Final Fantasy VI

At long last, the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series on PC gets classic font and music optionsJan 31, 2024 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunWhen Square Enix announced the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection for Final Fantasies 1 through 6 back in 2021, I was overjoyed. For too long had PC folks had to 'make do' with the quite nasty mobile ports of these games, and the Pixel Remasters looked set to finally rectify that with proper versions replete with their original artwork. But one thing was missing. Well, several things were missing it turns out, but chief among them were, of course, its damn fonts - a point of contention that's plagued many a Square Enix PC port in recent years, and one that fans quickly set about trying to fix with mods. Extra salt was then added to the wound when Square Enix said that last year's Switch and PS4 versions of the Pixel Remaster series would have two different font options straight out of the box - and it's only now that the PC versions have finally caught up. Read more Would you wait over 20 years for a Final Fantasy 6 remake? Because that's how long it might takeJan 29, 2024 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunFinal Fantasy 6 is one of the most beloved Final Fantasy games in the series, so much so that even staff at Square Enix keep hassling series producer Yoshinori Kitase about when they're going to remake it and give it the full Final Fantasy 7 treatment. Alas, the prospect of such a project has had fresh water poured over it this weekend, with Kitase explaining that, given it's already taken them ten years to make Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (with a third entry to complete the trilogy yet to come), a Final Fantasy 6 remake would likely take twice as long as that to actually make. And you know what? I'm good, actually. The Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster is good enough for me in this lifetime. Read more You’ll probably have to wait decades for a Final Fantasy 6 remake, but do we really need one?Jan 29, 2024 - VG247Plenty of Final Fantasy 6 fans are clamouring for a remake, but Final Fantasy 7 Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase says if it does happen, it'll take a very long time. Over the weekend, French YouTuber Julien Chièze shared a video of an interview between him and Kitase, where the developer was asked to expand upon earlier comments he's made about a hypothetical Final Fantasy 6 remake - including the fact that many staff at Square Enix want one too. As translated by Shinra Archaeology Deparment on Twitter, Kitase noted that the Final Fantasy 7 remake project leading up to Rebirth has taken about 10 years itself. If Square Enix was to remake Final Fantasy 6, he estimates it might take double that amount of time, even suspecting that it would be bigger than the Final Fantasy 7 remakes, given how many characters there are. Given that there's still one more Final Fantasy 7 remake part to come out following Rebirth's release next month, a Final Fantasy 6 remake would easily take at least two decades by Kitase's count, which is quite the length of time to spend on remaking just one game. Kitase again also noted how there are a lot of people internally that want to remake the game, but he isn't able to confirm they will at this point in time, even if that isn't what he wants himself. Although the game has been re-released as part of the Pixel Remaster bundle, fans within the company have been asking for a full blown remake. You would think that some simple remasters of the first six Final Fantasy games would be a shoo-in for at the very least a Nintendo Switch release. That would be a good business decision from Square Enix, but this is also the company that is insisting on pushing forward with blockchain nonsense, so who's to say what the right call is. Fortunately for us though, it seems to have acquired some sense after all, as it looks like PS4 and Switch versions of the remasters are on the way. As spotted by deals wizard and news aggregator Wario64, all six of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters have been rated for PS4 and Switch by the ESRB. Obviously this hasn't been officially revealed by Square Enix just yet, but ratings board leaking game announcements ahead of time is pretty common. Many things remain as they were in the original game, including the fact you can suplex a train (which wasn't a sure thing, as a tweet from two weeks before launch showed a version in which the Phantom Train didn't flip over). One thing that has changed is the famous opera scene, which received a visual overhaul, with the 2D characters in front of 3D backgrounds à la Octopath Traveler, and vocals in seven languages... Yeah, they were officially available on PC, but we got them all blurry from shoddily remastered mobile versions. Recognising that people wanted pixels not smears, Square Enix last year started releasing 'Pixel Remasters' of the early series. That's now complete with today's launch of Final Fantasy VI's Pixel Remaster version. That's the one with the clown. Read more Final Fantasy 6 remaster has a new 3D opera scene with actual singingFeb 21, 2022 - PCGamesNThe new Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster is nearly here, and it promises to upgrade one of