Overkill's The Walking Dead

Here are all the confirmed ray tracing and DLSS games so farSep 1, 2020 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunRay tracing is the big buzz word of 2020 in PC gaming, and more ray tracing games have just been announced during today’s big RTX 3000 reveal. To help you keep track of them all, we’ve created this list of all the confirmed ray tracing games you can play on PC right now, as well which this year’s will get ray tracing support in the future. And because ray tracing tends to go hand in hand with Nvidia’s performance-boosting DLSS tech these days, we’ve also listed all the current and upcoming games that support DLSS, too. And because ray tracing tends to go hand in hand with Nvidia’s performance-boosting DLSS tech these days, we’ve also listed all the games that support DLSS, too. (more…) All the Nvidia RTX ray tracing and DLSS games confirmed so farAug 19, 2019 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun It’s Gamescom this week, which can only mean one thing – more confirmed ray tracing games for Nvidia’s RTX and selected GTX 16-series graphics cards. Indeed, the big one that’s just been announced is Minecraft, which (like Quake II RTX) is getting full, real-time ray tracing support for everything from water reflections to its entire lighting system. That’s not all, though. Dying Light 2 will also be getting real-time ray tracing, while Tencent’s freshly-announced action survival game Synced: Off-Planet will be getting ray-traced reflections and shadow support. In truth, the number of games on this list that you can actually play with ray tracing enabled right this second is still pretty small. A lot of the confirmed RTX games you’ll see below still haven’t received their promised ray tracing and performance-boosting DLSS support, so this is more of a complete ‘this is how many games will have it eventually’ kind of thing than ‘these are all the games you can play with ray tracing right now’. Still, if you’re currently on the fence about buying one of Nvidia’s RTX or RTX Super graphics cards as opposed to the new AMD Navi GPUs, this guide should hopefully help you decide whether ray tracing is something worth investing in. Here’s every confirmed ray tracing and DLSS game we know about so far. (more…) All the Nvidia RTX ray tracing and DLSS games confirmed so farJun 11, 2019 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun The number of confirmed ray tracing games for and selected GTX graphics cards has just got a little bit longer. With E3 2019 in full swing, Nvidia have confirmed that both Watch Dogs Legion and the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will also be getting full ray tracing support, and in the case of Call of Duty, adaptive shading support as well. That ray tracing games list is still pretty small, admittedly, and the number of games you can find it in right now can almost be counted on a single hand. Indeed, a lot of confirmed RTX games are yet to receive their ray tracing and performance-boosting DLSS support, so the list below is more of a complete ‘this is how many games will have it eventually’ kind of thing than ‘these are all the games you can play with ray tracing right this very second’. Still, if you’re currently on the fence about buying one of Nvidia’s RTX 2060, RTX 2070, RTX 2080 or RTX 2080 Ti graphics cards as opposed to one of the new GPUs, this guide should hopefully help you decide whether ray tracing is something worth investing in. Here’s every confirmed ray tracing and DLSS game we know about so far. (more…) Starbreeze lays off 25% of its workforceJun 4, 2019 - PC GamerStarbreeze, the struggling publisher of games including Payday 2 and Overkill's The Walking Dead, has announced that it will lay off approximately 60 employees—roughly 25 percent of its total workforce—in an effort to reduce costs and establish long-term profitability. The company said the layoffs are expected to be "fully implemented" in November 2019.  "In the past six months we have made a number of changes to the business following our strategy to focus on the core business. We have divested some operations that we consider non-core and we now have to look inward to make the core business more efficient," Starbreeze CEO Mikael Nermark said. "To make staff reductions is a tough decision to make, but necessary to enable Starbreeze to develop well long-term."  Starbreeze has been in a "challenging financial situation," as the company put it in the announcement, since late 2018, after Overkill's The Walking Dead tanked badly. It filed for reconstruction—essentially a last-ditch effort to avoid liquidation—in December, after which its office in Stockholm was raided by Swedish authorities over allegations of insider trading. Since then it's sold off publishing rights to games including System Shock 3 and 10 Crowns, as well as a studio, Dhruva Interactive.  The layoffs are expected to reduce costs at the company by 3 million krona ($318,000) per month. Despite its efforts to stay afloat, however, Starbreeze said last month that the company won't make it another year without some form of external funding.    