New update coming soon!May 6, 2019 - Community AnnouncementsWe're back! Hello everyone, we're really close to being finished with this next update. We've spent the past few months working really hard. AI AI has been a challenge. So far in Mist of the Dark, we've tried to focus on the atmosphere and immersion right out of the gate. Horror is a really hard genre to nail. It takes incredible amounts of time, patience, and vision. If you've played any game with very basic AI, you'll notice that they often make decisions that don't make sense. To avoid breaking immersion, we designed an entirely new AI system from the ground up using foundations from GOAL, Behaviour Tree, and Utility Scoring. This new system lets the AI always choose the best action in any given circumstance. We obviously will still have bugs and fixes to do, but the foundation we've built will make it easier for us to add features and debug in the future. We'll also be putting this new AI foundation on the Unreal Marketplace for anyone interested in using an advanced system that requires way less time to develop on! The AI is currently being tested and implemented and we'll be releasing it to our testing branch within the next few weeks. That means no more waiting for others to play! Game Improvements Mist of the Dark is 5 years old at this point. We started developing this game in a pre-release version of Unreal Engine. This has caused us a lot of trouble. We've built many of the systems without using Unreal's built-in features, which has made developing new features a difficult task. To address this, we've been re-doing a lot of our code. (There is a lot to redo...) While this doesn't make a huge difference in the game visually, it will set us up for a future of better development. It's also cut down on performance quite a bit, so you should see some FPS improvements. We've also been working on finishing the systems that we currently have implemented, including combat updates, UI changes/additions, and some small feature implementation. Bug fixing Before our launch, we didn't have a wide set of users to test and find bugs for us. Launch opened our eyes to the road that we need to take in order to get Mist of the Dark to a point that players enjoy. Sooo, for the past few months, as well as creating new features, we've been fixing a ton of bugs. The Future Mist of the Dark is on a road for improvement. After we release this next update, get some feedback, and adjust as necessary, we'll be pushing onto our Gamemode Update! That update will be focused on pushing out a new gamemode which we'll be revealing shortly after this coming update. Thank you to everyone in the community for all your help reporting bugs. Where we are At this current moment, we are working on a few things. Here are the highlights for our next build: 1. AI 2. Matchmaking 3. Fixes for weapons 4. Monster movement and attack updates 5. Sewers update 6. UI Update 7. Save game update (will fix resolution not saving) Because of you, our community This next build will be a major step for Mist of the Dark. We'd only put about 4 months worth of work in when we launched in August. We've had another 4 months to work, and it has been game-changing, literally! With the valuable feedback we got from you guys, we were able to focus on some of the major problems with the game. We want to use the creepy atmosphere with fast paced, intense combat to create something terrifying. With our new focus on how the game feels and plays, we're making a lot of progress. Closing To wrap up this post, we'll be focusing on these things for the new update coming out, and we're really excited to show you all the work we've done the past few months. The new update may take another month or two, possibly more. We're a team of two, both working part time on this. RyanImportant Update - AI and Matchmaking Coming SoonOct 30, 2018 - Community AnnouncementsHey everyone, I wanted to send out an update so I could clear some confusion about what's happening with the game, and give some info on our next feature update! We've all been reading the reviews, and I've seen quite a few negetive ones. They mostly consist of: Unable to find other players. Sessions dying due to players quitting Minor (annoying), non gamebreaking bugs So, here's what's happening on our side: Player base A common issue with creating a multiplayer game like we are, is building a playerbase. We're pushing for some key foundations in Mist of the Dark that we believe will make gameplay smoother, and in turn will build our playerbase. Right now, we're focusing on an AI and Matchmaking system to solve this issue. In the future, we're looking at Weapon Customization, new Game Modes, new Maps, a Leveling System, and more! AI and Matchmaking Our next goal is creating an AI and matchmaking system to address the issues of not being able to find or host games. AI will (optionally) fill a match when initially hosted, and when player count drops below a certain amount. Instead of looking for a server, you'll select a map and a few other options and automatically create or join a server. As players near you start playing, the server will populate automatically! Updating the Engine Before we can add the changes we want, we have to update our engine version. We are currently working our way from Unreal 4.7 to 4.20. 4.7 was extremely buggy and was missing a lot of key features we need to complete this game. After the update is complete, we'll have access to features that will make development substantially more easy and stable. In Summary We are looking forward to bringing in the new matchmaking and AI system, and believe it will address the major issues everyone is having. We have some really cool plans for the future of this game, and we're really excited to bring it to life with the community's help. A lot of you have been having issues joining and hosting sessions. There are a couple reasons for this: 1. The last session you tried to join wasn't destroyed correctly. 