(Which, for the record, I liked quite a lot too.) But I was always baffled by the decision to reuse the title. Developer Arkane was explicit that its game was not a sequel or a remake, and had "no tie with the original," and it's not as though the 2006 game was such a smash hit that it carried immutable PR value... This time around, it's Prey, the 2017 horror game from Arkane Studios, that's losing the DRM system. Announcement of the patch came on Reddit, where it was revealed the update was due to arrive this week, but has been delayed. "Today we planned to perform a backend deployment for Prey in order to remove Denuvo, but some of you may have seen a 16GB or 4GB update instead," community manager Abigail Tyson wrote in the thread. "We've rolled back this deployment, so you should no longer have any large updates for Prey or Prey: Mooncrash. The update to remove Denuvo will still be deployed, but at a later date." Although the response to this is generally positive, some commenters feel it should've happened sooner, since Prey has been available on GOG DRM free for sometime now. Steam is the only storefront that the FPS game is tied to the anti-piracy software, and just as in Devil May Cry 5, there's noticeable performance issues between versions with Denuvo and those without. In its place is Roundhouse Studios - a new company owned by Bethesda. All Human Head employees were offered a job at Roundhouse as part of the transition, Bethesda has said. Today's press release from Bethesda does not go into detail on what became of Human Head in its final days, although a farewell blog update from Human Head itself blamed "economic realities". The team had just finished working on Norse action role-player Rune 2, which arrived with little fanfare on the Epic Games Store for PC yesterday. Read more Prey 2 audio logs reveal more of the cancelled game's storyAug 13, 2019 - PC GamerPrey 2 is one of the cancelled games I think about the most. That trailer was enough to build up a lot of anticipation and dreams of being a bounty hunter on an alien planet. Instead we got the excellent but dramatically different Prey from Arkane. We'll never be able to play Prey 2, but now we can listen to some audio logs.  Uploaded by Andrew Borman, Museum of Play's digital games curator, the logs are all from the perspective of protagonist Killian Samuels, but all of them relate to his predecessor, Tommy. Some story details were reported in 2017 that made it clear Tommy was a big part of the sequel, and these logs give us a bit more background about their relationship. Give them a listen below.  As the only humans on Exodus, the pair team up escape the city and stick to the alien villains that go around the galaxy gobbling everything up. Tommy might have made some enemies in the first game when he destroyed their ship. To be fair, they were trying to enslave humanity.  Like most audio logs, they're exposition dumps that aren't that exciting to listen to, but as an artefact from a lost game, they're a bit more interesting. Arkane's Prey kept nothing from this version and doesn't continue the story, so the adventures of Tommy will have to remain a loose end.  Last year, Borman posted a clip sent to him by Human Head, showing off nearly a minute of Prey 2 footage. It's loud, very neon and it's a shame we never got to take it for a spin. Prey's Typhon Hunter multiplayer mode is very bare bonesDec 12, 2018 - PC GamerPrey’s multiplayer mode, Typhon Hunter, sounds like a perfect fit for the paranoia-inducing FPS. Launched yesterday, it puts one player in the shoes of Morgan, while three other players get to be mimics, using their shapeshifting abilities to hide from the gun-toting scientist. Unfortunately, players are reporting lots of issues.  Typhon Hunter was originally due out in the summer but it was delayed for six months. Despite the extended development time, it still seems bare bones, missing things like a tutorial, basic PC options or proper matchmaking. One problem that keeps cropping up in user reviews is the poor communication options. You can’t turn off voice chat, you can’t mute other players and there’s no text chat. Being forced to listen to someone yelling in your ear for an entire match is certainly one way to build tension, but it’s the wrong kind.  While Prey was developed using the CryEngine, Typhon Hunter is an Unreal Engine game, and for some reason graphics and display options haven’t been brought over in the switch. Graphics settings are limited to four presets—ultra, high, medium and low—while support for ultrawide monitors also seems to have been lost. You also won’t be able to rebind your keys. It doesn’t address all the problems, but playing with bots or in a custom game with pals at least lets you avoid listening to screaming strangers or hissing mics. The update also includes a singleplayer VR puzzle campaign set in Talos I before the events of the main game. VR multiplayer is in the works, too, due out early next year. Typhon Hunter is a free update for everyone with the Mooncrash DLC. Prey: Mooncrash multiplayer update will go live next weekDec 6, 2018 - PC GamerThe Prey: Mooncrash multiplayer mode that Bethesda said would be out this summer will actually arrive on December 11 in a free update called Typhon Hunter. The asymmetric mode is much like a game of hide-and-seek, in which one player takes on the role of Morgan Yu and up to five others become Mimics capable of changing their appearance to that of mundane objects, enabling them to hide in plain sight.  The big difference between this and conventional games of hide-and-seek, in case it's not clear, is that when you spot a hidden opponent, they're probably going to try to murder you, and so you need to off them before it happens. Hey, everything is higher-stakes on the moon.  