If you were to examine my face during these moments, noting the hollow look in my eyes as my cursor hovers over a button labelled Do it , you might suspect some crisis of conscience. Perhaps I ve started to doubt the cause my small team of mercenaries has been fighting for? Maybe killing hundreds of nameless soldiers in exchange for cash is part of the problem? Nope. That s not it. Far from it. What holds my trigger finger is the knowledge of what comes after I ve taken the shot. Just like its predecessors from the 90s, JA: Rage is a game of two halves. It s a turn-based strategy affair in which your small team of elite, grizzled mercenaries trudges through a hot jungle. They take on entire armies of laughably evil bad guys while making quips about how good they are at doing exactly that. But it s also a game about ensuring your mercs remain armed to the teeth over the course of what will be a long and trying campaign. (more…) Jagged Alliance: Rage rumbles in the jungle todayDec 6, 2018 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunJagged Alliance: Rage, direct sequel to Sir-Tech’s tactical classic Jagged Alliance 2, has launched. Originally due out in September, it just kinda disappeared into the fog one day before launch. Now it’s back, a bit more wild-eyed than before. Maybe it’s seen things out there. Maybe Cliffhanger Productions wanted to polish it up – we’ll probably never know. Anyway, JA: Rage is set twenty years after the original, and stars many of the original, now-aged mercenaries, pulled out of retirement for one last, potentially suicidal job. It’s out now at budget price, with a launch trailer below. (more…) Jagged Alliance: Rage is delayed to DecemberSep 26, 2018 - PC Gamer Just one day ahead of its scheduled September 27 release, Jagged Alliance: Rage, the latest resurrection of the turn-based tactical RPG series, has been delayed. It's now slated to be out on December 6.  As usual, a specific reason for the delay wasn't given: A rep said only that it "needs a little more time in the oven," whatever that means. To soften the blow of the delay, HandyGames—that's THQ Nordic's indie-focused publishing label—dropped a new trailer showcasing some raging gameplay. Jagged Alliance: Rage is something of a twist on the JA formula because instead of controlling a full-sized merc outfit, you're in charge of just a handful of them, with no reinforcements to fall back on—and they're not exactly in the prime of their lives, either. The new game is set 20 years after the first, and all that time in the merc business has inflicted a physical and psychological toll.   As Fraser said when the first gameplay trailer was released, that grim setup is a bit at odds with the cartoonish visual style, but I hope that developer Cliffhanger Productions is able to do something interesting with it. Jagged Alliance: Rage will be available on Steam, and there's a site with more info for your perusing pleasure at jaggedalliance.com. Jagged Alliance: Rage delayed only one day before launchSep 26, 2018 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun “So it turns out Jagged Alliance: Rage is not-terrible,” our Alec declared in his cheery way after playing the latest revival of the venerated real-time tactical combat series. It was surprising, seeing as many other attempts have ended up bleh, but even more surprising is that it was due to launch barely six weeks after being announced. Well, that part at least was too good to be true. Having previously planned to launch it tomorrow, September 27th, publishers THQ Nordic today announced Jagged Alliance: Rage is now due December 6th. I’ve asked, and they say the delay is for “Balancing and fine-tuning.” To tide folks over, they have blorped a new trailer. (more…) Watch Jagged Alliance: Rage's first gameplay trailerSep 14, 2018 - PC GamerDevelopers keep trying to bring back Jagged Alliance, without much success. There was the misguided MMO, Jagged Alliance Online, in 2012; the scaled back remake of Jagged Alliance 2, Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, also in 2012; and finally the Kickstarted Jagged Alliance: Flashback in 2013, which wasn’t very good either. Now there’s Jagged Alliance: Rage, developed by the same studio behind the MMO. It was announced last month and now there’s some gameplay footage to go along with it.  Rage is set 20 years after the first game, in a jungle full of drug-fuelled enemies. You drop in with a team of battered veterans who, along with gun-toting foes to worry about, must deal with dehydration and psychological trauma. It sounds a bit grim, in stark contrast to the cartoon aesthetic.  Over on the official site there are a few more details, including character biographies for the three revealed mercenaries. Expect two-player co-op, adventure elements mixed in with the tactical shenanigans and ‘rage skills’. The latter are unique abilities that get increasingly more powerful as fights continue.  Will this be the game to finally live up to the ‘90s originals? I’m not going to hold my breath.  