We’re cooking up a storm at Next Fest!Jun 9, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsGrab that frying pan and sharpen that machete, we’re about to cook up the next big feast at Next Fest! The chefs may still be cooking up the full release but, in the meantime, we’ve got a public demo as a starter before the main course arrives later on this year. A three-course meal of an adventure: restaurant manager, light survival RPG, and life sim, all set in the zany universe of the Horseshoe Nebula. As the galaxy's (soon to be) premiere chef, it's up to you to seek out the finest ingredients from alien planets, cook delicious dishes, and serve them to customers in the comfort of your fully-customisable space trailer. There's a whole universe of ingredients out there... if they don't eat you first. Explore distant planets, derelict space stations, and your own basement for plants, critters, and other tasty morsels. Along the way, you'll come across space pirates, ancient ruins, and a suspiciously high number of recently abandoned restaurants. Your first scooter now also zooms faster and even has a built-in mini booster for speedy deliveries or quick escapes from pirates or your responsibilities. This zany bar is host to a variety of unusual characters, some funky decorations, and Zlurka himself, who is definitely human. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1272290/Space_Chef/ The Characters: Zlurkas Bar is a great place to socialize with the locals and get to know what’s happening around the cosmos. One of the first locals you’ll meet is the top-tier gamer, J’sie, reigning champ of Zlurkas with her unbeatable Space Inhalers high score. The ill-fitting fake nose and glasses might be a slight giveaway that might be bending the truth, but you’ll find that Zlurka is pretty insistent on his human identity. Cyclonia is a rough planet with strong winds and even stronger rocks. The critters on this world are a sturdy bunch, with tough exteriors but delicious interiors. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1272290/Space_Chef/ The Creatures & Critters: With the planet being so dry and borderline inhospitable, the creatures that dwell here need to be a sturdy bunch and as tough as the planet itself. The Scorching Desert is home to quite a few of these tough critters. The Tentacolon seems to be some kind of subterranean monster. No one quite knows how far down it goes, not that you’d want to know with that fiery display it’s putting on! Spraying flames like a BBQ gas canister gone rogue! Not everything in The Scorching Desert is an immediate threat though. The Flapperdash is correctly named with how ear-flappingly fast it is! A group called the ”Speed Runners” compete to catch as many Flapperdashs as they can in 2 minutes on this planet. When caught, they drop some delicious meat slices, perfect for any meaty recipe. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37183512/340e6cf2ae3c8923e25b8e671ce43402d2c827f9.png The Shrubs & the Vines With water being a rare resource on this planet, it’s a botanical miracle that the planet has any botany. Instead, it’s quite the opposite! Cyclonia is home to an array of many different species of flora, but bear in mind that most of it is spiky and harmful in nature. A great example of one of these prickly plants is the Cactopus, spiky on the outside and almost entirely water on the inside! Is the risk truly worth the reward? The answer is always: yes! Further down south on the planet is The Spikey Pathway, the perfect place to collect a trailer's worth of Lime Slime. This slimy substance is the ideal ingredient and packs a citrussy punch! Add a little bit of water and you’ve got yourself the perfect Mama’s Lemonade. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37183512/d499fbe003817be7c99bb1cfd2a8d4df93500c26.png That’s another tour done! With Cyclonia crossed off the list, we’ve now visited everything within the Inner Ring. We’ll have to pack a bit more equipment for our next travels, wherever that may be! This planet is so full of flora and fauna that I’m drooling at the mouth for all the flavour combinations. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1272290/Space_Chef/ The Creatures & Critters: Lush is home to many strange lifeforms, including the Beefle, but those are everywhere (even in my trailer!). Some are friendly and others will attack the first opportunity they get. Although some of these creatures are aggressive in nature, we’re not ones to back down from a challenge here in the Horseshoe Nebula, especially when we’re hungry. The Snapper is a great example of a plant with a bad attitude but some delicious beans! Excellent for a snack on the go. Not everything on this planet is trying to kill you. The Polka Snake is a critter living deep within the Luma Jungle. Unfortunately for them, they’re also delicious! Even the local Froll can’t get enough of them. