We can’t wait for you to experience Gripper for yourself, The Heart Core Team Touring Gripper and showcasing our Emotional BossesFeb 23, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsHello cyber-bike riders, Today’s update is about our recent travels to the Taipei Game Show, Steam Next Fest and a little insight into our emotional and impactful bosses. Burning Rubber on the Road The Heart Core team recently had the pleasure of traveling to the Taipei Game Show. This was our first physical convention of 2023, so we were really excited to see the player's reaction to our most up-to-date Gripper build. I’m so happy to say the reaction was more than we could have dreamed for. Not only did 100s of players stop by to test their mettle against the grueling bosses of Gripper, but we were also visited by the legendary Shuhei Yoshida. This was his second time playing the game, and he was full of praise for how Gripper has grown over the past five months. Our trip was capped off by the wonderful Xbox Team, who really made our journey special by showing us local places and introducing us to an industry people. We were also fortunate enough to attend the Xbox and Neon Doctrine party, which was incredible! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/417baba48725198d861767cc3fdfee8dd4f95271.jpg {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/a0505f218db00974b3e77040baad102e1b28617a.jpg {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/65c20264908367f0786c4f2568edb366aa4ebcdb.jpg {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/52e74d88a890cca92836abbfe5f0471c10ef4c95.jpg The New Demo A couple of weeks back, Gripper took part in the February Steam Next Fest. This was a big milestone for us as it was the final showcase of the Gripper demo before the launch. We’ve been working hard on getting the demo as close to the final product as possible. The festival saw (enter how many downloads the demo had) players take control of None. The feedback we received from the festival has been vital as we approach the full release of Gripper…not long now. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/a9799550b31ca67d7975569cc5e2048e106b9b57.gif The Emotional Bosses of Gripper As we mentioned in a previous developer blog, Gripper is a story built off emotion, pure raw emotion. Every boss in Gripper represents an emotion that we’ve all experienced in our life, from Anger to Depression. The mechanics and visual design of a boss represent the emotion it’s named after. For example, Anger, a titanous truck that’s hell-bent on killing you, drives at erratic speeds with an element of randomness to them. It was very important to really capture the true feeling of that emotion in every boss. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/5dc62697b2b5752d56c5a6f1480d3f47dcdc8887.jpg We don’t want to tease some of the later bosses. You’ll have to ride through those emotions with None and Kat-Kit when Gripper releases soon. To keep up to date with Gripper, be sure to follow us on Twitter, YouTube, Reddit, TikTok. If you missed this then you can catch up with it over at Game Tyrant or Nintendo Life. We’ll have more news about the release date soon, so keep a lookout for that. Now the burning rubber has settled on our announcement, we want to share more details about Gripper. More specifically, regarding the main protagonist None, and his trusty, if not slightly sarcastic sidekick Cat-Kit. Despite Gripper being a game where you can rip off a mechanical spider's legs, at its core, it’s a heartfelt story full of emotion and loss. None’s story is one of mystery. After running away from home following a disagreement with his father, he returns to find that the source of this disagreement may be the cause of what is now a barren waste and dystopian home, plagued with dangerous mechanical threats. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/e933190478af62b3fd2de3501b326044f4a3ea71.png Progressing through the challenging boss fights of Gripper will provide both answers and more questions as to what happened to None’s parents. Although Cat-Kit may put on a big front, they’re gentle at heart and hold the key information None needs to find the source of the new corruption. We really wanted to make None and Cat-Kit feel like a true partnership, like a boy and his life-long pet dog or cat. We build a sense of this through their seamless interactions together, both in and out of combat. Let’s just hope Cat-Kit isn’t the only remaining member of None’s family home. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/fbc2c315836e7ba0c2b569839d78bd24fb843b24.png If you’re excited to start gripping and ripping, please be sure to wishlist Gripper. Unfortunately, we cannot share a full release date yet, but it won’t be long until you’ll be burning some serious rubber on the tunnels of terror! Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing lots of information about what you can expect from Gripper. From the mech-melting upgrades you can unlock to the variety of Guardians you’ll be fighting…we’ll even introduce you to Cat-Kit, the smart-ass sidekick with all the answers and a heavy side of sarcasm. Today, we want to share with you the origins of Gripper and where the idea came from. Gripper was born from the brain (and heart) of our Co-Founder, Kirill Zolovkin. In a recent press release, Kirill said: “The idea was born when I lost my mother and as a game designer I wanted to express my feelings through gameplay”. He went on to express “Such sensitive emotional topics are usually covered in adventure games but I dreamt of a boss fight game where each boss is a stage of grief. Throughout the game you literally tear enemies apart to reveal their hearts, which sing with voices of those who you lost. Each one gives you an ability. Once you regain them all you are ready to rescue your family. Or to understand: you were rescuing yourself. It was never about gripping and ripping. But rather about letting it go.” At the very core of Gripper is a family-tied emotional story that represents Kirill and the Heart Core team’s vision. This story is shared with the player through beautifully hand-drawn comic-book-style art and visuals. The synthwave soundtrack is the very heart bead of the game, and it is designed to sync with the emotion and theme of each different boss fight. