Secret of Mana

Five of the Best: ShopsAug 30, 2019 - EurogamerWelcome to another week of Five of the Best, a series where we celebrate the overlooked parts of video games. They're the kind of things you don't pay much attention to at the time, but which spring readily to mind years later, proving just how memorable they were. So far we've had potions, hands, and dinosaurs - an eclectic bunch! - and we've enjoyed reading your suggestions as much as sharing ours. Today, then, another batch, another five. And the theme... Shops! Oh, how many virtual registers we've rung over the years. Imagine a role-playing game without one - you can't. It would be sacrilege. You simply must visit a new shop in every town and have their wares be slightly more powerful than they were where you came from. Everyone knows that. But there are so many shops, it's often hard to remember a single one. It's not just RPGs. I remember ogling the superbikes for sale in Road Rash and then crashing them when I eventually saved up enough money to buy them. I remember spending ages shopping for shorts and T-shirts in a knock-off GAP in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. And I've probably spent more money than I should have on costumes in Fortnite, which is hardly my fault when they sell such silly costumes, is it?! Read more Secret of Mana and the art of a good boxJun 17, 2019 - EurogamerWe don't talk about box art so much around these parts any more. Maybe that's because we don't see much by way of video game boxes anymore - they're fast becoming a thing of the past, for better and for worse. Playing the surprise Switch release of The Collection of Mana recently, though, I was reminded of the power of a strong piece of cover art - and of an artform that's in danger of being lost. I never played Secret of Mana first time around in the 90s, though it's lodged in my consciousness just as firmly as all those SNES classics that I did. It's one of those games that was a constant presence on shelves of game stores - remember them! - usually nestled behind the counter, a luxurious item that was available on import those long months it took to finally come to Europe. There was always something special about Square's 16-bit RPGs of the time - something exotic, these entire universes condensed into a single cart, and that feeling was only underlined here in Europe by how expensive these things were. For most ordinary 11-year-olds, unless you got lucky and had a friend with rich parents, these things were almost entirely out of reach. And, when you're a kid, when something's out of reach you tend to fixate on it. I saw them in countless other games, their lush branches decorating the corners of fantasy worlds filled with magic, dragons, and bugs. Oh, so many bugs. I’ve never played the first Star Ocean, the Suikoden series, Terranigma, or Chrono Trigger. But I know them. They are games I ve always appreciated in a disjointed state, their plants and furniture dissected and laid out on sprite sheets like tiny organs on an autopsy table. I saw all this because, when I was a teenager, I illegally ripped art assets from commercial games. Known in Japan as Seiken Densetsu 2 and barely known as anything in Europe due to a very small PAL print run. For those who could get it, it’s a fondly remembered if slightly awkward SNES action-RPG that skews a little more heavily towards the RPG side than most. As of today, it’s back and looking downright fine; Square Enix’s 3D remake (first announced at Gamescom last year) is out today on Steam. (more…) Secret of Mana remake system requirements and price revealedFeb 9, 2018 - PC GamerSecret of Mana was originally released in Japan, as Seiken Densetsu 2, in 1993. It came to the Wii Virtual Console in Japan in 2008, and the Wii U Virtual Console in 2013, and then again in 2017 on the Super NES Classic Edition. A full 3D remake for PlayStation 4, Vita, and PC was announced last August, set for release on February 15, and now, as the big day looms, it's on Steam with a $40/£30/€40 price tag and some system requirements.  It will surely come as no surprise that you won't need especially high-end hardware to rock this boat. (Apparently this was an issue in the original release.) It will also offer a "brand new rearranged soundtrack" alongside the original, and the option to switch between them at will, and new "interlude episodes" featuring interactions between Randi and his new friends, a game log that tracks the progress of the story, Steam achievements, trading cards, and partial controller support. Co-op multiplayer - one of the main things we’ve been asked since we announced the remake is whether or not co-op would return, and I’m glad to announce that yes, it will! The Secret of Mana remake will let you play offline multiplayer co-op with up to two other players, so get your friends together! Multiplayer update – we’re not just adding multiplayer, but actually improving it too – now when one player casts magic all other players will be able to continue playing, without having to wait. The music – the Secret of Mana remake is going to come with a brand new rearranged soundtrack, but for those of you who loved the original (or just want a trip down memory lane) we’re going to include the soundtrack from the original game too, and most importantly, you’ll be able to switch between them whenever you like! Interlude episodes – these are brand-new to the remake and show all-new scenes and interactions between Randi and the friends he meets on his adventure. Game log – now you’ll be able to look back at Randi’s adventure to remind yourself of the story so far from the game log. If I don’t play a game for a few days I often forget what last happened, so I’m going to find this particularly useful and I hope you will too. Achievements – if you want (and manage) to take on every challenge in Secret of Mana then you’ll probably want to be able to show off how well you’ve done, and now you’ll be able to! These are just some of the features being added to the Secret of Mana remake and I hope you’re looking forward to the game when it releases on the 15th of February.