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37183512/17265e197ed80a5e2e3b80254fbb4e2e059a06cf.png The Shrubs & the Vines A large majority of Lush has been overtaken by vegetation! Some areas are too overgrown and they’ve been lost to the vines. Others I can still manage to hack my way through, revealing new parts of the planet that are perhaps thousands of years old! The vegetation on Lush has all types of uses. It can used to make amazing dishes such as Beefleballs, Biteroot Blend, and many others. This Valentine's Day we’re looking at romance in Space Chef and how you can make the void of space a lot more romantic. The romance system has been expanded to include a unique progression path for each character - woo your favorites by gifting them their unique loved dishes. Normal Heart - You’ve given the NPC one unique gift, and they’re starting to warm up to you. This means that there are new dialog options available. Big Heart - You’re one step closer to becoming partners - keep those gifts coming! Pounding Hearts - You're now partners! When new dialog options are enabled, you need to choose your words wisely to advance your relationship. However, most of the time, you can always try again another day. A friendly warning though… Some choices you make might make the NPC and romance opportunity disappear for good, so be careful with your action... Want to romance multiple persons? We’re back with a fresh batch of updates, improvements, and sneak peeks to share with you. Your feedback and support have been fantastic and are helping shape the final version of Space Chef. What’s next: Polish, polish, polish! We’re thrilled to announce that Space Chef has officially entered a proper Alpha stage, meaning that all main features and content are complete. There are still a lot of bugs to squash, and even more polish to be made. We're also doing tweaks to the UI and feedback, to increase the satisfaction when you've worked like crazy to get a unique and mythical recipe to another happy customer. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37183512/46130fccb763dc2271c729680841dacc34ea1ba2.png The delicious Shimmerspores on Caveron can only be harvested by walking nearby and triggering an explosion. But watch out, the Splittler isn't too happy to see you in the caves! Right now we’re focusing on making the first 30 minutes of the game as exciting and engaging as possible, and giving a taste of the rest of the game. We want every player to experience an adventure packed with exploration, cooking, and a few surprises along the way. Gameplay improvements & challenges We’ve been paying close attention to feedback on our death and inventory mechanics. Many of you suggested adding a "Keep Inventory" setting, which we added, but we're still discussing it - should it be left in the game, or should we replace it with a "drop stuff where you die, so you can go back and pick it up" feature? We want a perfect balance of challenge and fun and make it feel rewarding for risk-takers without making it too easy for the faint of heart. Balance, balance, balance… Another feature we recently added is the "I'm about to die" UI effect that covers the edges of the screen. A similar effect is shown when you're about to freeze to death or get cooked by the Cyclonian heat. And don't forget about dying of lack of oxygen or getting poisoned. But, as with any grand space expedition, there are obstacles - in our case, about 4298 bugs. Ok, there aren't that many bugs, but it's still a decent amount that we need to squash. Picture this: one minute you're squishing a bug that took a mere 5 minutes to fix, feeling like a Galactic Bug Warrior. The next minute, you're wrestling with a code-beast that's determined to play hide and seek for 5 days straight. It's like cooking a complex dish, where adding a pinch of salt somehow turns the soup into jelly. In the wacky world of game development, every fix is a new adventure. It's a bit like whack-a-mole, but with keyboards and a lot more caffeine. One moment everything's running smoother than a Graffle on a hoverboard, and the next, you're watching a beautifully rendered Beefle do the cha-cha instead of walking, sliding around like it's on ice. Ah, the unexpected joys of game development! 