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/c101b99e20a0779c695fecf0ce0e895c131a98dc.jpg It’s going to be a very exciting year for both the Heart Core team and Gripper as a game. The first announcements came out and we received some really nice press: "Gripper Is The Akira-Inspired Boss Rush We've Always Wanted, And It Looks Incredible" Nintendo Life We cannot wait to share more information with you about the game, mechanics, and of course, the release date. If you’re excited to start gripping and ripping, then please be sure to wishlist Gripper. It really helps us out. The Heart Core Team Gripper was at Comic Con in LA!Dec 13, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsJoin Our Official Discord Server! We were very surprised by this trip because we went to the very core of entertainment culture. In our childhood, we watched beautiful cartoons from Disney, and we had an incredible opportunity to see the people who created these children’s miracles. We were honored to meet the actor/stuntman who played the role of Michelangelo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It was also very cool to talk to people who voice-acted for cult classics such as: Cowboy Bebop, Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, etc. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/36fc93c3dfd2929f6e55f63de92749b8cb691c5f.jpg When we showed our game to the players, the responsiveness and kindness of the audience, to put it mildly, surprised us. People at Games Con love video games, they understand game mechanics perfectly and describe in detail what’s happening on the screen and in-game hints for them is just another bother. The experience we had was very pleasing, it showed the depth of the gaming culture. The admiration cannot be expressed using words. The love for video games at Games Con is felt in the air. We were convinced of this when Kirill Zolovkin – the head of our team, was going about his business with a Gripper poster in his hands and then suddenly, he was stopped by two security employees. They began to ask Kirill various questions about the poster in his hands: what new game is it? When will it come out? Where did Kirill get that poster from? After they found out that the creator of this game was right in front of their eyes, they were shocked and even asked for Kirill's autograph. Moments like these are very inspiring, they get you pumping with energy that helps you make your truly dream-game. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/bbd6f80dd3a410639c56cc50ddd0d55f539f0cff.jpg Shoutout to the organizers of the MIX zone, these guys do an excellent job they sure know what they’re doing. The incredible atmosphere that they created at Games Con is unforgettable. Hundreds of interesting people from various communities and all in one place! It was great to get to know the people who made a fond that supports the LGBTQ+ community. The diversity of the gaming industry amazed us. We saw that both the city itself and the gaming culture are multinational, we were all united by one thing - the passion which video games give us. It’s very pleasing to acknowledge that people take video games seriously: there were many children who came to our booth and their parents asked us about any age restrictions. Fortunately, our game is suitable for any age, we try not to use rough language or any violent scenes. We’ve dropped more photos of Gripper at Comic Con LA in our official Discord server. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/52a375b14b97fd36ba5c0e9a9125d9f5087ff110.png We also gave an interview and are waiting for its release to share it with you!Gamescom Asia!Oct 28, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsGamescom Asia Last week we attended Gamescom Asia. Travelling around the globe from Europe we weren’t sure what to expect, but we were overwhelmed by our welcome and the support we had for the duration of our stay. Being able to meet players from another part of the world was really something special, as it showed just how strong the gaming community is globally! Introducing you to Gripper and seeing you play for the first time is always such a memorable experience at these events, as we love to see you enjoy the game, as well as gain feedback! We were also fortunate to meet big names in the industry, such as Shuhei Yoshida, former President of SIE Worldwide Studios. Getting mentioned on his Twitter was an unexpected surprise, and we were blown away with the amount of positive support that came from it. Watching people such as Daniel Robson, Chief Editor at IGN Japan, get stuck into the game really brings so much pride to the team as we’re ecstatic people are enjoying it this much. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/ba22789b2d74811db9006c861a20941bb426f8dc.jpg If you want to get a taste of Gripper, check out the limited time demo on our page now, as well as our latest trailer! https://store.steampowered.com/app/1336380/Gripper/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTI3Gv7BgHE&ab_channel=HeartCore Thank you all for being a part of this journey with us! Make sure you follow us and wishlist the game so you don’t miss an update!Devlog #3Oct 13, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsWelcome back to another update! This time we’ll be looking at progress the team made throughout September. Game Development Progress A lot has happened this month, and we’re getting to a stage where we don’t want to share too much in case it ruins the experience of playing the game once you’re able to get your hands on it! That being said, here’s what we can share… A lot of tweaks and adjustments are being made to different models, as we want them to look as clean as possible. We’ve scaled down the hook size slightly to make it look better positioned within the bike and have less clipping issues. With the hook being one of the main gameplay features, we have to be careful that hit boxes remain reliable and feel good to play. