How am I supposed to move on now?Nov 15, 2019 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunThe year is 2049. My avatar, managing Tottenham Hotspur, is 67. Harry Redknapp is long dead. Chris Smalling is my assistant manager. Now, as I finally wind down my Football Manager 2012 playthrough through an unholy combination of bugs and, well, having won everything, the future beckons. I m having an existential crisis and the line between real and fictional is melting. But let s start at the beginning. (more…) Football Manager 2019 preview: a meaningful step forward for the seriesOct 9, 2018 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun When you re working on annual iterative titles, it is difficult, says Miles Jacobson, Studio Director at Sports Interactive. You re always going to get people turning around saying you haven t added anything. And no matter how much you add, you re still going to get people saying that. That s the challenge that the Football Manager series faces every year. It remains, as it always will be, a game about being a football manager. It will always be about selecting a team to manage, creating tactical systems, crafting squads of players and sending them out onto virtual pitches in the pursuit of glory. And it will always, to quote SI s Director of Development Marc Duffy, aim to achieve suspension of disbelief in the player s mind. The question then, as with all annual series, is the extent to which the game advances on its predecessors. In the case of Football Manager 2019, the studio is bullish about their ambitions for this year s release. (more…) Playing Football Manager doesn't make you a football managerSep 27, 2018 - EurogamerThere's something about Football Manager that makes it feel more than the sum of its parts. At its core it's just a database, a list of names that are assigned numbers which are then dragged and dropped into certain areas of a pitch by those who play it. Yet there's a reason players will don a real suit in preparation for playing in a virtual cup final, scout real-life footballers for a potential in-game transfer and why Sky Sports utilise the game's stats in its Premier League coverage Premier League. For many players, these numbers and names culminate in giving them a sense of unmatched gratification. A large part of Football Manager's appeal is in how it takes you that little bit closer to the environments of masterminds like Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho. The truth, though, is that despite its ability to be used as an all-encompassing football database with an unimaginable depth of information, it's not a true reflection on what it takes to be an actual coach. Most real coaches spend their Saturday afternoons standing on the sidelines in the pouring rain taking abuse from Dave the double glazier. Football Manager can't hope of coming close to the real thing, in more ways than one. Which were the games that most people were buying and, more importantly, playing? As is now something of a tradition, Valve have let slip a big ol’ breakdown of the most successful titles released on Steam over the past twelve months. Below is the full, hundred-strong roster, complete with links to our coverage if you want to find out more about any of the games, or simply to marvel at how much seemed to happen in the space of 52 short weeks. For non-ballheads, lets sidebar for an analogy. Football Manager is a crafting game about preparing and tweaking a wildly complex stew. The stew is a football team. Thousands of ingredients (players) are available, each with oodles of flavours (attributes) affecting what they contribute to the stew. Football Manager’s crafting recipe grimoire is cumbersome, though, and even hides some ingredient attributes. Enter Genie Scout, a fan-made ingredient guide (tool) which is friendlier and more detailed – invaluable when creating a truly great football stew. (more…) Football Manager 2018 adds new graphics engine with help from Total Warhammer devsOct 23, 2017 - PC GamerAhead of its November 10 launch, Football Manager 2018 has so far teased its Dynamics system, its overhauled scouting system, and its new Medical Centre, among a number of other features. Naturally, these deal with the behind-the-scenes side of Sports Interactive's esteemed footie/soccer management sim, however the latest instalment will also double down on its 'Matchday Experience.'  As portrayed in the following trailer, FM 2018 introduces a new graphics engine, as well as a number of UI and HUD tweaks, that enhance how matches play out and how you interact with your team. New motion capture animations lend a new degree of realism to games, with goalkeeper movements a particular focus of the developer.  Over to Sports Interactive:  As detailed there, the new engine now supports DirectX 11, against previous games' DirectX 9. On-pitch lighting and textures have been "significantly enhanced", and there's now more movement variation from one player to the next. These improvements "make it easier for the match view team at SI to make changes in the future," we're told, and stadiums now play a bigger role in outlining scale and depth.  "It's not just the background tech that's improved, the graphics have too," says Football Daily's Joe Tomlinson above. "Our art team have worked closely with our sister studio at Creative Assembly this year to improve the player models and stadiums… this affects how a player moves around the pitch and operates on the ball, which leads to a more authentic portrayal of the players during a match as a result." Football Manager 2018 is due November 10 (that's two weeks this Friday). Until then, here's the devs on what's changed on the transfer market and board interaction front: Look out for our early impressions of FM 2018 this week, as well as an interview with Sports Interactive's Miles Jacobson.  Football Manager 2018 s dynamics and cliques explainedOct 9, 2017 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunFootball Manager 2018 will change scouts, stadiums, AI and moreSep 29, 2017 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunHarry Redknapp is not a wheeler-dealer. The subs bench is not a bed. Transfer deadline day is not suitable for work. Transfer deadline day is your entire existence now. I’ve been waiting to see what’s new in Football Manager 2018 since the release of Football Manager 2017. A short transfer window spoof video from Sega and Sports Interactive doesn’t reveal an enormous amount, but overhauled scouting, fancy-looking stadiums and a mysterious ‘dynamics’ system are all teased, along with AI improvements on and off the pitch. (more…) The Joy Of Football Manager s sparse crowdsJul 25, 2017 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunWe’re poised in the drop zone, hanging on by a thread, and nobody seems to care if we cling on by the skin of our teeth or tumble into oblivion. I am the manager of Bury FC and the terrible results aren’t the worst thing about this season. The truly heartbreaking thing is the apparent demise of a small club and its generations-old local support base. If a last minute goal condemns a team to relegation and nobody is around to see the ball hit the net, does it even matter? In Football Manager , they only sing when you’re winning. This is just to update the in-game Twitter to work with the latest version. Given the minimal changes the update should be relatively quick to download. As always if you encounter any problems we suggest restarting Steam to enable it to complete. We’ve also sent Adam behind enemy lines to Los Angeles, but have only been able to recover a handful of his communiques. This week’s special extra-long episode also features some chat about Alice’s murderous efficiency in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Pip’s floundering in Football Manager 2017 and my doomed piloting in Everspace. We also discuss the origin of the name “E3” and discover a patchwork quilt of possible etymologies. … Football Manager 2017 pass-and-save diary, part three: Half-empty cupsJun 14, 2017 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunI’ve always said a manager should be judged on the trophies in the cabinet rather than their position in the league table. Give me the choice between finishing 17th in the Premier League but winning the League Cup and finishing 2nd but having no trophies to show for it, and I’ll go for the cup every time. When I say I’ve always said that, I mean I’ve been saying it to the Leicester board repeatedly for the last couple of weeks. Our Football Manager 2017 League campaign is a dud; not a disaster but a damp squib. But we’re still in the Champions League and I calmly guided us to the semi-final of the FA Cup. Now it’s all on Pip. We’re going to do the double (and finish 15th in the League). …
