Can New World win back MMO fans?Nov 28, 2021 - PCGamesNNew World is far from the picture of health at the moment. Following a hugely successful launch and a peak of over 900,000 players at the start of October, the MMO's playerbase has steadily dropped away. According to Steamcharts, New World's concurrent player count has fallen to just 10% of its peak in less than two months - and the arrival of the first big gameplay patch, which includes the new Void Gauntlet weapon, has done little to stem the exodus. On the contrary, baying Redditors and Steam reviewers amplify the chorus of disgruntled players with new posts each day. The immediate prognosis doesn't look good, and that's not for lack of intervention. The crisis response team at Amazon Game Studios has pushed out patches on a weekly basis, spun up a test server, and done a thorough job of communicating and explaining the issues they're facing; but it hasn't been enough. I played New World for hundreds of hours in its first few weeks. I helped found a thriving guild and took part in my server's community. However, when I logged on a couple of weeks ago, I found my guild in tatters: the coffers were empty and our territories had been lost. Worse still, the Discord server for my New World faction had been deleted and the streamer who used to enthusiastically spam general chat had gone back to playing Yu-Gi-Oh. I was mostly there to hang out with people, so once my friends stopped playing, I did too. Read the rest of the story... Players have discovered several ways to duplicate gold, and the developers have even gone so far as to shut the MMORPG's economy down at least twice. Now it seems a plan to compensate players for lost gold has resulted in huge, unexplained sums showing up in their accounts, and the studio has switched New World's EU servers into maintenance mode while it gets to the bottom of the issue. Earlier today, a post in the New World forums claimed that more than 300,000 gold had been added to a player's game account. While other forum users initially dismissed the post as casual trolling, other players reported members of their companies also receiving huge lump sums of gold, between 100,000 and 300,000 apiece. Pneuma, a New World community moderator, replied to the original post, simply saying "Congratulations!" Shortly after that, community manager Tosch posted an announcement that the EU Central Region worlds had been put into maintenance mode as the dev team investigated "the currently ongoing coin compensation for players". In a recent interview with PCGamesN, game director Scot Lane points to the MMORPG's earlier stages and endgame when asked what areas of PvP and PvE the team has identified as underdeveloped. "We know we have some work to do to improve the experience in the early-mid game (especially for solo players) and have already begun working on content to improve that experience," he tells us. "Our goal is to keep responding to what players ask for, and feedback from players will continue to help shape New World's direction." As for what these kind of improvements could look like, Lane points to the recent introduction of the Varangian Raiders. The new gang of foes was added in the recent Into The Void update, with story-led quests giving you a sense of who they are. "So far, only a few Varangian camps have shown up in the player-inhabited parts of Aeternum, but all indications are that we'll be seeing more of them," he tells us. Read the rest of the story... Final Fantasy XIV has its Halloween and Christmas-style All Saints' Wake and Starlight Celebration bashes, for example. Assassin's Creed Valhalla has its Oskoreia, Ostara, Yule, and Sigrblot seasonal shindigs. Destiny 2 has events like Festival of the Lost, and - well, you get the idea. They often signal new activities, items, and other good tidings - and it sure sounds like the New World team has something up its sleeve in the way of a seasonal celebration. In an interview with New World game director Scot Lane, we asked about whether the devs would consider making seasonal changes to Aeternum's map and, beyond this, if the devs have any plans cooking up for some seasonal events. Oh, and - naturally - if he could share any details with us. "Yes, yes, and a little," he tells us. "I think seasonal events are hugely important for MMOs and something we want to do for sure." Sadly, Lane tells us that he "can't get into specifics" right now, but he does add, "I can say that winter is a great time for festivals!" So, yep - it sure sounds like there's something suitably seasonal and festive on the horizon for the MMORPG's first winter out in the wild. Read the rest of the story... However, shortly after it went live fans started reporting endgame-adjusting changes that appeared to have been added, too, with some raising concerns about a perceived increase to grind and things becoming tougher for solo players. Now, Amazon Games has posted a new dev blog offering some context to the endgame changes rolled out. "Recently changes were made to the Elite POIs in the endgame zones and it is clear to us that proper context wasn't delivered on why those changes were made," developer Berserker Mike explains on the game's forums. "Our goal is to have a variety of areas that players can go to for crafting materials and gear. But with new gear and equipment, we want players to be challenged. "Our vision for endgame is multi-faceted, and includes Outpost Rush and Wars, Invasions and Arenas, 60+ Corrupted breaches, 60+ Elite POIs and named creatures, and Expeditions, with more to come in the future," the devs adds, explaining that there won't be one, single source for "best in slot". Instead, he explains, the team's desire is to encourage players to engage with various different activities. Read the rest of the story... One of the MMORPG's moderators confirms on Reddit that downtime for New World's 1.1 update starts at 5am PT / 8am ET / 1pm GMT today (November 18) and is expected to last four hours. Amazon Games started testing features for the update last week on the brand-new PTR. One of the main standouts is a new weapon called the Void Gauntlet, which allows you to support your allies or attack foes - think of it as a DPS-support hybrid. "It's the first weapon to scale on both intelligence and focus, making it a great pairing with the Life Staff and other magic weapons," Amazon says. "The Annihilation tree focuses on maximising damage at close range and revolves