Casey Hudson and Mark Darrah announce departure from BioWareDec 3, 2020 - EurogamerBioWare general manager Casey Hudson and Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah have announced their departure from the studio. Hudson began his tenure at BioWare back in 1998, eventually serving as project director on the likes of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect. He parted way with the company for the first time in 2014, but returned, after a brief spell at Microsoft, in 2017. In a new post announcing his retirement from the position of general manager at BioWare in order to "make way for the next generation of studio leaders", Casey wrote, "It's not an easy decision to make, and big changes like this always come with a certain degree of sadness." Indie Gala offers indie games... and Mass Effect 2Apr 18, 2013 - ShacknewsIndie Gala has launched a campaign to help the Vancouver game development community, and it has enlisted help from some Canadian friends. The name-your-own price game bundle is offering seven games, including Mass Effect 2 from Alberta-based BioWare and Shank 2 from Vancouver's own Klei Enterainment. Paying the bare minimum of a penny on the Indie Gala will get you Rebuild. If you're slightly less of a cheapskate, you can pay $1 or more to get Kill Fun Yeah!, Shadowgrounds, and Zombie Driver HD. Finally, if you pay more than the average (approximately $6, as of the time of writing), you'll also net Gimbal, Shank 2, Mass Effect 2, and DLC for Zombie Driver. Two more mystery games will be unveiled next week: one for the lower tier, and one for the higher tier. Both will be unlocked if you've already paid. Most of the games activate on Steam or Desura, while ME2 activates on Origin. Revenue from the bundles will go towards scholarships for indie developers through the Launch Academy local incubator, and for game entrepreneur Matt Toner's political campaign. Mass Effect movie gets new writerOct 25, 2012 - ShacknewsFilm production company Legendary Entertainment has found a new writer to helm its Mass Effect movie adaptation. Legendary picked relatively unknown writer Morgan Davis Foehl to head up the new draft. Foehl is said to be a fan of the game series, and has a background in writing action-espionage scripts. Variety reports that the first draft was handled by Mark Protosevich (Thor, I Am Legend). Foehl has not had one of his scripts produced yet, but was the assistant editor on Rescue Me and I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry. He also penned Whatever Gets You Through the Night. That screenplay landed him on 2009's "Black List," a voting pool that features up-and-coming writers. Avi Arad is still on tap to produce the film along with Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni. BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk are still listed as executive producers, despite their recent resignation from the company. Last year, we learned that the movie would star male Shepard in the lead, but that BioWare would allow plot and character changes as needed. Mass Effect fan film 'Red Sand' releasedOct 9, 2012 - ShacknewsThe Mass Effect fan film Red Sand has finally been released, with the recognizable voice of Commander Shepard. The short is set 35 years before the game series, and stars Mark Meer (voice of the Male Shepard) as Commander Jon Grissom, who is tasked with protecting ruins from terrorists. Since it takes place in the Mass Effect universe, though, these terrorists have biotic powers granted by a drug called "Red Sand." The ruins happen to house plenty of Element Zero, which is used to make the drug, so you can see how the two forces would be at an impasse. Check out the short film below, or read our interview with the film's producer, director, and star for insights on the process. Mass Effect Trilogy coming November, brings original game to PS3 for the first timeSep 26, 2012 - ShacknewsSome people missed the boat on this whole "Mass Effect" thing, and were forced to watch passively from the sidelines as adulation turned to ending-based scorn. If you'd like to give it a whirl and don't mind being late to the party, you can wait until November 6 when BioWare releases all three games in one box. BioWare announced the set today, which packages Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 together for $59.99. The PC and Xbox 360 versions of the compilation will be available November 6, while the PlayStation 3 will get it sometime later. The announcement notes that this is the first time PS3 owners will get the chance to play through the original Mass Effect, and it will be available as a stand-alone game through the PlayStation Network as well. The announcement conspicuously doesn't mention downloadable content, though, so if you want to play extra missions like Mass Effect 2's Overlord or Mass Effect 3's Leviathan, you'll probably need to shell out some extra funds. BioWare is also attempting to bring back self-imposed game holidays like Mortal Monday with the announcement of "N7 Day," which will take place on November 7. Get it? The company promises in-game, online, and live events to celebrate the occasion. Mass Effect fan film builds on gap in series loreJun 13, 2012 - ShacknewsThe Mass Effect games have provided quite a bit of entertainment--and drama--for fans since 2007 when the first title launched, following the exploits of Commander Shepard and his team. The series has also spawned four books and several comics, as well as a number of mobile spin-offs. Now, it has inspired a fan film entitled Red Sand, starring the actor who voiced male Shepard in the series. Shacknews had the chance to talk with producer Paul DeNigris, director Caleb Evans and the film's star, Mark Meer, about the project. Currently in production at the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe, AZ, Red Sand goes 30-35 years before the events of the original Mass Effect