Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Knights of the Old Republic remake devs insist the game is “alive and well” after their split from EmbracerApr 3, 2024 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunPresumably, the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic can’t hold up a newspaper with today’s date to prove that it is actually doing okay and hasn’t been quietly disposed of in a tax report somewhere, Warner Bros-style. As such, it falls to the head of current developers Saber Interactive to promise that the long-in-the-works Star Wars game is still “alive and well”. While Embracer have yet to actually state this out loud, it sounds like the KOTOR remake will be a "joint project" between Saber and Embracer. It also probably won't be out in the next 12 months. Given the project's repeated disruptions and delays, I suspect many of us will settle for the game coming out at all. According to some sources, the new version of BioWare's classic RPG game is finished, over, never going to see the light of day. According to others, the KOTOR remake might be troubled, and going through a patch of development hell, but it's still alive, and in the works. One of the greatest Star Wars games ever, a return of Knights of the Old Republic would be very welcome indeed. With Star Wars Eclipse also in the works, one Disney executive comments on the new KOTOR. Read the rest of the story... Earlier this year, the KOTOR remake was presumed canceled after mentions of it disappeared from various official websites. This proved to be false, and the remake of one of the greatest Star Wars games ever was confirmed to be still in development, or at least, not completely canceled. Now, in the last few days, new reports have surfaced claiming Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake is finished for good - but apparently this might not be true either. Read more Uh oh, the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake might be dead for real this timeNov 19, 2023 - VG247Sorry to those of you looking forward to the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, but it sounds like the project is at a standstill. Earlier this week on GiantBomb's Game Mess Mornings, frequent sharer of insider tidbits Jeff Grubb made the claim that the Knights of the Old Republic remake is no longer being worked on in any shape or form. "This game is not being worked on right now, full stop," Grubb said. "This game is not being worked on in any way, at any studio." It's obviously a confident statement from Grubb, one that like all statements like these should be taken with a grain of salt. But it's not like the Knights of the Old Republic has had a particularly smooth time so far. Last year a report claimed that the remake was indefinitely delayed, with both the game's art director and design director having been fired around the time. Earlier this year a financial report implied that it wasn't exactly dead in the water just yet, though it didn't clarify how the project was coming along. So this recent report from Grubb isn't exactly the most confidence inspiring one. One of the greatest RPGs, the original Knights of the Old Republic - created by Mass Effect developer-to-be BioWare - is an icon of PC gaming. A full remake, originally helmed by Aspyr, was revealed at a Sony showcase two years ago. But now trailers and pages connected to the game have seemingly been removed from the internet, as the Embracer Group, which owns the studio behind the supposed KOTOR remake, institutes far-reaching cuts and closures. A Sony rep told Kotaku that "as part of normal business, we delist assets with licensed music when the licenses expire." The only music in the trailer is a clip of the Star Wars theme, which is owned by Disney, and it seems odd to me that a teaser for a licensed Star Wars game would be pulled because it has licensed Star Wars music, but I am not a businessman and so my understanding of how these things work may be flawed or incomplete... It was originally supposed to start in October but the shock reveal of a KOTOR remake has meant that the animated series is being delayed - but there are spin-offs coming first. The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic animated series is being made in Unreal 5 by the fans in Unreal Cinema, which was given the thumbs-up by Lucasfilm as long as it's non-profit and doesn't use footage from the movies. The big reveal back in August was the cast list and a targeted release date for the first episode of mid-October. Clearly that didn't happen, and in their latest video (below) Unreal Cinema confirms that "due to the announcement of the remake" and a few other factors the KOTOR Unreal series has been delayed - but they do confirm "the series will still be continuing as planned" and isn't cancelled. Dubbed “Bring Home the Bounty”, it’s made up of twelve weeks of reveals running to the end of the year, the first of which is a swath of action figures and clothing. Each week of reveals is hinted at with an icon of some sort. Some are characters from the Star Wars universe, while others are more abstract concepts, like a logo for the 50th anniversary of Lucasfilms, or a pair of lightsabers. Most interesting is Week 10, which is represented by a game controller, suggesting a game announcement is imminent. No other info is offered as to what that game would be, though. We already know about the Knights of the Old Republic remake in the works for PC and PS5, and the port of the original game for Switch. And there’s a new expansion for The Old Republic on the way. Beyond that, there’s only rumors and barely announced threads of upcoming games to go on. And there’s plenty to glean from out there. We know about an Ubisoft open world game set in the Star Wars universe, and then there’s the rumors of a David Cage-directed Star Wars game. Or it could be the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. We didn’t see it at EA Play, but we might see it here. And then there’s the possibility of something entirely unexpected. There’s plenty to speculate on. This piece was originally published in December 2017. There are spoilers ahead for Knights of the Old Republic. How do you follow a game like Knights of the Old Republic, the most famous original Star Wars tale a video game has ever told? Because once upon a time BioWare was - and it came up with an idea. Read more KOTOR Remake was almost a remastered collection by Baldur's Gate EE devsSep 19, 2021 - PCGamesNThe E3-like PlayStation Showcase earlier this month brought with it the long-awaited announcement of a full remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - one of the best RPGs of all time. Now it seems like we almost got a KOTOR remastered collection of both games in the series instead, from the ex-BioWare staff at Beamdog. As Sony's showcase stream revealed, the KOTOR Remake is on its way from Aspyr Media - and it's definitely coming to PC, by the way - but fans almost got something very different instead. One interesting part about the Remake is that original developer BioWare doesn't appear to be involved at all - so it's surprising to learn that one of BioWare's founders actually pitched another way of bringing back KOTOR. According to Beamdog CEO - and BioWare co-founder - Trent Oster, his studio actually pitched a remaster called the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Reforged Collection, which seemingly would including both KOTOR games. Given Beamdog is responsible for the remasters of RPGs such as Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and Planescape: Torment, it would seem a natural fit. Read the rest of the story... When Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake was announced on Thursday - and was confirmed later that it is definitely coming to PC - fans noticed that the only companies mentioned in the trailer were Aspyr Media, Lucasfilm Games, and PlayStation/Sony Interactive Entertainment. Completely excluded from the trailer and even the press release was any mention of KOTOR's original developer BioWare or EA. Other than the fact that BioWare created the original Knights of the Old Republic - and that BioWare/EA is still supporting MMO sequel The Old Republic - neither BioWare nor EA seem involved in the remake in any way.
