Mages Initiation Reign of the Elements

Mage's Initiation v.1.1 Update ReleasedFeb 21, 2019 - Community AnnouncementsHey, everyone! A new build of Mage's Initiation has been rolled out. It addresses the majority of bugs and issues that have been reported since launch. This build won't break your existing save-games and will allow you to continue playing from where you left off. However, to get the optimal experience, starting a new game is recommended. The main feature addition to this patch is the inclusion of a "no combat" mode, which allows you to disable random combat encounters (in the forest and wastelands) completely. Only boss battles will be mandatory, but they, too will be much easier. This feature is intended to allow people to play through the game more like a pure adventure game if they don't want to deal heavily with the combat or RPG elements. To use "no combat" mode, simply drag the Combat Difficulty slider all the way to the left. You'll see a textual indication saying that combat is disabled in the lower text window. Some experimental code has also been added, which attempts to unhook the player, should they get stuck on scenery objects (i.e. bushes, rocks, trees, logs etc.) and unable to run during combat. A full list of further additions and bug-fixes is listed below. The new v.1.1 build is now available on Windows, Linux, and MacOs. Your game should automatically update to the newest version on Steam. Thanks! Patch Notes v1.1 ***WARNING SPOILERS BELOW*** Updated to AGS Engine v.3.4.3 (Potentially fixes Steam/GOG plugin crashes on start-up and removes artifact lines from sprite edges in OpenGL mode). Fixed a bug that was causing the Round of Ale to be sold for 19 gold coins instead of 14. Fixed textual misinformation on the title screen when hovering over the "Verb Coin" button. The text description has been updated to be more accurate. Fixed a bug when playing with the Verb Coin interface where sometimes the tooltip text descriptions would disappear permanently. Fixed a rectangular graphical glitch near the river's drain at evening/night, when the screen is tinted darker shades of blue. Fixed a bug where manually entering the combination code for the Hallowed Hall could stop working. Fixed a bug that caused the Sapphire Brooch (Marin's Tear) item to be collected from Strof's cupboard, even if you no longer had it in your possession when your items were stolen by the Redcaps. Fixed a bug that caused the game to freeze (and the death GUI not to appear) if you reached 0 health during combat and had the Twin Sapphire gem equipped in your Conductor, which regenerates Health Points back up to 25%. Fixed a freeze that occurred in Sir Hamfed's manor when attempting to access the inventory GUI while using the Verb Coin and viewing the cabinet close-up. Fixed a fatal crash when talking to Fend in the showdown when playing with the voices disabled. Fixed an issue with the Verb Coin and Compact interfaces where the master key could not be clicked on the back door while inside the Redcaps' Cooking Hut. Fixed an issue with the Verb Coin and Compact inter...Patch v1.0b Now Available on "beta" branch (Windows Only)Feb 12, 2019 - Community AnnouncementsHey, everybody! We've got a new patch for the game ready! The majority of bugs and issues reported since launch have been addressed. This build won't break your existing save-games and it should allow you to continue playing seamlessly from where you left off. Due to the experimental nature of this patch, it has not been released on the main branch yet. We will need some players to opt-in to the "beta" branch and play through the game to make sure everything is in working order. Once it has been deemed safe and bug-free, we'll roll it out as v1.1 to the default branch for Windows, Mac, and Linux. For more details and instructions on how to opt-in to the beta branch, see here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/270610/discussions/0/1777136225045720120/Quest for Glory-inspired Mage's Initiation is out nowJan 31, 2019 - PC GamerAfter a decade in development—I previewed it five years ago!—Mage’s Initiation has finally launched. It’s a point and click adventure heavily inspired by Sierra classics like Kings Quest and Quest for Glory. Like the latter, it also dips into the realm of RPGs, complete with magical specialisations and optional combat. Watch the launch trailer above. Reminding me a bit of Shannara, the modern world has been destroyed and a magical one has sprung up out of its ashes. Technology has been replaced by elemental magic, skyscrapers by wizard towers and I have no idea where goblins and bird-people fit in. They’re bad news, apparently, and just a couple of the obstacles getting in the way of protagonist D’arc becoming a full mage.  No teen wizard adventure would be complete without big stakes, of course, so as well as passing his initiation test, D’arc will need to save the kingdom. That’s a lot of pressure for someone just trying to get their magic license.  If you don’t fancy getting into fights and Quest for Glory has no nostalgic hold over you, it’s possible to play Mage’s Initiation more like a classic point and click, using spells to solve puzzles instead of burning people to death. Expect multiple story paths, too, with in-game choices pushing you in different directions.  Mage’s Initiation is out now on Steam, GOG and the Humble Store for £10.25/$13.49. Mage s Initiation is questing for glory in stores todayJan 30, 2019 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunMage’s Initiation: Reign Of The Elements is yet another Quest For Glory-inspired old-school adventure RPG hybrid, this time from Himalaya Studios. It feels weird to even say that, given that we’ve gone decades with nothing much comparable released, but this one comes not long after Hero-U: Rogue To Redemption. For those who didn’t grow up playing point-and-click (or parser-based) adventures in the 90s, you’re looking at a blend of traditional inventory-based puzzling and real-time battles, this time with an elemental magic focus. Check out the launch trailer below. (more…) Mage's Initiation is an adventure-RPG inspired by Quest for GloryNov 30, 2018 - PC GamerI first wrote about Mage’s Initiation for a preview five long years ago, and now the adventure-RPG hybrid finally has a release date. It’s taken the team around ten years to make and will be released into the wilds on January 30.  There aren’t many adventure romps in the style of Quest for Glory kicking around these days (which is disgraceful). In Mage’s Initiation, you’re a teen wizard about to be unleashed upon the world to put your skills to the test via three quests. Also, the kingdom needs to be saved, so I guess you could help out with that, too?  Magic can help you solve puzzles, but it can also fry any goblins trying to start a fight with you. One of four elemental specialisations can be picked at the start, conferring unique spells for use in and out of combat. You can try to avoid fights, however, and play Mage’s Initiation more like a traditional point and click adventure, though one with branching paths and some light RPG character progression. I jumped back in after five years away and, while I’m not sure how much has changed since 2013, it still has a nostalgic hold over me, calling to mind adventures in not just Quest for Glory, but games like King’s Quest, too. And it boasts some cracking background art, though the higher resolution pixel art used for the character models looks a bit out of place.  Mage’s Initiation uses three different adventure game interfaces, which you get to pick at the start but can switch between whenever you want. Lamentably, there’s no parser for the masochists, so you’ll have to settle for either a verb coin, a compact interface that brings up a menu when you click on an object or the traditional Sierra icon bar.  Himalaya Studios, previously Anonymous Game Developers Interactive, has plenty of experience working with Sierra-style games. Before Mage’s Initiation, it made free remakes of Sierra games, as well as a Leisure Suit Larry-inspired adventure about a pathetic, middle-aged fella trying to find love.    Mage's Initiation New Teaser VideoNov 28, 2018 - Community AnnouncementsAfter a decade of hard work, Mage's Initiation finally has a release date!