Big layoffs at embattled Payday studio StarbreezeJun 4, 2019 - EurogamerEmbattled Swedish studio Starbreeze has announced plans to cut 60 jobs as part of its fight to stay afloat. The company behind the Payday franchise said it took the decision "to make the organisation more efficient and reduce costs", and "to be able to operate an efficient and profitable business long-term". The layoffs, due to happen in November, will result in a saving of 3m SEK ( 250,000) a month. Starbreeze currently has 240 employees. Read more All the Nvidia RTX ray tracing and DLSS games confirmed so farMay 30, 2019 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun With the arrival of Nvidia’s new GTX ray tracing driver, the number of graphics cards that can now take advantage of the tech giant’s fancy new lighting tech has grown exponentially. In addition to the four new cards, everyone with a 6GB GTX 1060 and up can now get a taste of that ray tracing magic. Sort of. Alas, the number of confirmed ray tracing games is still pretty small. There have been a couple of new, notable additions to the list in recent months, including Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 and Wolfenstein: Youngblood, but even now the number of games you can find it in right now can be counted on a single hand. The same goes for Nvidia’s performance-boosting DLSS tech, which is still only available on the RTX 2060, RTX 2070, RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti. So I thought I’d do the hard work for you and put everything in a nice, big list, detailing every confirmed ray tracing and DLSS game we know about so far. (more…) Community Update - 28/2Feb 28, 2019 - Community AnnouncementsHello Survivors, Now this is where we’d normally present our patch-notes and a long list of fixes and additions, but due to recent events, read more here and here, we are unfortunately forced to hold off on pushing any updates until we have clarity on the situation. This also means that the 16th episode of The Walking Dev, which was scheduled for later today, has been put on hold. In the meantime, we’re continuing development so that we’ll stay on schedule should we come to an agreement. The OVERKILL team has the ambition to deliver the Season 2 content that we have promised our players. Please note that while we’d love to answer all of your questions, at this stage, we’ll have a hard time doing so until we get further clarity. We thank you for your patience while the discussions between Starbreeze and the license holder are ongoing and we apologise for the inconvenience. OVERKILL_ElisabethOverkill s The Walking Dead pulled from Steam after Skybound back outFeb 27, 2019 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunStarbreeze and Overkill Software’s awful few months just got worse, as Overkill’s The Walking Dead has been pulled from sale on Steam over a falling out between license holders. Skybound – Walking Dead rights-holders and company of series creator Robert Kirkman – announced they were terminating their contract with publisher Starbreeze. Starbreeze have since issued their own statement saying that they hope to “resolve the issue to find an amicable solution”, with hopes of returning the game to sale, and delivering the remaining planned episodic updates. (more…) Overkill's The Walking Dead removed from SteamFeb 26, 2019 - PC GamerUpdate: Starbreeze has released their own statement on the matter, explaining that the game is expected to be "removed from new purchases" on Steam, and that Starbreeze is trying to resolve the issue with Skybound so it can finish and release Season 2 of the game. "We are deeply sorry for the issues this may cause anyone who has bought the game looking forward to the resolution of Season 2 and are working urgently to attempt to resolve the issue. Please keep an eye on the official OTWD channels for further news," said Mikael Nermark, Starbreeze's acting CEO. We'll keep you updated. Original story: As we put it, Overkill's The Walking Dead was "a shambling mess" when it came out for PC late last year, a situation that appeared to take a turn from bad to worse earlier this month when the planned console versions were shelved indefinitely. Now it's gone from worse to even more worse, as Skybound Entertainment, the owner of the comic and the company that rescued Telltale's The Walking Dead, announced in no uncertain terms that it's not happy with Starbreeze, and has canceled its contract for the game.  "As of today, we have terminated our contract with Starbreeze Studios and will discontinue all efforts on Overkill's The Walking Dead," Skybound said. "Our creators and their stories are the core of Skybound, and since 2014 we have worked hard to expand the world of The Walking Dead into an exceptional Co-op Action FPS. We did our best to work with Starbreeze and resolve many issues that we saw with the game, but ultimately Overkill's The Walking Dead did not meet our standards nor is it the quality that we were promised."  "We are exceedingly sorry to our fans and share their disappointment in the game. We remain dedicated to providing our fans with the most premium quality content we can offer, and will continue to look for alternative video game options for the IP."  It's not clear how this will impact the development of future patches—the most recent came out a couple weeks ago—but it's another blow that Starbreeze can ill afford. The company recently made moves to restructure in order to avoid bankruptcy while simultaneously dealing with allegations of insider trading, and earlier this month it sold the publishing rights to System Shock 3 back to developer OtherSide Entertainment.    Unsurprisingly given all that, it also sounds like the studio has been dealing with morale problems for awhile: In January, a developer on Overkill's The Walking Dead said that everyone working on the game "knew it was going to tank," and that "no matter how much you polish a turd, it's still a turd."  I've reached out to Starbreeze for comment and will update if I receive a reply.  