Konami insists it has not shut down its video game division despite internal restructureJan 26, 2021 - EurogamerKonami has insisted it has not shut down its video game division amid an internal restructure that has led to the consolidation of its production divisions. Yesterday it emerged that Konami had announced plans to dissolve its three production divisions "to respond to the rapid market that surrounds us". The announcement, made on Konami's corporate website, also revealed a personnel reshuffle that sees production division bosses in new roles. This news was reported by some outlets as evidence that Konami was ditching video game development, but representatives for the company have since insisted this is not the case. A new event called The Research's Story (Special Edition) - set to run from 23rd October until 6th November 2018 - will fuse other stalwart Konami brands like Castlevania and Silent Hill with Metal Gear's unique take on a survival game. Collect enough points during the event and you'll get Pyramid Head's natty headpiece, as well as cassette tapes featuring music from Castlevania Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night, plus the spine-chilling original theme from Silent Hill. It came about an hour in when I had to sneak into a base packed with shambling horrors, using stealth and distraction to outwit the hordes. It was tense. It was exciting. That didn’t last long. (more…) Metal Gear Survive Launches with 92% Less Players than Metal Gear Solid V on SteamFeb 28, 2018 - GitHypAfter two decades of Metal Gear games, Japanese publisher Konami’s first attempt at continuing the franchise without its iconic creator, Hideo Kojima, suffered a disappointing first week on Steam. Metal Gear Survive debuted with a peak of only 7,713 concurrent players over the weekend. A 92% drop in the franchise’s player base when compared to Metal Gear Solid V’s 90,952 players back in September 2015. But Konami’s unceremonious parting of ways with Kojima hasn’t been the only factor that has contributed to the new game’s lackluster launch. Even with MGS discounted to $39.99 on Steam, different gameplay mechanics and controversial microtransactions such as $9.99 save slots have also driven players away. [caption id="attachment_332909" align="aligncenter" width="786"] Metal Gear Survive's Peak Concurrent Players per Hour on Steam via GitHyp[/caption] And the fallout from the bitter breakup doesn’t stop with Metal Gear at Konami. Kojima’s departure also resulted in the cancellation of Silent Hills. The collaboration between Kojima and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro instantly became one of the most anticipated games in years after its haunting P.T. demo, and now Konami has to worry about the backlash of rebooting that series too. As for Kojima, his new studio is back to working with his old Silent Hills team of Del Toro and Norman Reedus on Death Stranding. An upcoming mysterious action IP that still has no release date and so far has only been confirmed on PlayStation 4. With the impact of Kojima’s departure now known, it’ll be interesting to see what Konami does next. Considering how low the player base already is for MGS, the latest installment in the franchise doesn’t look like it’s going to survive… and the same might also be true for the entire series with Konami continuing to make poor decisions and the father of the franchise, Kojima, likely taking the majority of the Metal Gear fan base with him to his next game.Metal Gear Survive s scuzzy microtransactions: paid saveslots, cash for emotes and buy-a-boostFeb 23, 2018 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunI’m having a significantly better time than I’d expected with Solid crew spin-off Metal Gear Survive, but something about it does rub me up the wrong way – and I’m not talking about whether or not it stuck a dagger in Kojima’s kidney or how heavily it borrows from other survival games. Like Metal Gear Solid V before, microtransactions have crept into Survive, and though they’re not at all necessary to either singleplayer or co-op in the open-world base-building survival sandbox, they do push against the limits of fairness. $10 to buy a second character slot, for instance, or $2 for a one-day temporary boost to the points required to level your guy up. And this is in a game that costs $40/ 35 upfront. (more…) Metal Gear Survive is wild, irritating, thrilling, familiar and incomparableFeb 22, 2018 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunThe obvious worry for a Kojima-less Metal Gear, even before it staggered into well-worn zombie survival territory, was that there was no way it could be anything like as off-the-chain ridiculous as a true Hideo joint. I think that’s true whether you’re one of those who considers him to be the auteur’s auteur or one of those who reckon his stories are equivalent of giving an 11-year-old infinite money to play with. Funny thing about the newly-released Metal Gear Survive though, based on around a day in its dusty deathscapes: ‘ridiculous’ is very much the operative term. It’s just that it’s a very different kind of absurdity to Metal Gears past. (more…) Metal Gear Survive is out nowFeb 22, 2018 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunWormhole spin-off Metal Gear Survive is out today, flinging off the tactical espionage trousers of its heritage and donning the survive waves of zombies windbreaker. Obviously, this makes the Kojima-free game look very stupid, walking around in its underpants. But don t worry, they made a launch trailer to cover up its bottom half. It s got the robots and desperate dives of its Fox Engine daddy, MGS V: The Phantom Pain, but this defend-o-shoot really has more in common with Fortnite. At least, that s how I felt after only an hour with the weekend beta. (more…) METAL GEAR SURVIVE Launch TrailerFeb 22, 2018 - Community AnnouncementsMETAL GEAR SURVIVE is out now. I would like to build a wacky funhouse base full of traps to trip, trap, and repel crystal-headed zombies, especially as I’d get to muck about with my pals in co-op. Well, Konami have announced they will run an open beta test of Metal Gear Survive on PC next weekend, packing several missions and four-player co-op. Ah yeah, go on. (more…)