2. The server is full, but the server player count shows it only has 1 player. We went ahead and pushed an update for the first issue yesterday, so you don't have to restart the whole game just to join a server. We're working on the second problem, which is kind of a bigger issue with the Steam API we're using as it's not pulling the correct information. I'll keep everyone updated on the progress we make over the next few days. Be sure to post in the Forums if you have any feedback/suggestions/bug reports. Hey everyone! Release has brought us some new players, and with that influx comes an influx of bugs! We're going to be spending time on the most game-breaking ones over the next week or so. Here's an overview of the game so far! Current state of the game Our plans for this release For this release, we've re-done the entire monster and soldier in efforts to make game-play smoother. This is just the beginning steps of getting them to where they are, we have a lot more planned. Along with some bug fixes, we added these things to the game: New controls for the monster including double jump and warp Weapons stability updates Menu UI Updates, including a controls menu (Will be editable soon) New night-vision and thermal for both teams. Added a little detail to the sewers, still a long way from done. HUD Refactor Game-mode stability Players become corpses rather than dissapear Backlog These are the things we couldn't finish in this update but are working towards in the next one: Ledge Climbing First and 3rd Person attached spectating Bug fixes Here are our fixes since the last update! Death sound plays more than once Fixed a few places in the sewers where you could glitch through the map Spamming r for reload can stop the reload animation Monster HUD doesn't correctly destroy itself sometimes UI doesn't spawn with monster sometimes after round end. On player join, sometimes the monster is unspawned. Random Crash we're in the process of fixing. Sometimes you get kicked from your session and the soldier HUD doesn't get removed. Have to exit game. General code maintenance. Known Issues Game Breaking These are our top priority right now Have to quit the game after leaving session to join another one Servers don't show correct amount of players, leading to failed join sessions. Our release was delayed due to a mess up on our end. I switched the cave's gamemode to take screenshots, and didn't end up changing it back. It's now fixed, but it wasn't earlier today when Steam took a look at the game. We have re-submitted the game to Steam and should be approved early next week. Until then, you can get access to the game right now! Get your key here Current state of the game New Level We've added a new level called "The Sewers". It's an indoor map much smaller than The Cave, and has much more depth. Explore each room to uncover it's advantages and to plan your attack. Our plan is to get some feedback on how the level plays, and improve it as the game moves along. Bug fixes Here are our fixes since the last update! You can get access to the game right now by going here to claim your key! There are only 200 available right now, so get yours before they're gone! If you need people to play with, check out our Discord server or the Community forums! Current state of the game We have a few bugs to iron out before we get into release, so we've decided to give some keys away to catch all of them. The game has a few bugs and gameplay elements to work out. Expect a lot of changes in the coming months. If you encounter issues with the current build, please check out the forums to see if anyone else has seen this issue. If no one has, please post about it! The Sewers is an undercover government operation that was infiltrated by the monster. There are long decrepit hallways, dark and open rooms with creepy atmosphere, and places you can only access if you look hard enough. Bug fixes and gameplay improvements To get all of the bugs knocked out, we need your help finding them! We're going to be looking through our forums and engaging the community while fixing the game. We also want to take some time and make the game "feel" better. Mist of the Dark's combat is very fast paced and adrenaline fueling. We want to keep it this way and improve on it. Mist of the Dark is a 4v1 horror game. Play as the Soldiers working together to fend off your deepest fears, thrive together, or die alone in terror. One player will control the monster; terrify your enemies, make your own jump scares, and be the last living thing around. We plan on having regular gameplay updates (we will hash out a timeline later in the future as Early Access progresses) and to be as transparent as possible. As it progresses we have more Monsters, more maps, and other goodies planned. We will always keep you updated. Visualistic Studios will post regular bi-weekly or monthly announcments and news (more if needed), even if it's a simple timeline update. We want to hear everyone in the community. Our goal is to make a game that everyone can enjoy, fueled by you, the players. Feel free to drop by our Discord server to chat, form teams, and maybe even be a play tester! Early Access release will be July 20th, 2018, and will be free. In the coming weeks we will implement a 'donation' feature if anyone feels like contributing. All feature releases will be free. We were unable to get our build on Steam in time to meet our initial release deadline, so we decided to push it back a week and put more energy into the combat system. Initial Release Our first release is a 1 v 1-4 inside of a dark and foggy cave. As the monster, your objective is to hunt. As the soldier, you are tasked with killing the monster. There will be more than a few bugs in this first build, please help us eradicate them by posting in the forums! Future development goals This week we'll be working on integrating some key Steam features and knocking out some combat bugs. After release we'll be pushing out some fixes as the bug reports roll in! Our next feature goals are skill trees and abilities, with an AI system following right after! Down the line, we'll be adding new levels and game-modes like Horde.
