Long time Halo dev Joseph Staten is leaving Microsoft after nine yearsApr 9, 2023 - VG247Head of creative on Halo Infinite and cinematic director on the original three Halo games Joseph Staten is leaving Microsoft. As reported by IGN, Staten is leaving Microsoft after nine years with the company, though the reasoning behind his departure hasn't been confirmed as of yet. "We’re grateful for Joseph’s contributions to the Halo franchise and Xbox as a whole," reads a statement from a Microsoft spokesperson. "We wish him all the best in his new adventure." Staten has been a notable name behind the Halo series for years, working on the first three Halo titles (Combat Evolved, Halo 2, and Halo 3) as a cinematic director, and also served as a lead writer on Destiny while working at Bungie. Staten commented on the report himself, writing, "Hey folks, I am indeed leaving Microsoft. I'll have more info to share soon, but for now, I'd just like to thank all my Xbox colleagues for all their understanding and support as I embark on a new adventure." Earlier this year, Staten left 343 Industries to return to Xbox Publishing, where he was prior to joining 343 Industries to lead development on Halo. This came shortly after Microsoft laid off around 10,000 employees, which did affect 343 Industries. Halo: The Master Chief Collection’s newest update has enabled matchmade multiplayer, and together with the custom game browser for the Steam Deck, you can now play some of the wackiest maps in any FPS from the comfort of your bed - or anywhere in the galaxy really. MCC’s multiplayer was previously disabled on Steam Deck since the mode required Easy Anti-Cheat, which has now been turned on. Yesterday, developers 343 industries released modding tools for Halo 2 and Halo 3 alongside the Master Chief Collection's season 8 update. Halo: Combat Evolved got its own official modding tools back in June, and the new tools for 2 and 3 offer similar programs for modders to mess with. I look forward to seeing what good stuff they make. Season 8 of MCC is called Mythic and showcases Halo "in a deliberately divergent way", 343 franchise and narrative writer at 343, Jeff Easterling, said in a post on Halo Waypoint. He's not kidding. Each of the new armour sets for use in Halo 3 multiplayer within MCC is focused on "reimagining the core Mjolnir armour as alternate universe amalgams based on legendary ancient warriors", including Greek and Norse mythology. We're playing as Spartans, after all! Chief among them is a new map for Halo 3 called Icebox, which is a remake of the classic Halo 2 map, Turf. Icebox was originally a multiplayer map from the cancelled Halo Online (343 has added Halo Online maps to Halo 3 before). Unlike the original, which is set in Mombasa, Icebox is set in the Russian city of Tyumen. Season six of Halo: The Master Chief Collection launched last night, and it brought with it Waterfall, a Halo Online map now playable in custom games for Halo 3. Waterfall is a snow and ice-themed map with a silenced SMG and Brute plasma rifle placed natively on the map. The trailer below shows it off: Halo Online was the free-to-play PC Halo game based on Halo 3 multiplayer and developed by Saber Interactive that Microsoft pulled offline before it got a full release. Taking a page out of the Fortnite playbook, Halo 3 is getting a raft of new customisation options, including what are called back accessories. These new customisation options, which do not affect gameplay, are live now in the Halo: The Master Chief Collection flight (the version of the game where upcoming features are tested). In a post on Bungie.net, the developer said halo.bungie.net goes offline permanently on 9th February. Almost nine years ago, stats and files from Bungie's Halo games stopped getting updated on Bungie.net. Since then, all stats, files and other data from Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach lived on at halo.bungie.net. If Red Dead Redemption 2 wants to show you a goose, it’ll damn well show you a goose. Last month, a new Twitter account popped up to remind us that this is a fairly recent development, cataloguing the smart, strange, and downright cursed wildlife created in the name of saving a few dozen polygons. (more…) What if Halo 3's multiplayer was flooded with rats, though?Sep 3, 2020 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun 343 are finally getting weird with Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and that’s great. But they were never going to hold a candle against the game’s modders, who’ve lately decided what Halo 3 really needs is to turn everyone into a rat. That’s exactly the premise behind Rat Slayer, an upcoming mod that – daft as it is – never