around Void Blade, a summoned blade of corrosive void energy. The Decay tree offers ranged healing and debuffs and revolves around Orb of Decay, a dual-phase projectile that can debuff enemies and heal allies." If you're keen to find out more, check out our New World Void Gauntlet guide for details on the skill tree and best build. You'll also find a new batch of foes raiding southeastern Aeternum. Expected downtime is 4 hours. Greetings, Adventurers! Into the Void has graduated from the Public Test Realm (PTR) and is releasing into the main New World game. This update includes the new Void Gauntlet weapon, allowing you to manipulate the powers of the Void to support your allies and debilitate your enemies with this magical DPS/support hybrid. You will also be able to face off against new (and fierce) Varangian Knight enemy type as you ascertain their true intentions and why they’ve arrived in Aeternum. Into the Void contains hundreds of other changes and bug-fixes, from faster movement speed on roads, to linking Trading Posts, to new quests. You can find the full update notes on the new releases section of our website, where all major updates will be shared. As always, thanks for your support. We’ll see you in Aeternum! New World Void Gauntlet skill tree and release dateNov 17, 2021 - PCGamesNAmazon Games Studios has unveiled the next weapon arriving in New World - the Void Gauntlet. It's the first New World weapon to be introduced since the MMO game was released, and players are already testing it out on the New World public test server, where the next big update is live for players to test out. The Void Gauntlet is a magic weapon that shoots ranged projectiles that deal - unsurprisingly - Void damage. It's not an exclusively ranged weapon, though, as it can also summon a Void Blade that performs melee attacks. Holding 'block' converts your health into mana over time. This may seem like a dangerous trade off, but crucially, several Void Gauntlet abilities provide healing to yourself and allies - making it the only other source of healing in the game aside from the Life Staff. Healing is in high demand in New World, so the Void Gauntlet introduces some much-needed variety in this area. The gauntlet scales with both Intelligence and Focus. From initial testing, it looks like Intelligence provides the most damage scaling, while Focus is needed for secondary damage scaling and provides all the scaling for the gauntlet's healing skills. The weapon is still being tested on the PTR, so everything we know is subject to change between now and the Void Gauntlet release date. Read the rest of the story... Community manager Luxendra explains in a blog post that the first wave of bans happened on November 2, which the team estimates eliminated over 80% of duped coin and item value from the MMORPG's in-game economy. "The remaining duped items have continued to hurt many players' experience," the community manager says. "It didn't affect all players or worlds equally, and also more significantly impacted players who were pursuing end-game goals and gear. We apologise for the impact this has had on some of our most dedicated players. It's disheartening to see others cheat to obtain what you have worked so hard to achieve, while also hurting the economy in the process." Luxendra says Amazon Games banned an additional 460 players for using the original trade or newer housing exploits on November 15 after the team managed to "unravel and identify" where the items and coin landed. "By doing so, we were able to remove 98% of remaining duped items and coin in the game," they share. "The small amount of duped items that remain were a result of players who stumbled upon the duping issue but did not take exploitive action, and will not be banned." Read the rest of the story... Those exploits have apparently not been difficult to find. After another duplication exploit started circulating over the weekend, the devs at Amazon have once again disabled the in-game economy. "We are aware of a possible duplication exploit that has been circulating the forums and social media," the devs say on the official forums. "We are disabling all forms of wealth transfer between players (ie. sending currency, guild treasury, trading post, player to player trading) while we investigate. Any player that has engaged in the use of this exploit will be actioned against." The exploit appears to allow players to duplicate furniture items, and the in-game market has been flooded with trophies since the issue began to make the rounds. As PC Gamer notes, there have been numerous posts about the issue on the official bug report forums, and the devs are still investigating. Read the rest of the story... Read more War is easier now in New WorldNov 14, 2021 - PCGamesNYou'll soon be able to declare war more easily in New World, which will come as a big relief to anyone getting bored of this peacetime nonsense. Some companies in the MMO have found themselves unable to declare war on others, but Amazon is hopeful this issue is fixed now - although there are still other war-related matters to be dealt with. Recently, players as part of companies in New World had discovered that they were seemingly unable to declare war on various territories, despite believing they were above the required 10% threshold for throwing the territory into conflict - which is currently hard to track so players often weren't sure. Well, Amazon Game Studios reports in its latest dev blog that it believes it has "resolved most cases of this" - particularly in regards to fixing a bug in a recent update where "many players from a faction all turned in PvP missions at the same time" meant that the influence from these quests wasn't being counted properly. The team asks players to report if it's still going on, however. Read the rest of the story... The good news is that it's not penalising players for using third-party mods - at least, not yet anyway. When New World launched back in September it received good reviews from critics and players alike, but many were surprised by the reliance on the compass and the larger world map to track quests and other markers rather than the standard minimap used in most MMOs or open-world games. In the latest developer blog posted earlier today, Amazon says that it "understands the reasons" players want a minimap but is concerned adding one will have "a negative effect on immersion" and that it has "concerns with it meshing with