The tension will come from the hunt, and the uncertainty of whether that garbage can you're staring at is a murderous alien from another dimension, or just a garbage can. As explained on Bethesda.net, Mimics will have a brief period of time to prepare themselves for the match, after which the action begins and they can either try to take Morgan out or stay hidden and hope to wait out the clock.  Mimics aren't very effective in combat, though, and while Morgan will respawn if he's killed, the Mimics will not. The potential problem I envision is that no matter which way it goes, it's going to be a dull-as-hell experience for Mimics: You either set yourself up as the aforementioned garbage can in an out-of-the-way corner and then go get a sandwich, or you take your shot at Morgan, probably get offed, and then you're out. Teamwork between Mimics could tip the scales, but the likelihood of that happening with any consistency is not something I have much confidence in when it comes to pick-up multiplayer games.  The mode might be fun to play around with, but I don't see it having much endurance—or, to be frank, adding any real value to the fundamentally singleplayer Prey experience. Never mind my pessimism, though: The update is free so there's no reason not to try it, and maybe it'll be far cooler and more durable than I expect.  For those equipped with VR headsets, the update also adds a new VR-only "escape room" campaign called TranStar VR, in which you'll "complete objectives and solve intricate puzzles" in Talos 1 locations including Morgan's office, the Sim Labs, and the Yellow Tulip, just ahead of the events of Prey. The mode also features a VR version of the TranStar Museum in the Talos 1 lobby, with an "up-close-and-personal look at some of the most memorable props from the game," and an interactive tour and history of the Talos 1 station.  Prey: Mooncrash – Typhon Hunter Coming December 11Dec 6, 2018 - Community AnnouncementsTyphon Hunter, the free multiplayer update to Prey: Mooncrash, will be available on December 11! It's a tribute to some of Arkane's favorite games in the indie roguelike/roguelite/general permadeath space, adding new operator skins themed on Darkest Dungeon, Dead Cells, Spelunky, Don't Starve, Rogue Legacy, and Risk of Rain. In a nice touch they've also shared a blog post in which members of the team talk about each game and why they love them, and in some cases how they served as inspiration for Mooncrash. Thanks, RPS. As well as the ending itself, the build-up to it has come under criticism for being drawn-out, and introducing too many security bots. Colantonio told Kotaku that, "In this case, yeah there was definitely too much at the end, it was too intense, not only the security bots but there was some other stuff. In general, I think it was too intense, we were trying to ask the players to backtrack, and do some stuff. It was just too much. We should have cut it short." As for why the ending turned out that way, he offered this explanation: "I think we did our best as far as planning — we thought on paper it'd be a nice change of pace toward the end, so it feels more intense and more like an acceleration as opposed to 'Here is more story.' So on paper it seemed right. "The problem is when you implement those things, even the designers can only see so much of it, because they don't see the rest of the game, they only see their part. And it’s only, believe it or not, it's only around alpha, like three months before the game ships basically that you can see the entirety of the game in a state where you can fully comprehend it." You can listen to the full interview on Kotaku's podcast. A funny thing about immersive sims is that giving players freedom to choose their own approach means it's hard to pace them for everyone. I'd maxed out the hacking ability, and so I stunned the security bots then turned them to my side. I didn't think it was badly paced at all, and loved the ending. So there you go. Bethesda's QuakeCon 2018 Steam sale has begunAug 8, 2018 - PC GamerEven though you won't be able to play Fallout 76 on Steam at launch, almost everything else in Bethesda's back catalogue is discounted on Valve's platform this weekend, just in time for QuakeCon 2018.  While I can't find a dedicated Steam page for the sale just yet, probably because it began very recently and Dead Cells is currently occupying the homepage, you can see the discounts by heading to Bethesda's publisher page on Steam and scrolling down to 'specials'. Some highlights include Prey on-sale for £10/$15, and its roguelite-style DLC Mooncrash for $15/£9.74, which is 25% off. 2016's Doom is just $10/£7.49 (Fanatical has it slightly cheaper), which is reasonable for what's probably the best singleplayer FPS of the modern age.  Fallout 4's GOTY edition is £20/$30, matching its best Steam price to date if you've somehow not played that yet. And of course, no mention of 3D Fallout games can go without also bringing up New Vegas, the vanilla edition of which is $3.29/£2.63. I paid double that for a chocolate-flavoured beer last weekend. The beer was fantastic, but New Vegas will definitely last longer. The excellent Wolfenstein 2, give or take two annoying final bosses, is $24/£16. The Elder Scrolls Online and its various expansions are also discounted, plus you can get the entire Elder Scrolls series for less, too. If, like me, you have most of those, you can instead look forward to QuakeCon itself this weekend, where we'll be getting our first look at Doom Eternal gameplaySome online stores give us a small cut if you buy something through one of our links.