dared to consider whether John Halo isn’t already just two-dozen rodents wearing a man-shaped suit of power armour. Now there’s a thought to keep you up at night. (more…) Halo is getting PC and Xbox matchmaking this yearAug 3, 2020 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun First up, I’m going to incept the Halo theme song into your brain: Oohwawawawahwahwawha… There, that should do it. Now we have the scene properly set, I’m excited to tell you that the Halo: The Master Chief Collection isn’t going to settle on just bringing the Halo series back to the PC. There are plans afoot that will let Xbox One and PC gamers fight together in multiplayer. Everything is connected, people. In a blog post on Halo Waypoint, the developer provided a snapshot of the features the development team is working on and committed to for 2020. Without providing specific dates, 343 confirmed a number of features players have been calling for. Perhaps the highlight is crossplay between Xbox One and PC. 343 said crossplay, input-based matchmaking and server region selection will all release together. Obsidian's Grounded is in fact the top-selling game on Steam's platform - at the time of this article's publication. Perhaps that isn't surprising given the game has seen over one million players in the first 48 hours of release. The second top-selling game on Steam is another Microsoft game - this one not yet out. Microsoft Flight Simulator, which Martin is currently into in a very big way, is currently flying high on Steam. This week, we’ve reverted to a more traditional gaming podcast format by spending the first five to ten minutes talking about 90s kids’ TV shows we watched. Did you miss us?? Remarkably, we do also talk about some video games, to whit: Halo 3 and Death Stranding, which are two big beasty release from this week that VidBud Matthew and Nate have been playing. Unfortunately I, Alice, haven’t been playing anything new, but am able to provide input – as well as sound effects! Yes, this week also sees the return of the much loved soundboard. Ooh la la! (more…) Halo 3 made me realise there's only really one Halo game, and it's all of themJul 14, 2020 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun The PC remaster of Halo 3 is another beautiful, robust polish job that shows just how well Bungie’s bombastic shooter series has aged. I recommend it heartily. Yes, it’s marred with some baffling narrative choices, bungled ally AI, and a few instances of phoned-in level design, of course. But then, in the immortal words of that astronaut meme, “always has been”. And at this point, the whole Halo experience is so firmly bound up in nostalgia, at least for me, that its flaws have long since become endearing quirks. But as much as this is a good moment to talk about Halo 3, what with it being out today and all, I’ve realised this post is just as much about the Master Chief Collection, the compilation/launcher… thing which now contains the whole of the classic Halo trilogy, plus Reach. I’d assumed the MCC was basically an electric version of a cardboard box with games in it. But now my four favourite Haloes are in it, the MCC seems to have reached a critical mass, and I’ve had something of a revelation. While the first two games came over from Xbox, the conclusion to Bungie’s first-person shooter trilogy stayed home. After 13 years, you’ll finally be able to see what became of Master Ian Chief. Did he, as he vowed at the end of Halo 2, finish this fight? You’ll have to play it to find out. (more…) Halo 3 finally arrives on PC next weekJul 7, 2020 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun As history would prove, Halo 3 didn’t quite finish the fight. For better or worse, they sure did keep making Halo games long after the reigns were handed over to now-caretakers 343 Industries. But us lot on PC will soon be able to close out Bungie’s original trilogy, as the stellar closing act finally joins Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Steam and the Windows Store next Tuesday, July 14th. We’ve checked off several PC Halo releases already this year and by lore order Halo 3 is next up to bat. As with the others, 343 Industries are inviting registered members of the Halo Insider Program to what they call “flights,” basically a big beta test. Instead of continuing to pick select groups of players, 343 say that they’re shooting off an invite to the current Halo 3 test to all registered Insider members. The test is scheduled to end on June 26th. The sole reason most folks picked up Crackdown. The Return Of The King in John Halo’s ring-smashing quest, in fellowship with a squid-mouthed Keith David and that cigar-chewing lad from Aliens.