and focuses on the Prothean ruins discovered on Mars and the powerful Element Zero that can refined into "red sand," an addictive drug that enhances a biotic's powers. Instead of Commander Shepard, the hero is Col. Jon Grissom, the first person to travel through the Charon Relay, which expanded the known universe for humanity. The movie poster The film started as a class project with the fan film Portal: No Escape serving as its impetus, said DeNigris, who is also the project's faculty adviser. Although he is not an avid gamer, he said the university "is so saturated with gamer culture" that it is hard not to know about pivotal video games in our current culture. "Mass Effect is certainly one of those." Evans, a student at the university, penned the story, but had to be careful not to infringe on the existing lore for the game. "The games cover so much information there is little room for interpretation, and the books cover a heavy amount of back story," he said. "So I did some digging and realized the discovery of the Prothean ruins on Mars was largely unexplained with little to no details surrounding it. I knew I had found the part in the timeline I needed." Grissom became the focal point for the film because he was already a known personality in the lore, Evans said. "The books explain his journey , but they do not explain his time before that, so I felt it's perfect to explain a little more about him." None of the other characters in the film, however, have any basis in the Mass Effect canon, although DeNigris said he feels Evans drew inspiration from some of Shepard's teammates in creating the film's other primary characters. Perhaps the biggest coup for the project was having Meer agree to play the role of Grissom. DeNigris sent a copy of the script to Meer, and he eagerly agreed to do the film. "I was happy to help the cause of education, and the chance to run around in the Arizona desert in space armor sounded too good to pass up," Meer said. "Paul and his students were willing to delay shooting for a couple of months until I could find a hole in my schedule." Meer said his experience as Shepard, playing the games, and reading the Mass Effect comics from Dark Horse have helped him in his portrayal of Grissom. "One of the concepts behind the film was to contrast a Parag...GameFly offering big discounts this weekendApr 6, 2012 - ShacknewsGameFly is running a huge digital sale this weekend, including some of the most popular franchises from the biggest publishers. Mass Effect 3 to include cut ME2 Citadel missionNov 29, 2011 - ShacknewsMass Effect 3 is giving BioWare another chance to include content that was originally planned for Mass Effect 2, according to lead writer Mac Walters. The cut mission took place on the Citadel, which played a major role in the ending of the first game. "That's the nice thing about trilogies," Walters said. "Sometimes you get a second chance." "There was a Mass Effect 2 plot that was a kind of callback to the first Mass Effect that was going to be on the Citadel, and we cut it," Walters told OXM. "But now it's made a resurrection in Mass Effect 3, so I'm happy, but I can't say what it is." He also joked about the challenges that came with the branching paths of Mass Effect 2. "Sometimes they're hurdles that we've given ourselves, so we kind of smack ourselves in the head and say 'What the hell were we thinking? Why did we do that?' The classic example is, 'Hey, let's make the ending of Mass Effect 2 a suicide mission where all your henchmen can possibly die, and Shepard can even die!' Oh right... and then we're gonna do another game after that. What the hell are we gonna do with all those guys?" He raises an excellent question, but we'll have to wait until the game launches on March 6, 2012 to find out the answer. Mass Effect movie adaptation detailedSep 21, 2011 - ShacknewsMass Effect is getting a film treatment, and a few of the additional details have slipped out. Following Comic-Con, Legendary Pictures held a fan Q&A which has revealed that the movie will, unsurprisingly, feature the male version of Shepard. When asked if the movie will be a trilogy, the production team simply responded: "We are really focused on making this a great movie, so we'll see where it takes us. We have to get the first one right to know whether there will be more." The Q&A (via Eurogamer) doesn't offer any casting hints, though it did say that Seth Green will not reprise his role as Joker. Legendary is working with BioWare on developing the story, with Dr. Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka are serving as executive producers. According to the Q&A, BioWare will "allow plot / character changes." Maybe Kaidan will actually be interesting this time around? Legendary has a solid history of co-producing smart sci-fi action films, like the Nolan Batman series, Watchmen, and Inception. It's currently also developing movies adaptations of the Gears of War and Warcraft franchises. Mass Effect 2 'Genesis' comic on XBLMMay 17, 2011 - Shacknews Mass Effect 2 If you felt the deep pangs of regret and jealousy upon learning that the PlayStation 3 version of Mass Effect 2 received a free motion comic lacking in the Xbox 360 version, there are two things you should know. First, the rest of the world envies your problems. Second, now you can get the "Genesis" motion comic on Xbox 360, for a price. The Xbox Live Marketplace now offers the comic for a cool $4 (320 MSP). It requires a copy of Mass Effect 2, lasts about 15 minutes, and lets you make some of Shepard's choices from the original Mass Effect and import them into a new game of ME2. Mass Effect 3, now delayed to early 2012, will come with some form of similar interactive story recap for anyone picking up the series fresh from that point. After all, if you can't see the ripples of your decisions playing out in the story, what's the point? That's kind of Mass Effect's thing.
