I’m sure this happens to me a lot, but just off the top of my head, Killzone, XCOM, and Dark Souls all first got my attention this way. The trailer for Oninaki – an upcoming, classic-style JRPG from the I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear gang at Square Enix’s Tokyo RPG Factory – features these awesome looking goblin lads on a mural. I’m not sure if they’re for certain in the game yet, but I’m already quite into the idea of getting a chance to meet some. This is the opening of Lost Sphear. After bonking some bunny-mutants to death in a nearby field, they discover that their idyllic hometown has blinked out of existence, replaced by a gaping white void. But, soon enough, one of our heroes has a dream that reveals that he and he alone possesses mysterious power that can restore these lost objects through the power of memories. Together, the gang embark on a quest to save the world from ruin. (more…) Lost Sphear reviewFeb 2, 2018 - EurogamerIn most video games we play the role of restorer. The world we enter is broken in some way, and we must piece it together again. In Chrono Trigger, perhaps the greatest of all the 16-bit era Japanese RPGs, this work is carried out along generational lines. A town mayor ruins the lives of his townspeople through greed and avarice. Travel back in time, locate one of his ancestral mothers and offer her a life-changing gift and she vows to always bring up her children to promote kindness and generosity. Return to the future and you find the mayor is transformed into a philanthropist. Order is restored. Lost Sphear, the second game from Tokyo RPG Factory, a Japanese team founded to make games that rekindle the spirit and scale of the Super Nintendo classics, has no such ingenuity, and abandons all metaphor. Here, parts of the world have literally dropped off the map: where there was once a town, a forest or a mountain, now there is nothing but a white void, as if the related Unity asset had been accidentally dropped into a hapless programmer's recycling bin. You play as Kanata, a "low born" orphan who, with the support of his friends - the affable Lumina, the optimistic Locke, the gruffly rude Van and, later, a few others - must put the world back together, by turning memories into tectonic jigsaw pieces that fill the gaps. These memories must be collected with the usual sticky-fingered zeal of the JRPG protagonist (here, as in so many early examples of the genre, you freely plunder from any treasure chests left lying about unlocked in a townsperson's home, often while they look-on, unfussed), either looted from chests, collected from monsters or, in one of the game's stronger novelties, carefully carved from written lines of NPC dialogue. Collect the correct cocktail and the missing asset can be alchemised and restored, allowing you to enter the resurrected building, or to progress across a previously vanished section of the map. I’m here with a short message for you from the director of the game, Atsushi Hashimoto: “In this title, we prepared many new features along with a great deal of improvements from I am Setsuna. Various areas have been upgraded and the overall volume, in terms of the scenario, has also increased significantly. As such, it was a difficult task for the development team with continuous struggles along the way, but I firmly believe we were able to develop a game that players will most definitely enjoy. We would love for everyone to pick up and play the game!“ Lost Sphear Director Atsushi Hashimoto If you’ve had a chance to play the game so far, what do you think of it? Possessing the unique power of Memory that enables him to restore what's been lost, he and his friends set out on a mission to put things right. The game won't be out until early next year, but you can get a taste of what's to come by way of the demo that was released today on Steam.  The demo showcases some of the game's central features, including real-time combat and the Artefact system, "which allows players to utilize restored Memories to customize their user interface, obtain player bonuses, as well as advance the story."    The controls are pretty brutal, and will presumably (hopefully) be properly implemented for the full release. But for now there's no mouse support, so maneuvering through menus requires the WASD keys, with the spacebar to select. The standard save option isn't available, but you can quicksave using the "1" key, and once you're into the game's menu—accessible via "J"—the only way out is to hit "K."    There's nothing provided in the way of story or context for your actions, either. Almost immediately after the demo begins, you're ordered by a military leader of some sort to return a large rock from the white, void glowing into which it's apparently fallen. Everyone seems thoroughly impressed by your ability to do so, but how you came about that particular ability to save the day—and who these guys are that you're helping out—is entirely a mystery.    It's possible that more is revealed later on in the demo (I didn't finish it) but at least in the early going it's definitely more of a mechanical tutorial than a meaningful slice of the game. But it's free—big plus—and it's not an overly large download, so if you're interested in Lost Sphear (and I do think it looks like an interesting game so far), it's definitely worth a look.    Lost Sphear is set for release on January 23, 2018.    I am Setsuna follow-up Lost Sphear now has a demo on Switch, PS4, and PCDec 7, 2017 - EurogamerA demo for Square Enix's upcoming I am Setsuna successor Lost Sphear is now available to download in Europe and North America on Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam. Lost Sphear tells the story of Kanata, a self-taught swordsman who wakes one day to find that his hometown is disappearing. As tends to be the case with these things, it's up to Kanata and friends to thwart the forces of evil and restore the world. Lost Sphear is the second title from Square's Tokyo RPG Factory, and, like I am Setsuna before it, is a heavily nostalgic take on the classic J-RPGs of the 90s. It shares a similarly delicate aesthetic to its predecessor but, to my eyes at least, looks to have more personality - what with the pyramids and pirate ships and smoggy Victorian cityscapes and such - than the pretty but ultimately rather bland I am Setsuna. Keep up with everything Lost Sphear related on our Square Enix Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts! #LostSphearLost Sphear story trailer showcases combat, memories, and the moonOct 24, 2017 - PC GamerThe retro-styled JRPG Lost Sphear, announced in May by I Am Setsuna developer Tokyo RPG Factory, follows the adventures of Kanata, a young boy whose hometown has begun to disappear. To restore what's been lost, he and his friends "set out to rebuild the world around them with the power of Memory by manifesting thoughts into matter."  I said at the time that the description didn't really give me a firm grasp of what it's all about. Now Square Enix has released a new story trailer, and I'll be honest—I still have questions.  Kanata's power of Memory is backed up by the power of the sword, which isn't all that terribly surprising given that this is an RPG. But the whys and wherefores remain hazy—I don't feel like I know any more about the game than I did when the announcement trailer went up—and that bit at the end about the moon really comes out of nowhere. I wouldn't want to have everything spelled out for me in advance, uncovering the mystery is obviously an important part of a good RPG experience, but a little bit of clarification probably wouldn't hurt. Lost Sphear is available for pre-purchase on Steam for $50/£35/€50, and is set for release on January 23, 2018. There's also a website to poke at up at lostsphear.com