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/91d49a00191aebad24d189ee8800d782c24837fb.png The art team have run into challenges whilst creating certain models due to having a grand vision that they’re eager to implement. Working through these issues is a creative challenge but well worth it as we want to make sure it looks super epic for you all! Besides, would it really be game development without a few hitches along the way? Continuously updating models such as None, our main protagonist, is important to elevate the overall quality of the art within the game. We’re also creating new concept art to redesign some already implemented models, as we want everything to feel meshed together and as though it belongs in the same world. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/e6914de6d449e1c7dac2d55b97c0deff06af5a42.jpg Character models are being built upon to make sure they’re more in line with the concept art created, adding any details that may have been missed off in the beginning to keep things simple. This is important as we want our designs to be visually interesting and stand out when the game is being played. The same is happening with environmental objects already implemented in the build, to really make them feel as though they belong in this post-apocalyptic cyberpunk world. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/d1e6eab83d6f4d5697b81e4f23849fa7d4a5bc3c.png Making sure models are implemented with story beats in mind is something the team have been going over, as some aspects of models will change throughout the game. Ensuring all versions of a model are given the same care within the code and art teams is super important to the momentum of the game. Deciding how much time is put into certain models before the final polish is an ongoing conversation, as some parts of models aren’t visible from the gameplay camera or within cutscenes, so we want to make sure everything that *is* visible is to the highest standard. Late game arenas are being built into their final stages where gameplay, namely combat, can be focused on. Playing around with 2D and 3D elements to flesh out environments is also in the works, but this is in early stages so we’re unsure if it will make it into the final build of the game. Testing different lighting within environments is in progress, a...Devlog #2Sep 6, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsHey everyone! In this update: August was a busy month for us - we made some great progress in the game, and we went to Gamescom! Keep reading to find out more about what went on behind the scenes. Game Development Progress Lots of headway has been made within the team, with some exciting updates. Some I can share now, some you’ll have to wait and see! We’ve been busy making sure we have the bare bones of all the arenas and tunnels, so later on we can focus on polish and making them all shiny. This has included making sure all the decorative objects are added, as well as interactable ones. VFX, lighting and shading has also been added, with textures being played around with and voted on within the team’s Discord server. Making sure there’s collision has also been on the task list, as we don’t want players riding through objects that are meant to be a challenge to navigate. Within the tunnels we had placeholder objects that had yet to be sculpted, but progress has been made turning our flying rectangles into threatening daggers. Check out the before and after video on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Gripper_action/status/1565757698242740230?s=20&t=nEzk1LaSH-iyVXnEscjfZQ {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/a809dd529f2379727e4fa0732ddcfbdb9a081e30.png Physics has also been a topic of discussion, with ideas circulating around interactions between different elements (such as heat evaporating water). It’s too early to definitively say if this will make it into the final build, but we’re all about creating the best environments and atmosphere’s we can - only time will tell! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/669b896d88913f5ca7f1bebbf9fad952261d97e5.png Boss concept art has been created so the team has a reference for the final boss models. These models have also been created for the most part, and are being added into their arena’s. We’ve been starting to animate models to ensure they don’t look stiff and clunky, with the main protagonist seeing some improvements. In the words of one of our artists, “None became the proud owner of controlled knees and elbows”. Movement and combat design are all in the works, to try and make the fights feel as epic as possible. We’ve changed and updated textures for certain objects like the bike, making the wheels and windshield reflective rather than matte. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/fd65a9a4ce41ddbe885329655d8a9550888ee46e.jpg Updates to characters have also been done, with multiple characters starting to come to life. Narrative has started to be written, with character artwork being updated to show different expressions and personality during dialogue scenes, as well as during gameplay. Designing new and interesting characters is a challenge as there are so many great characters out in the gaming world, but the team have dug into the world and the story to try and achieve engaging persona’s. