True facts about beans: further cowboy adventures in Red Dead Redemption 2Jan 23, 2020 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun Nate took some of RPS on a delightful romp around Red Dead Redemption 2, and is sharing it with you this week in three different videos. He is calling this short series Rowdy Partner. This is the third and final part. All good things must come to an end. Fortunately for our souls, this maxim also applies to the adventures of disgusting Cowboys. After beasting herons, strangling cops, and drowning in swamps during what became the very darkest segment of the RPS Christmas livestream, it was finally time to hang up my snake-wrecking boots, drink my last tin of poorly-preserved, lukewarm peaches, and log out of Red Dead Redemption 2. But before that, a change of pace. I can’t help but feel that, after the sinus-bursting, turtle-stabbing atrocities of the last two episodes of Rowdy Pardner, you have deserved a little respite at the end of your journey. And so, in this last of our series of three short documentary films, we’re going to focus our hearts not on the business of fists, but on the matters of the mind. So put on your learnin’ chaps, load your sixshooter with thought-slugs, and let’s mosey on down to the education saloon – for it is time to reveal some True Cowboy Facts. If you are lucky, you may even experience the Cowboy looking directly through your screen and speaking them to you. He is calling this short series Rowdy Partner. This is part two. Smash cut to: the vile, spluttering face of the Cowboy, who is drowning in a swamp. As his strength gives out and his legs stop kicking, those craggy features slip at last below the surface, turning sepia in the murk before vanishing entirely. A shaking hand, still crusted with alligator blood, claws for the sky as it follows him under. Then he is gone. His only memorial is a trio of bubbles, that wobble to the surface and burst in a puff of whiskey vapour. He died, apparently, because he could not take cocaine while swimming. Howdy folks! It s time for the second episode in this series of short films following my adventures through the grim darkness of Red Dead Redemption 2, as I led Matthew and Dave into Cowboy Purgatory during the RPS Christmas livestream. Last time, we went on what was billed as a nature tour, but which rapidly descended into a one-man mass extinction, despite my best intentions going in. This time, we’re headed to the Big City. (more…) Annihilating animals in Red Dead Redemption 2 a video adventureJan 21, 2020 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun Nate took some of RPS on a delightful romp around Red Dead Redemption 2, and is sharing it with you this week in three different videos. He is calling this short series Rowdy Partner. This is part one. Just before Christmas, the RPS Treehouse got together for a marathon livestream to raise money for the British Red Cross. There was a Nidhogg tournament, a session of Blindfolded Hitman 2, and even a thrilling bout of competitive MS Paint. My role in all of this, however, was a bit more rustic. I was summoned from my homestead in the Wild West Midlands, armed only with a head full of dreams and a saddlebag full of tinned peaches, to play some good ol Red Dead Redemption 2. It all started so wholesomely. The Cowboy Game (to call it by its true name) is famed for its obsessively recreated Western landscapes – and for the legions of beautifully modelled critters and varmints which populate them. And since you can t say Nature without also saying Nate , Video Sheriff Matthew thought I d be the perfect guide for a nice, relaxing wildlife tour through this digital wilderness. Alas, no plan survives contact with the Cowboy, and soon enough, the only nature involved was the cry of Nate, ur treating that alligator horribly , from horrified observer Alice Liguori. According to think thank TaxWatch, the figure, which is believed to relate to development of a new Grand Theft Auto game, means that Rockstar North has now claimed a total of 80m in UK Video Games Tax Relief, equating to a quarter of all relief claimed since the government scheme launched in 2014 following extensive industry lobbying. It also means, as per TaxWatch's report, that Rockstar has paid no Corporation Tax for the fourth year running in the UK, despite the developer's GTA5 having amassed more than an estimated $6bn USD in sales since releasing in 2014. This is our weekly series where we sprinkle some love on the overlooked parts of games. We've talked about potions, caves, hands, shops, hubs, maps, mountains and many more. There's a Five of the Best archive if you fancy a butcher's. Snow! I wonder about snow. Hardly any falls where I live so whenever it does, everyone gets very excited for it. The ugly grey concrete we see every day is hidden under a fluffy white blanket, as if to say, "Don't worry about all that stuff, unless of course you walk into it, but go out and do something else instead. Be with friends! Be with family! The trains don't bloody work anyway." So the country grinds to a halt and we all rush outside to slide down hills on sledges, baking trays, dustbin lids, plastic bags - anything we can find. There's no thought for safety as people plummet down, careering into people walking up - I once saw someone perform a whole impromptu somersault - and we all return home at the end of the day