Whereas RE2 felt like a comprehensive reimagining of a classic survival horror, building on all the strongest areas, bulking out and improving the weaker parts, and successfully filling every gap from the original, RE3 Remake was shorter, narrower, and generally less 'content rich' than its 1999 namesake. For some, it understandably felt like a mid-effort cash grab; Capcom trying to quickly capitalize on the success of Resident Evil 2. But I think Resident Evil 3 Remake is much more than this, and that it's a smart, economic, and modern recreation of the weakest game in the original trilogy. It's better for the material that it cuts out, and has easily the best central characters and dialogue of any RE game. Developer and publisher Capcom has announced in a press release that the remake of its classic survival-horror game has now shifted more than five million copies. The new figure is for sales worldwide, across all platforms (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC). It's an impressive feat for the game, with five million sales keeping Resident Evil 3 just outside of the top ten in Capcom's list of its best-selling games. When the list was last updated in late December 2021, the RE3 remake was sitting in the number 12 spot, having sold 4.9 million copies as of that time. That put it just behind the original 1998 Resident Evil 2 at that time, and ahead of 2010's Monster Hunter Freedom 3, though it's probably safe to assume that it'll have nudged past RE2 with this new milestone. While five million sales in under two years is a strong performance, it's somewhat dwarfed by some of the other huge hits in the long-running series so far. 2017's Resident Evil 7, for example, is currently Capcom's second-best selling game of all time according to the list, having shifted 10.6 million copies as of December 2021. The horror game no longer has a limited on the amount of PCs that can activate it through an account. The change hasn't been officially announced by developer Capcom, but rather comes from the SteamDB change-log. The latest update, from October 1, reads "Removed 3rd-Party DRM - Denuvo Anti-tamper, 5 different PC within a day machine activation limit". It's unclear what, if any, specific issues precipitated this move, but given the ways Denuvo's been known to interfere with performance it's not unlikely some very noticeable game-altering quirk made it untenable. Resident Evil 3 has dropped the software less than a year after Resident Evil 2 did it, which followed Resident Evil 7 cutting the package loose, and the survival games are part of a growing list that includes some of the best games around. Prey, Doom Eternal, and Devil May Cry 5 also got rid of it this year, and Batman: Arkham Knight, The Surge 2, and Hitman 2 removed the DRM add-on last year.
