I've been quiet for a while but haven't been sitting around. As some of you might know Nira is coming to Switch, which required some performance issues to be solved. To get the game running on Switch I've rewritten parts of the world generator to spread the loading of chunks much more evenly than before. Today I'm pushing a patch with a ton of improvements to the flow and intuitiveness of the UI and menus. This might not sound very interesting but I've found that it significantly improves your player experience if you don't have to work with fiddly frustrating menus, and it leaves more time for the fun stuff. I've been struggling with UI and menu flow for as long as I can remember, but Graffiti Games really came to the rescue to help me out with this, so big shoutout to them! I've been quiet for a while, but haven't been slacking! In the past months I've been working together with a new partner to improve the game and prepare for final release. More info about this partnership will be announcent next week, but for now I'd like to share a pre-final build of Nira. Outside of localization and proper testing, this will be the full release version of Nira. To access this new patch, you need to select the 'final' branch. You can activate this branch by right clicking Nira from your library, selecting the Beta's tab and selecting the Final branch from there. The final version of Nira should then start downloading! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35949318/1ed0e977e9297557c53bb0dae1d652fd04a20b68.png The final version of the game includes an intro cutscene and adds more backstory to the game. It should make objectives more clear and give better guidance to new players, but it also has an ending! I hope this will make the entire experience more meaningful. Additionally, I've add a set of new items, including sharks swimming around, Ogre's can do more attacks, a ton of new sound effects and much more! I'm really happy with this version of the game, but having added so much new stuff to the game, I really want it to get some proper testing before we go into full release. That's why I would like to ask everyone who's interested to try this version of the game, and let me know what you think of it. Please stay tuned for next week's announcement, for which I'm really excited about. Until then, I hope you enjoy the latest patch and would love to hear your thoughts! This was quite a challenge as a ton of code broke in different places of the game all at once, and figuring out exactly where and why took a lot of time. Now that the full transfer is done I'm not planning on updating to any new engine versions soon, so this should improve update speed. With this update, the Totem can not be broken anymore by hand. Instead you can now upgrade the totem you start with. This was done in prepartion for full release, where the Totem will play a bigger role. A Totem Destroyer item was added to make sure you can still destroy the Totem if you really want to move to another location. Besides the Totem, a couple of cool new things where added such as birds, and snow, which I'm really happy with and I hope you guys will enjoy as well. Lastly, a couple more of the last remaining big bugs have been fixed. The one I have been struggling with ever since starting Nira was the blood particles. It took me a long time to figure out how to make sure they didn't clip through the player, but I finally found a way. This also means the blood splatters on the ground will never despawn (until you walk away far enough for the chunk to unload), which means you can paint the world red! The most important bug fix is one that caused boats or tamed animals to disappear over time. I've attempted to fix this bug for about 10 times before, but never managed to find the cause of the issue. This time I found it was directly related to the autosaving feature and decide to rewrite a big part of the saving feature. I've spent a full weekend testing the new saving system and did not encounter a single issue, so I hope it works as it should now! The other bugs that were fixed in this patched were caused by the engine upgrade. Moving to GameMaker Studio 2.3 was essential to maintain updates for the coming time, but sadly also caused quite some parts of the code to break. This patch should fix the majority of issues though! If you find any issues with the current patch, please do report them! There's a button in the menu to report any bugs, and it really helps improve the game. Beta v0.02.01 Date: 30-08-2020 -Fixed a bug where the camera snapped during quest completion with low draw distance -Fixed a bug where interaction with chests was broken -Fixed a bug where interaction with totems was broken -Fixed a bug where interaction with merchants -Fixed a bug that caused things like Boats, Tamed Animals and Items on the ground to despawn after (auto) saving -Fixed a memory leak while auto saving -Fixed a bug where right clicking items into chest, could duplicate them -Increased item dropping distance -Increased items spawning on land -Reduced items spawning in water -Changed patch notes pop-up to be skippable with any keySteam Achievements added!Aug 16, 2020 - Community AnnouncementsWith the addition of 20 Steam Achievements, Nira has now moved into Beta. (Read this to activate it!)Aug 5, 2020 - Community AnnouncementsThis update brings an engine upgrade to GameMaker Studio 2.3. This upgrade required quite some systems to be revamped to be optimized for this new version, which took quite some time. On the flipside, this means Nira now runs on the latest version again and is ready for future improvement!