with bruises and a spot of hypothermia. It's a great day out. So when I see snow in a video game, the same butterflies of excitement flutter around inside me. But I wonder, is it the same for those of you who live where it snows a lot? You must see so much you are sick of the sight of it. Do you like snow in games or does it give you nightmares? Do let me know! What if Arthur Morgan were a firebender? Or had skills more commonly found at a D&D table? What if he just emitted light like some deep sea fish? The RDR2 modding scene is still getting on its feet but creators have done plenty of silly things like swapping Arthur with animals . One modder in particular keeps giving Arthur various superpowers. (more…) Moonshining is Red Dead Online's best update yet, but the cost of content is starting to hurtDec 16, 2019 - EurogamerSince we last spoke, Red Dead Online has made the move to PC, and with the Moonshiners update has finally caught up to its console counterpart, wrangling it into submission with its 4K 60FPS lasso. This fancy new patch grafts in the second season of the much-loved Outlaw Pass, a new wardrobe worth of cosmetics and a brand new Frontier Pursuit to pursue in Moonshining, which introduces property ownership and a separate five-mission narrative. A lot to dig into then! The boozehound business model is the main focus, and as you kickstart the new role you're introduced to the baroness of shine, Maggie Fike, a woman scorned and left to fry in a burning shack by federal tax agents. You're tasked with reclaiming her extremely illegal operation and seeking revenge against a trio of bad blokes. It might sound familiar if you've played through Online's main story: a long-winded redemption song spearheaded by Jessica McClerk, the woman who broke your green behind out of Sisika penitentiary in the opening so you could avenge her dead husband. Even so, this side story comfortably overshadows that arc across five meaty missions that ply the player with a refreshing approach to Red Dead mission design. Most importantly, the objectives in Fike's campaign don't so quickly dissolve into dissatisfying combat arenas. Team up with an infamous distiller to start your own Moonshining business and run it out of the new Shack property. Moonshining takes your Trader skills to the next level and gives you your first business established outside of camp. Not only will you need to source ingredients and produce the goods, savvy Moonshiners will learn the demands of the market and time their shipments to align with the tastes of buyers. With that in mind, Moonshining requires you to have cut your teeth as a Trader, having attained either at least Rank 5 or completed one Trader Sell Mission. Once that’s been achieved, Cripps will get you connected with Maggie Fike at Emerald Ranch, an old hand in the bootlegging business that will help you get your fledgling operation rolling. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36260268/ceb4e9b0951016bd3830bd31b2409288a33c3222.jpg To run a proper shine trade – not some backwoods Lemoyne Raiders operation – you’ll need a property. Throw in with Maggie to purchase one of five Moonshining Shacks from which you’ll conduct your business. Once you’ve sourced your cook and equipment, Maggie will maintain the homestead’s front upstairs while the art of distillation takes place downstairs. The basement has room for optional expansions including a Bar, space for a band and a dancefloor, with additional upgrades for your moonshining equipment. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36260268/e363f03e2f30715bcf91d44b8cddeae55e82762d.jpg Your mercantile journey will also offer a new series of Story Missions to take on solo or with your Posse, as Maggie Fike helps you build your business and gets a little revenge of her own along the way. A...Red Dead Online starts brewing moonshine todayDec 13, 2019 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun Oh sure the dream of the dying wild west is grand and all, but Red Dead Online now offers players a grander dream: being Veronica Lodge off Riverdale. Rockstar today launched the Moonshiners Update, letting players start their own hooch business and build up to running a speakeasy. Get a pal to pretend to be Archie, running around beating up criminals. Another mate’s cutting about as Veronica, quietly offing people with her serial killer genes. Just don’t let yourself be someone else’s Reggie. Oh! Right, moonshining. Yes. It’s from the same developers who made Grand Theft Auto V Online’s FiveM mod, the backdoor responsible for those Twitch-ruling GTA streams where people roleplay as cops, criminals, communists, and more. The prospect of expanding Rockstar’s Wild West in a similar fashion is pretty exciting. (more…) The adventures of Saucer Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2's Playground modDec 12, 2019 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunNo one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences sillier than man’s and yet immortal unlike his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were being eyed up by an idiot with a spaceship. An intellect vast and cool and curious about the functionality of his animal gun , slapdashedly drawing his plans against us. He hovered over Saint Denis, fingers poised above the Red Dead Redemption 2 Playground mod – a big box of toys and gravity effects, ready to