Addressed issues: Bugs: Knocked-out enemies rarely fell into the surrounding geometry in such an unfortunate way, that they got invisible. Searching issue in "Petrol Quest" from mission 02 Units carrying a mobile-mounted gun would lose it under some rare conditions. Automatic healing now works differently. Before a unit had to survive an attack to apply a medkit afterwards. Now a medkit in personal inventory effectively extends the unit's health. The unit can take damage, that would be lethal otherwise. Silent eradication of stunned enemies is now really silent. Unwanted open fire after Knockout Infinitely looping Alarm Music Incorrect navigation and collisions in several missions Improvements: Improved gameplay of the first mission Extended Inventory tutorial Extended Weapons description "Sell all tradeable items" button Inventory slots description New obtained skill notification icon More noticeable visual information of the alert Units remember crouch/stealth command after leaving a cover. Your goal is to cross over the river which is heavily guarded by Union troops, save the scouts from enemy fire and enter the scientific centre. Along the way you will come across a village of miners where you can replenish your supplies as well an opportunity to help the locals. It is a good opportunity for players to decide whether the game is worth it for them. It should be noted that the beta version of GRAY ZONE does not include all of the game’s content. Players will only have access to a few missions, though all playable operators and mechanics are available. As we mentioned once, we stopped updating the image with what we’re planning on doing for each month. We found it too static and it didn’t engage our community as much as we would like so we made a decision. We came up with another way of how to inform our players about what’s going on in our game development kitchen. We’re sure many of you heard about Trello, which will be, from now on, a place for you, our players, to see what’s really going on. You will find new ideas that we have, small things we’re working on and others there. New items Working on new items is never a bad idea. That's why we’re working on new items which the player will be able to find while looting or by searching for them in missions. Last bigger challenge, which we’re testing, is the enemy’s reaction in different situations during the battle or crawling. We’re tuning the battle to be amusing but also challenging for the player. Lastly, we save the best thing for the end. As we mentioned earlier, we’re planning on testing the newest version with the help of a new Steam tool. It’ll be a new experience not for us, but also for our players. This testing will of course need feedback from the players which will be rewarded with a full version of our game for free. It’s been a month since we last updated you on what we’re working on. To sum it up, we devoted a lot of time to the behavior of the enemy while the alarm is going down. We’re successfully working on the 7th mission of the first chapter and there are many small changes that were implemented. There is a big testing and bug fixing period ahead of us for May. We also believe that there will be a new major update available on steam next month. To jump right in, this is what we’ve been working on! Catching the eye of your enemy by simple stone throw. If the player prefers sneaking, there is a slight chance that in some moments the enemy will need to be distracted in order to look the other way. That’s the most secure way for players to sneak unseen. But pay attention to this warning, we do not recommend throwing more stones one after another, this will cause the enemy to spot the player. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36429485/7eb68fe34f291c41c29186891260e5ab732e5c6e.gif Unsuccessful stone throw is now impossible. You guessed it right! In the current version, there was a slight bug. When the player threw the stone, it sometimes did not word properly but in the new one the problem doesn’t exist! Unit calculates the throw and each one becomes successful. We’re adding new tokens which give looting better sense. The old graphics of items were not so pleasing, at least for us. There is much work on GUI in our game in general but even in this case we made some improvements and we added some brand new commands and functions to Order but even in the Info Panel. First of all, we would like to say big thank you to our fans for their long-lasting support and endurance while waiting for a new update. We’re working on a major game update which is taking much longer than we were expecting. When we say major, we mean that we’re on our way to advance GrayZone’s gaming experience. What’s more, we are starting to write Developer Diaries, which will be an follow up on Roadmap or any other updates to summarize, what we’ve done and what you will see in next updates. Present mission content was based primarily on action but the update we’re about to give you will not only offer the action but also “stealthing” experience. This will bring a new gaming experience along with collecting rewards in “XP” form. For this, we needed to imply bigger changes on missions such as adding bushes for hiding, adding objects, stones and old trees with the advantages for the player in hiding. These are the changes we made in “stealth“ mode: Stealth zones throughout each mission Game itself assists and hints the player on how to pass the mission and therefore earn reward in XP, if he doesn’t trigger an alarm while getting the treasure or accomplishing other tasks. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36429485/a9f9232afd3349c15f62bcb7c221d6c74a5c0b69.jpg As we mentioned, the first major asset is collecting XP for each disarmed enemy. Getting more XP is possible if the player doesn’t trigger an alarm while accomplishing the task. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36429485/27155c4d9de789ae757aa759d34f190df4551f44.gif Ability to see where our enemy is looking To make attack from hiding even easier we included an “enemy’s sight radius” which is switched on automatically or by clicking on the particular enemy. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36429485/d30a3b14e1a098c44bca13e89af1bc3f3fe77057.gif Sound visualisation While sneaking around, it is very important to remain as silent as you can. If a player doesn’t care about crawling and runs around, this action has a harmful effect for visibility of his forces. If it runs, the sounds are louder which draws the attention of the enemy. What the player needs to do is to point on the object of interest. The game is steadier even on older computers. Reducing build size by 3GB made it possible to take up less space on disc. Small non-playable animals in the game. We dedicated whole December into the production - meaning we've been working on last two missions of the first Gray Zone chapter. We take all your valuable feedback to the heart and we are doing our best to implement accordingly. Our pace is slow, nonetheless, as our team currently consists of only 3 full-time members and one part-time externist. So it's quite difficult. On the flip side, we obtain resources for the development from outsourcing projects and contracts. As a matter of fact, we've already designed some core gameplay. Achievements Implementation After-mission statistics are part of a bigger plan and it directly connects to achievements. Some basic ones have already been added. Technology used We used the latest software available in computer graphics such as Autodesk 3ds Max, Substance Painter, Blender, Adobe Photoshop & Pixologic ZBrush. Models for most 3D objects were made in 3ds Max but some were made in Blender. ZBrush allowed us to create high-poly models and sculpt them with greater details using specialized masks. Textures were made in Substance Painter and Photoshop. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36429485/5eaf83f7704687105834e48f982985d5552a8445.jpg PBR textures Every 3d object in Gray Zone contains a texture which represents it's color and behavior in various light conditions. The texture is composed of multiple components or layers and they allow objects to define their reflection, diffusion, metallicity and so on. For this, we use a standard approach called PBR - Physically based rendering. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36429485/fa73ba8bf3f19b6a121dde2f8c86a1d1066b9462.jpg Lighting Number one most important factor when talking about computer graphics is definitely lighting. Quality of light and shadow plays a big role when trying to achieve realistic visuals. Lights & shadows can be processed in either real-time or pre-baked. In case of Gray Zone, calculating all lights and shadow casts in real-time is too exhaustive and unnecessary. This is why we've chosen the second approach - baked lighting. Baked lighting essentially means that all information about lights and shadows is calculated and saved beforehand, in the Unity engine. It has a huge impact in a form of a performance boost since lights & shadows of most objects don't need to be re-calculated in-game. There is one additional upside to the baked lighting - indirect lighting. Since we use PBR, some objects can reflect light in different angles and produce additional indirect lighting on other objects in proximity. This adds another level of realism into the scene. Specifically, Baked Global Illumination is the technical term. We've decided to create a completely new 'Tutorial/Intro' mission where you play as our antagonist - wait for it - The Union. What we are talking about is a 'bigger' mission where the most basic and advanced mechanics of the game will be explained in detail. Why tutorial mission? Entire available feedback and player experience that we have at our disposal has been considered. Clearly, most players are not aware of all the capabilities that the Gray Zone offers. There are situations, where the player knows about a certain feature but doesn't know how to properly utilize it, which is a problem. In another scenario the player is not aware of the feature at all which is even worse. The Gray Zone offers quite complex system and AI. The 'Tutorial' mission will allow us to properly introduce and explain everything necessary. This will also allow us to remove the tiny bits of tutorial from the story mode, which will increase the dynamics of the game flow. Of course, Covid situation and scarce resources impact the development process and the release date delay as well. We've been negotiating with investors for the last few months and it is on the right track. Vision system insight - Height map Our vision system utilizes the height map ( in a form of a 3D plane ) to determine, whether units see each other or not. Most objects generate height map, so try to keep this in mind when moving through a terrain. You can get from point A to point B unnoticed. Beware, though, as it works both ways.
