OnLive "can't predict" when iPad app will launchDec 8, 2011 - EurogamerOnLive has no idea when its iPad app will launch. Following this morning's announcement that the cloud gaming service had begun rolling out on tablet devices, users noticed only the Android version was available. Now, over 14 hours later, the iOS app is yet to materialise. "Unfortunately, we can't predict when the OnLive iPad app will be officially released," a spokesperson told Eurogamer. "We'll certainly post it on our website when it is available." Meanwhile, OnLivefans reports that the iOS app will not allow purchases to be made from within the app - unlike the Android version. It claims the reason for this is Apple's in-app purchase rules - Apple requires a 30 per cent cut of the profits from any purchases made within any app downloaded from the App Store. Fans are speculating that OnLive may be forced to remove in-app purchases from the iOS app to secure its release. OnLive this morning announced its move into the tablet market and launched its free Android app, which works on Android tablets and smartphones. The new client brings the full OnLive experience to tablet devices, using existing payment options and working with the entire catalogue of nearly 200 titles. One OnLive version of a game works across all devices, with cloud saving intact. Accompanying the roll-out of the app is the announcement of a £39.99 Universal Wireless Controller, a new Bluetooth OnLive control pad that communicates directly with most tablet devices and works with almost all of the games on OnLive. It comes with a USB dongle that plugs into PCs and Macs, but it will in the future also work with other connected devices, such as Blu-ray players and TVs. It launches on the OnLive store imminently. Free Android and iPad apps will launch according to mobile app store certifications from 2am Thursday 8th December. The Android app works with the Amazon Kindle Fire in the US and will do so in the UK when the device launches on these shores. One OnLive version of a game works across all devices, with cloud saving intact. In the UK the focus is on Wi-fi (OnLive recommends 2-3MB connections for tablet use), with 3G networks unable to cope. In the US OnLive runs on 4G as well as over Wi-fi. A new logo - a small hand touch gesture - will appear on 25 games. This means OnLive has worked with a game developer to make its game tablet-friendly. Grove demonstrated Hidden Path's Tower Defense game Defense Grid Gold to Eurogamer at a meeting in London, with new touch-screen controls and features, including pinch and zoom. Rockstar Games has created a touch version of the Team Bondi detective thriller L.A. Noire. Rockstar has spent time reworking the interface, incorporating touch for crime scenes and gesturing and swiping for movement. L.A. Noire goes live on OnLive "if not the end of this week then very shortly". "It was great for us that they turned around and said they wanted to do this because they wanted to try this out," Bruce Grove, general manager of OnLive UK, told Eurogamer. "We're also working on a few other games that will be pretty cool to get onto this service." OnLive will give a free copy of Lego Batman to anyone who downloads the mobile client. This game has a Virtual Pad control set-up, which incorporates virtual joysticks and virtual face buttons onto the tablet screen. OnLive has mapped its Virtual Pad to 25 games on the service. We've moved from the world of being restricted by the content I can put onto the tablet device to, I can play anything." "What we've done is create a multi-screen environment," Grove continued. "You could have two different views of the same game. I could have a map up on one and a screen doing something else. A convincing photo of Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes from a product poster provided the evidence. It was found by Lego fansite BrickTuts. The game is rumoured for a 2012 release, which would coincide with the arrival of new blockbuster Batman film The Dark Knight Rises. Lego also has a new fleet of Lego Super Heroes toy boxes to roll out next year. Lego Batman remains one of Traveller's Tales' best Lego video games. Eurogamer's Lego Batman review awarded 9/10. WBI's president Martin Tremblay mentioned the two games in an LA Times interview, along with a mystery title featuring a DC Comics character. It also has a number of casual online titles in development for younger players at a new Montreal studio, based on various Warner brands. The first Lego Batman title launched back in 2008, picking up a very respectable 8/10 from Eurogamer's Dan Whitehead. The publisher has had a pretty impressive 2011 so far, with Mortal Kombat, hit downloadable RPG Bastion and Batman: Arkham City all under its belt. WB Interactive exec shares successes, teases new DC superhero gameOct 18, 2011 - ShacknewsWith high-grossing franchises like Batman, Mortal Kombat, and multiple LEGO titles, Warner Bros. has been largely successful in its recent forays into the video game business. President of Warner Interactive, Martin Tremblay, asserts that he expects 2011 to be the company's most profitable year in interactive entertainment, "on track to generate close to $1 billion in sales." Today's release of Batman: Arkham City for consoles is sure to help matters. An article in the Los Angeles Times examines Warner Bros. path to success in the video game space, a path that continues to elude most movie studios that try to get their feet wet with making video games. Warner Interactive produced its first title in 2005, but quickly realized that while it had a good number of intellectual properties that could serve as the basis for great video games, it didn't yet have the ability to make high-quality titles. To solve that problem Warner Interactive has spent the last four years or so buying successful game production companies and their associated LEGO, Mortal Kombat and Arkham franchises. The most notable of these acquisitions was Arkham Asylym and City developer Rocksteady, though the acquisitions of Traveler's Tales (LEGO games) and Midway Games (Mortal Kombat) have both proven quite profitable as well. The publisher has adopted an approach with recent games (especially movie-based tie-ins) meant to avoid the common trappings of games that are made and rushed out the door. "The movie-based games business is broken, and for teen-targeted titles, we're going to try and distance ourselves from the movies so the game stands by itself," Tremblay said. In addition to the Dark Knight's highly anticipated return to video games (and the new Nolan-directed film, due out in nine months), Warner Bros. is releasing The Lord of the Rings: War in the North on November 1, and will also have a game featuring Hobbits done prior to the release of Peter Jackson's film "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in December 2012. The company is also working on two new LEGO sequels--one for Batman and one for Harry Potter--that are due out in November of next year as well. Tremblay also teased a new game based on a "superhero from Warner's DC Comics unit," but wouldn't share any more details at this time. Let the speculation and anticipation begin! (Personally, I'm hoping that we'll finally see a proper Superman game.) To put Warner Interactive's recent success into perspective, research firm Ipsos OTX reported that Batman: Arkham Asylum sold 4.3 million copies. Hype on sites like Metacritic is already tracking higher for City than Asylum, and Warner Interactive's sales-profits for the publisher should also increase significantly with Arkham City sales, now that Rocksteady is owned under the Warner Interactive umbrella.
