It's been a bit of a content drought for you all as our devs have been mostly focused on optimization and framerate issues. We've got some betas out now that people are playing with, and the results on the performance front look really encouraging. We're still tracking down a few crash issues caused by the massive code refactor, so we're not ready to release quite yet, but you should be able to play around with the new tech soon! But that's all coding. As the devs have been neck deep in the engine, I've been hard at work plotting out the design portion of the next several contents worth of NIMRODS updates so that once the refactors are done, and our devs can dedicate nearly all of their time to content again, they'll have plenty of design docs to chew through! Expect new biomes, new enemies, new augments, new chassis, and a new optional boss with mechanics that I'm sure will take most of you all by surprise! But planning for the future can only go so far. There comes a point at which you realize that you're planning so far ahead that landscape of NIMRODS might change drastically between now and then. I hit that point a few weeks back. So instead of planning out another update into the future, I pled for the precious time of one of our devs, the mysterious force known only as zzzzzz, and he charitably donated a few days to one of our most ambitious design projects yet. But before we unveil that, let's talk a little bit about the way NIMRODS was balanced. The Old Way: Previously, whenever I came up with a new augment, I would try to estimate the damage boost that augment would give using a very complicated formula, then tweak the numbers so that the estimated DPS would come out to a certain target amount. Our goal was for a tier one augment to multiply your damage by ×1.4, a tier two or three augment to multiply your damage by ×1.3, and a tier four augment to multiply your damage by ×1.45. In some cases, estimating DPS was easy. For instance, the Cryo Magazine multiplies your Bullet Damage by ×1.4. This pretty strongly suggests that if you take it, your DPS will go up by about... well... 1.4. Seems reasonable, right? Others are a little harder. What does multiplying your Fire Rate by ×1.4 do? Well, while you're firing, it might multiply your damage by ×1.4, but you're not always firing. Sometimes you're reloading. Therefore, the actual DPS boost is much lower. The DPS bonus from Fire Rate actually depends on your Reload Speed, which is different for each chassis. Short-reload weapons like the Assault Rifle benefit more from Fire Rate than slow-reloading weapons like the Hydra Minimissile Swarmer. In cases like that, we tried to balance the augments for an average-case scenario, which intentionally made fire rate better on some weapons than others. Others stats are even harder than that. It's been a while since we last shared new content with you. Recently, we published a Performance Devlog in which we discussed our plans, goals, and how we're balancing it all. Once we overcome this performance hurdle, you can look forward to more frequent and faster content updates from us. That being said, even though most of our engineers are hard at work retooling the entire game for better performance, we still have some exciting new content to share! Wombat Roll One of the drawbacks in developing an early access game is that sometimes you have to release stuff in an unfinished state that doesn't represent how you envision it working in the final game. Abilities were one example of this; we needed to have a dash for Grimm in order for the early game balancing to work right, and Vixen wouldn't be Vixen without the ability to throw molotovs, but a tight, engaging ability system was one of the things we had to cut to hit our early access target deadline. A lot of players noticed that it seemed a little... unfinished. This update is one of two major steps towards completing the ability system! First off, we have Vixen's second ability: The Wombat Roll. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44064500/2db7b9e1c8bcf5e0aa05061c734acdbafe2f3b49.gif This is a much faster reposition than Grimm's Adrenaline Rush. It's shorter range, but has one huge benefit: While rolling, your Dodge is increased by 9999, ensuring you take no damage from enemies! Grimm can speed through gaps between enemies, but Vixen doesn't need a gap: she'll tumble right through them! And at higher levels, she'll drop an explosive-filled decoy at the starting point of her roll and attach sticky bombs to any enemy she dodges through. At higher levels, you ask? That's right. The biggest part of this update is... Ability Upgrades Abilities now come in three tiers. You can level up an ability to tiers 2 and 3 by mutating its genome layout page to levels 6 and 11, respectively. Leveling up your abilities usually changes their functionality in key ways, adding greater depth and complexity to otherwise simple abilities. