The 1990s were a good time for videogame gore. If you really wanted to see some spinal cords being removed, games had you covered. Two year after Mortal Kombat and one year after Doom, Rise of the Triad was a particularly memorable example of the artform that is making red stuff coming out of people in entertaining ways. Apogee had been working on a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D when the project was canceled, leaving them with a bunch of first-person shooter assets. They built Rise of the Triad on those bones (and it was later renamed Rise of the Triad: Dark War to differentiate it from the remake). Apogee improved on Wolfenstein in a bunch of ways, especially with the scale of their game's destructibility. Glass shattered, bulletholes persisted, and various bits of level scenery like plants and lights broke. The most impressive destruction was that visited on the enemies, who popped into red smears. Hit them with a rocket and they were reduced to spinning offal: an eyeball; a severed hand that gave the finger as it passed; a skull with some of that attached spinal cord the '90s was all about. Accompanying this carnage was the message "Ludicrous Gibs!" because 'gibs' was apparently short for giblets at Apogee. This bit of internal studio slang would go on to be referenced by Quake and become a lasting bit of videogame lore. It may not seem like much today, but the first time an eyeball slid down your screen it was pretty special. What a time to be alive. And no, that's not quite as exciting as a new game, but Dave Oshry, Rise of the Triad's principal director and marketing dude, says there's more to come in the future. "We've got a list of things we want to do, things we're working on and things that may or may not happen," he said. "I don't want to promise anything (because that's never a good idea in game development) but we're 100 percent committed to continuing to add features, content, tweaks and value to the ROTT reboot this year and continuing to reward the people who pre-ordered the game or were there playing with us on day one." Longer term, he said the studio is aiming to release a "Ludicrous Edition" of the game that will collect everything—the Rise of the Triad remake, the soundtrack, the original 1995 release, the Extreme ROTT map pack, and whatever else it comes up with—into a single package. "And want to give that to people who pre-ordered the game for free, as a reward for being part of the ROTT community," Oshry said. "They've been getting weird with us for two years now and some of them have been fans of all things ROTT for 20 years now. It's a fun IP to be a part of." As for the soundtrack, it contains 30 tracks composed by Andrew Hulshult, with inspirational titles like "Suck This," "Run Like Smeg," "I Choose the Stairs," "M-M-M-Menu," and, "OWW." Only about 20 of the tracks are actually in Rise of the Triad, but all of them will be remastered and added to the game in a future update. So it's exciting that something Rise of the Triad related is being teased. I'd speculate that it's a sequel, but that's just a guess. The tease comes via the official Rise of the Triad Twitter account, which tweeted the above image, a link to a YouTube video, as well as the text "soon" and "please stand by... your bazookas". The video is embedded below, and features the above image soundtracked by what I'm guessing is music from the forthcoming game. It's a good time for a new Rise of the Triad: fast-paced, twitch-oriented shooters are definitely making a comeback, especially with a new Doom looming on the horizon. Starting the launcher for the first time will take some time, as it needs to collect some data about your subscriptions. Also fixed a bug regarding a lot of sound files in temporary directories - it was extracting some files to random directories for no reason. This shouldn't happen anymore. Enjoy the new patch!