Jagged Alliance: Rage is due out on Steam on September 27.  Jagged Alliance: Rage comes sneaking out of the jungle in three weeksSep 5, 2018 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunJagged Alliance: Rage – a modern sequel to a turn-based tactics classic – will launch on September 27th according to publisher THQ Nordic. This comes as some surprise, as it feels like it was just a couple weeks ago that the game was announced at all. Because it was. While I do have my reservations (I’m a huge fan of Jagged Alliance 2 and its still-active mod scene), Alec’s reassurances that the new one doesn’t seem too bad have helped. Fingers crossed for this one, as I don’t think my poor, battered heart could take another bad Jagged Alliance. Below, a new trailer featuring some of our old favourite mercs from JA2. (more…) So it turns out Jagged Alliance: Rage is not-terribleAug 16, 2018 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunY’know what? I don’t hate it. Which, after 19 years of hurt (the remarkable JA2 mod scene aside), is happy progress for once-beloved turn-based mercenary combat series Jagged Alliance. There’s a whole mess of things wrong with newly-announced latest comeback-apparent Jagged Alliance: Rage, but a few hours with early code has me thinking there’s a lot right with its core. (more…) Jagged Alliance: Rage! is a turn-based strategy game about old, broken mercsAug 14, 2018 - PC GamerIt's been awhile since we've had a new Jagged Alliance to play with, and the last one, the Kickstarter-funded Flashback from 2013, was not very good. But THQ Nordic isn't giving up: The publisher announced today that Cliffhanger Productions is working on a new game in the series, Jagged Alliance: Rage!, set 20 years after the original.    Jagged Alliance: Rage! will take place on a remote tropical island, but instead of having access to a full-blown mercenary company, it's just you and a few buddies squaring off against a drug lord's personal army. The upside is that you're all seasoned badasses; on the downside, you're old, broken down, and suffering from the psychological toll of your chosen lifestyle. Legendary merc Ivan Dolvich struggles with alcoholism arising from the death of his nephew, for instance, while ex-Ranger Kyle Simmons is a master of stealth and leukemia survivor whose health has never fully recovered.  How this will be reflected in the game remains to be seen: The teaser at first seems to suggest that it will have some deeper meaning, but at the midway point flips into more of an Expendables-esque "we've still got it" attitude: "We don't know old," and all that. The updated Jagged Alliance website doesn't say much about it either, except that characters will have "strong personalities with own skills, desires, and personal conflicts." The game itself will feature turn-based tactical combat, as you'd expect from Jagged Alliance, "mixed with adventure elements," which is less clearly defined. Along with the debilitating effects of age and mileage, characters will also have access to unique "Rage" skills that will grow more powerful over time. Singleplayer and two-player online co-op action will be supported.  Jagged Alliance: Rage! will be the first game published by HandyGames, THQ Nordic's mobile and indie-focused label. A release date hasn't been set, but it's listed on Steam as "coming soon."  Thanks, Blues. Jagged Alliance returns again again with Rage (not that one)Aug 14, 2018 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunThe ranks of the Jagged Alliance series, with its myriad sequels, remakes, expansion packs, mods-gone-pro, cancelled MMOs and unofficial spin-offs, rival only the So Solid Crew in terms of headspinning numbers and impossible-to-remember names. After a frankly turgid couple of decades, it’s back once again for the one-time king of turn-based mercenary argy-bargy. Can Jagged Alliance: Rage score the Arnie-does-X-COM series a critical and/or commercial hit for the first time since 1999? Announced today, it’s due out later this year, and looks like this… (more…) Jagged Alliance: Rage! coming this fallAug 14, 2018 - Community AnnouncementsThe Unexpendables - Jagged Alliance: Rage! coming this fall Vienna, Austria, August 14th, 2018: We are all getting older. Nothing bad about that, right? Well, the knees might hurt sometimes, seeing things far away gets a bit harder, and – oh, boy! - the heart is not as strong as it used to be. But we wake up every morning, go to work, business as usual: killing some bad guys, igniting the odd rebellion, overthrowing another evil dictator… https://store.steampowered.com/app/463170/Jagged_Alliance_Rage/ That's what the mercenaries of Jagged Alliance have been doing these past 20 years. And now Ivan Dolvich, Helmut "Grunty" Grunther, Kyle "Shadow" Simmons and the other infamous fighters have a mission again when they're stranded behind enemy lines: survive! In Jagged Alliance: Rage! you are constantly on the brink of breakdown.