the best JRPGs on PC with "completely new graphics and audio". This is none more apparent in the game's famous opera scene, which has been completely remade with new 3D graphics - and even proper vocal singing. It's considered one of the best RPGs ever made and the new Pixel Remaster of Final Fantasy VI is out this Wednesday, February 23 - but it's not been without controversy. One of the game's most famous moments, the ridiculous train suplex, has been completely flubbed - and Square Enix is already promising to fix it. However, another of Final Fantasy VI's most famous scenes is the Opera House, and this appears to be receiving far more attention to detail. As revealed by a recent report from Famitsu (via @Nibellion), the opera house itself has been completely remade in 3D in a style similar to Lost Sphear or I Am Setsuna - and that's not all. I'm not sure that any other game series would think to allow a character to wreck a locomotive like that, which is why it's a highlight of Final Fantasy 6. But when updating fans on how the game's pixel remaster is coming along, Square Enix made a fatal mistake. The train wasn't being flipped upside... Yes, you can still suplex the train in the new version. However, the clip that the devs showed had one major issue - the train didn't flip upside down while receiving the suplex. That's the kind of problem that makes a game unplayable, but thankfully, the issue will be fixed before release. "We're still hard at work polishing Final Fantasy VI pixel remaster in time for launch next week," the devs say in a follow-up, "and we saw some of your comments that the Phantom Train didn't flip during Meteor Strike. The video was taken from a pre-release version, and will be adjusted in time for launch!" Crisis averted. The FF6 remaster release date is set for February 23 across Steam, iOS, and Android. Earlier this week it was revealed that the Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster would be out on February 23 - first by accident, and then properly confirmed by Square Enix. It's been delayed several times but now finally looks to be coming out at last, and the first screenshots seemed to be promising. The Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters offers "completely new graphics" in a remastered retro pixel style, and so fans were hoping for a bit of a step-up over the previous remasters. Square Enix took to Twitter today to show off Final Fantasy VI's famous meme of the ghost train boss receiving a suplex by Sabin - however, this wasn't quite the win the publisher was hoping for, as fans quickly spotted that all wasn't right with the famous wrestling move. Well, here it comes. Final Fantasy VI is getting the pixel remaster treatment on February 23rd. Read more Final Fantasy 6 remaster release date leaked, then confirmedFeb 9, 2022 - PCGamesNSquare Enix previously announced that the Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster would launch this February, and a more precise date leaked on the iOS App Store today - about one hour before the devs officially confirmed the date via a press release. Sadly for you Switch holdouts, it's still only confirmed for Steam and mobile. (Though it will be arriving in time for the Steam Deck release date.) Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster launches for Steam, iOS, and Android on February 23. Similar to previous entries in the Pixel Remaster line, it'll feature updated graphics with widescreen support, a rearranged soundtrack overseen by Nobuo Uematsu, quality-of-life gameplay tweaks, and supplementary material like a bestiary, gallery, and music player. Some early screenshots suggested that we'd see more substantial graphical updates in this remaster compared with the previous efforts, but it looks like that's limited to some key scenes. The store page shows a gentle 3D effect applied to the beloved opera scene, for example. Read the rest of the story... The devs are eager to share a bit of what you can expect, though, and have revealed the first official screenshot of Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster. Technically you might've seen this image before, but either way it's looking like there's going to be a much bigger visual overhaul for this entry in the series. The image comes from Final Fantasy VI's opening, where a group of magitek mechs trudge through the snow toward a mountain village. The shot is framed completely differently than it is in the original - the mechs are placed differently in the scene, the vista in the background appears entirely redrawn, and there looks to be a subtle fog effect that's definitely new. This same screenshot was included in a recent issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, alongside an image of the FFVI's iconic opera scene. The stage there appears to have gotten an even heavier facelift, with fully 3D background effects that give the game a vibe similar to Square Enix's own Octopath Traveler. Square Enix says it's giving itself the "necessary time to apply final polish" while completing development on the game, so sit tight. We recently got a wee glimpse of what the dev team is working on in an issue of Famitsu. The opera scene, in particular, has a 2.5D pixel vibe that's reminiscent of Octopath Traveller, though I'm keen to see how the rest of the game will look in comparison. Read the rest of the story...
