Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality

What PC Gamer's editors played over the holidayJan 2, 2018 - PC GamerTim Clark: Simulacra   Look, I'm nothing if not entirely predictable, so to the surprise of absolutely nobody, least of all myself , I failed to catch up on Assassin's Creed: Origins. To be fair I did boot it up and made it through a couple of missions, but as I saw its vast sandy expanse stretching away into the distance, I felt the clarion call of my old favourites. And so most of the break was spent grinding Destiny 2 for masterworks weapons, of which I now have an indecent amount , but somehow still no raid hand cannon. I also managed to crank out a successful Hearthstone Dungeon Run with every remaining class, thereby earning the card back. Shaman was the last to fall, and finally got over the line last night—but only after I started auto-quitting unless I was able to get the 'double Battlecry' passive buff and a decent batch of Jade cards. In at least a slight change of pace, I did play most of my games on a laptop this Christmas, a gift from my family and myself to myself. Being able to plug the 1070-equipped ASUS into the bedroom TV and enjoy Destiny 2 at 1080p/60fps made for an illicit pleasure and long lie-ins. (I also ended up buying a wireless adapter and charging pack for the Elite controller.) And at least I managed to play one entirely new game stuff on the laptop. Inspired by Hannah Dwan's retrospective on 2017's best visual novels , I picked up Simulacra and finished it over the course of a couple of nights on the sofa with my other half. This was the first 'missing phone' game I'd tried, and I loved the mix of stalker-themed Tinder mystery with weirder supernatural trappings. Creeping around the emails, Twitter account and chat logs of a girl who has disappeared becomes propulsively dramatic when a blizzard of new notifications start popping up. Simulacra doesn't quite stick the ending, but as a self-contained mystery it was still a great way to spend a few hours. You can pick it up on Steam in the Christmas sale right now at 30% off. Steven Messner: Path of Exile I had great, ambitious plans for this holiday break. With a back catalogue of games that had grown considerably over 2017, I was looking forward to making a big dent while sipping rum and eggnog in my underwear. I was going to finally wrap up Persona 5. I was going to try out PUBG’s new desert map. I was going to shovel the walks like a good neighbour should. And then I logged back into Path of Exile to give the new seasonal league a quick taste. I fell in love with the free-to-play ARPG back in September with its Fall of Oriath expansion, but I was curious about seeing how it had grown since then. Nearly two weeks later, I’m looking back at my holiday break in despair. Where the hell did it go? I clocked in over 60 hours an average of five a day (though I m ashamed to admit there were a few days where it was much more). Path of Exile consumed me. It’s been years since a game has ...Making Eye Contact In VRSep 6, 2017 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunThey say eyes are the windows to the soul. At the very least, eye contact is one of the most intimate forms of connection two people can make with their underwear on. Valve spent a fortune ensuring that looking into Alyx Vance’s eyes wouldn’t be robotic and awkward. A big reason for Vampire: Bloodlines’ characters being so successful is that they, likewise, hook you in the eyes and refuse to let go. Of course, being a horror game, some of them would probably rather be doing it with a fish-hook. In virtual reality, eye-contact becomes code for ‘alive’. It’s worth it.  You play a mute Morty clone: disposable, disrespected, and extremely fragile. While Rick and the real Morty head out on their adventures, you play support from homebase in Rick’s garage workshop, performing errands and incomprehensible tasks to keep them on their destructive course. Justin Roiland returns to voice Rick and Morty, and during a few cameo appearances the original cast also shows up. And thank goodness, because the few new side characters sound like they're trying too hard to mimic the endearing improv stutter Roiland is known for. It doesn't represent the show at its best, but gets by on other charms.  From Owlchemy Labs, the team that developed Job Simulator, RIck and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality takes the wacky VR physics playpen genre a few steps further, using weird objects to solve even weirder, albeit simple, puzzles. 999 lives  When Rick asks me to do his laundry I’m not in the mood. I just got done doing real laundry last night, and let me tell you, if you’ve never done laundry, it’s not bad. But it’s also not good. It’s nothing, and that’s what death is. Laundry gets sidetracked by some hijinks, and Rick and Morty take off. They give me a high-tech watch in case we need to get in touch, which you can look at for objectives or hints, but I ignore it for now and poke around the workshop. I may be a clone, but that doesn’t mean I’m not driven by the pursuit of knowledge, so I form a hypothesis and test it out. Well I’ll be, it worked! Slamming a spiked mace into your head is deadly. Death isn’t a big deal though. Repeatedly smashing most objects in the workshop into your head makes a nice squishing sound and also kills you, but there are plenty of more creative ways to die in Virtual Rick-ality. Finding them is its own voluntary challenge. In death, I wake up in purgatory, a void with a tally and a baffled man on the other line. He thinks processing clone deaths is a big waste of his time. I press the button and warp back into existence, a convenience of being a clone, but I’ll chat with the man on the phone, often. A strange contraption catches my eye on Rick’s workbench, so I teleport over to play with it. Without thinking, which comes naturally to me, I grab two objects and press the button. It combines the properties of the hammer with the crystal, producing a crystal hammer. I form another hypothesis. My hypothesis was correct, again. It’s not just a novel tool either. There are several points throughout the game where I need to combine items to solve simple puzzles, like restoring a lightbulb or supersizing a snack for ...Now Available on Steam - Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-alityApr 20, 2017 - Product ReleaseRick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is Now Available on Steam! Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality smashes together the absolute VR chaos of the award-winning Job Simulator with the ridiculous, all-out, take-no-prisoners comedy of Rick and Morty. Ricky and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality blazing to 20/4Apr 13, 2017 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunRick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality comes out next weekApr 12, 2017 - PC GamerJob Simulator studio Owlchemy Labs announced last year that it was working in partnership with Adult Swim Games on Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality, a VR journey into the world of a strange mad scientist and his tremulous grandson. Details were light, but Owlchemy said it would blend "the absolute VR chaos" of Job Simulator "with the ridiculous, all-out, take-no-prisoners comedy of Rick and Morty." Now we can a better idea of what's in store, thanks to its appearance today on Steam, and the announcement of an April 20 release date. There's actually not a lot of information to be had from the listing. Players will "probe, prod, throw, and smash iconic items like the Plumbus," and apparently there's a thing of some sort in it. You can walk around rooms and through portals and fake doors, and get yelled at by Rick. You can also smack Rick in the face, if the situation warrants.  "Experience life as a clone of Morty and all the trauma that comes with it," it says. "Step through portals to strange worlds, help Rick with his bizarre experiments, and use your hands in VR to pick up and play in an interaction-filled 3D Rick-ality. Follow Rick's directions (or don't!) to solve puzzles and complete missions in this fully voice acted adventure."  Somewhat more usefully, we've also got the minimum system requirements:   * OS: Windows 7 SP1 or newer; * CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 equivalent or greater; * RAM: 4GB; * Video: GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon RX 480; Naturally, you'll also need a VR headset to play: Both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift are supported. And now, some screens.
