The classic version of Star Wars Battlefront 2 has had its first patch in three years reverted after it broke aspects of the old PC game. A post on Steam simply reads: "reverting to the previous version". Yeah, we guess there's not much more to say than that, really. Original story follows. Star Wars Battlefront 2 - as in the original, from 2005 - has already gotten a surprising number of updates to keep it viable on modern machines. A surprise hotfix landed today, adding proper controller support and better UI scaling at higher resolutions. A pleasant surprise, right? Well, it seems there are a fair few issues with the update, and the patch is causing more frustration than celebration among players. The official announcement simply says that the hotfix "addresses a number of issues with graphic resolution and controller support in the game". As players have found, the update has overhauled the menus to allow you to navigate them with a controller - something not previously possible on PC - and scales up the UI, which had started to appear miniscule at modern resolutions. This time it takes the form of some suspiciously long legs, and some familiar crewmates are joining in on the action, as someone's made a Star Wars Battlefront 2 PC mod combining both Among Us and Fall Guys. Made by TigerVenom22 and ToastedShoes, the mod replaces all original trilogy-era infantry with Fall Guys characters on the light side, and Among Us characters on the dark. Makes sense given a selection of the crewmates are basically eldritch horrors. They're capable of wielding lightsabers or using Force lightning (on the dark side at least), while the Fall Guys beans come with a range of costumes - one of which has Rowan Atkinson's face. I think there might be a joke there somewhere. My personal favourite is the extremely tall General Grievous Among Us crewmate with four floating lightsabers. Why? I hear you ask. It's a good question - and one I can't entirely answer - but it seems the mod was commissioned by ToastedShoes, who made a video showcasing it on his YouTube channel about a month ago (a heads-up that there's some sponsored content in the footage). It seems to have been inspired by the sudden rise of Among Us which many attributed to the popularity of Fall Guys over the summer, and a perceived rivalry between the two party games. Although they seem to get along just fine on Twitter. Better yet, cross-play is supported between both platforms, hopefully boosting the chances of finding an online game. ORIGINAL STORY 5.55pm: If you've been looking for an excuse to pick up Star Wars Battlefront up again, you know, 16 years after it was released, now's the perfect time; entirely unexpectedly, developer Pandemic Studios' much-loved space shooter just got its online multiplayer mode restored on Steam. The original Star Wars Battlefront (not to be confused with DICE's 2015 shooter of the same name) released all the way back in 2004 on PS2, Xbox, and PC, giving players the chance to battle their way to victory across a selection of familiar Star Wars locales - fighting from the perspective of either the Rebel Alliance, Galactic Empire, Galactic Republic, or the Confederacy of Independent Systems, and utilising multiple classes and vehicles. BB-8, who hits Battlefront 2 late January 2020, is a hero character for the Resistance, while their evil counterpart BB-9E is a playable villain for the First Order. Before that, on 17th December, First Order players can soar through the skies with the new Jet Trooper character as part of the Rise of Skywalker update - much to Finn's amazement. For the Resistance, there are two new classes: Gunner and Spy, both of which are played by two brand new alien species. Although these species haven't been named yet, one of them could be Babu Frik, a new creature revealed for the movie back in October. The Rise of Skywalker content will launch for all players on 17th December. ORIGINAL: Star Wars Battlefront 2 is well over two-years-old at this point, but DICE isn't done updating the shooter just yet. A new leak paints a pretty convincing picture of a Celebration Edition of Battlefront 2 releasing later this week. The leak originates from TrueAchievements.com, and claims the Celebration Edition of Battlefront 2 releases on 5th December. The upgraded edition reportedly features all past and future updates, including heroes Rey and Finn, villain Kylo Ren, and cosmetic appearances for regular foot soldiers. Leading the way is Star Wars: Battlefront 2 for 3.99. The shooter from a galaxy far, far away hasn't fared particularly well since release, what with loot box shenanigans, microtransaction woes and copious bugs. However, that price could be tempting enough just to try out the single-player campaign. In terms of sheer value for money, the best of the lot has to be the Dragon Age: Inquisition - Game of the Year Edition for 7.99. Along with the base game, you'll get the Jaws of Hakkon, The Descent and Trespasser DLC packs. Plus, you get an upgrade to the Deluxe Edition, along with both the Spoils of the Avvar and the Spoils of the Qunari items. Inquisition is nowhere near Origins, but it's still a solid BioWare fantasy RPG. The pesky destroyers arrive in the game on 26th June as part of the Where are those Droidekas? update. For those unfamiliar, Droidekas were first seen taking on Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace. They're pretty powerful droids - so powerful in fact that Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan peg it when they turn up. "Coming to The Vault in a galaxy not so far away: strategic, cinematic, laser-blasting Star Wars games," EA says in its latest Origins Access update (thanks, PC Gamer), presumably timed to tie in with May the Fourth celebrations. "Our growing collection already includes 20+ Star Wars titles, but now we're adding even more games." The classic title by Pandemic was previously accessible on PS2, Xbox One (via back compat) and through physical copies for PC (or via other nefarious means online), so its appearance on Steam and GOG makes access a lot easier for Star Wars fans who fancy a nostalgia trip. Which is all Star Wars fans, let's be honest. As the original was published by LucasArts, this would have been a Disney decision rather than EA's. Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2005) has been available on both Steam and GOG for some time now, so the addition of the original title means the set is now complete. Known as Capital Supremacy, the new is described as "an immersive, Clone Wars-era authentic experience" that pits two teams of 20, in the role of either the Galactic Republic or the Separatists, against each other, aided by 12 AI-controlled troopers on each side. Playing out in a similar fashion to Battlefield 2142's Titan Mode, Capital Supremacy unfolds over two phases. The first is "non-linear" ground battle (appropriately called the Ground Phase) that sees participants utilising "a wide array of tactics, trooper classes, land vehicles, reinforcement units, and hero characters to attack and defend different areas across the surface". And so it's only right that Anakin Skywalker's upcoming incarnation in Star Wars: Battlefront 2 also doesn't like sand. I mean, it's hard to change your mind about something like sand, even over the coarse of 17 years. In a post on the Battlefront forums, developer DICE went into detail about the arrival of the Chosen One in Battlefront 2, going over his various abilities and playstyle (as he takes and does damage his fury grows, which sounds about right). EA's server troubles began around 5pm UK time this evening, as BioWare's VIP demo event got underway. In the rush to play, servers quickly became overwhelmed, with players reporting continued difficulties joining a session. Community manager Jesse Anderson was quick to respond, telling players via Twitter that, "Servers are getting SLAMMED", and that the "team is working on it as we speak." Shortly after, EA Help reported that "more server capacity" was being added in a bid to ease network woes. Geonosis is the planet where the battle takes place at the end of Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones, the one with loads of Jedi in it. That was really exciting at the time - we hadn't seen Jedi fight in those numbers before. It's also where Count Dooku chops Anakin's hand off (planting a seed of inspiration for later life) and old bogey-face Yoda wades in, jumping and spinning an awful lot. That was also quite exciting - we hadn't seen him fight before. That whole sequence from the film looks ropy now, because of the aging CGI. Actually, compare it to Star Wars Battlefront 2 and the game looks better! PEGI (Pan European Game Information) said it will start to include the new content descriptor icon for physical releases of video games to help inform parents prior to a purchase about the potential for in-game spending. This descriptor will be applied to all games that offer the option to buy digital goods with real currency, and will start appearing on physical releases towards the end of this year. This is a somewhat vague phrase that doesn't distinguish between the likes of DLC expansions and microtransactions or loot boxes, for example, but it's a start.