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/e05790439b8000841abb10a4224b1d6ab3cff5fa.jpg {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/c572f1ad90ff2b69080ec15290c373917e1c8ca9.png ...GRIPPER — watch a gameplay of demo at Gamescom!Aug 25, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsGripper is an Action RPG on a bike with top-down boss battles in a cyberpunk world. It’s been quite some time since we last updated you properly about the development process, so we wanted to share what we’ve been up to! What’s included in Devlog #1: General update of Gripper’s development Summary of what's been worked on the past few months A lot has happened since our last update post. In there we mentioned how we have updated the game’s graphics, as well as make the controls smoother and more enjoyable to play. Firstly I wanted to say thank you to everyone who played our first demo Gripper: Prologue (yes, first - something exciting is coming!👀). It gave insightful feedback which has changed the game for the better! Secondly, the aesthetic and overall look of the game has changed dramatically since the idea of Gripper was born 5 years ago, and to this day the team is still working on updating models to make sure the game looks as good as it can. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/c6f15eb4be5ed209e9fe9b7e8e69802cd89f2460.png Last month we shared on our socials an updated model of the bike that the art team have been working on - follow us over on Twitter if you want to see more behind the scenes content! https://twitter.com/Gripper_action {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/9e070190ec2088130fd930d8b9a16ccbd73e0602.png Gripper’s Development The whole team has been super busy over the last few months making as much progress as possible, here’s a quick peek into some of the work that’s been completed! There has been lots of advancement within the game’s design with the team looking at the combat. Discussions around overall difficulty and skill of the game have taken place, along with tweaking individual bosses. We’ve had in-house play testing happening to see what’s working and what isn’t, and have made adjustments in game based on this information. Controls, abilities and bosses have also been adjusted or added into the game, and are being completed in good time. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/ff66ec59c873f50a876ac3b13e512018bd91a2f6.png {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/ba81285236ab391d794d785489e0fd60b166e4a1.png The art department has made massive headway, working with both the game designers and marketing team to create different content. Concept art for later maps in the game, including battle arenas and tunnel maps that link areas, have been completed. They’ve been hard at work bringing these concepts to life with models, animations and in-game assets. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/89f81fa9fbc0eb96d617e8d8b10619a6488a22f9.png There have also been updates to maps and models, making sure the art direction is consistent and the models, such as our main protagonist and bike, look as good as possible. New menus are being created, such as where you’ll see your abilities, with UX and UI work happening on the main hud. We want to make sure everything on screen is readable and translates well to the player whilst they’re playing the game. With new promotional material being created for Gamescom, cutscene artwork has taken a backseat for now, but we ...Updated Gripper ArtworkJul 26, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsHello everyone! We’re excited to show you our new look! We’ve updated our logo and headers on all our socials. Let us know what you think! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/c3431e45734b5cffcf3d32b1bcdc0777c598f820.png We decided to give Gripper a fresh look before Gamescom to make sure we’re representing the game as clearly as possible. We’ve taken inspiration from comic book-style art for our new imagery so that all the promotional art for the game is inline with the art inside the game. We chose bold and contrasting colours that are dramatic and eye-catching, and also match our main character's colour scheme. We pride ourselves in having a unique art style within the game, and we wanted to make sure that’s one of the first things people see when looking at our game on store pages and social media. The art team took inspiration from Japanese calligraphy, as well as striking game art that stuck in our minds, such as Wolfenstein. After playing around with different facial expressions, font design and colours, the team settled on what you see now. We hope you love the new design as much as we do, and we’ll see you in the next update! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/638b77284525ab7c6e44de16243b330ef10e1c0d.pngNew Hazards And Challenges | Frozen Biome PreviewMay 31, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsNew biome {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/45b90898580961f46f8cd2af741f938246e99961.jpg As the story of Gripper unfolds, players will find themselves in new territories where they are to face completely new enemies and explore new landscapes. The frozen biome is one of them: dark, hostile and dangerous, it will bring a new atmosphere to Gripper, as well as new hazards to the player. A story-centered adventure {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/de71fffe42dda3ced79ec35abee202cc5f78d8ec.jpg We shall once again emphasize that we intend to make Gripper a deep and dramatic story. And the frozen biome is to deepen the sense that the story gives you by its art and atmosphere. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/38310576/736c677ed9a42fa781ae1bf233db8721c8156870.jpg Unlike the desert, this territory is dark and silent – as if it had been abandoned and long forgotten by every living creature. And, as you ride through the vast lands filled only with ice blocks and danger, you should feel something our characters felt at critical moments of their lives.
