3 hexes of your location, then move again. Bait enemies into getting rooted, or help allies get to safety! Wild Bloom - You don’t need rain for this super bloom! Unleash an area-of-effect attack, and create 2 Vines in any empty hexes within the affected area, then move! Piercing Fate Similar to the other heroes, early-game Fate Cards provided for the Ranger focus on either self-buffs or debuffs, so you can choose to build your Ranger as more damage-focused or support-focused! But for Arden this time!” - Scorch While their sibling Scorch might not be the brightest ember in the furnace, they do know one thing: their little kin has a mighty fire burning within them. The Pyromancer has always had a reputation to strive for, and based on your preferences, their dreams may lie within being a leader of the people, finding purpose after a long slumber, or perhaps failed ambition will drive them. No matter how you choose their path, they will always be the warmth that their party relies on. Pyrotactics The Pyromancer might look adorable, but they’re a confined inferno and they need to let it out. Fire’s the name of the game, and unleashing it is the prize. The Pyromancer really gets their power by absorbing Fire and making it their own, then unleashing it through their skills. Each stack of Firepower, their passive ability, gives +2 to each attack, and they can stack it up to 3 times! This will also stack with any Strength buffs, so if you want to erase something off the map (with fire), the Pyromancer is for you. After completing the first few missions in Sunderfolk, the Pyromancer will be able to use: Bouncing Blaze: Move, deal ranged damage, with a bonus of your fireball bouncing to an adjacent enemy. It’s a deadly hot potato! Flame Breath: Move towards enemies and unleash a line fire attack that can hit up to 3 foes! Meteor Crash: Become the fireball of your dreams. Leap 3, and deal damage to all enemies around your landing spot. You can also create your own Fire this way! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/87f1d10ccad6929e05614861fd5ee489cac225bf.png Fun Fact: The Pyro loves being surrounded by fire! Not fun for your teammates, though. The Pyromancer isn’t always just about raw damage! This is a game of strategy and tactics after all, and they’ll need to have a few extra tricks up their sleeve if they want to help their team out. Luckily, they do receive some great abilities that can help boost their survivability and overall tankiness. The Pyro can start to use the following Skill Cards at later levels: Trailblaze: Become the fiery change you want to be in the world. Set 3 hexes on fire, leap to one of them, then deal damage to whoever is in range. Cauterize: Did the Rogue take that last heal shrine? Move towards fire, choose an area with tons of it, then absorb it all and heal 2 health for each fire you absorb. Your teammates will appreciate the space back, too. Friendly Fire: Make your friends nervous by targeting them after moving, then unleash some fire right on them and deal damage to adjacent enemies! Your friend won’t be hurt, physically at least. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45246535/3fc711eaecbb42ec20205f0d95e7c0b2ff06b30f.jpg Look at that delighted face. No Rangers were harmed in the making of this screenshot. Well, not by the Pyro, anyway. Fiery Fate Wh...
