Just Cause 4

A new Just Cause open-world game is in developmentJun 6, 2022 - PCGamesNIn advance of the big reveals at Summer Game Fest, Square Enix has rather offhandedly confirmed Just Cause 5 - or, at the very least, that a "new title" in the Just Cause open-world game franchise is in development, presumably at regular developer Avalanche Studios. Just Cause 4 arrived way back in December 2018 to semi-enthusiastic reviews, and since then we haven't heard a peep out of the franchise - except for the possibility of a Just Cause movie from the creator of John Wick. More recently, Square Enix confirmed in May that it was selling many of its Western studios to Embracer Group, including the makers of Deus Ex and Tomb Raider. Just Cause and Rage 2 developer Avalanche Studios was not part of that sale because Square Enix doesn't own them - but the publisher does own Just Cause. Now, in an investor briefing for the fiscal year (thanks, ResetEra), Square Enix confirms that "the Just Cause franchise will remain our IP," and furthermore, it is "developing a new title in the franchise." Epic's selection of free PC games for the week is live, and there are some excellent giveaways here, with both a massive triple-A title and an indie title you might've overlooked. This rotation includes the sandbox mayhem of Just Cause 4 and the narrative-driven road trip of Wheels of Aurelia, and both are now yours for free. Just Cause 4 got a more reserved response than its immediate predecessors, but if you're looking for open-world games in which things blow up real nice, it's tough to go wrong with a Rico Rodriguez adventure. The game's just over a year old now, and still currently sells for around $39.99 USD, which makes 'free' a heck of a deal. If you're looking for something lower-key, Wheels of Aurelia sets you on a road trip through Italy in the 1970s, getting a new perspective on this era of the country while digging out bits of your character's past and meeting a host of other strangers. I struggle to run to shelter in the strong winds so grapple hook the short distance to a protective wall. As I hunker down I can see the glimpses of the base's disintegration through breaks in the dust. Fuel tanks shred and explode in the gale, Black Hand vehicles and soldiers whip past in the wind - anything without concrete foundations is fair game for the storm. When the weather settles down, the enemy base is a wreck. It would take me ten minutes and a ton of explosives to do what the storm has done in 30 seconds. When Just Cause 4 works as advertised it's an incredible show, marrying an explosion-filled open world and the stunts and gadgets of a Mission Impossible movie with truly awesome extreme weather systems. However, those moments when all the parts of the sandbox come together are crushingly rare, and what's left is a game that's less coherent than its predecessor. To me, the Just Cause series has always seemed more generous than other sandbox games. Tools and terrain aren't drip fed to you through the campaign, but are instead immediately available. As soon as you're through Just Cause 4's opening missions you have the entire island of Solis open to you and you're free to wingsuit, grapple, and parachute across it. Unlike Just Cause 3, that attached a progression system to your mobility gear, in this game your parachute and wingsuit both arrive fully-upgraded. All of this this means that after half an hour of playing I'm reminded of the simple joy of gliding over a luscious land, tipping my arms and swooping between the supports of a bridge. We're sorely missing tearing dictatorships apart with an unbreakable grapple hook and only a new Just Cause game can scratch that itch. Ever since it emerged that Just Cause dev Avalanche Studios had been busy working on a big new title, the wait for a fourth entry to the high-octane series has been agonising. The Swedish developer might already be very busy with Rage 2 and Generation Zero, but the small matter of making another triple-A title appears to not be beyond the company. We're not complaining, of course: now we've seen Just Cause 4 in action and know lots about the upcoming action-adventure already, we're itching to get behind the wheel of many weird and wonderful machines and strap on Rico's wingsuit once again. Join us as we break down all the crucial and up-to-date information about Just Cause 4, from the beautiful biomes of its South American setting, the latest trailers, and the satisfying Swiss Army Knife that is Rico's grappling hook. The latest destructive adventure for Rico Rodriguez launches in December which is now, astoundingly, next month. So if you're rushing to get your PC in line for some sandbox explosions, Avalanche and Square Enix have happily obliged - and we've got you covered with the full list of specs. Even if you managed to play Just Cause 3 alright, the fourth entry might push you toward an upgrade - at least if you want to go beyond the bottom options and crank up the visual experience. The 2015 game already had some stiff CPU requirements if you wanted to get the most out of the robust (and ridiculous) physics simulation, and Just Cause 4 is no exception. Just Cause 4‘s third and final expansion Danger Rising brings an end to the series yarn about ludicrous chaos, secretly evil government agencies, and demons(?). And like the final chapter of any great work of cultural significance, the conclusion of Just Cause will feature the most important element of storytelling: Kick-flipping hoverboards. A future update will extend the weirdly short nights of the in-game day cycle, for starters. More importantly, Rico will get to change the time of day by parking his bum in a comfy chair and watching the world go by, attracting flocks of wild animals to hang out as he idles. Sit down and before you know it, it’ll be night and you’ll be surrounded by goats. A great many ill-advised nights out have been sparked by animal magnetism, I’m told.