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/44064500/f665f7fe69f37a930ea2454a4d22712e8003af55.png Grimm's rush, at higher levels, will damage, knock away, and stun any enemy unfortunate enough to touch him. His frenzy gains a slight speed boost, but if you choose to stay still, your attack rate will skyrocket. Vixen's molotov turns into a persistent area of fire, gets a lower cooldown, a higher damage and radius, and Vixen gains a move bonus while she's in the area of the flames. This system, where you start with a weaker ability and level it up into something significantly more powerful, will be our model moving forward. Any additional character abilities we make will come in three tiers and need to be leveled up by mutating its genome layout. There's still one more piece we want to add to the ability system—the Gene Recombinator—but we've got a bit more work to do on the character system before we...NIMRODS | Performance Devlog - Every MS countsJan 24, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsGreetings, NIMRODS! Optimization has been a top priority for us ever since the demo was released. We’ve made a lot of improvements and would like to share an update with you all. To achieve smooth gameplay at 60 frames per second, each frame must render in 16.67ms or less (conversion is 1000 / 60 FPS = 16.67ms). This is our performance target for low-end machines, including the Steam Deck, which is our target platform for minimum specification (min-spec). The target remains 60 FPS or better, even during intense, end-game scenarios. To make that a reality, we have to optimize every millisecond for performance. This devlog will outline our plan for performance improvements while ensuring the content isn’t too technical. In Unity, a GameObject is a fundamental building block for making a game, most scripts & components exist on a GameObject. For example, a SpriteRenderer is a component used to display… well Sprites. While using GameObjects and Component’s work and great, they struggle to keep up when working with many thousands of them, especially when applying complex effects (like our projectile modifiers - see below) With this classic approach we quickly hit performance bottlenecks and it became clear that it wouldn’t scale to the level of chaos we envisioned. DOTS introduced a new paradigm centered on Entities, which are lightweight, data-driven objects optimized for multithreaded environments. Leveraging DOTS and Unity’s Burst Compiler (which generates high-performance low-level code) allowed us to paved a path to significant performance improvements. We're hard at work creating new content for you all to enjoy (aside from those of us working on R&D to improve performance, which is looking very promising - more word on that soon!) But while you all are waiting on the new content, we thought we'd address a few bugs and quality of life requests you've brought to our attention: Changelog Added The augment slot type is now indicated in the gun upgrade, gun inspect, and the arms dealer screens Inspecting locked augments in the gun upgrade screen will now tell you how to unlock them You can now unequip all assigned airdrops at once in the airdrop scheduler by pressing X A small toast will now appear when a drone levels up displaying what upgrade it has applied to the gun Change To Drone's Special Power When a player levels up their Special Power increases immediately and not when they collect the airdrop. Previously, the drone would level up at the same time it took an augment or tuning, only gaining Special Power when it did so. This was fine for most cases, but some players have started doing challenge runs where they never take tunings or never take augments. Even if a player doesn't collect their augment or tuning, they would still get Special Power from leveling up... but the drone made from that run wouldn't, because it previously only got Special Power when it added an augment or tuning. We've changed it so that instead of just keeping track of when the weapon gained an augment or tuning, we also keep track of when the player leveled up. That way, if a player levels up but doesn't collect their augments or tunings, the drone made from that run will still gain Special Power up to the same level the player did at the same time the player did in the run they crafted the gun. Other Changes Effects that cause bullets to explode (Explosive Ammo, Eponymous Nimrod's Barrel, RPG, Hydra Minimissle Swarmer) now stack their areas (not radius) instead of replacing each other English localization improvements French localization has drastically been improved Fixed Fixed an issue where Special Power was not being calculated correctly while using a gun in the Home Ship Fixed an issue where the hitsplats spawned by the target dummies in the home ship were displaying incorrect damage numbers Fixed an issue where Splitter Magazine and Splitter's Eggsac would overwrite each other. They now stack as intended Fixed an issue where Projectile Damage could scale out of control if two specific augments were taken together Fixed an issue that caused the Drone Scout ability to give 2.5x more Vision Range than intended Fixed an issue that prevented the Scavenger and Vandalism missions from correctly detecting completion Fixed several crashes that could occur Thank you all so much for the overwhelming support.
