Morels: The Hunt

 
UpdateMay 31, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsIt has been a little while so I wanted to give a little update on things. We just got back from Maryland to our home in Indiana a couple of weeks ago. I had successful bone marrow transplant done in January at the NIH (National Institutes of Health) in Maryland. I just got the call that the UAB1 test came back, and I no longer have VEXAS. This is the best news. It is still a long road to full recovery but the is such great news. I still have to wait until July when I go back for my follow up and have a bone marrow biopsy done to see if the Blood Cancer is gone but the doctors are very confident that it is gone as well. This journey has been a roller coaster of emotions. I am so thankful for my donor who has blessed me with a second chance at life. Even through these difficult times God has blessed us in so many ways. We are very thankful. I was not able to work on or do any updates to either Morels game while I was out in Maryland. The project files that I had access to for the games would just constantly crash. I do not know if it was an issue with the laptop I was using or an issue with the project files. I spent most of my time in Maryland just trying to recover from the transplant and then working on my solo game Bigfoot Life. We have also started to work on the next Morels game. Morels: Out of this World. I can't wait to share more information on this game. The goal was when I got back I was going to do an update for both Morels games based on a lot of the feedback I've seen posted in the Steam Hubs. I also released a demo of Bigfoot life and entered it in the Steam Next Fest. Well, this has ended up being a little too much all at once and I've actually started to get a little bit of GVHD (Graft Versus Host Disease). The doctors believe it could just be from stress of over doing it with the game stuff. They have suggested that I step back a little and give my body more time to heal from the transplant. I decided to pulled Bigfoot Life out of the Steam Fest as well. I am still planning on doing the updates to the Morels games as well as give out more information on the new game. Right now though I've decided from feedback from my doctor's that it is best if I ease back into things and don't feel so rushed to do everything. Recovery from the transplant takes a long time and I have to prioritize my health. So, the updates and information on the new game are coming. They may just take a little longer than I originally was hoping. I was admitted on January 22nd and successfully had the transplant done on January 29th. There have been a few rough days as to be expected but overall things have been going pretty well. Right now, I have successfully engrafted with the Donor's cells, and I might be looking at being discharged from the NIH this week if things stay on track. I will then have to stay near by the NIH for weekly tests and doctor visits until 100 days post-transplant. If everything goes well, I could be looking at returning back home to Indiana in May Some time. Feeling extra thankful for my donor and how things have gone so far. Thank you for all your support. What's Next The next update will most likely be in May once I get back home to indiana. Besides updating the Morels Games. We are also looking into starting development on our next game. I think we are going to go with Morels: Out of This World. It will be mostly like the Morels: The Hunt games except you will be on alien planets with alien mushrooms, plants, trees, foliage, and animals/creatures. We will try to provide more information on this game a little bit later where we will also be asking the community for ideas for these alien planets. Thank you again for all your support. We are excited to take part in this event and help out the children at GOSH. -Wes Development and Health UpdatesNov 7, 2024 - Community AnnouncementsI just wanted to take a moment to share the most recent update on my health issue as well address what that will mean for future updates and game developments. Health Updates The NIH (National Institutes of Health) in Maryland have found a donor and I have an official bone marrow transplant date. The actual transplant date is January 29th. Testing will begin on January 7th. We will have to stay in the area until at least the middle of May. My family and I will make the temporary move from Indiana to Maryland at the beginning of January. If the transplant is successful, it could cure both the VEXAS and the blood cancer. This journey has been a rollercoaster of emotions. I am so thankful for my donor who has blessed me with a second chance at life. Even through these difficult times God has blessed us in so many ways. We are very thankful. What does this mean for future updates and game development? I think we may be able to squeeze out one more update before starting this journey in January. If there are any issues that need to be addressed or fixed please let us know. Also let us know if there are any updates that you would like to see and we will see if we can get them in the game before January. I should still be able to check support messages and try to keep up on here as well. I would imagine the first couple of months this may be more difficult, but I will do my best. As for actual updates or bug fixes, those most likely will depend on how recovery is going after transplant. The graphics won't be great, it is a very small game, and the game will be a bit janky. The game is only in English. Each Morels: the Hunt game will feature the same game but a different map to play. The concept will be the same. Find all 16 morel mushrooms in the map. We know some of you might be interested in just checking out the game that gets unlocked and don't want to take the time to search every map in the game just to find the Crystal Morel. We have decided to add hints to where the Crystal Morel is in in each game at the link below. This link will show you which map the Crystal Morel is in each game. There are links on this page that will also show you its location on the map. You can view the page to just find out the map it is in if that is all you want to know. Health Update As of now I am on schedule to have a bone marrow transplant in January. Until then, I am doing rounds of chemo each month. The chemo is helping my MDS but is not helping much with VEXAS. If the bone marrow transplant is successful, it could cure me of both. Planet 47 Games If anyone is interested, I also create solo games in my free time under the developer name Planet 47 Games. I recently released a game called Spider Fox. It is a game I made for my 5 year old son. A lot of things in the game were his ideas. He was a good playtester as well. The newest game I am working on is called 'Bigfoot Life.' You may notice some familiar things from Morels: The Hunt in this game. As many of you know, our studio is made up of just three brothers. We make games about things we love and are passionate about. None of us are able to do this full-time making our resources limited. I am the lead developer, only programmer, the one who handles all support issues, manages the Steam Community Hub and Social Media. The reason why I wanted to mention the above is because I am dealing with some health issues that have hit me harder than expected. There will be times like this last week where I will be limited to what I can do on the game because of my health. This will eventually lead to me having to have a Bone Marrow Transplant sometime between Summer and Fall. When that happens I will mostly likely have to take a couple of months off. I felt it was important to let everyone know at least a little about the situation so there will be no surprise when that happens. I will make a post on here when that time comes so everyone knows there my be limited replies or updates during that time. Until then we will do our best to keep updating the game and I will do my best to keep up with support and the steam hub as well. There will be other times where my treatment or other things to do with my health may delay my responses but I will do my best to get back to everyone as soon as I can. That game is Morels: The Hunt 2, released this week, and as you might guess, it is about finding and identifying various species of mushroom in lush, photorealistic wilderness locations. There are also unicorns, crystal skulls and robot parts. Slightly confused by the unicorns, crystal skulls and robot parts, if I'm honest. It feels a bit like developers Abrams Studios are unconvinced as to the popular appeal of mushroom hunting, and have garlanded the concept with random mythology so as to widen the Venn diagram overlap between "fungi fans" and "people who want to live in cyberpunk Narnia". The new Speed Hunt Mode was not quite ready for release yet so that is not in this update. However, since there were a couple of important bug fixes we wanted to go ahead and get this update out now. We know the Single Season Achievement bug has been an annoying one. We believe this should now be fixed. We hope to release the new Speed Hunt Mode in the next update. IN THIS UPDATE Viewfinder Update We have updated the viewfinder in camera mode to have transparency instead of being all black outside your viewing area. This should help players track down running animals better. Visually we believe it also looks better. We have found it was a bit difficult to track down animals as they were running around when you could only see in the middle of the screen. Everything outside of that was blocked by black outside of your viewing area. In the new update you will be able to see outside that area as well. It will still be a little darker outside the viewing area but now you will be able to see everything in view even if it is not in view of the camera.