be unleashed on the unsuspecting populace. (more…) Red Dead Redemption 2's Steam launch has not gone smoothlyDec 6, 2019 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun After one bad launch for Red Dead Redemption 2 with its PC debut on Rockstar and Epic’s stores in November, I had thought Rockstar might make the most of the second chance for a smooth launch presented by its belated Steam release last night. They have not. Along with the crashing and performance issues still suffered by all players, the Steam release seems to have even developed new issues. It’s also more clear quite how common the old issues are, now the game is on a store which has user reviews. Oh dear. America, 1899. The end of the wild west era has begun. After a robbery goes badly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee. With federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, the gang must rob, steal and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive. As deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, Arthur must make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him. With all new graphical and technical enhancements for deeper immersion, Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC takes full advantage of the power of the PC to bring every corner of this massive, rich and detailed world to life including increased draw distances; higher quality global illumination and ambient occlusion for improved day and night lighting; improved reflections and deeper, higher resolution shadows at all distances; tessellated tree textures and improved grass and fur textures for added realism in every plant and animal. Mexico has been hiding in Red Dead Redemption 2 all this timeDec 4, 2019 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunRed Dead Redemption 2 is allegedly an action game about a gun-slingin’ guy named Arthur Morgan but to many of us it’s become an Old West simulator where we can live the simple life hunting game and looking at trees unbothered by society. Exploration is king in RDR2 but the one place we can’t explore is a place we took for granted in the previous game: Mexico. I want to be a trader and collector and bounty hunter all at the same time. Rockstar are now adding a fourth Frontier Pursuit so that I can sell moonshine and own a speakeasy the real American Dream. (more…) Red Dead Online's getting boozy with a Moonshiner roleDec 3, 2019 - EurogamerAt the end of a long day of trading, all I ever want to do is return to camp, put my feet up and have a strong drink. If you want boozing to be your day job, however, you'll soon be able to do that too - as Red Dead Online is introducing a new specialist role called the Moonshiner. Starting December 13th, those who take up the Moonshiner role will be able to establish their own bootlegging business. Gameplay will revolve around "perfecting distillation methods, avoiding the law, and putting rival peddlers out of business", with successful Moonshiners able to open a speakeasy. Along with operating the business, the Moonshiner role comes with new story missions surrounding infamous bootlegger Maggie Fike. There are currently three other specialist roles in Red Dead Online - Trader, Bounty Hunter and Collector - which provide additional gameplay missions and unlockable items. The catch is they require a pretty penny to unlock, and to purchase a role outright, you have to buy a pack of 25 gold bars ( 8.99) to get the 15 required. You can earn gold nuggets through gameplay to make up gold bars in Red Dead Online, but you'll probably end up looking like Maggie before you've reached that point. Read more Red Dead Redemption 2 fixes even more crashesDec 2, 2019 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunLife in the West has been difficult on PC mostly because I keep steering my horse into NPCs by accident and starting an unintended dog pile of humans and horses. On the upshot, I haven’t personally had any issues with Red Dead Redemption 2 itself crashing, just my horse. Plenty of other players have though and Rockstar’s new update for PC players today aims to fix even more persistent stability issues. (more…) Red Dead Redemption 2 mod lets you smite foes with terrifying Thor lightningDec 2, 2019 - EurogamerLightning never strikes the same place twice - unless you're Arthur Morgan with Thor powers, that is. After tiny cowboys, nude ranchers and flying as an eagle, the latest in ridiculous Red Dead Redemption 2 PC modding is a tool which lets you rain lightning bolts on unsuspecting citizens. Using the Alexander Blade scripthook, B4M5's version of the NativeTrainer allows players to summon lightning bolts from a distance of 15 metres, bringing yet more carnage to the west. It's available on Nexus Mods, but requires a third-party download and some file tinkering to get working. There are two versions of the mod - the latest of which apparently allows you to direct the lightning more accurately as a gun - but unfortunately this version didn't work for me, so I stuck with the original. After downloading the scripthook and trainer, then enabling "powerful weapons" in the trainer menu (using F5 then navigating by holding control), you can summon electricity with the F1 button - and watch the carnage unfold. It was always due to mosey on over, of course, but like a fine wine, it needed time to breath (and satisfy exclusivity arrangements).