Skybound cancels all versions of troubled Overkill's The Walking DeadFeb 26, 2019 - EurogamerUPDATE 27 FEBRUARY 2019: Starbreeze has said Overkill's The Walking Dead will be removed from Steam "within a near future". It added it's in talks with Skybound to try to find a way for the embattled company to release season two of the game, which had been promised to players and indeed had been included with the Deluxe version of the game. "We are deeply sorry for the issues this may cause anyone who has bought the game looking forward to the resolution of Season 2 and are working urgently to attempt to resolve the issue," said acting Starbreeze CEO Mikael Nermark. "Please keep an eye on the official OTWD channels for further news." But not all games can do both things at the same time, and many more still have no confirmed support for ray tracing and DLSS at all. So I thought I’d do the hard work for you and put everything in a nice, big list, detailing every ray tracing and DLSS game confirmed so far. The list is still quite small at the moment, but if you’re thinking about upgrading to either the RTX 2060, RTX 2070, RTX 2080 or RTX 2080 Ti, then these are the games that are going to get the most out of them. OVERKILL_ElisabethOne Overkill s The Walking Dead developer says they 'knew it was going to tank'Jan 28, 2019 - PC GamerOverkill’s The Walking Dead was one of 2018’s flops, selling just a few hundred thousand copies when it was expected to sell millions, a failure that forced its publisher Starbreeze into effective administration. Now, Eurogamer has published an in-depth feature that says some designers on the project were fully aware of the game’s problems well before release, but were not given appropriate time to fix them. "Everyone knew it was going to tank," said one developer (all of Eurogamer’s sources wished to remain anonymous). "No matter how much you polish a turd, it's still a turd. It was never going to get any better than where it was. It was always hacked." Originally scheduled for a 2016 release, Overkill’s The Walking Dead was initially designed using a new in-house engine called Valhalla. But, as Eurogamer report, the engine was "near unusable", little more than a graphics renderer. This massively slowed down the game’s production, until eventually Overkill and Starbreeze moved the project onto Unreal Engine 4.  By this point, however, the game was already several years into development. With Starbreeze reluctant to push the release beyond 2018, Overkill's designers were essentially forced to turn the game around from scratch in eighteen months, using an engine that only "10%" of the design team had any familiarity with. "It's a beta game because we made it in a year-and-a-half," one source explains. While The Walking Dead was key to Starbreeze's recent troubles, it wasn't alone. Eurogamer reports that while officially Overkill was acquired by Starbreeze in 2013, the reality was that, after the flop of 2012's Syndicate reboot, the struggling Starbreeze was effectively taken over by the more solvent Overkill’s core staff, most notably its founders Bo and Ulf Andersson. After the massive success of Payday 2, Ulf departed the company. Bo, meanwhile, as CEO, embarked upon a massive company expansion, investing in games like Dead by Daylight and, bizarrely Raid: World War 2, which was such a similar game to Payday that it meant Starbreeze was essentially “competing with ourselves”.  In addition, Starbreeze put a huge stake in VR, such as investing in the now-defunct Imax VR, while also purchasing Valhalla for Overkill. All of this put enormous pressure on The Walking Dead to succeed, and when it didn’t Starbreeze’s house of cards came tumbling down.  The full article is a fascinating read, and well worth diving into. Despite all this, Starbreeze is still just about struggling along, with a new CEO (Andersson has left the company) whose goals are “to improve as we move forward” and “provide a clearer framework for everyone to work within." Chances are that even if Starbreeze does recover, the emerging company will be very different to what it once was. The fall of StarbreezeJan 28, 2019 - EurogamerAt Starbreeze's 2016 Christmas meeting, held in a cinema close by to the studio's Stockholm headquarters, CEO Bo Andersson told staff the company was in rude health. Payday 2, a co-op first-person shooter Steam hit, was still making money, virtual reality investments were about getting ahead of the game, and in-development titles, such as Raid: World War 2 and Overkill's The Walking Dead, were on course for success. Starbreeze's top brass even announced a new staff bonus system. The message was loud and clear: Starbreeze had evolved from the plucky developer of Payday into a big, important, successful entertainment company. Just two years later, Starbreeze is on the brink of extinction. Following the disastrous release of Overkill's The Walking Dead in November, Starbreeze's board of directors unceremoniously booted Andersson out of the company. In a remarkable email obtained by Eurogamer and sent to everyone at the company the day after he was fired, Andersson even seems to lament the laziness of some of his staff - the same staff who claim they had just endured months of crunch for a project that was doomed from the start. A day later, Swedish authorities raided Starbreeze's office, arresting two people as part of an investigation into alleged insider trading. Riddled with millions of pounds of debt, Starbreeze has effectively gone into administration and is looking to sell off as many of its ill-advised virtual reality ventures as possible while it still can. The future of Payday, that old reliable cash cow, is in doubt. And for the staff who remain - those who put their blood, sweat and tears into Starbreeze games even as they endured late nights and alleged mismanagement - the threat of layoffs looms. How did things go so badly wrong in such a short space of time? According to over a dozen current and former Starbreeze staff members, who asked to remain anonymous in order to protect their careers, the writing had been on the wall for some time. But even as staff lost faith in the studio and its bosses, nobody, it seemed, thought Starbreeze's fall from grace would turn out to be quite so dramatic.