👩‍🚀 What's Cooking in the Development Kitchen? We're hard at work squashing these bugs and going over each and every small and big part of the game to ensure your experience is out of this world. While we might not be at the finish line just yet, we're closer than ever, with our thrusters set to 'polish and perfect' mode. In this update, we’ll be revisiting the barren deserts of Cyclonia, talking about the weather (everyone’s favorite topic), and introducing a few new mechanics that we’re sure will make your transition to an interstellar lifestyle even smoother. Over the summer, we’ve been cooking up a storm (Quite literally. We don't recommend bringing an umbrella). Here’s the cosmic scoop on what we’ve achieved in the past two months. Of Maps, Monsters, and Meteor Craters Cyclonia has gone through a lot of changes and innovations since our original Kickstarter demo, which we’re very excited to share with you! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37183512/9aa6a56221b99d132901b3b5b8e577965d50d958.png The full planet map has now been implemented, but will be shrouded in a fog of war. Or should we say a fog of please-explore? (Nailed it). Every step you take, every move you make…will be tracked by unknown cosmic forces and result in a Location Discovered pop-up. Every time you find a new location, you’ll earn precious XP! That XP will automatically be sprinkled onto your Exploration skill, so you’ll be a well-seasoned space-traveler in no time. But all of this exploration would be nothing without strange and horrifying alien creatures to meet with (and possibly make meat out of)! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37183512/26cb8c822553bae3cd5dbac2667a4eeadf01dbd4.png From sentient cacti to two-headed snakes, Cyclonia is now rich with life. All of the local wildlife has now been added to the planet, so you’ll never be short of creatures to study, hunt, and run away from. Each creature has its own unique behaviors, with some being nocturnal and some being diurnal. That’s a very fancy way of saying that some come out at night and others come out during the day. Don’t even ask us what crepuscular means. We’ve also added a feature where special and legendary creatures will only spawn once you’ve reached a certain level, so you’ll have to up your game if you want to take down big game. Alongside the biodiversity, we wanted to really spice up the terrain on Cyclonia, so we’ve dotted meteor craters, hot springs, natural bridges, and spaceship wrecks to give you that added sense of life-endangerment. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37183512/deee0e89e8e07303c034f0328d44ce5e810b540e.png It’ll also allow you to climb to higher parts of the map, where you’ll find the Hornagle and their notoriously delicious eggs. So we thought, how can we make it seem a bit friendlier? By adding space pirates, of course! After all, what could warm you up better in the cold and unforgiving vacuum of space than a jolly old firefight with a group of hungry space pirates? {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/37183512/5c71e9b947a61e87b2993c4413acf945a03b6afe.gif You’ll now meet bands of space pirates roaming around the cosmic sea in search of defenseless ships to plunder, so make sure you’ve got a few weapon attachments (or a knack for quick piloting and sharp turns!) We’ve also added other NPCs out in space that are significantly less likely to steal your booty. At the moment, we can’t seem to stop them from flying into the sun and turning themselves into crispy metal bacon, but we’re hard at work putting in waypoints to protect all future space NPCs in our care. RIP Stands For Restaurants in Pieces As you’re exploring the galaxy, you may stumble across some abandoned restaurants that shared the same mysterious fate as the one belonging to your grandma. What happened to them? Where are their owners? And, most importantly, what’s in it for you? Cyclonia is now made up of various different biomes, including vast deserts and barren rock terrain. When you make your first visit, your spaceship will land in Area 1 marked on the map below. But how do you make it to the other areas? We’ll keep that a secret for now, but you’ll need to unlock new tools to reach them. We promise we’ll make it worth your while, as different areas will have new ingredients and creatures. We’ve made some great progress since the last update, including adding two visitable planets, three settlements, NPCs, interiors, and a whole bunch of interplanetary space to explore. Armed with the feedback from our wonderful Alpha Backers, we and the QA team have been busy as a bunch of Beefles in nesting season, fixing bugs and rebalancing mechanics to make the game better. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1272290/Space_Chef/ Getting in the (Outer) Zone Aside from our latest alpha test, our focus has been the Outer Zone.
