Nominate Marvel's Avengers for Steam Awards "Labor Of Love"Nov 24, 2021 - Community AnnouncementsNominations open November 24 to December 1Marvel's Avengers welcomes PlayStation-exclusive Spider-Man in new cinematic trailerNov 11, 2021 - EurogamerIt's been a long time coming, but Spider-Man is finally set to make his Marvel's Avengers debut - exclusively on PlayStation consoles, of course - at the end of this month, and developer Crystal Dynamics has offered a first proper look at the beleaguered live service game's take on the character in a new cinematic trailer. Spider-Man, who arrives somewhat later than his initially announced "early" 2021 release date, will make his Marvel's Avenger's debut alongside a new hero event, titled With Great Power, which sees Spidey joining forces with Black Widow and Ms. Marvel to stop a new AIM plan. "As a Hero accustomed to working solo," we were told previously, "he struggles with the new dynamics of working with a team. Will he join up full time with the Avengers, or stay independent in his fight against AIM?". There are hints of these particular personal conundrums for Spider-Man in his newly revealed cinematic trailer below. Read more PlayStation-exclusive Spider-Man finally arrives in Marvel's Avengers later this monthNov 4, 2021 - EurogamerAlmost exactly 15 months after it was revealed Spider-Man would be heading to Marvel's Avengers as a PlayStation-exclusive playable character, developer Crystal Dynamics has announced a release date for the much-delayed hero; he'll be swinging into action on 30th November as part of a relatively beefy update for the beleaguered live service game. Spider-Man was originally due to arrive "early" 2021, but players began to wonder if something was seriously amiss when the character, having failed to materialise in that initial launch window, was conspicuously absent from a development roadmap stretching all the way into "summer and beyond". Crystal Dynamics eventually moved to reassure fans that Spidey was still coming but his exact arrival date remained unclear - until now. Spider-Man will join the game as a playable hero on 30th November - for those on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, at least - and his arrival will be bolstered by character-specific story elements as part of the With Great Power hero event. Avengers removes "pay-to-win" microtransactions after backlashNov 2, 2021 - PCGamesNThe developers behind Marvel's Avengers have announced that Hero's Catalysts and Fragment Extractors will be removed from the real money store. These items boosted XP and fragment currency gains respectively, and their addition to the game's suite of optional microtransactions immediately drew the ire of players - both because of their pay-to-win implications, and because the developers promised prior to launch that in-game purchases would exclusively be cosmetic. "We apologise for not responding sooner to your concerns about the addition of paid consumables in the Marketplace," the devs say in a tweet. "We introduced them as an option for an evolving player base, and did not see them as pay-to-win since they don't offer power directly. After considering your feedback, we have decided that by the end of today we will remove Hero's Catalysts and Fragment Extractors for purchase. They will continue to be earnable rewards and those already owned are still usable." The boosters were initially added to the game shortly after its move to Xbox Game Pass in late September. In a pre-launch blog post back in 2020, the developers "committed that content purchasable with real money in Marvel's Avengers will be aesthetic-only additions, which will ensure we can keep the game fresh for years to come". Like any journey worth taking, there have been triumphs and tribulations, as well as lessons and learnings. Now, a year later, how we apply what we’ve learned and improve from it makes us better; and we are best defined by the company we keep and the friends we’ve made along the way. Let’s look briefly back at this last year and forward to what’s ahead. A Year of Heroes It has been immensely rewarding to see our community assemble to master their favorite Avengers’ moves, min-max their stats, and coordinate Strike Teams with their friends. We’ve also been thrilled to watch the community grow and see veterans welcoming new Heroes to the Avenger’s Initiative. While what each of us has achieved on our own is impressive, the full Marvel’s Avengers fanbase has performed heroic acts across the globe. Some fun stats to reflect on: Over 619 million Power Levels & 275 million Hero Levels have been earned 23 million HARM rooms have been completed 8 billion enemies have been defeated in the Avenger’s Initiative Abomination is the most defeated boss, coming in at 9.4 million times 23 million Drop Zone, 17 million Hero Missions, and 12 million Villain Sectors have been completed 9.6 billion Fragments have been found, 4.5 billion Catalysts recovered, 569.2 million Polychoron claimed, and 1.5 billion Upgrade Modules rewarded It is extraordinary to see how far we’ve come in just one year! Thank you for all of these victories! As for the War for Wakanda expansion, it’s obvious that many are enjoying time with the King. 3.4 million Hunter Crawlers and 50 million Scout Crawlers have been sent back to AIM in pieces 64.4 million Klaue Company mercs are rethinking their life choices Black Panther has defeated 153 million enemies across 9 million missions in Wakanda War for Wakanda has been a tremendous return for many of our past players as well as a welcoming gateway into Marvel’s Avengers for many players’ first time! The team at Crystal is proud of what we’ve achieved with War for Wakanda, and we hope everyone is enjoying such an immensely important character and world. A Year of Growing The year since launch has been a period of growth for our studio & team, our game, and our community. We opened a new studio (Hello Crystal Southwest!) and continued to refine our work-from-home environments. In mid-June 2021 we had a limited “soft re-opening” of our studios, using this period as a trial run for one-day fully reopening. Alas, as conditions have changed at each of our locations, we’ve adjusted those plans (since we always put the team’s health and safety first) and have extended our primarily work-from-home plans into early next year and beyond. We may still be apart, but we are always together. We’re now in the middle of the uniquely challenging task – finding the best way to support a hybrid “work-from-both" environment. Read on for the highlights and more details on what you can expect when you dive into our Marvel's Avengers Expansion, available now as a free update to anyone who owns the base game. STORY & WORLD To ensure our original War for Wakanda story does justice to such an important hero, our talented narrative team enlisted the help of well-known writer and Black Panther expert Evan Narcisse, author of the Rise of the Black Panther Marvel comics. Evan was particularly inspired by past Black Panther storylines, including Who is the Black Panther (2005), The Deadliest of the Species & Power (2009-2010), Black Panther - Long Live the King (2017), and A Nation Under Our Feet & Avengers of the New World (2016- 2018). In collaboration with Evan, the writing team felt it important to ensure this was a story with Wakanda at the center, although it takes place within a larger Avengers universe. As many of you know, Wakanda is a sovereign African nation and the most advanced civilization on Earth. Its technological advancement is fueled by Vibranium, a precious material found only in a meteor that crashed on Earth centuries ago. The kingdom is ruled by King T’Challa the Black Panther, and in War for Wakanda, T’Challa is faced with an unprecedented invasion that will not only put his strength to the test as the Black Panther, but as a king, a leader, and a brother. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36820719/393441698d318fb7a6da84839aca72df54c7a6c1.jpg This invasion is led by a familiar foe to fans of Black Panther - Ulysses Klaue. A rogue scientist with a dark secret and a darker grudge, Klaue has assembled an army of mercenaries equipped with deadly sonic technology, bankrolled by one of the world’s most sinister organizations. Klaue launches sonic fracking towers across Wakanda to extract the Vibranium from the ground, a devastating process that corrupts the Vibranium and creates clusters of deadly poisonous shards. This is how the Avengers get involved in War for Wakanda. After the A-Day disaster, Wakanda closed its borders and cut off all communication with the outside world. After the dangerous corrupted Vibranium starts to appear across the globe, the Avengers travel to Wakanda to offer their help to King T’Challa. The new Expansion unfolds in the jungles of Wakanda – a new Biome – and showcases both the rich and amazing history of this ancient, unconquered African country but also the futuristic technology of contemporary Wakanda. At the center is the Wakandan capital Birnin Zana, where our new Outpost is located. It features King T’Challa’s throne room from where he rules, and the command center where all important decisions regarding the country’s security take place. Shuri’s lab houses the nerve center for Wakanda’s Kimoyo network. The arrival of Black Panther, the new Wakanda biome, and a meaty new story campaign compose "the largest and most ambitious expansion since launch" and aims to "refresh the Marvel's Avengers experience." A new War Table debuted today that provides a rundown of what to expect in the free War for Wakanda expansion. The story centres around an invasion of Wakanda led by Ulysses Klaue, who has assembled an army of mercenaries armed with "deadly sonic technology" and spider-mechs. Klaue is after Wakanda's precious and powerful vibranium, and he's setting up sonic fracking towers throughout the nation in order to get to it. He's also apparently enlisted the help of Red Skull lieutenant Crossbones. This process creates corrupted spikes of vibranium that pop up around the world and spread toxic gas. The Avengers take note and reestablish contact with Wakanda, which had closed off all communication with the rest of the world in the wake of the A-Day disaster. Read the rest of the story... It will also introduce villain Ulysses Klaue, and it has now been revealed that a second named villain will back him up: Crossbones. Despite boasting many of the biggest hero names in the Marvel universe, Square Enix's Avengers game is sorely lacking in proper named villains for players to fight. Taskmaster, M.O.D.O.K., Abomination, sort-of Loki, and that's about it. It was already reported that Ulysses Klaue (as played by Andy Serkis in the movies) would be coming in the next DLC, now players can expect Crossbones too (thanks, GameInformer). It kicked off on 29th July and ends later today, 1st August, sending interest in the action game on PC soaring. Looking at SteamDB (thanks, TheGamer), the game usually averages around only a few hundred concurrent users at a time, but the freeplay event has set a 24-hour peak of 10,161 players - with 10,121 online right now at the time of writing. It doesn't quite hit the heights of its launch period - Marvel's Avengers peaked at almost 32,000 Steam players when it released last September - but it's a considerable spike for a game that had hitherto struggled to get even 1000 simultaneous PC players online. Read more The Player Count for Marvel's Avengers Has Dropped 96% Since Launching 2 Months Ago on SteamNov 11, 2020 - GitHypAfter being listed as one of the most anticipated games of 2020 by most news outlets, Marvel's Avengers failed to crack Steam's Top 40 Most Played list with a peak of only 29k concurrent players when it launched two months ago. Although the weak launch of Marvel's Avengers didn't seem that bad back in September when compared to the average daily lows of older loot shooters like Destiny 2 and Warframe; retention is key with games as a service, and since its launch, Avengers has seen one of the worst player base drop-offs ever for a new triple-A game. Over this past weekend, Marvel's Avengers peaked with just 1,190 concurrent players – a 96% decline compared to its debut on Steam. And the average player counts haven't been any better with only 752 players per hour so far in November. So, what happened? Hype levels for Marvel's Avengers were at an all-time high back when Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics announced they would be revealing gameplay for the first time at E3 2019. That same summer, Avengers: Endgame became the highest-grossing film of all time at the box office and the developer's new take on the popular franchise was in the perfect position to become the next big thing in the gaming industry. However, unlike the films, reactions online quickly became mixed leading up to the game's launch as fans were upset by the character design choices and later concerned that the short campaign would ironically lack any sort of meaningful endgame content – similar to what we saw last year with EA and BioWare's disastrous attempt at a multiplayer loot shooter/live-service game, Anthem. While Square Enix has declined to release specific sales numbers for the troubled game that's currently $59.99 on Steam, the low player counts align with the publisher's financial figures reported earlier this week showing a $48 million loss following the launch of Marvel's Avengers. With the player base continuing to decline each week and feedback from gamers still mixed, it's unlikely the developers will be able to snap the Avengers back to life this time... then again, EA says they're still working on Anthem… and they don't have Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man to help save the day.
