One location, one week, one screen - you get a terrific sense of where you are and why, and it makes the whole game really sing. Mix that with the '80s retro-tech flair of Stranger Things - floppy-discs, CRT monitors, pixelscript - and some bloody, first-person combat a la Resident Evil Village, and the result is Suffer The Night, a new Steam horror game with a smart, metatextual (a-thank you) twist. Cawthon confirmed his decision in a statement shared to ScottGames.com, accompanied by Five Nights at Freddy's artwork drawn by an unnamed eight-year-old fan. There's no mention of the controversy in his statement, save for a reference to him receiving support from the LGBTQ community - a nod to the recent criticism faced by him for supporting Republican candidates with broadly anti-LGBTQ stances. In a lengthy post shared on the FNAF Reddit page, Cawthon updated fans with the latest details from the movie project, ominously entitling the update "Bad news about the FNAF movie :(". "Before we get to the bad news concerning the state of the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, I wanted to share a brief history of the FNAF screenplay," Cawthon wrote (thanks, PCGN). "It's been a long road, so let's take a look at some of the screenplays that have come and gone over the years, in no particular order." The film will shoot early next year, using a screenplay the horror game's creator says has "all the right" characters, motivations, and stakes. In a post on Reddit, Scott Cawthon, the developer of the mainline Five Nights At Freddy's games and overseer of the Freddy's franchise, gave an update on the movie's progress. Titled "Bad news about the FNAF movie", he ran through all the iterations of the script, before landing on a plot twist that the bad news is really good news, because a shooting draft is finished, and cameras roll spring 2021. The list of iterations for the adaptation of the survival game contains some very Hollywood choices. Some, like 'Plushies Take Manhattan', where the Freddy's animals took Manhattan, and one where it transpired the robots were being made for the government, were binned because they had little to do with the games. A few others played with elements from the extended lore and novels, and a couple, such as 'Misfit Kid', where a weird kid moves to town, finds Freddy's, and gets trapped, got close to being kept, but just didn't have what Scott and the producers were looking for. The winning write-up is dubbed 'Mike', and Cawthon says "It's fun, it's scary, and it has a great central story." Read the rest of the story... A number of creations by rookie developers are being supported through the cause, which will hopefully get them a wider release, too. In a Reddit post (cheers, Eurogamer), Scott Cawthon, the main developer behind the survival games explained the impetus behind the Fazbear Fanverse Initiative, and outlined what it's offering to collaborators. "It's a giant collaboration involving several fangame creators who have made some of the most popular fangames over the years here in the community," Cawthon explained. "It's a project that's designed to invest into those franchises, give back to the developers, and hopefully bring new entries to those franchises as well!" As of now, the initial lineup includes Five Nights at Candy's 4, The Joy of Creation: Ignited Collection, a re-imagining of the original Five Nights at Freddy's, and two others. Cawthon himself states that he's not involved in the creative side whatsoever, only funding, and providing extra publishing support. The release plan for each is to come out on GameJolt as a free download, and then become available as part of some bundle deals that include other fangames, minigames, and the original Five Nights at Freddy's games on consoles and mobile. First things first (as outlined in a very busy blog update over on Steam), Cawthon confirmed that the Five Nights at Freddy's console ports, as unveiled in August, are still in the works. Cawthon originally announced console versions of the series back in 2016, only to later cancel them "due to concerns about the deal", so their continued existence this time is encouraging. These newly announced HD ports of the original Five Nights at Freddy's games are being handled by developer Clickteam and are currently, according to Cawthon, about 20% complete. The finished versions will be heading to Switch, Xbox One, and PS4, and will also be getting an airing, in their improved high-definition guise, on iOS and Android. A Five Nights at Freddy's movie was first touted back in 2015, when Warner Bros. revealed that it had acquired the rights to produce a film adaptation of the mindbogglingly popular horror game property. At the time, producer Seth Grahame-Smith said that the studio was looking to make "an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie" in conjunction with original game creator Scott Cawthon. However, in January last year, Cawthon posted to Steam announcing that due to "several delays and roadblocks, some involving problems within the movie industry as a whole", the Five Nights at Freddy's movie was "back at square one." As far as Cawthon was concerned though, this was a positive: "it's good because I want to make sure that the right movie gets made, and things are on track right now for that to happen." On the surface, it's a retro-themed tycoon game where you run your own pizza restaurant. But, as players have discovered, it's actually something more sinister.
