EVO 2022 to feature Guilty Gear Strive and "main title" King of Fighters 15Mar 9, 2022 - The LoadoutThe Evolution Champion Series will be returning to its usual home at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas this summer, from August 5-7. This will be the first EVO tournament since the Sony acquisition last year. The official lineup of games to be played at EVO 2022 has finally been announced, and there are some returning fan favourites, a host of new titles, and one noticeable exception. It has been known for a while that Super Smash Bros wouldn't be appearing at EVO 2022 after the EVO Twitter account put out a statement explaining that Nintendo has chosen "not to continue its legacy" at the tournament this year. But now the fighting game has released its lineup, it's been made official. There are many titles that players will be glad to see at EVO 2022, however. New fighting game The King of Fighter XV has been made the "main title" of EVO 2022. The other games appearing for the first time include Granblue Fantasy: Versus, Guilty Gear: Strive, Melty Blood: Type Lumina, and Skullgirls 2nd Encore. The games that have appeared before and will be returning for EVO 2022 are Dragon Ball FighterZ, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, and Tekken 7. In it, the heroes are besieged by the enemy forces of Shao Khan, forcing Raiden and his team of warriors into a deal to compete in a final Mortal Kombat that'll determine the fate of the realms. NetherRealm confirmed back in July that it had finally ceased working on Mortal Kombat 11 and there would be no more content updates for the game, as the studio was moving on to its next project. This was assumed to be Injustice 3, given how NetherRealm has alternated between the Mortal Kombat and Injustice series since 2011. However, according to industry insider Jeff Grubb (thanks, VGC) on the Giant Bomb channel, NetherRealm is instead going straight to Mortal Kombat 12 as its next game rather than Injustice 2 or even the rumoured Marvel game. "Mortal Kombat 12 would make the most sense because that's a game they know will make money, it'll sell well," Grubb says. "That's what I've heard is happening... it lines up with the reality and it lines up with what I've heard." Read the rest of the story... Guilty Gear Strive tips to help you improve your gameplay Mortal Kombat 11 is dead and dev is "focusing on its next project"Jul 3, 2021 - PCGamesNMore than two years after the release of Mortal Kombat 11, developer NetherRealm has announced that it is ending support for one of the best fighting games around. The developer confirms it is now "focusing on its next project", which has immediately prompted speculation about Injustice 3. NetherRealm posted the announcement on the official Mortal Kombat Twitter feed, stating that it will not be adding any more DLC or characters to the game - immediately killing speculation about a possible Fighter Pack 3, which had been rumoured since last year as including another DC Comics character, Deathstroke. Fans were quick to point out that - despite NetherRealm's claims of 2+ years of support - the team hadn't actually released anything for MK11 since the movie skin pack in November. Despite fan upset over the ending of support for MK11 the game still received the longest period of support for any NetherRealm game so far - although that pales in comparison to the amount of content most other fighting games receive, such as Street Fighter V, so that's not necessarily a good thing. Following the big Warner Bros Discovery merger this year, a big concern was regarding the fate of the various WB Games studios - which include Netherrealm (Mortal Kombat), Rocksteady (Suicide Squad, Batman Arkham), TT Games (LEGO Star Wars), and Avalanche (Hogwarts Legacy). Rumours continue to spring up suggesting some would be sold, but Warner Bros has now confirmed that won't be the case - with one exception. Earlier this month Warner Bros announced it would merge with Discovery, but the one thing left off in the massive press release was the fate of its games division - other than a brief mention. The reports were that WB Games would keep some studios but not all, with that finally coming true this week with the news that WB was selling Golf Clash developer Playdemic to EA for $1.4 billion in cash. Hidden at the end of the press release was a note suggesting that Playdemic will be the only WB Games studio sold, which states that the remaining studios are "included in the recently announced WarnerMedia-Discovery transaction and will become part of the combined media and entertainment company." This particular live-action incarnation of Mortal Kombat - directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Greg Russo - predominantly unfolds in the modern day, charting the adventures of washed-up MMA fighter Cole Young (an entirely new character to the Mortal Kombat universe, played by Lewis Tan), who gradually becomes embroiled with the series' familiar cast after encountering Outworld emperor, Shang Tsung (Chin Han). Before getting to the meat of the story, however, Quaid and Russo set the scene with an opening sequence that whisks viewers back to Feudal Japan in order to establish the conflict between the clans of Hanzo and Bi-Han (who go on to become Scorpion and Sub-Zero, here played by Hiroyuki Sanada and Joe Taslim respectively). It seems that they can't stop winning, no matter the tournament and no matter the game. And their dominance continued this weekend as they were crowned champion of the WePlay Ultimate Fighting League Season 1. SonicFox, who is signed to esports organisation Evil Geniuses, made their entrance to the tournament introduced as the "defender of trans rights," and stood in all their fursuited glory underneath a trans pride flag alongside their fellow competitors. Once the Mortal Kombat 11 tournament kicked off, SonicFox mostly utilised Joker to their advantage, but also dabbled with Jade and D'Vorah on occasion. After going unbeaten in seven matches in the group stage, their sole loss in the finals bracket was to Sayed 'Tekken Master' Ahmed in the semi-finals. However, SonicFox came through the loser's bracket to face Tekken Master again in the final, beating the NASR Esports player 5-4 to reset the bracket and then dominating in a 5-1 victory to seal the win. After failing to rank in Steam’s top 50 most played games back in 2015 with Mortal Kombat X, the iconic fighting game franchise has returned to its former glory with this year’s Mortal Kombat 11 launching at #10 on Steam.

Last Tuesday, Mortal Kombat 11 peaked with 35k concurrent players – a number almost three times higher than MKX’s peak of 14k players during its launch four years ago on Steam.

That number crushed NetherRealm’s 2017 superhero fighting game flop on Steam, Injustice 2. The DC Universe fighter peaked with only 1.8k concurrent players during its launch – which was only half of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite’s disastrous launch peak of 3.5k players that same year.

MK11’s big comeback fell short of topping Dragon Ball FighterZ’s record-setting peak of 44k concurrent players last year on Steam, but the latest installment in the series easily surpassed other recent popular fighting games such as Tekken 7 (18k players), Soulcalibur VI (14k players), and Street Fighter V (14k players).

Unfortunately, while more gamers than ever are now playing Mortal Kombat on PC, not all are happy with the port from NetherRealm studios. After its first week, MK11 currently sits at a “Mixed” review score from users who are experiencing numerous technical issues and frustration over the game’s expensive microtransactions.

And their disappointment after purchasing the $60+ version of MK11 on Steam is rightfully so. The PC version didn’t launch with the same Day 1 patch that was made available to console players. And it took NetherRealm a whole week before releasing an update on PC (which many are still saying doesn't help resolve issues for them or has even made things worse).

With a much larger player base on PC than their previous games, NetherRealm seems to now doing what they can to try and remedy the current state of the game. WB Games has made headlines in the past for having games with terrible performance issues on PC (Batman: Arkham Knight); hopefully, as the number of players on PC continues to grow, publishers like WB will start to give more attention to their PC launches.
