Killer Instinct

Pentiment and Grounded weren't the only Microsoft games announced for Switch todayFeb 21, 2024 - VG247Obviously titles like Grounded and Pentiment were the big reveals in terms of Microsoft games on Switch today, but there were actually a few more announced too. In fact it's five more, to be specific, all of them being classic titles from Banjo Kazooie developer Rare, all coming to Nintendo Switch Online. First up, there's Snake Rattle 'n' Roll, a game originally released on the NES and Sega Mega Drive, where you have to eat various creatures in order to gain enough weight to ring a bell, opening the door to the next level (yeah, a bit of a weird one, I know). Next up is R.C. Pro-Am, a racing game for the NES, arcade, and Mega Drive that saw you controlling radio-controlled cars, where you had to fight your opponents across the race track, collecting power-ups along the way. Battletoad fans out there will also be happy to see the arrival of the SNES title Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, a beat 'em up where you play as two toads, Rash and Pimple, on a journey to save the world. Fighting game fans will also be happy, as the original Killer Instinct is also coming to Switch Online. And lastly, there's also the N64 classic action game Blast Corps, a title where you control various vehicles with the express purpose of destroying things like buildings and farms that are all in the way of a nuclear missile carrier. Earlier this week, Killer Instinct turned 10, as much as that might age some of you. And developer Iron Galaxy shared in a recent blog post all of the big changes coming to the game, including the base game being free for everyone. Previously, on Xbox One, the game was available as a free-to-play title, but on PC you had to buy it outright. Now, the base game will be free-to-play on all platforms, including Xbox One, Series X/S, and PC. The Definitive Edition of the game will also no longer exist, instead being replaced by the Anniversary Edition. This new edition is a "premium upgrade" for those that want to unlock all 29 fighters and things like skins and accessories; don't worry about those of you that already own the Definitive Edition, as you'll get an upgrade to the Anniversary Edition free of charge. This new version also comes with VIP double XP booster, specialty holiday accessories, and more. For some reason, the Definitive Edition app with developer interviews, concept art, and the soundtrack, as well as Xbox KI Classic 1 & 2 are being removed from the Anniversary Edition, though you can still download them if you owned the Definitive Edition. It's EVO at the moment, essentially Christmas for the fighting game community, and there have already been plenty of announcements that players have been plenty excited about. One of the most surprising, though, is that yesterday (August 5), it was announced that Killer Instinct would be getting an update later this year to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Fighting game player and YouTuber Maximilian Dood and head of Killer Instinct James Goddard shared the news following some exhibition matches, where it was announced the game would be receiving a series of improvements. "Our friends Iron Galaxy are back!" tweeted the official Killer Instinct Twitter account. "And together, we’re bringing you Killer Instinct's free 10th Anniversary Update later this year – including a balance update, improved matchmaking, and 4K support for Series X|S. More info coming soon!" No more specifics were shared outside of that, but it's an exciting prospect for players that have stuck with the game after all this time. God, look at him. Those teeth, those bulging biceps. The cocksure attitude and the shoe seven times too big for the foot it’s loosely hanging onto. Oh christ, it has horns now. I’m sure it makes sense: in a fighting game, you probably want your characters to be decisively punchable. And boy, I sure would love to deck Rash right about now. But if Killer Instinct‘s Game Pass players on PC had to be stuck with only one character (and they are, as it happens) why did it have to be him? However, players are discovering a bug with the PC Game Pass version, making it so the only playable character is Rash from Battletoads. Killer Instinct publisher Microsoft says it is aware of the issue, and tweeted on 26th July to say the problem is being worked on. But, as of today, players are still reporting the bug has yet to be fixed, and according to one eagle-eyed Twitter user the issue is due to Game Pass providing PC players with the Xbox files for the game.