New World's action combat style and world design". The team is also worried a minimap "could change open-world behavior and potentially remove the natural exploration that happens now in the game." Read the rest of the story... According to Amazon, the team is "gauging interest" in the feature - so if players want region server transfers they need to let the developer know. The saga of New World's server transfers feature has been almost as epic as the game itself. After the game's servers got clogged by the influx of new players at launch, Amazon Game Studios promised a free server transfer to all players so they could move to a less populated one. After multiple delays, the feature is finally available - but the one thing players can't do is change server regions, despite Amazon previously stating that they'd be able to do so. Amazon also said that "each region is a separate database and it is not possible" for players to move characters between regions. However, perhaps due to player backlash to this decision, the developer says it is now "gauging interest in cross-region transfers". Read the rest of the story... Our goal is to provide you with the best possible experience in Aeternum. That means getting feedback and testing early and often— especially with our players that have provided phenomenal feedback and helped us track down a plethora of issues since launch. We have many new and exciting changes planned for the future of New World, and as part of that preparation, we’d like to introduce a new program: the New World Public Test Realm. PTR The Public Test Realm (PTR) is a limited-availability server-set that will give players an early look at upcoming features. These preview builds are snapshots of upcoming major updates and are not final versions— you may encounter bugs, crashes, missing text, or other issues. Between our internal testing efforts and your feedback we hope to catch and resolve all serious issues before they reach the live servers. Hundreds of changes have been made and the full release notes will be shared on release day. To help with the feedback process, all newly created characters on these worlds will have the opportunity to instantly level to select level-ranges outfitted with appropriate gear and items. By the end of today, everyone with a copy of New World will find the New World Public Test Realm application in their Steam library. Downloading this stand-alone application allows interested players access to check out the latest preview version and provide feedback. PTR servers will officially open tomorrow, November 10, at 12 PM PT (7PM UTC). Servers are limited — at the start, there will be one world available in US East and one world available in Central Europe. When the test period is complete and the main New World game is updated with the previewed content, all worlds will shut down and be wiped clean. You will still see the New World PTR application in your Steam library, but there will not be active servers until the next time we announce a test. If you encounter a bug, exploit, or have suggestions to improve a feature or piece of content, we’d love to hear your feedback on our new PTR sub-forum (you can also utilize our in-game feedback tool). We will do our best to address as much of your feedback as possible before the content update makes its way to our live servers. Developer DaveNW has given us an idea of the changes the team has in mind, explaining that the devs' "initial focus will be in weapon swapping, dodge cancels, and attack input windows" - and the proposed tweaks sound like they'll make a really helpful difference to battling in Aeternum. First up, one area the New World devs are currently working on is the responsiveness of swapping weapons and ensuring the consistency of this across all of the game's attacks, as the team wants switching between weapons to be "an integral and fluid part of combat". The dev explains that, currently, players might often end up attacking with the weapon they've currently got equipped having thought they'd swapped weapons - but then that not being the case. The dev doesn't go into detail on how the team will address this, but does say, "we are working to fix these situations and expand when you are able to swap your weapon". Read more Amazon’s MMORPG 'New World' Debuts at #1 on Steam with a Peak of 700k Concurrent PlayersSep 29, 2021 - GitHypFounded in 2012 and supported by Amazon’s success in just about every other industry, Amazon’s game development studio has been struggling to produce a hit over the past decade. With hundreds of millions invested, Amazon has pulled the plug on multiple big-budget games recently, such as Breakaway and Crucible – the latter even shockingly being sent back to beta testing and canceled after being fully released on Steam with a peak of 25k concurrent players – something unheard of in the video game industry. More recently, Amazon even canceled their upcoming Lord of the Rings MMORPG, but now it looks like they have an even bigger MMO with New World, which launched at #1 on Steam with a peak of 708k concurrent players during its first day. There have been many factors leading to the success of New World. Besides having almost unlimited funding, the world's best servers, and owning the gaming-focused streaming service, Twitch, Amazon couldn’t have picked a better time to launch their new massive multiplayer online role-playing game. The industry-leader, World of Warcraft, has seen its player/subscriber numbers continue to decline year-over-year per data shared on investor calls and reports. And numerous lawsuits against Blizzard over the past few months have led to many fans boycotting the studio behind WoW and looking elsewhere to get their MMO fix. Besides WoW, Amazon’s biggest competition in the MMO market is currently Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV Online – which saw its own player base spike over these past few months on Steam (peaking at 68k concurrent players) as fans of WoW jumped ship and followed their favorite streamers to a new virtual world online. Unlike FFXIV and WoW, which have their own launchers, whether purchasing Amazon’s $40 PC exclusive directly on Amazon or Steam, all players must use the Steam client to launch New World. While this makes it difficult to directly compare said games, it gives us the exact player counts for New World, without any question as to which platform the majority of the game’s population uses.
